English to Spanish: Watson and the Shark, translation of an article that appeared on the magazine Opus Habana in Havana, Cuba
Source text - English Watson and the Shark
It was oppressively hot. The water in Havana harbour rose and fell like a gently undulating mirror. On the ships, groups of seamen lay torpid and monosyllabic in the shade. The only movement on board was the flap of a drying sail as the occasional breath of wind crossed the harbour. The humid air felt like warm, wet silk. Storm clouds were gathering in the East.
The captain of a ship from Boston had decided to go ashore. Some of his crew had been told to lower a boat to row him to the wharf. As they waited at the oars in sweltering silence they saw Brook Watson, one of the youngest crew members, dive naked over the side of the ship into the glassy green water. Watching jealously as the boy swam in splashy circles, they longed to throw off their own clothes and jump into the cool sea. But suddenly their envy turned to horror. The unsuspecting Watson was being pursued by a shark.
Brook Watson was an orphan who, on the death of his parents, had been sent to America to live with a distant relation named Levens, in business at Boston. The boy was about 14 years old. His family had been poor: Mr Watson was a sailor and Brook’s sister sold hot buns in the street. Mr Levens decided to find his charge a position on a merchant vessel sailing for the Caribbean.
In 1749 the ship on which Watson was serving entered Havana harbour. It can only be assumed that she did so under foreign colours, or by some private arrangement, for at that time Spain maintained a strict monopoly of trade with her colonies. Havana was the focal point of Spanish American maritime traffic. The port was strongly fortified, and an English ship would not normally have been permitted to pass the batteries of cannon on either side of the harbour mouth.
Long after that terrible day in Havana, a painting of the shark attack was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The presence in the picture of an English man-of-war with her red ensign flying is not the only liberty that the artist, John Singleton Copley, took with the subject. The scene looks like a stage set. The mouth of the harbour and the Morro Castle are seen in the background at the top right of the picture and there are several ships at anchor, flying filmy flags and pennants. In the middle and far distance a thunderous light filters through dramatic clouds. The towers and roofs of the city are enveloped in a pinkish haze. Against this slightly dreamlike background it is as if a powerful spotlight has been directed at the main subject of the painting. The action is terrifyingly and theatrically illuminated.
Suspended in the green water, the pale body of Brook Watson is paralysed with shock. A shark surges towards him, its snaggle-toothed maw gaping. A second predator lurks behind the boat. There is blood in the water. Two of Watson’s shipmates desperately strain across the gunwhale to reach him, the bo’sun clutching the younger of the two to prevent him from sharing Watson’s fate. Four sailors pull at the oars and a black man stands on the seat of the boat, holding the end of a rope. He has thrown it to Watson but the boy is unable to respond and the line hangs tragically slack. In the bow, another man lunges at the shark with a boat-hook. All the sailors’ faces wear expressions of horrified and concentrated attention.
Watson and the Shark (Fig. 1) caused a sensation when it was exhibited in 1778. Shark attacks capture people’s imagination. There is a terrible fascination in strange sea beasts that rise like Nemesis from the deeps to seize unsuspecting humans as they frolic foolishly at the edges of the ocean. Doubtless all manner of Freudian theory could be produced about their symbolising the menaces lurking, potentially out of control, in the murky depths of our subconscious. The fact is that shark attacks are relatively rare, and as enthusiasts at the American Elasmobranch Society are at pains to point out with detailed statistical evidence, humans are considerably more likely to be bitten by squirrels, hamsters, rabbits, racoons and each other than by sharks.
There is still speculation as to which species the painting depicts. The pink lips and cat’s eye with which the artist John Singleton Copley endowed Watson’s assailant render identification difficult. It could be a Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo cuvier - Fig. 2), common around Cuba’s coastline and particularly prone to feeding in harbour areas. Members of that species aren’t fussy about their diet, happily ingesting everything from turtles to tin cans, and a Tiger Shark wouldn’t have turned up its nose at a juicy Englishman. But it is also entirely possible that the monster was Carcharodon carcharias, the Great White (Fig. 3) - the sea’s top predator - and that the effect the artist wished his work to have on the public was very similar to that created by Steven Spielberg 200 years later in Jaws. (Fig. 4)
Sharks are intriguing, terrifying and beautiful. With their sinuous swimming motion and hydrodynamic forms, they are the essence of streamlined grace. Through sensory pores on their noses they can detect the electric signals given off by the muscles of their prey from a considerable distance. Great Whites have a blank, black stare – ‘dead eyes like a doll’s’ (1) – and they seem to roll their eyes up in ghastly ecstasy as they feed, an impression given by the pale membrane which rises over the eyeball to protect it from the struggles of the shark’s prey. Whenever a shark loses a tooth it is replaced by a new one from a secondary row - they are continually growing new teeth, and get through thousands in their lifetimes. Much is made in Jaws of how sharks grab human beings and drag them underwater. Brilliant use is also made in the film of the agonising suspense of sitting about in a boat on a quiet sea awaiting a repeat of a shark attack, and of the frenzied activity on board when it comes.
