So finden wir einerseits an der niederschlagsreichen Ostküste, in den Regenwäldern von Nordqueensland, bis zu 100 verschiedene Pflanzenfamilien pro km2, das ist der weltweit größte Artenreichtum von Pflanzen.
Andererseits haben auch die regenarmen Gebiete im Zentrum eine fast geschlossene Vegetationsdecke mit einer enormen Vielfalt an Pflanzenarten. Selbst Landschaften mit einem durchschnittlichen Jahresniederschlag von nur 100 mm - in anderen Teilen der Welt Vollwüsten - verwandeln sich nach Regenfällen in Blütenteppiche. Dagegen gibt es hier kaum Kakteengewächse. So gingen denn auch die australischen Pflanzen – so wie die Tiere – andere Wege als in der übrigen Welt.

Charakteristisch für Diabetes mellitus ist ein erhöhter Blutzuckerspiegel (Hyperglykämie). Bei Nicht-Diabetikern sorgt das körpereigene Hormon Insulin dafür, dass der aus der Nahrung gewonnene Zucker (Glucose) in die Körperzellen gelangt und dort in lebensnotwendige Energie umgewandelt wird. Dadurch liegt der Blutzuckerspiegel zwischen 80 und 120 mg/dl (4,4 und 6,6 mmol/l), bzw. nach dem Essen auch bis zu 140 mg/dl (7,7 mmol/l). Bei Diabetikern hingegen bleibt der Blutzuckerspiegel infolge eines Insulinmangels bzw. einer mangelnden Wirkung des vorhandenen Insulins erhöht. Experten sprechen auch von einem Zuckerstau im Blut, der mit einer Unterversorgung der Zellen einhergeht. Die Folge: Dem Körper wird nicht ausreichend Energie zugeführt. Die Betroffenen fühlen sich müde und hungrig. Der überschüssige Zucker wird mit dem Harn ausgeschieden (Glucosurie). Daher auch der Name Diabetes mellitus – „der honigsüße Durchfluss“.

Source text - German Was ist eine Parodontitis?
Die Parodontitis ist eine durch Bakterien ausgelöste Entzündung des Zahnhalteapparates (Zahnfleisch, Knochen, Verbindungsfasern), die zum Verlust des Zahnstützgewebes und somit im weiteren Verlauf zur Lockerung und zum Verlust der Zähne führt.
Wie entsteht eine Parodontitis?
Nach heutigem Wissensstand weiß man, dass diese Erkrankung und ihr weiterer Verlauf durch bestimmte Bakterien (anaerob gramnegative Bakterien) ausgelöst wird. Man kann unterschiedliche Verlaufsformen der Parodontitis unterscheiden, die durch die Aggressivität der Bakterienflora bestimmt werden. Faktoren wie z. B. Rauchen, Überbelastung einzelner Zähne, Diabetes, Schwangerschaft können die Parodontitis beeinflussen, aber nicht auslösen.
Sowohl durch die Abwehrreaktion des Körpers als auch durch die Toxine der Bakterien selbst wird der Zahnhalteapparat abgebaut. Somit werden die Zähne mit der Zeit immer lockerer. Die Parodontitis wird vom Patienten meist nicht oder zu spät bemerkt, zumal der Verlauf fast immer schmerzfrei ist. Neueste wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen haben einen Zusammenhang der Parodontitis mit Allgemeinerkrankungen ergeben, wie z.B. Herzinfarkt, Schlaganfall, Arteriosklerose und sogar eine erhöhte Gefahr von Frühgeburten nachgewiesen.

How does periodontitis develop?

The latest scientific research has shown a connection between periodontitis and general diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, atherosclerosis and has even demonstrated an increased risk of premature births.
