Source text - English What is so special about Celtic coins?

Fifteen years ago the world and his wife woke up to the Celts. Suddenly, as if from nowhere, the Celts and Celtic culture became a popular worldwide passion. It is hard to pin down the precise reason for this global awakening of interest in the Celts. But I believe it began with the exhibition The Celts, the Origins of Europe which was held at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice in 1991. Assembling over 2,200 works from 200 museums in 24 countries, this proved to be a sensationally successful exhibition which spawned similar Celtic displays around the world, plus a series of glossy coffee-table books about the Celts which were translated into many languages.
Since 1991 Celtomania, which may be defined as an irrational obsession with the Celts and all things Celtic, has become a global phenomenon of pandemic proportions. Today thousands of otherwise normal, healthy people have been infected by Celtomania and patients from Japan to New Jersey are exhibiting symptoms of it. Many TV programmes have recently been made about the ancient Celts and screened in peak-viewing time, attracting large audiences. The shelves of bookshops throughout Europe and America are sagging under the weight of books on Celtic art, Celtic archaeology, Celtic history, Celtic languages, Celtic literature, Celtic mythology and Celtic religion. First identified over a century ago by Saloman Reinach, les celtomanes now populate every part of the civilised world and Celtomania, far from diminishing, seems to be growing every year.
Yes, the Celts have become big business these days – ‘commercially viable’ as they say – and appear to be poised to grow bigger, even more popular, even more profitable. I am told that websites which feature the word ‘Celtic’ are visited more often than those that don’t and I have noticed that more than one university academic has made a bit of extra money on the side by quoting ‘Celts’ and ‘Celtic’ liberally. You see, ‘Celtic’ is a magic adjective – a magic adjective that sells. ‘Celtic’ sells not only books and TV programmes, not only tarot packs and folk music, not only tourist trips to Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. ‘Celtic’ sells ancient coins and antiquities too. .
However, Celtic coin studies are much older than modern manifestations of Celtomania and date back to the 19th century. In England Sir John Evans’s Coins of the Ancient Britons, illustrated by F.W.Fairholt, was published in 1864, with a supplement in 1890. In France Henri de la Tour’s l’Atlas des monnaies gauloises, illustrated by Léon Dardel, was first published in 1892, has been reprinted many times since and is still the standard reference book for Gaulish coins. Its long-standing popularity is a testament to the enduring popularity of Celtic coins, not only in Europe, but all over the world. Whilst it is true that Celtic coin collecting has been partially fuelled by current Celtomania, it is by no means dependent on today’s craze for the Celts and its roots run much deeper.
What is so special about Celtic coins? Why have they been attracting the attention of many collectors of different nationalities for well over a hundred years? Why have Celtic coins become the fastest growing sector of the ancient coin market? I have been asking myself such questions for half a century, initially as an amateur student of archaeology – I excavated my first Celtic coins in 1952 – and latterly as a collector and dealer. In one sense, there are as many different reasons for collecting Celtic coins as there are Celtic collectors; each of us has our own highly personal mixture of feelings about these coins. However, underlying all these individual preferences, I believe that there are seven fundamental factors influencing the present popularity of Celtic coins – seven basic reasons why so many different people are collecting them today. These seven reason many be summarised as follows:
1. The first coins. Celtic coins were the first coins made in France (except Marseilles), Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, alpine Italy, central Spain, south-east England and parts of eastern Europe. Many of us, including Americans with European ancestors, feel a bond with the ancient Celts and their coins.
2. Artistic beauty. Celtic coins are miniature masterpieces of Celtic art – an art style which is admired worldwide for its flamboyant flowing vegetal forms, its Druid symbolism and its anthropomorphic motifs.
3. History and mystery. Celtic coins are micro-museums of Celtic culture and Celtic history – a history made famous by heroic freedom fighters such as Vercingetorix, Caratacos and Queen Boudica. These coins also carry echoes of long-lost Celtic legends and mythic mysteries.
4. Great rarity. Celtic coins are generally much rarer than Roman coins – at least a thousand times rarer on average. This is not surprising. Far fewer Celtic coins were minted, in much smaller runs, over a much shorter timespan.
5. Good value. Celtic coins often cost much less than Greek and Roman coins of comparable quality and scarcity – less than half the price on average. This is basically because there are fewer Celtic buyers and fewer Celtic dealers. The Celtic market is still young and growing.
6. More challenging. Celtic coins are felt to be less predictable and more challenging than most, because less is known about them and few can be accurately dated (the Celts left no written records). Consequently exciting new discoveries are often made by collectors, not just by scholars.
7. Profit potential. Celtic coins can be a good investment if bought wisely with expert advice. A recent review reveals that since 1993 the majority of commoner Celtic types have more than doubled in value and that some top-grade rarities have trebled their worth. This is due to demand outstripping supply.
The growth of metal detecting during the past twenty years has undoubtedly made Celtic coins more readily available to all collectors, however modest their monthly budget may be. Moreover, the recent increase in Celtic numismatic literature has also helped to make Celtic coins more accessible to anyone who can read English, French or German. Unlike the classical and medieval series, the Celtic series of coinages is still relatively unexplored and the international Celtic coin market is still comparatively undeveloped, as you can see by looking on the internet. For the adventurous collector seeking new thrills and new opportunities, I would therefore say that now could be an excellent time – certainly an exciting time – to start collecting Celtic coins. My advice to beginners, as always, is buy some good books, visit some good museums and websites, and talk to some good dealers. There are plenty around these days.