Both these situations arose during the attack on Brook Watson. ‘The sailors had the afflicting sight of seeing him seized and precipitated down the flood with his voracious assailant, before they could put off to attempt his deliverance. They however hastened towards the place where they had disappeared, in anxious expectation of seeing the body rise. In about two minutes they discovered the body rise at about a hundred yards distance, but ere they could reach him, he was a second time seized by the shark, and again sunk from their sight. The sailors now took the precaution to place a man in the bow of the boat, provided with a hook to strike the fish, should it appear within reach, and repeat its attempt at seizing the body. In less than two minutes they discovered the youth on the surface of the water, and the monster still in eager pursuit of him; and at the very instant he was about to be seized the third time, the shark was struck with the boat hook, and driven from his prey.’(2) This behaviour is characteristic of the feeding habits of the Great White. It is known for taking a bite and moving away for a short time, waiting for its prey to weaken through loss of blood, then returning to the attack.
The situation in the painting looks grim, which is exactly what the artist intended by his vivid representation of the horror of the scene. But against all odds Brook Watson survived. The contemporary account written, it is believed, by Watson himself, continues: ‘Suffice it to say, in regard to the singular fate of Mr Watson, the shark seized him both times by the right leg; in the first attack, all the flesh was stripped off the bone from the calf downwards; in the second, the foot was divided from the leg by the ancle. By the skill of the surgeon, and the aid of a good habit of body, after suffering an amputation of the limb a little below the knee, the youth who was thus wonderfully and literally saved from the jaws of death received a perfect cure in about three months’. (4)
The disappearance of Watson’s right foot is hinted at by the composition of the painting, but the viewer has no idea whether or not the boy was saved. The sense of suspense is masterfully nurtured by the powerful movement inherent in the design as the shark swoops upon Watson, his friends stretch to reach him, and the sailor prepares to drive the boat-hook into the body of the monster. The outcome is unknown. Does the boat-hook get the fish, or the fish get the boy? In the foreground of the painting all is furious activity, but one gets the impression that no-one else in Havana harbour realises what is happening, for in the background everything is utterly tranquil.
Copley’s reputation benefited hugely from the work’s exhibition at the Royal Academy. ‘The softness of the colouring, the animation which is displayed in the countenance of the sailors, the efforts of the drowning boy, and the frightened appearance of the man assaulting the shark, constitute altogether a degree of excellence that reflect the highest honour on the composer’(4) enthused the Painter’s Mirrour. But the acclaim was not unanimous and the representation of the shark found scant favour with the critics. ‘The figures of the men in the boat, with the expression in each of their countenances, cannot be too much praised,’ wrote one journalist, ‘and at the same time the other parts of the picture cannot be too severely reprehended… the shark is neither like anything “in Heaven above, on the Earth beneath, or in the Waters under the Earth”. Exclusive of its want of resemblance to what it is designed to represent, it is destitute of that spirit and eagerness which a voracious fish must necessarily express when so near its prey as the picture shews it. Add to this, the sea should be of a foam with the lashing of the shark’s tail, and the boat, as almost every man leans on one side, in order to save the boy, ought to lie nearly gunnel to, whereas the waves are as placid as those of the Thames when there’s little or no wind, and the boat as steady as if it was in that sort of safe sea which is occasionally exhibited on the stage of Sadler’s-Wells.’ (5) The artist was undeterred by such criticism. Responding to the excitement the painting had caused, he produced a full-sized replica and a smaller, more vertical representation of the same subject. The picture became even better-known the following year, when Valentine Green produced a mezzotint from it, entitled Youth Saved from a Shark.
Fame had kept John Singleton Copley waiting for some time. He had been born on 26 July 1738 in Boston where his father Richard owned a tobacco shop, but Richard Copley died before his son’s tenth birthday. In May 1748 his widow, Mary, married Peter Pelham, an artist who trained his stepson in the arts of mezzotint and portraiture. After Pelham’s death, Copley used his studio to produce prints which he sold to support the family, and gradually developed a reputation as a portrait-painter. He dreamed, however, of taking up history painting, which he thought a far nobler profession than mere portraiture, and of travelling to Europe. He was determined to escape from Boston, which he considered a Philistine backwater. ‘Was it not for preserving the resembla[n]ce of perticular persons,’ he wrote in 1767, ‘painting would not be known in the plac[e]. The people generally regard it no more than any other usefull trade as they sometimes term it, like that of a carpenter tailor or shew maker.’ (6)
Eventually he arrived in London, whence he continued to Italy to spend a year studying Renaissance painting and classical sculpture. Returning to England, he went on painting portraits to feed the family, but also began to experiment. In the depiction of Brook Watson’s encounter with the shark, which is thought to have been commissioned by Watson himself, Copley saw his chance to invest a contemporary event with the grand heroism of history painting. Watson was delighted with the result, stating in his letter to the Morning Chronicle that ‘…the ingenious artist has… given the affecting incident the most animated representation, the powers of the pencil can bestow.’ (7) He donated the picture to Christ’s Hospital School in his will as an illustration of triumph over adversity. It now hangs in Washington, while the copies are held in collections at Boston and Detroit.
