I began my translator career in 1993 as an in-house translator and language trainer for an Indonesian-Canadian joint operation body operating an enhanced oil recovery project in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. When my contract ended in 1995, I decided to pursue a formal career in language education while at the same time keep practicing translation as a freelancer. My career in language education has brought me to work in different educational settings with students of various age groups, both in Indonesia and overseas, teaching and designing courses in EFL, BIPA (Indonesian as a Foreign Language), and English literature.
Education
I graduated from IKIP Bandung (now Indonesia University of Education) with Doktorandus degree in English Language Education and pursued a master’s degree in American Studies at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania, USA, completing 33 credit hours in American history, literature, philosophy and politics.
Translator Credentials
As a translator, I have received two credentials from the University of Indonesia (legal document translator for the language pairs of English – Indonesian and Indonesian – English) and one from the Association of Indonesian Translators (general document for the language pair of Indonesian – English).
Clientele
Throughout my twenty four years of professional practice as a freelance translator, I have had a wide range of clientele, both domestic and international. Most of my regular clients are government offices and bodies, mining companies, non-governmental organizations, notaries public and educational institutions and academicians.
Interests
I have a wide range of interests. Chief among them are, obviously, language and language studies, literature, history, philosophy and politics. However, I am also deeply interested in photography, films, popular culture, and arts in general. Being an avid photographer, I have managed three photo blogs, one of which had won me assignments with the BBC World and Channel News Asia Singapore to make documentary films about Bandung, the city where I live. I have also had a solo exhibition, given talks about photography, become a tutor and curator for a number of photography exhibitions. My interest and activities in film and film studies have also won recognition from Bandung Film Forum, where I became its analyst/reviewer in the quarterly festivals it regularly held until 2015. |
