Heiner Müller’s Bildbeschreibung as a Negation of the Theatricality of the Text.
In the context of the discussion of the diversity of textual forms in the realm of writing for the stage and the problem of their immanent theatricality/staging potential one can hardly find a better example than Heiner Müller’s Bildbeschreibung (Description of a Picture), written in the mid-1980s. This condensed text of merely eight pages is actually composed of a single multiply-subordinate sentence, whose final full-stop resembles the curtain. Commas and semicolons separate consecutive phrases from one another, while a recurrent, echo-like conjunction “and” links them into a chain of successive descriptions of activities or states. Even more frequently the conjunction “or” occurs in the text, juxtaposing statements and conditional clauses as mutually exclusive alternatives. In accordance with the title, one stretched sentence that makes up Bildbeschreibung becomes an extensive description of a picture painted by a Bulgarian student, an enumeration of figures and objects that it features, an array of speculations on what they might look like and what relationships might link them; a long list of more or less probable conjectures about what had happened right before the depicted situation came to a halt and froze for eternity.
At the same time, however, one might read Bildbeschreibung as a description of a stage image inexorably cut out from a larger context of a represented reality by the frame of a proscenium arch. Under the dazzling sunlight emitted by spotlights, which the two enormous clouds coating a wire frame cannot shade, nobody will expect to see lifelike situations. Rather, the viewer browses in memory for the recognizable, typical stage situations and solutions. The suspicion that this image has not been crafted by a painter, but its display has been prepared by theatre people seems to be confirmed by a short author’s note at the end of the text. It suggests that Bildbeschreibung is a painting-over of Alkestis, packed with quotes from a No theatre play entitled Kumasaka, Canto XI of Homer’s Odyssey, Hitchcock’s The Birds and Shakespeare’s The Tempest. As we read further, “the text describes a landscape beyond death. The action goes any way you like, since the consequences are past, explosion of a memory in an extinct dramatic structure” . However, is it a strong enough proof for a claim that Müller’s work could as well be classified as a dramatic text?
One definitely cannot find in Bildbeschreibung such typical structural features of drama as a logically and discursively developing plot or a linear action that proceeds to a final denouement. There are no identifiable characters’ names nor their quoted lines. There is no dialogue as a medium of human interactions, which traditional drama usually tries to render. Likewise there are no stage directions to suggest the actors’ facial expression, gestures and other types of non-verbal communication. Moreover, Müller’s text has not even been subdivided into typographically distinct paragraphs, which could suggest that it has been written for a few different voices. One cannot identify even such ephemeral voices which would resound for a short while only to merge into a thematically homogeneous monologue delivered in unison by a chorus. It happens partly because, according to traditional poetics, the genre of picture description, which Müller chooses and stresses in the title, is characterized by a far-reaching subordination of the describing subject to the depicted object and the highest possible objectiveness of description. The author of Bildbeschreibung follows these rules in a nearly purist fashion. His text bears no trace of an individual point of view or an individual style. Even if in the final part the straightforward question appears: “who OR WHAT asks about the picture”, the manner of description suggests the existence of an impersonal site that registers perceived details, but definitely not a concrete, personal “I” expressing individual thoughts and emotions. As a result, Bildbeschreibung reads like an effect of work carried out by a machine that translates visual data into verbal signs, which mechanically and in a detached manner renders consecutive elements of the picture in words. Also the capitalized ICH (I) has little to do with the “I” of any of the fictional figures in the picture. It is neither a steadily emerging “I” of the implicit author of the description nor a real “I” of the author of Bildbeschreibung. Therefore in her analysis of Müller’s text Theresia Birkenhauer quite rightly points out that the textual “I” is entirely anonymous and impersonal, that it is only a textual site which follows the rules of a highly formalized literary genre. It is a pure effect of language as a sign system which functions in a particular way . To put it differently, this “I” is a final and retroactive product of a performative act of describing a picture, which Müller in an interview encapsulated in a metaphoric image of mouth which come to exist only as an effect of shouting. No doubt that whoever reads Bildbeschreibung without any preconception or prejudice, they must recognize and classify it as a short narrative text, or at best as a borderline case of poetic prose.