Numerous references and influences may be seen in Watson and the Shark. John Singleton Copley never visited Havana, but his depiction of the city and the Morro is reasonably accurate. It is likely that he studied Serres, Durnford and Canot’s prints of views taken during and after the English invasion of 1762 to glean topographical knowledge of the setting of the shark attack. It must be admitted that the shark itself is less of a success - Copley had probably never seen one and it shows. The composition of the painting seems to owe a debt to two engravings after Rubens: Philippe-Joseph Tassaert’s Jonah Thrown into the Sea (Fig. 6) and Schelte à Bolswert’s Miraculous Draught of Fishes. (Fig. 5) Copley owned a copy of the latter print, although it is not known when he acquired it. By endowing his painting with references to the tempestuous heroism of Rubens’ Biblical images, Copley bestowed an elevated status upon his protagonists.
The presence of the black sailor in the boat is of particular interest. A preliminary sketch for the painting shows a white man with long hair in the central position (Fig. 7) and it is possible that Copley was responding to a request or a memory of Watson’s when he changed his mind about the figure. The identity of the black man is a mystery, but Copley had painted him before – Head of a Negro (Fig. 8), now in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts, is a wonderfully vivid portrait study. The figure of Watson himself is strongly reminiscent of one of the figures in the sculptural group Laocoön and his Sons (Fig. 9), of which Copley once owned a cast. It could also be a form of artist’s homage to one of the figures - the boy dressed in blue - in Raphael’s Transfiguration. (Fig 10) By these associations with great classical works, Copley lifted his work out of the realms of reportage and placed it on the exalted plane of history painting.
It is no wonder that Brook Watson was pleased with the painting: Copley’s dramatic portrayal accorded exactly with his memory of the event and with its effect on his future. It is often only when we gain a sense of our own mortality that we begin to savour life to the full. Becoming a snack for a Cuban shark at the age of fourteen gave Watson a head start. He lived vividly, with a gusto which occasionally earned him criticism from more cautious quarters. The maxim Carpe diem might have been created for him.
After Watson had learned to walk with a crutch he was discharged from hospital in Havana and returned to Boston. There he found that Levens’ business had failed and he had left town. Watson returned to his former lodgings but the landlady, afraid that she was going to be saddled with a penniless, crippled orphan, called in the city authorities. When they arrived at the house a furious argument broke out between the officers, the mistress of the house and Watson, who after his brush with a shark was a match for any landlady. Her other tenants all emerged from their rooms to enjoy the drama. One of them, a Captain Huston who commanded a trading schooner from Chignecto, offered Watson a passage on his ship to Nova Scotia.
The year was 1750. French activity at Beauséjour had stimulated the British to construct Fort Lawrence. Huston traded with the French and the Indians and, after Fort Lawrence was garrisoned, with the English. He treated Watson like a son, and the boy became generally popular. In 1755 he was appointed commissary under Colonel Robert Monckton at the siege of Beauséjour and in 1758 served in the same position under Wolfe at the siege of Louisburg.
