Source text - English The small intestine (small bowel) extends for 20 feet from the pyloric sphincter to the first part of the large intestine. It has three parts. The duodenum, only 1 foot in length, receives food from the stomach as well as bile from the liver and gallbladder and pancreatic juice from the pancreas. Enzymes and bile help to digest food before it passes into the second part of the small intestine, the jejunum, about 8 feet long. The jejunum connects with the third section, the ileum, about 11 feet long. The ileum attaches to the first part of the large intestine. Millions of tiny, microscopic projections called ‘villi’ line the walls of the small intestine. The tiny capillaries (microscopic blood vessels) in the villi absorb the digested nutrients into the bloodstream and lymph vessels. Figure 5-8 shows several different views of villi in the lining of the small intestine.

Source text - English DUODENAL ULCER
Duodenal ulcers occur more commonly than gastric ulcers. The most frequent site for a duodenal ulcer is in the proximal duodenum. Postbulbar ulcers are rare.
Radiological features
Endoscopy is the investigation of choice, though a barium meal examination is still frequently performed. Diagnosis of a duodenal ulcer depends on the demonstration of a crater or niche, into which the barium pools. The ulcer crater can occur on either the anterior or posterior wall of the duodenum and occasionally ulceration may develop in the postbulbar area. Chronic ulceration leads to fibrosis, scarring, narrowing and deformity of the duodenum. Duodenitis and mucosal ulcerations may prove difficult to demonstrate on a barium study.
Complications
Perforation. An ulcer may erode through the wall with perforation and escape of intraluminal contents into the abdominal cavity.
Haemorrhage. Erosion of the ulcer into a vessel may lead to significant haemorrhage, with either haematemesis or melaena. Endoscopy is helpful to pinpoint the source. Angiography may be used, if endoscopy is not satisfactory, to localize the source in active bleeding.

Humour tickles drug centre that gives hedonistic high
There's truth in the maxim 'laughter is a drug'. A comic cartoon fired up the same brain centre as a shot of cocaine, researchers are reporting.
A team at Stanford University in California asked lab mates, spouses and friends to select the wittiest newspaper cartoons from a portfolio. They showed the winning array to 16 volunteers while peering inside their heads by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
The cartoons activated the same reward circuits in the brain that are tickled by cocaine, money or a pretty face, the neuroscientists found. One brain region in particular, the nucleus accumbens, lit up seconds after a rib-tickler but remained listless after a lacklustre cartoon.