Contrary to that, Müller on numerous occasions stressed that Bildbeschreibung is a text destined for the stage. It would be much easier to disregard the auctorial intentions, if a text written deliberately as a provocation and directed against the existing rules of writing for the theatre remained exclusively a literary work, still waiting for its first stage rendition. However, Bildbeschreibung was commissioned by the organizers of Steirischer Herbst theatre festival in the Austrian city of Graz and premièred there, directed by Ginka Tscholakova. Obviously, neither the première nor all further productions of this text in Germany and abroad had anything to do with a traditional process of putting the text on stage, during which a literary text functions as a type of matrix that generates a closed and complete represented reality. They also had little to do with traditional theatre, in which the text “will not be recognized as a reality, but it will be used in order to report on reality” , as Müller wrote elsewhere, but approximately at the same time. However, the stage productions of Bildbeschreibung provide an incontrovertible proof of the author’s intentions, according to which the text was destined for a staging in contemporary theatre, although it was written deliberately against the dominant practices of this theatre. Perhaps for this reason the majority of experts on Müller’s oeuvre quite unanimously put forward the claim that Bildbeschreibung is definitely not a dramatic text, but most certainly it is not only destined for the theatre (according to the author’s intentions), but also it is a theatrical text. And, as it seems to me, this theatrical quality of the text has at least two aspects. Bildbeschreibung is not only a text which theatre can use freely, depending on the director’s desired ends and purposes, because in fact contemporary theatre can and does often employ all types of texts as equally valuable kinds of linguistic material. The theatre scholars also argue that Bildbeschreibung is a literary text which manifests immanent features typical of a theatrical text; features which can be identified, described and classified. Therefore the question arises: what actually determines the theatricality of Müller’s text, which in all respects exceeds the framework of the traditional dramatic paradigm?
Drawing a distinction between those elements of a text which count as specifically dramatic and those which could pertain only to the theatre as an autonomous and independent medium is not an easy task even after all the recent battles fought against the dominance of dramatic literature as a superior matrix that determines the shape and meaning of the objects and actions on stage. It suffices to remark that even such scholars as Hans-Thies Lehmann or Nikolaus Müller-Schöll , who otherwise argue for a sharp distinction between drama and texts for the stage as a basic modus operandi in the investigation into contemporary theatre, when analyzing Müller’s text still look for proofs of the presence of a structural features typical of a majority of dramatic works. Focusing on the consecutive changes of the described object, from the initial recognition of the type of the represented landscape to the final question about who or what is watching, Lehmann isolates in the text five constitutive and structuring units, while Müller-Schöll only three. Clearly, the identified number of segments closely resembles a traditional division into acts. Moreover, in both cases the principle of structuring remains similar: the delineated parts become consecutive stages of a process that we are witnessing; a process reminiscent of a solidly constructed dramatic action with respect to the linear succession of phases that end up in the final unravelling of the plot. Müller-Schöll even analogically pins down the nature of those successive stages and the relationships that link them by calling them the exposition, the conflict and the denouement.
There can be only one conclusion to all that. Although nobody formulates this thesis straightforwardly, most of the scholars analyzing Bildbeschreibung very clearly connect the definition of a dramatic text with the outward or even purely graphic distinctive features of drama as a literary genre. Simultaneously, they tacitly subsume the more internal properties of the text, such as the presence of a conflict and the resulting tension, the succession of situations which conditions the development of action and the accumulation of meaning, under the features typical of theatrical texts. By the same token they seem to posit that although a number of texts written for the stage today have ceased to be unanimously classifiable dramas, they still manifest a dramatic character, which seems to be the differentia specifica of theatrical texts. However, at this juncture a problem arises. A similar type of structuring with the view to identifying in a text a typically dramatic tension resulting from changes of various kinds can be carried out with reference to numerous literary and non-literary texts. On the one hand the dramatic quality understood in this fashion becomes a property of the thematic rather than a formal plane of the text. On the other hand it reflects the dynamics of the reception process typical of all linguistic texts because of the linear order of reading. All in all, the difference between a text intentionally destined for the stage or used by a theatre director in a performance and a strictly theatrical text disappears, because the structural properties of the text that the scholars identify in Bildbeschreibung cease to function as specific and distinguishing features of a text for theatre. The ultimate failure of these researchers’ efforts proves conclusively that attempts at capturing a specific quality of dramatic and theatrical texts does not lead too far, while handy analytical tools for reading the texts written in the last decades must be looked for on a different plane of theoretical reflection.