In 1759 Watson moved to London, from where he traded with America until about 1774. He married Helen Campbell, daughter of an Edinburgh goldsmith, in 1760. They had no children and Watson’s career went from strength to strength. In January 1772 he became a member of the first committee of Lloyd’s and played an important part in its development. Just before the outbreak of the Revolution he visited the American colonies. There, whilst ostensibly travelling on business, he worked as a secret service agent for the British government, gauging local opinion of the country’s future. Richard Montgomery wrote in terms of heavy irony to General Schuyler in November after the capture of Montreal: ‘I send some choice letters of that worthy and steady friend to the Colonies, Brook Watson, whose zeal is only to be equalled by his sincerity. You will think them of importance enough, I believe, to be communicated to General Washington and the congress.’ (8)
In 1782, Watson was appointed Commissary General of Canada under Sir Guy Carleton but returned to England when peace was made in 1783. Later, he became Commissary General to the Duke of York’s army from 1793-95, and Commissary General to the forces in Great Britain from 1798-1806. This last post was created specially for him by the Government. He was a director of the Bank of England at various times between 1784 and 1807, and Deputy Governor from 1806 to 1807. Lord Liverpool described him as ‘one of the most honourable men ever known’.(9)
From 1784 to 1793 Brook Watson served as a Member of Parliament. He was an admirer and supporter of William Pitt and is shown in Sayer’s caricature addressing the House of Commons. (Fig. 12) He was not the best of speakers and is described as ‘frequently intervening in debates, often self-contradictory, he talked in platitudes even when he could have spoken from practical experience.’ (10) His gung-ho attitude was also satirised in the Rolliad:
‘Modest Watson, on his wooden leg
That leg, in which such wondrous art is shown,
It almost seems to serve him like his own,
Oh! Had the monster, who for breakfast ate
that Luckless limb, his nobler noddle met,
The best of workmen, nor the best of wood,
Had scarce supplied him with a head so good’. (11)
Wooden-headed or not, Watson served as Lord Mayor of London from 1796 – 1797. His was a turbulent year of office, during which the country was at war and in a state of great disturbance. Harvests had been bad, money was required to buy allies, taxation was increased, there was widespread discontent, the sailors of the Royal Navy mutinied and the Bank of England gave up specie payments. At a meeting of Common Hall on 12 April 1797 a resolution was brought forward ‘to investigate the real cause of the awful and alarming state of public affairs’. (12) A disorderly argument ensued, in which the Liverymen asserted that Ministers had ‘plunged the country into an unnecessary and unjust war.’ (13) Watson ruled the resolution out of order and terminated the proceedings by having the mace taken up without further discussion, for which he was subsequently censured.
On 5 December 1803, Watson was created a baronet. The coat of arms he requested makes numerous references to his encounter with the shark. His motto, Scuto Divino, means ‘shielded by God’. At the apex of the design is Neptune, God of the Sea, fending off an attacking shark with his trident. In the top left corner of the shield is Watson's lost leg. (Fig. 13) His Grant of Arms reads ‘He… requested his Grace’s Warrant for our devising granting and exemplifying to him such Arms as may contain an allusion to an awful event in his Life, and be a memorial of his gratitude to Heaven for his signal Preservation on that occasion.’ (14) The arms that were granted to Watson by the College of Heralds are described as: ‘Ermine on a Cheveron engrailed Azure between three Martlets Sable, that in Base being surmounted by a Key, ward upwards Or, and a Sword proper, pomel and hilt Gold in Saltire; three Crescents Argent, a Canton of the second charged with a human Leg erect and erased below the Knee also proper and for the Crest on a wreath of the Colours Issuant from the Waves a Demi Neptune proper crowned Gold mantled Vert the dexter Arm elevated the hand grasping a Trident Or in the attitude of striking, the sinister supporting a Shield Argent repelling a Shark in the act of seizing its Prey also proper.’ (15)
Brook Watson died in his early seventies on October 2 1807 at East Sheen in Surrey, and was buried at Mortlake parish church. His obituary stated ‘He was, through life, to his King and Country a constitutional loyal subject; a diligent, zealous and faithful servant; a firm, upright and merciful magistrate; to his wife, a most affectionate and tender husband; to his relations, a kind and substantial friend; in his friendships constant; in faith a firm Christian; in deed, a benevolent honest man.’ (16)
Such eulogising is not uncommon in obituaries, although there are numerous references in the letters of friends and colleagues to Watson’s kind-heartedness and generosity. But it was the qualities of energy, optimism and courage that distinguished his attitude to life. In Spring 1755, in Novia Scotia, a few years after his Havana experience, Watson realised that a herd of cattle belonging to his patron, Captain Huston, had crossed the Missiguash River and were grazing in French territory. Unperturbed by the potential danger, his lack of a leg or the fact that the river was full of floating ice, Watson swam across it, rounded up the cows and brought them back through the freezing water to safety. Later, he wrote on the back of a print of the event:
Did not the energetick mind have powers
To wing her flights beyond the present hours,
Her boundless sphere were narrowed to a span,
And life a thing not worthy of a man.
Snatch from his daring-ness the Glorious Prize,
And what remains to prompt him to be wise?
Bound his aspiring wishes by the grave,
And what shall prompt him to be good or brave?

