Biographie - Grzegorz Rosinski
Né en Pologne en 1941, Grzegorz Rosinski découvre très tôt la bande dessinée occidentale à travers un exemplaire du journal Vaillant. A 16 ans, il publie ses premiers dessins. A cette époque, il fréquente le lycée des Beaux-Arts puis l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de Varsovie dont il sort, en 1967, avec un diplôme d'arts graphiques en poche. Pendant dix ans, pour un éditeur polonais, il signe les aventures d'un détective et d'un pilote d'hélicoptère, puis devient vite la vedette du premier magazine polonais de BD Relax dont il assure aussi la direction artistique. Dans le souci de se perfectionner, Rosinski débarque en 1976 en Belgique. Il place quelques histoires dans Le Trombone illustré, dans les journaux Tintin et Spirou. La croisière fantastique avec Mythic sera éditée en albums au Lombard. En 1977, avec Jean Van Hamme, Rosinski entame dans le journal Tintin la saga de Thorgal qui connaît un succès foudroyant au Lombard. En 1986, les deux auteurs créent un superbe récit complet, Le grand pouvoir du Chninkel pour (A Suivre). Avec Duchâteau, il se lance, en 1980, dans la science-fiction en créant le personnage de Hans, toujours pour Le Lombard. En 1992, il dessine, sur scénario de Jean Dufaux, La complainte des landes perdues (Dargaud). Rosinski est un éternel perfectionniste qui fait lui-même l'encrage et le lettrage de ses albums. Son œuvre a été primée de nombreuses fois. En mai 2001, il réalise un superbe Western, sur un scénario de Van Hamme, en couleurs directes pour la collection « Signé ». En janvier 2003, la collection « Le Lombard En Marge » accueille le scénario original de ce Western rédigé par Van Hamme, illustré et annoté par Rosinski : un moyen de s'immiscer dans l'intimité des auteurs et dans les coulisses de la BD. Actuellement, il vit en Suisse où il continue à dessiner la série Thorgal et à superviser le développement des séries parallèles des Mondes de Thorgal.

Grzegorz, comment l’illustrateur polonais que vous étiez en 1976 en est-il arrivé à travailler avec Jean Van Hamme pour un journal de l’Ouest ?
La rencontre s’est faite par hasard, par l’intermédiaire d’amis d’amis. Une coïncidence heureuse ! J’étais déjà connu en Pologne, mais je cherchais quelque chose de différent. Je voulais faire mon petit cinéma avec mon papier et mes crayons. J’avais déjà dessiné des pages pour «Le Trombone Illustré», le supplément de «Spirou», mais Jean a été le premier à me faire vraiment confiance. C’est comme ça que je suis devenu le premier dessinateur issu des pays de l’Est à collaborer avec l’Occident !
Et pourquoi «Thorgal» ? Par goût de la mythologie ?
Non, c’était la condition de notre collaboration ! Je vivais à Varsovie dans les difficiles conditions politiques de l’époque. J’avais peur de la censure concernant mes courriers marqués «Pour publication en Occident». On ne pouvait pas parler de sexe, ni de politique. Et il valait mieux éviter les références historiques ou aux civilisations actuelles. Après avoir exclu toutes ces possibilités, il nous restait l’Humanité. Nous avons entrepris la première bande dessinée universelle, à destination de tous les lecteurs !
Dans un tel contexte, comment en êtes-vous arrivé à la BD ?
Comment avez-vous appris son langage ?
J’étais influencé par la BD en général. Mais, contrairement à beaucoup de mes collègues, je n’ai effectivement pas grandi avec la bande dessinée. Je n’avais que quelques exemplaires du magazine «Vaillant» diffusé par le parti communiste français et quelques strips tirés de journaux communistes hollandais. Pour qui concerne le «langage», la narration visuelle, c’est comme la littérature, la poésie ou le cinéma pour d’autres, c’est une disposition psychique particulière. Il ne suffit pas de savoir dessiner ou raconter. Il faut plusieurs qualités. D’ailleurs, aujourd’hui, je ne me désigne même plus comme un dessinateur : je «présente visuellement», si vous voulez. Je raconte une histoire en images. Parce que ce n’est plus une «bande» et elle n’est plus «dessinée». Je trouve beaucoup plus juste l’appellation américaine : «roman graphique». Avant, on faisait de la bande dessinée. Aujourd’hui, l’évolution du média a changé la donne !
Pourquoi, depuis le début, avez-vous ce besoin d’évoluer sans cesse, de toujours vous remettre en danger ?
C’est assez simple : pour ne pas m’endormir ! Dans nos métiers créatifs, il faut de l’adrénaline tout le temps. Sinon, on a toujours l’impression d’avoir déjà fait les choses et je ne veux pas refaire les choses que j’ai déjà faites. Chacun a sa façon de travailler, mais moi je fais tout pour éviter de trouver un «style». Quand on en trouve un et que le public l’accepte, on ne progresse plus et c’est dramatique ! Le temps avance et notre perception des choses est déterminée par le monde qui nous entoure. Et il change ! Il faut s’en rendre compte et essayer de ne jamais vieillir.
Comment collaborez-vous avec Yves Sente ?