A comparison between different analyses of Bildbeschreibung as a text which despite its non-dramatic character has a theatrical quality leads to a unanimous conclusion that the basic criterion adopted by scholars is an interpretation of Müller’s text as a work which at the core manifests an intrinsic metatheatricality. Bildbescheribung focuses on theatre as an artistic medium and its basic properties, which researchers stress irrespective of the suggested way of identifying and interpreting this self-reflexive angle of the text. For some it resulted directly from Müller’s co-operation with Robert Wilson, the former trying to write a manifesto for the latter’s theatre of images . For others, on the contrary, the text delineates a concept of theatre which goes against the grain of the conviction that the stage should produce images of the world, faithfully copying its outward appearance . For yet others, such as the above-mentioned Lehmann, Bildbeschreibung takes up the theme of theatre in the etymological sense of the word – theatre as a theatron, a place at which a conflict between characters and the moral hierarchies they represent gives way to a dialectics of two basic types of gaze: the one that in the act of looking merely confirms the status quo, and the one that seeks a way out of the trap of eternal return of the same and strives to overcome the routine of perceptual acts as a recognition, in order to discern and take into account also that which has so far evaded perception . I do not intend to embark on a discussion with the various interpretations of Bildbeschreibung that I have referred to so far, because I do not treat the interpretation of this text as my basic task. From the point of view adopted in this paper the diversity of possibilities of reading Bildbeschreibung results not so much from the differences in fundamental assumptions made by each scholar, but rather from the variety of concepts of theatre that they adopt in their analyses. Let me illustrate this point with a single but telling example.
The most recent among the essays that I have pointed to so far, Theresia Birkenhauer’s article Bild – Beschreibung, published in 2005, reads like a radical polemic with the previous interpretations of Müller’s text. She gives the following reason for her critical stance: “When the text is read as a metatheatrical reflection, the way the composition of the text relates to the listener/spectator is usually not taken into consideration.” At the same time she puts forward her own interpretive suggestion: “This text is dramatic in so far as it not only thematizes the work of imagination, but also initiates it” . For this reason, according to Birkenhauer, Bildbeschreibung not only reflects on the processes of perception and reception going on in the theatre, but also it obliterates the aesthetic distance, because it contains the author’s project of a recipient’s experience. By deliberately hindering the constitution of the final version of the depicted image, it forces the spectators to discover on their own account “the gap in the process, the other in the return of the same” sought after in the text. Thus it suggests to the readers the second of the two types of gaze that compete with one another in Bildbeschreibung, as Lehmann argues in his paper. Birkenhauer’s article provides the most eloquent proof that in actual fact the interpreters do not argue over Müller’s text as such, but over the principle of conceptualization of theatre that each of them adopts and treats as a standard-setting touchstone. Consequently, the interpretations of Bildbeschreibung combine into a systematic spectrum of successive trends in contemporary theatre studies: from the director’s theatre, through discourse analysis to the performative turn. One element remains constant. It is the conviction that Müller’s text contains some immanent theatricality, because it thematizes the standard model of the theatre and reflects it on all levels of its basic structure.
It seems that equally valuable results could be achieved when one tried to describe Bildbeschreibung with recourse to the method of vectorization, developed quite recently by Patrice Pavis in his book Les Analyses des spectacles . This new approach to performance analysis came into being on the ruins of semiotics and its codified binary systems of meaning constitution. The semiotic tools of analysis proved inapplicable in the face of such theatrical phenomena as the Japanese Butoh or the postdramatic stage productions, which employ typical solutions of performance art and accentuate the materiality of the theatrical means of expression. These theatre forms manifested only vestiges of structure liable to a semiotic analysis and generating uniform meanings for the majority of spectators, who could hardly rely on the codes suggested by the performance itself and well-established theatrical conventions. Thus it would be difficult to conceptualize the processes of theatrical reception in terms of an accumulation of discreet units of meaning transmitted from the stage and combining into a single global sense. The new method of analysis required switching the focus from the performance towards the recipients as the co-producers of meanings; such meanings which often arise and remain on the level of idiosyncratic sensual impressions, evading any attempt at a neat rationalization. In this case the process of theatrical reception amounts to a series of repeated attempts at construing and comprehending meaning. These attempts are incessantly verified by the consecutive changes of the situation or its definition under the influence of incoming new or vaguely perceived but ultimately decisive elements. Looking for an adequate method of analysis, Pavis has merged the well-established Gestalttheorie, which echoes also in the concept of prototypes crucial for cognitive studies, with Freud’s technique of interpretation of dreams and his typology of mechanisms of condensation, substitution and displacement. In contemporary theatre, like in a dream, the spectators’ sensations and impressions evoked by the impulses coming from the stage accumulate in layers, modify, contradict or confirm one another. None of these recognitions acquires a status superior to others, and they all remain only vague suspicions or possibilities. The accretion of comprehensible meanings gives way to constant fluctuations and modifications of sense, conditioned by the constant emergence of new structuring elements which in turn function as vectors for new meanings. This scheme proves applicable also to the single, multiply-subordinate sentence that makes up Bildbeschreibung. It also initiates the process of constant reinterpretations of the depicted situations and a constant verification of conjectures. As if filling the entire performance this game with the spectator consists in creating ever new meanings and keeping them constantly in the state of potentiality.