La presencia en el cuadro de un navío inglés con su insignia roja, no es la única libertad que se toma el artista, John Singleton Copley, en el asunto. La obra parece un escenario decorado. La boca de la bahía y el Castillo del Morro se ven, en segundo plano, en la parte derecha superior de la pintura; y hay varios barcos anclados con banderas y banderines ondeantes. Podría ser un tiburón tigre (Galeocerdo cuvier - Fig. 2), común en la línea costera de Cuba y particularmente propenso a alimentarse en las áreas cercanas al puerto. Los miembros de esa especie no son muy exquisitos respecto a su dieta: felizmente ingieren todo, desde tortugas hasta latas. Un tiburón tigre no habría despreciado un apetitoso inglés. Sin embargo, es completamente posible que el monstruo fuese Carcharodon carcharias, el Gran Tiburón Blanco (Fig. 3) - el mayor depredador del mundo marino - y que el efecto que deseaba el artista produjese en el público fuese similar al de Steven Spielberg 200 años después con su Tiburón sangriento. (Fig. 4)
Los tiburones son intrigantes, aterradores y bellos. Son la esencia de la gracia en el diseño, con su sinuosa manera de nadar y sus formas hidrodinámicas. Son capaces de detectar las señales eléctricas emitidas por los músculos de sus presas, desde una distancia considerable, a través de los poros sensoriales ubicados en la piel de sus narices. El Gran Tiburón Blanco posee una oscura mirada inexpresiva – “mirada muerta como la de una muñeca” (1) - y parece como si mirase hacia arriba con los ojos en blanco mientras se alimenta - la pálida membrana que se eleva por encima del globo del ojo, para protegerlo del forcejeo de su presa, da esa impresión de éxtasis horroroso. Cada vez que un tiburón pierde un diente, uno nuevo aparece gracias a una hilera secundaria – continuamente mudan sus dientes y si se contaran todos a lo largo de sus vidas, la cifra alcanzaría los miles. La película Tiburón sangriento muestra como los tiburones atrapan a los humanos y los arrastran hacia las profundidades. También hace uso brillantemente de un suspenso agonizante en las escenas donde se aguarda, en una embarcación, por el siguiente ataque del tiburón y se produce a bordo una actividad frenética cuando aparece la bestia.
Ambas situaciones se presentaron durante el ataque a Brook Watson. “Los marineros presenciaban una escena que afligía: vieron que el voraz agresor asía al joven y lo llevaba rápidamente hacia las profundidades antes de que pudiesen hacer un intento de liberarlo. No obstante, se precipitaron hacia el sitio donde víctima y victimario habían desaparecido con la ansiosa esperanza de ver al cuerpo emerger de las aguas. A los dos minutos notaron que el cuerpo emergía a cerca de cien yardas de distancia, pero no pudieron alcanzarlo pues el tiburón lo capturaba por segunda vez y lo hundía nuevamente. Los marineros tomaron la precaución de colocar un hombre en la proa de la embarcación con un gancho de bote para golpear al pez en caso de que apareciese en las inmediaciones e intentase atrapar el cuerpo otra vez. En menos de dos minutos descubrieron al joven en la superficie y al ansioso monstruo aún tras él. Justo en el instante que Watson iba a ser atrapado por tercera vez, el tiburón recibía el golpe del gancho y perdía a su presa.” (2) Este comportamiento es característico de los hábitos alimentarios del Gran Tiburón Blanco. Se conoce que primero muerde a la presa y se aleja por un rato en espera de que la víctima se debilite debido a la pérdida de sangre; luego vuelve a atacar.
La situación en la pintura es terrible y esto es exactamente lo que se propuso el artista mediante la vívida representación del horror de la escena. Sin embargo, Brook Watson sobrevivió. El relato contemporáneo escrito, según se cree, por Watson, continúa: “Basta con decir, respecto al singular destino del Sr. Watson, que el tiburón lo atrapó las dos veces por la pierna derecha; en el primer ataque, toda la carne fue arrancada del hueso de la pantorrilla hacia abajo; en el segundo, el pie fue separado de la pierna en la zona del tobillo. Gracias a la habilidad del cirujano y la ayuda que significaba contar con una excelente constitución física, después de sufrir una amputación del miembro más allá de la rodilla, el joven, quien fue maravillosamente y literalmente salvado de las mandíbulas de la muerte, se curó a la perfección en tres meses”. (4)
La desaparición de la pierna derecha de Watson se insinúa en la composición de la pintura, pero el observador no tiene idea de si el muchacho se salva o no. Se recrea magistralmente el suspenso a través del poderoso movimiento inherente al diseño cuando el tiburón se abalanza sobre Watson, sus amigos se estiran para alcanzarlo y el marinero se alista para golpear al monstruo. Se desconoce el desenlace. ¿Atrapó el gancho al pez o este último al muchacho? En el primer plano de la pintura se observa una actividad frenética, pero da la impresión que nadie más en el puerto de La Habana se da cuenta de lo que sucede, pues en el segundo plano, la tranquilidad es absoluta.