J’ai l’habitude de ne travailler qu’avec des amis. Yves Sente et moi nous connaissons depuis des années, et nous avons même une belle expérience professionnelle ensemble. Je préfère travailler avec des scénaristes qui ne sont pas dessinateurs parce que ça tue mon imagination. A l’inverse, je n’ai jamais été tenté par l’écriture. Je ne travaille qu’en symbiose. La règle est simple : à partir du moment où j’ai accepté le scénario, je n’ai rien à dire et réciproquement. Une simple description des objets et des personnages me suffit. Après, le cadrage et la mise en scène, c’est mon travail ! Et, parce que j’accepte ce jeu, je ne donne jamais d’idées car je ne veux pas voler à mon scénariste le plaisir d’être écrivain ! Et puis, comme je dis toujours, j’ai la chance de ne travailler qu’avec les meilleurs !

Biography- Grzegorz Rosinski
Grzegorz Rosinski was born in Poland in 1941 and discovered western comic books early on in an issue of the French comics magazine Vaillant. At sixteen his first drawings were published, and he went to the Lycée des Beaux-Arts and then the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Warsaw, where he graduated in 1967 with a degree in graphic arts. For ten years he wrote the adventures of a detective and a helicopter pilot for a Polish publisher, then quickly became the leading contributor for the first Polish comics magazine, Relax, for which he later became the artistic director. Rosinski moved to Belgium in 1976 to perfect his skills. He published stories in Le Trombone illustré, Tintin magazines and Spirou (La croisière fantastique) written by Mythic, which were later published in albums by Le Lombard. In 1977, Rosinski and Jean Vann Hamme started the Thorgal saga in Tintin magazine which enjoyed lightning success with Le Lombard. In 1986, the two authors created an amazing one-shot, Le grand pourvoir du Dhninkel for (A Suivre). In 1980 with Duchâteau, he dove into science-fiction and created the character Hans, also for Le Lombard. In 1992, he illustrated Jean Dufaux’s script La complainte des landes perdues (Dargaud). Rosinsiki, a perfectionist by nature, completed the inking and lettering himself for his albums, and his work received many awards. In May 2001, he produced the masterful one-shot Western from a script by Van Hamme using the direct color mode for the Signé collection. In January 2003, the collection “Le Lombard En Marge” featured the Western’s original script written by Van Hamme and illustrated and annotated by Rosinski. This allowed for Rosinski to get intimately acquainted with the authors and see behind the scenes of the comics world. Rosinski currently lives in Switzerland where he continues to draw for the Thorgal series and supervises the development of the parallel series of the Mondes de Thorgal.
Interview - Grzegorz Rosinski
Grzegorz, how did the Polish illustrator that you were in 1976 end up working with Jean Van Hamme on a comics magazine from the West?
We met by accident through a friend of a friend. It was a happy coincidence! I was already known in Poland, but I was looking for something different. I wanted to really get to work and show off my skills with my paper and my pencils. I had already drawn pages for Le Tombone Illustré, the Spirou supplement, but Jean was the first to really trust me with something bigger. And that’s how I became the first illustrator from an Eastern country to work on a project in the West!
Why Thorgal? Was it because you liked mythology?
No, that’s just how it happened. I was living in Warsaw in a pretty difficult political climate. I was afraid of the censorship involving my mail being marked “For publication in the West.” Mentioning sex or politics was off limits. It was best to avoid historical references or allusions to actual cultures. After ruling out all of these topics, we were left with humanity. So we undertook the first global comic book, written for all readers everywhere.
Given these circumstances, how did you come to writing comic books? How did you learn the language of comic books and graphic novels?
I was influenced by comic books in general. But unlike a lot of my professional peers, I didn’t grow up with them. I only had a few copies of the Vaillant magazine that were distributed by the French Communist Party and a few comic strips from Dutch communist magazines. As for the “language,” telling a story visually is like literature, poetry, or cinema for other people. It’s a specific kind of psychological mindset. It’s not enough just to know how to draw or how to tell a story, you have to have other skills as well. But today I don’t even refer to myself as an illustrator. I “present visually,” that is, I tell a story in images. It’s no longer just a “bande” (strip) or something that’s “dessinée” (illustrated, from the French term bande desinée). I find the American term “graphic novel” much more appropriate. Before, we made comic strips. Now, the media evolving like this has changed the whole setup.
From the beginning, you’ve always had the need to constantly evolve and in some ways, to put yourself at risk. Why is that?
It’s pretty simple –so that I don’t fall asleep! In our creative line of work, you need adrenaline all the time. Without it, it always feels like we’ve already done things. I don’t want to redo things that I’ve already done. Each person has his own way of working, but I go to great lengths to avoid finding a particular “style.” When you find one and the public accepts it, you stop making progress and it’s really sad! Time goes on and our perception of things is determined by the world around us. And the world is changing—you have to realize that and try to keep your approach fresh.
What are the ways you’ve collaborated with Yves Sente?
I usually work only with my friends. Yves Sente and I have known each other for years, and we have had a great working relationship. I prefer working with scriptwriters who are not illustrators because it dulls my imagination. On the other hand, I’ve never been tempted to write scripts. I only work in a kind of symbiosis. The rules are simple: the minute I accept the script, I don’t offer any ideas, and vice versa. All I need is a short description of the characters and the objects in the script. My job is to do composition and staging. And when I’ve taken on a challenge, I don’t make any suggestions because I don’t want to rob my scriptwriter of the joy of being a writer. And like I’m always telling people, I’m lucky to be working with the best around!