The method of vectorization borrowed from Pavis does not seem any better or worse than the analytical tools used by other researchers. It provides yet another possible conceptualization of contemporary idea of theatre, whose spectators become more or less active recipients of images of the world, prepared for them to be recognized and ordered in a meaningful whole predetermined by the authors. “The picture an experimental arrangement, the roughness of the design an expression of the contempt for the guinea pigs the man, the woman, the bird” – Müller writes in Bildbeschreibung. One can easily guess that calling the depicted figures guinea pigs should serve for an interpreter as a distinct reference to Bertolt Brecht’s concept of theatre. Brecht belonged to those 20th-century artists who, relying on the authority of science, tried to use theatre as the most effective tool of collective learning that could propound the desired attitudes and outlooks on life. Also in numerous texts he advocated his idea of a stage as a site of social experiments. Müller all his life quite persistently argued against this concept of theatre, especially during the period of direct confrontation with Brecht’s doctrine in the latter half of the 1960s. In his Versuchsreihe he re-wrote in a unique manner three plays from the series of Lehrstücke. In Mauser (1970), written clearly with reference to the communist propaganda piece Die Massnahme, one can clearly discern how hard Müller tried to pull down the ideological scaffolding which usually gives meaning to the parabolic action and lends motivation to the characters’ decisions and actions. In Brecht’s play a chorus of four communist party members having carried out the task with which it was entrusted gives an account of death penalty inflicted on a Young Comrade, whose reckless undertakings could jeopardize the triumph of the revolution. The educational function of the play, which teaches the spectators the proper behaviour through exemplary situations, is additionally stressed by the convict himself, who agrees to death for the benefit of a higher cause. Therefore proper behaviour is the one which at a given moment enables to achieve the adopted, external aim with the slightest possible effort. In order to lay bare the fact that such an attitude leads swiftly to an instrumental use of values and human life, Müller takes up the topic of revolutionary struggle, but he returns twice to the problem of betrayal in one’s own ranks. Each time he somewhat differently motivates treason, and quotes various reactions of the traitors. Since he does not foredoom the course of the revolution, he also does not pass a unanimous judgment on the different attitudes that he presents.
In Die Massnahme, the ideological view of reality, which functions like a set of supporting concrete stilts in Le Corbusier’s architectural projects, can be easily seen through. However, “the disillusioned reflection on that which exists” , regarded by Müller as a basic task for his chosen artistic form, must lead to the elimination of those elements of a dramatic text which fulfill a similar, but indiscernible teleological function. They show the spectator a wide spectrum of possible attitudes and outlooks on life, implicitly suggesting their meanings and tacitly passing a judgment on them. Not without a reason the late-1960s period of confrontation with Brecht’s concept of theatre runs parallel with the phase in Müller’s work when due to the growing distrust of fable as a logical succession of interlinked events endowed with a specifiable meaning, the structure of his texts starts falling apart into a kaleidoscopic array of autonomous fragments set in various spaces and times. For the most part these fragments are in so far non-dramatic as they bear no individual or individualizing stamp. This is also the case with Bildbeschreibung. It is not the world and a specific world-view, sustained by a tight connection of all the component elements, that Müller strives to represent in this text. Indeed, one could call his undertaking “mimetic”, if we treat it as a mimesis of the form of the chosen literary genre, which at least from the times of Lessing onward has occupied the pole exactly opposite the dramatic text. Sticking to the structural format of description, Müller gives a definite direction and aim to the process that goes on in Bildbeschreibung, but he steers clear of expressing any judgment on external reality. Moreover, he does not bring this superior task to a successful end. He only faces the spectator with a panorama of possible situations and their possible meanings. As a result, Müller’s text becomes a nearly perfect negative of the basic model of drama. It contains all of its component parts, but it negates them and turns them inside out. This holds good not only for the structure of the text, but also for the traditional process of reception that it initiates, surreptitiously disrupting the workings of the mechanism of projection and identification.