La reputación de Copley se benefició con la exhibición de la obra en la Academia Real. “La suavidad de los colores, la animación que se exhibe en el semblante de los marineros, los esfuerzos del muchacho que se ahoga y la expresión asustada del hombre que ataca al tiburón, muestran en conjunto un grado de excelencia que honra inmensamente al creador” (4) opinó entusiasmado el Painter's Mirrour. No obstante, la aclamación no fue unánime y la representación del tiburón recibió escasos elogios por parte de la crítica. “Las figuras de los hombres en el bote, con esa expresión en sus semblantes, son dignas de infinitas alabanzas” - escribió un periodista - “tanto como las otras partes de la pintura merecen censuras severas... el tiburón no se parece a nada “de cielo arriba, de tierra abajo o de las aguas subterráneas”. Además de no parecerse a lo que está diseñado para representar, la bestia no posee ese espíritu y esa ansiedad que un pez voraz debe necesariamente expresar cuando tiene a la presa tan cerca como muestra la pintura. Por otra parte, el mar debía estar espumoso debido al coletazo del tiburón y la embarcación, con todos los hombres inclinados hacia un lado para salvar al muchacho, debía reposar casi sobre la borda; pero las olas son tan plácidas como las del Támesis cuando hay poco o ningún viento y el bote es tan estable como si estuviese en esa especie de mar seguro que se exhibe en ocasiones en el escenario del Sadler’s – Wells•” (5) (El Sadler’s Wells es un gran teatro londinense que se fundó en 1683. Todavía existe en el mismo sitio pero el edificio actual es muy moderno. El teatro reabrió sus puertas en 1998 después de una reconstrucción total). El artista no se desanimó ante tal crítica. En respuesta a la excitación que causó la pintura, produjo una réplica de dimensiones iguales y otra más pequeña con una representación más vertical del mismo tema. La pintura se conoció mejor aún al año siguiente cuando Valentine Green produjo un grabado al agua tinta, basado en esta, con el título de Youth Saved from a Shark (Joven salvado de un tiburón).
John Singleton Copley no gozó de la fama rápidamente. Había nacido el 26 de julio de 1738 en Boston donde su padre Richard poseía una tienda de tabaco. Richard Copley murió antes de que su hijo cumpliese los diez años. En mayo de 1748, su viuda, Mary, contrajo nupcias con Peter Pelham, un artista que entrenó al hijastro en las artes del aguatinta y el retrato. Al morir Peter Pelham, Copley utilizaba su estudio para producir grabados que vendía con el propósito de mantener a la familia y gradualmente alcanzó cierta reputación como retratista. Sin embargo, soñaba con dedicarse a la pintura histórica - la consideraba una profesión más noble que el simple retrato- y con viajar a Europa. Había decidido escapar de Boston, según él, un lugar apartado y atrasado. El pintor escribió en 1767: “si la pintura no hubiese perpetuado la imagen de las personas, no se conocería en este lugar. Por lo general, las personas la ven como cualquier otro negocio, nombre que en ocasiones algunos utilizan como si hablasen del carpintero, el sastre o el zapatero” (6)
Finalmente, llegó a Londres y desde allí partió hacia Italia con el propósito de estudiar pintura renacentista y escultura clásica durante un año. Cuando regresó a Inglaterra, continuó pintando retratos para sostener a su familia pero también comenzó a experimentar. La representación del encuentro de Watson con el tiburón - probablemente el mismo Watson se lo haya encargado - fue su oportunidad para dotar a un acontecimiento contemporáneo del gran heroísmo de la pintura histórica. Watson estaba maravillado con los resultados. En una carta al Morning Chronicle declara: “... el ingenioso artista ha conferido al incidente la representación más viva que pueda dar el lápiz con sus poderes.”(7) Watson donó la pintura a la escuela del Christ’s Hospital (Hospital del Cristo) en su testamento como ejemplo del triunfo ante la adversidad. En la actualidad, el original se encuentra en Washington y las copias en colecciones de Boston y Detroit.
Numerosas referencias e influencias pueden notarse en Watson and the Shark. John Singleton Copley nunca visitó La Habana pero su representación de la ciudad y del Morro es bastante exacta. Es probable que haya estudiado los grabados de Serres, Durnford y Canot tomados durante y después de la invasión inglesa en 1762 con el fin de recopilar información topográfica sobre el sitio donde el tiburón atacó. Debe admitirse que el tiburón deja mucho que desear – probablemente Copley nunca haya visto uno y eso se puede notar. La composición de la obra parece estar en deuda con dos grabados inspirados en pinturas de Rubens: Jonah Thrown into the Sea (Jonás lanzado al mar - Fig. 6) de Philippe-Joseph Tassaert y Miraculous Draught of Fishes (El milagro de los peces - Fig. 5) de Schelte à Bolswert. Copley poseía una copia del último, aunque no se tiene la certeza de la fecha de su adquisición. Dotando a su pintura del heroísmo tempestuoso de las imágenes bíblicas de Rubens, Copley confirió a sus protagonistas una categoría elevada.
