Qatar got its World Cup 2010 qualifying
campaign up and running with a 2-0 victory
over the Asian Cup champions Iraq.
Watched by a capacity crowd of 18,000 at
Al Arabi Sports Club’s Grand Hamad Stadium,
Qatar’s Uruguayan coach, Jorge Fossati, was
rewarded for his bold decision to name an
attacking 4-3-3 formation with Sebastian Soria,
Marcio Emerson and Hussain Yasser up front
In a dream start, Qatar raced to 1-0 lead in
the first minute when the unmarked midfielder
Montesin grabbed a loose ball on the right
flank and quickly chipped in a neat swerving
pass to Soria, who managed the gentlest of
touches on the ball which went into the far side
of Iraq goalpost.
Qatar doubled their lead through Fabio in
the 67th minute. Marcio Emerson’s free-kick
from the edge of the box was blocked by an
Iraqi, but the ball rolled nicely to unmarked
Fabio, who swiveled and smartly flicked the
ball through the hands of goalkeeper Noor
Hassan.
After the final whistle, Qatar fans celebrated
a famous win that puts the World Cup
qualifying campaign right back on track with a
prosession of cars along Doha’s Corniche
It was Qatar’s first win since their 3-0 loss
to Australia in February. Qatar’s next qualifier
is against China away on June 2. Australia
currently top the group with four points.
Qatar are second with three points, China
have two and Iraq one.

clinched third place at the
36th edition of World Cross
Country Championships in Edinburgh,
Scotland. They bagged 144 points
behind the Kenyans who finished first
with 39 points and the Ethiopians who
secured second place with 105 points.
Two of the six Qatari runners made
the top ten. Filex Kibore secured the
sixth place in 34.15 minutes, while his
compatriot Ahamd Hassan Abdullah
clinched the eighth place in 35.18
minutes. Qatar’s team leader Mubarak
Hassan Shami finished in 25th place.

قطر تطلق تصفيات كأس العالم
أنعشت قطر آمالها بالتأهل لتصفيات كأس العالم 2010 بعد فوزها على العراق بطل آسيا السابق
2-0. وقد حضر المباراة، التي أقيمت في أستاد الحمد في النادي العربي الرياضي، جمع غفير (18,000 متفرجا). وقد تمت مباركة جهود مدرب الفريق القطري الأوروغيوواني خورخيه فوساتي لقراره الجريء بوضع تشكيلة هجومية 4-3-3 يقودها سيباستيان (سوريا) ومارسيو إميرسين وحسين ياسر. كانت البداية الرائعة عندما أمنت قطر الهدف الأول في الدقيقة الأولى، حيث تلقى لاعب الوسط مونتيسين كرة ضالة من الجانب الأيمن وقام بتمريرها بشكل التفافي إلى سوريا الذي بدوره أمسكها بخفة ليسكنها داخل شباك المرمى العراقي.
وقد ضاعف فابيو من رصيد قطر في الدقيقة 67، فبعد أن صد لاعب عراقي تسديدة الركلة الحرة التي نفذها اميرسين من جانب الملعب، تدحرجت الكرة بخفة نحو فابيو الذي انسل فجأة ثم استدار ليمرر الكرة ببراعة من بين يدي حارس المرمى نور حسين فيودعها شباكه.
وما إن أطلق الحكم صافرة النهاية حتى بدأت سيارات المشجعين بالتوافد على كورنيش الدوحة احتفالا بالنصرالذي أعاد قطر إلى مسار تصفيات كأس العالم.
كان هذا هو النصر الأول لقطر بعد خسارتها أمام أستراليا 3-0 في فبراير/شباط، وستواجه قطر الصين في مباراة تأهيل أخرى في الثاني من يونيو/حزيران. وتتصدر أستراليا حالياً القائمة بأربع نقاط ويليها قطر بثلاث نقاط ثم الصين بنقطتين ثم العراق بنقطة واحدة.