At first glance Bildbeschreibung thematizes the process of reception typical of the texts written as subjective dramas. This aspect of Müller’s work has been stressed by many scholars, who point to the moment in the text when the question crops up whether the viewer only describes the picture, and thus resembles an old-day camera obscura which passively and objectively registers its outward appearance, or whether s/he exerts a formative impact on the description, and therefore in the very act of perception and naming co-creates that which seems to be painted on the canvas. This type of reading necessarily brings to mind Strindberg’s late plays, particularly To Damascus which lay at the root of the entire subjective dramaturgy. A thorough analysis of this text brings to light the fact that the formal solutions employed to build the represented reality in this play mime the basic elements of the typical process of perception. The protagonist, significantly called The Unknown, exists not so much as a concrete character, but primarily as a superior figure that embraces the entire action. He is the sum-total of all the events, because quite obviously most of the characters in the play do not live independently, but function only as embodiments of various aspects of his personality. Therefore The Unknown much more obviously than a typical dramatic character turns out to be the product of spectators themselves, the effect of their perceptiveness, the ability to find connections within the framework of the represented reality, their skillfulness in linking facts, and verifying and accumulating the successively incoming information. The capitalized I (ICH) in Bildbeschreibung resembles closely The Unknown, since it also seems to come into being on the strength of the recipients decision. It exists due to their ability to draw on the material provided by the author and the links that he suggested. “I the frozen storm” – reads the last sentence of Müller’s text. However, is it not another misleading analogy? Is it not a negative of a well-known dramatic structure?
Birkenhauer is fully right to point out that in Bildbeschreibung the dialectics of the image and the recipient plays a less significant role than the relationship between the image and the description, the act of perception and the act of verbalization. If one assumes that it is not an individual perceiving “I” that creates the image, but a highly formalized process of producing a description, it turns out that in this text one cannot identify a specific thinking and perceiving subject, but merely an impersonal textual site. This leads to further consequences. Just like the very form of description brings into being the describing “I”, that is, a position from which the description is carried out, the perceptual perspective typical of the dominant model of theatre creates a position from which the stage events are watched. In other words, it creates the spectator. To put it differently, it is not The Unknown who becomes an invariant creation of every spectator of Strindberg’s To Damascus, but every spectator comes to occupy the same vantage point that this text projects, and therefore becomes its sum-total, an end-product of The Unknown. In this interpretational context the line “I the frozen storm” quoted from Bildbeschreibung does not refer to the latent potential of the spectators’ imagination in order to open up a space for a multitude of their individual stagings. Rather it quite straightforwardly points to the lifelessness of the thematized model of theatre which, irrespective of the spectators’ individual abilities and needs, lures them into a trap of a single point of view, into a predetermined, institutionally secured, frozen “I”.
I am convinced that the thematization of the rudiments of the theatrical medium is not the aim of Bildbeschreibung but only a means to another aim. Müller formulated his objective on another occasion in the following manner: “The formulation of a certain state of affairs is already a way of overcoming this state of affairs” . However, a description can serve this purpose only when it is carried out with extreme violence, without indulging in illusions. For this reason Müller presented the dominant model of theatre as a negative, and thus he pointed to two of its aspects which usually slip our attention. Firstly, he brought to light the ideological function of every network of connections between stage events. Secondly, and much more importantly in the context of Bildbeschreibung as a text written for theatre, he disclosed the illusory freedom of the spectator, who turns out to be only a cog in the theatrical institution, understood as a type of a laboratory. By the same token he not only described the dominant model of theatre, but also indicated its sore points as the areas that call for changes. And perhaps he also managed to identify these places at which the conceptualization of new theatrical forms should originate, quite independently of the old model.