La presencia del marinero negro en el bote merece especial atención. Un boceto preliminar de la pintura muestra a un hombre blanco de cabello largo en la posición central (Fig. 7) y es posible que Copley haya respondido a una solicitud o un recuerdo de Watson cuando cambió de opinión respecto a la figura. La identidad del hombre negro es un misterio pero Copley ya lo había pintado antes - Head of a Negro (Cabeza de un negro - Fig. 8), actualmente en la colección del Instituto de Artes de Detroit, es un boceto maravillosamente vívido. La figura del mismo Watson evoca poderosamente una de las figuras del grupo escultórico Laocoonte y sus Hijos (Fig. 9), del cual Copley tuvo un molde. También pudo haber sido el homenaje del artista a una de las figuras - el muchacho vestido de azul - de La Transfiguración (Fig. 10) de Rafael. Gracias a estas asociaciones con los grandes clásicos, Copley hizo que su obra abandonase los terrenos del reportaje y se colocase en el plano elevado de la pintura histórica.
No resulta extraño que Brook Watson estuviese complacido con la pintura: la obra de Copley coincidía exactamente con sus recuerdos del acontecimiento y con los efectos que produjo en su vida futura. Sólo cuando encontramos el sentido de nuestra propia mortalidad comenzamos a disfrutar la vida a plenitud. La experiencia de convertirse en merienda para un tiburón cubano a los catorce años fue provechosa para Watson. Vivió intensamente con un entusiasmo que en ocasiones le granjeó las críticas de los más prudentes. La máxima carpe diem podría haberse creado exclusivamente para él.
Cuando Watson aprendió a caminar con muletas fue dado de alta del hospital de La Habana y regresó a Boston. Al llegar a la ciudad, se enteró de que el negocio de Levens había fracasado y que su pariente había abandonado el lugar. Watson se dirigió a su antigua pensión pero la casera, temerosa de cargar con la responsabilidad de cuidar a un huérfano lisiado y pobre, llamó a las autoridades locales. Cuando llegaron a la casa, una acalorada discusión surgió entre los oficiales, la señora y Watson, quien después de su encuentro con el tiburón podía vencer a cualquier casera. Los otros inquilinos salieron de sus habitaciones para disfrutar de la escena. Uno de ellos, un tal Capitán Huston, quien comandaba una goleta mercante de Chignecto, le ofreció un pasaje en su barco que partiría hacia Nueva Escocia.
Corría el año 1750. La actividad francesa en Beauséjour había impulsado a los británicos a construir el Fuerte Lawrence. Huston comerciaba con los franceses y los indios y, cuando el Fuerte Lawrence terminó de guarnecerse, con los ingleses. Trataba a Watson como si fuese su hijo y el muchacho se hizo popular. En 1755 lo nombraron comisario bajo el mando del Coronel Robert Monckton durante el sitio de Beauséjour y en 1758 ocupó el mismo cargo bajo las órdenes de Wolfe durante el sitio de Louisburg.
En 1759, Watson se mudó a Londres desde donde comerció con Norteamérica hasta el año 1774. En 1760, contrajo matrimonio con Helen Campbell, hija de un orfebre de Edimburgo. No tuvieron descendientes y la carrera de Watson fue cada vez mejor. En enero de 1772 se convirtió en miembro del primer comité de la Lloyd's• (Famosa organización británica de seguros marítimos de la que se deriva la actual Lloyd’s Register) y desempeñó un importante papel en su desarrollo. Visitó las Trece Colonias justo antes del estallido de la revolución. Mientras aparentemente viajaba por negocios, trabajó como agente del servicio secreto para el gobierno británico con el fin de interpretar opiniones locales acerca del futuro del país. Richard Montgomery escribió al General Schuyler, con una gran carga de ironía, en noviembre, después de la victoria en Montreal: “Le envío algunas cartas de ese noble y constante amigo de las Colonias, Brook Watson, cuyo celo sólo puede ser igualado por su sinceridad. Creo que las considerará lo suficientemente importantes como para entregárselas al General Washington y al Congreso.”(8)
En 1782, Watson fue nombrado Comisario General de Canadá bajo el mando de Sir Guy Carleton pero regresó a Inglaterra cuando se firmó la paz en 1783. Luego ocupó el cargo de Comisario General del ejército del Duque de York de 1793 a 1795 y Comisario General de las fuerzas armadas de Gran Bretaña de 1784 a 1807. Este último puesto fue creado especialmente para él por el gobierno. Fue en varias ocasiones Director del Banco de Inglaterra de 1784 a 1807 y vicegobernador de 1806 a 1807. Lord Liverpool lo describe como “uno de los hombres más honorables que se hayan conocido”. (9)