Mesmo mais freqüentemente a conjunção “ou” aparece no texto, justapondo afirmações e cláusulas condicionais como mutuamente exclusivas alternativas. De acordo com o título, uma frase enfatizada que dá forma a Bildbeschreibung se torna uma descrição extensa de uma imagem pintada por um estudante búlgaro, uma sucessão de figuras e objetos que ele retrata, um conjunto de especulações sobre que aparência eles podem ter e quais as relações que podem ligá-los; uma longa lista de mais ou menos prováveis conjecturas sobre o que pode ter acontecido logo antes da situação descrita terminou e se congelou para sempre.
Ao mesmo tempo, entretanto, se poderia ler Bildbeschreibung como uma descrição de uma imagem de palco tirada de um contexto maior de uma realidade representada pela moldura do arco de um proscênio. Sob a cegante luz do sol emitida pelos holofotes, os quais duas enormes nuvens cobrindo uma estrutura de arame não podem sombrear, ninguém esperaria ver situações verídicas. Em vez disso, o espectador busca em sua memória por típicas situações e soluções de palco reconhecíveis. A suspeita que essa imagem não tenha sido criada por um pintor, mas tenha sido preparada por gente de teatro parece ser confirmada por uma pequena nota do autor no final do texto. Ela sugere que Bildschreibung é uma re-pintura de Alkestis, embrulhada com citações de uma peça de teatro Nô chamada Kumasaka, o Canto XI da Odisséia de Homero, Os Pássaros de Hitchcock e A Tempestade de Shakespeare. Se lermos mais adiante, “o texto descreve uma paisagem além da morte. A ação se desenrola da maneira que você quiser, desde que as conseqüências são passadas, explosão de uma memória de uma extinta estrutura dramática” . Entretanto, existe uma prova suficientemente forte para a afirmação que o trabalho de Müller poderia também ser classificado como um texto dramático?
Não se pode definitivamente encontrar em Bildsbeschreibung tais típicas estruturas do drama como logicamente e discursivamente se desenvolve uma trama ou uma ação linear que prossiga para uma solução final. Não há nomes de personagens identificáveis nem suas linhas de dialogo são citadas. Não há diálogo como meio de interações humanas, as quais o drama tradicional geralmente tenta delinear. Da mesma forma não há direções de palco para sugerir a expressão facial, gestos e outros tipos de comunicação não verbal dos atores. Entretanto, o texto de Muller não tem nem sido subdividido em parágrafos tipograficamente distintos, o que poderia sugerir que ele tenha sido escrito para algumas poucas vozes diferentes. Não se pode identificar nem mesmo tais vozes efêmeras que ressoariam por um breve intervalo apenas para se fundirem em um monólogo tematicamente homogêneo pronunciado em uníssono por um coro. Isso acontece parcialmente porque, de acordo com a poética tradicional, o gênero de descrição de uma figura, que Muller escolhe e enfatiza no titulo, é caracterizado por uma subordinação de longo alcance do sujeito que descreve o objeto em questão e a mais alta objetividade possível da descrição. O autor de Bildsbeschreibung segue essas regras em uma forma quase purista. Seu texto não carrega traços de um ponto de vista individual ou de um estilo individual. Mesmo se na parte final a questão direta apareça: “quem OU O QUE pergunta sobre a figura”, o tipo de descrição sugere a existência de um lugar impessoal que registra detalhes percebidos, mas definitivamente não um pessoal, concreto, “EU” expressando pensamentos em emoções pessoais. Como resultado, Bildbeschreibung lido como efeito de uma maquina que traduz dados visuais em signos verbais, que mecanicamente e de uma maneira separada mostra elementos consecutivos da figura em palavras. Também o EU em letras maiúsculas tem pouco a ver com o “EU” de qualquer das figuras ficcionais. Não é nem um “EU” constantemente aparecendo do autor implícito da descrição nem um “EU” real do autor de Bildbeschreibung. Portanto em sua analise do texto de Muller Theresia Birkenhauer observa corretamente que o “EU” textual é inteiramente anônimo e impessoal, que ele é apenas um local textual que segue as regras de um gênero literário altamente formalizado. é um puro efeito de linguagem como sistema de signos que funciona de uma maneira particular . Para colocar isso de forma diferente, este “EU” é um produto final e retroativo do ato performático de descrever uma imagem, que Muller em uma entrevista envolveu em uma imagem metafórica de boca que vem a existir apenas como um efeito de gritar. Sem dúvida que qualquer pessoa que ler Bildbeschreibung sem nenhuma idéia preconcebida ou preconceito, deve reconhecê-lo e classificá-lo como um pequeno texto narrativo, ou melhor, como um caso marginal de prosa poética.