De 1784 a 1793 fue miembro del parlamento. Era admirador y partidario de William Pitt y aparece en una caricatura de Sayer (Fig. 12) dirigiéndose a la Cámara de los Comunes. No era el mejor de los oradores y lo describen como alguien que “con frecuencia interviene en los debates, muchas veces se contradice, se expresa de manera trivial incluso cuando podría haber hablado basándose en la práctica.” (10) Esta actitud también fue satirizada en el Rolliad:
“Modesto Watson, con su pierna de madera
Esa pierna, en la que arte tan magistral se devela,
Casi le sirve como su pierna verdadera
¡Oh!, si el monstruo, que tuvo como bocado
ese miembro sin suerte, su cabeza más noble hubiera encontrado,
Ni los mejores artesanos, ni la mejor madera
Lo hubiesen proveído con una cabeza tan buena.” (11)
Con la cabeza de madera o no, Watson se desempeñó como Alcalde de Londres de 1796 a 1797. El suyo fue un turbulento año de mandato durante el cual el país estuvo en guerra y en momentos de grandes disturbios. Las cosechas fueron malas, se necesitó dinero para comprar a los aliados, los impuestos aumentaron, la inconformidad se generalizó, los marineros de la Marina Real se amotinaron y el Banco de Inglaterra dejó de pagar en metálico. En una reunión de los funcionarios de la ciudad de Londres el 12 de abril de 1797, se presentó para su discusión una resolución que ‘investigase la causa real del terrible y alarmante estado de los asuntos públicos’. (12) Entonces surgió un debate indisciplinado en el cual los miembros de los gremios afirmaron que los ministros “habían sumergido al país en una guerra innecesaria e injusta.” (13) Watson decidió que no se podía discutir la resolución y dio por terminada la sesión levantando la maza, acción por la que fue posteriormente criticado.
Watson fue nombrado baronet• (título nobiliario inglés, intermedio entre barón y caballero) el 5 de diciembre de 1803. El blasón que solicitó hace numerosas referencias a su encuentro con el tiburón Su lema, Scuto Divino, significa “protegido por Dios”. En el vértice del diseño se encuentra Neptuno, Dios del Mar, blandiendo su tridente contra un tiburón; en la esquina izquierda superior, la pierna que perdió Watson. (Fig. 13) El documento que le confiere el escudo dice: “Él... solicitó el permiso de su Gracia para que le concediésemos tal Escudo de Armas el cual debe contener una alusión a un acontecimiento espantoso de su vida y ser un memorial de su gratitud al Cielo por salvarlo de manera tan extraordinaria en aquella ocasión.” (14) En la descripción del blasón que el Colegio de Heraldos entregó a Watson se lee: “Armiño sobre chevrón de azur angrelado, rodeado de tres vencejos de sable; punta con una llave de muesca dorada hacia arriba y una espada con pomo y empuñadura de oro; tres crecientes plateadas; un cantón con una pierna humana erecta y encarnada hasta poco más allá de la rodilla y como timbre, sobre una guirnalda de colores, emerge de las olas un Neptuno encarnado, coronado en oro con manto de sinople, la diestra elevada sostiene un tridente de oro como si fuese a asestar un golpe; la siniestra, un escudo de plata que repele a un tiburón en el acto de atrapar a su presa.” (15)
Brook Watson murió septuagenario el 2 de octubre de 1807 en East Sheen, condado de Surrey y se le dio sepultura en la iglesia parroquial de Mortlake. Su obituario decía: “Fue a lo largo de su vida, un súbdito constitucional y leal a su Rey y su País; un siervo fiel, celoso y diligente; un magistrado misericordioso, honrado y firme; un esposo cariñoso y tierno; un amigo amable y verdadero con sus parientes; constante con sus amistades; en la fe, un cristiano firme; en sus acciones, un hombre honesto y bondadoso.” (16)
Tales elogios no son poco comunes en los obituarios, aunque existen numerosas referencias a la nobleza y generosidad de Watson en las cartas de sus amigos y colegas. No obstante, son su energía, su optimismo y su coraje los que conceden distinción a su actitud ante la vida. En la primavera de 1755 en Nueva Escocia, pocos años después de su experiencia en La Habana, Watson notó que un rebaño de ganado perteneciente a su patrón, el Capitán Huston, había cruzado el río Missiguash y pastaba en territorio francés. Inmutable ante el potencial peligro, su discapacidad o el hecho de que el río se encontrase repleto de hielo flotante, Watson lo cruzó a nado, acorraló a las reses y las trajo de vuelta a través del agua helada hacia un lugar seguro. Posteriormente escribió en el revés de un grabado que representaba aquel suceso:
Si la mente enérgica no pudiera,
volar más allá de lo que marca la esfera
Su círculo sin límites a un lapso se reduciría
y la vida, del hombre digna no sería.
Arrebata de su osadía el Premio Celeste
¿y qué permanece para incitarlo a ser omnisciente?
Limita con la tumba su deseo ambicioso
¿y que lo incitará a ser bueno y valeroso?