Contrariamente a isso, Muller em muitas ocasiões enfatizou que Bildbeschreibung é um texto destinado para o palco. Seria muito mais fácil não dar importância às intenções autorais, se um texto escrito deliberadamente como uma provocação e dirigido contra mas regras existentes de como escrever para o teatro permanecesse exclusivamente como um trabalho literário, esperando ainda pela sua primeira versão para o palco. Entretanto, Bidbeschreibung foi selecionado pelos organizadores do festival do Teatro Steirischer Herbst na cidade austríaca de Graz e estreado lá, dirigido por Ginka Tscholakova. Obviamente,k nem a estréia nem as produções posteriores deste texto na Alemanha e no exterior tiveram qualquer coisa a ver com o processo tradicional de colocar um texto no palco, durante o qual um texto literário funciona como um tipo de modelo que gera uma realidade representada fechada e completa. Eles também têm pouco a ver com o teatro tradicional, no qual o texto “não será reconhecido como uma realidade, mas será utilizado para descrever a realidade” , como Muller escreve em outro lugar, mas aproximadamente ao mesmo tempo. Entretanto, as produções teatrais de Bildbeschreibung mostram uma prova inquestionável das intenções do autor, de acordo com que o texto foi destinado para uma encenação no teatro contemporâneo, embora tenha sido escrito deliberadamente contra a prática dominante deste teatro. Talvez por esta razão a maioria dos especialistas na obra de Muller unanimemente aponte que Bildbeschreibung não é definitivamente um texto dramático, mas mais certamente não é apenas destinado para o teatro (de acordo com as intenções do autor), mas como também é um texto teatral. E, como me parece, essa qualidade teatral do texto tem pelo menos dois aspectos. Bildbeschreibung é não apenas um texto que o teatro pode usar livremente, dependendo dos fins e propósitos desejados pelo diretor, porque de fato o teatro contemporâneo pode e freqüentemente emprega todos os tipos de texto como igualmente valiosos tipos de material lingüístico. Os estudiosos de teatro também argumentam que Bildbeschreibung é um texto literário que manifesta características típicas de um texto teatral; características que podem ser identificadas, descritas e classificadas. Portanto aprece a questão: o que realmente determina a teatralidade do texto de Muller que em todos os aspectos excede a forma do paradigma dramático tradicional?
Traçando uma distinção entre aqueles elementos de um texto que contam como especificamente dramáticos e aqueles que podem pertencer apenas ao teatro como um meio independente e autônomo não é uma tarefa fácil mesmo depois de todas as batalhas recentes contra a dominância da literatura dramática como um modelo superior que determina a forma e o significado dos objetos e ações no palco. É suficiente notar que mesmo estudiosos como Hans-Thies Lehmann ou Nikolaus Muller-Schöll , que de outra forma questionam uma distinção acentuada entre drama e textos para o palco como um modus operandi na investigação do teatro contemporâneo, quando analisam o texto de Muller ainda procuram provas da presença de características estruturais típicas da maioria dos textos dramáticos. Enfocando as mudanças consecutivas do objeto descrito, desde o reconhecimento inicial do tipo de paisagem representada até a questão final sobre quem ou o que está observando, Lehmann isola no texto cinco unidades constituintes e estruturais, enquanto Muller-Schöll apenas três. Claramente, o numero identificado de segmentos lembra precisamente uma divisão tradicional em atos. Entretanto, em ambos os casos o principio de estruturação permanece similar: as partes delineadas se tornam estágios consecutivos de um processo que estamos testemunhando; um processo que lembra uma ação dramática solidamente construída com respeito à sucessão linear de fases que terminam no desenvolvimento final do enredo. Muller-Schöll mesmo analogicamente aponta a natureza dos estágios sucessivos e os relacionamentos que os ligam nomeando-os a exposição, o conflito e a solução.
Pode haver apenas uma conclusão para isso tudo. Embora ninguém formule essa tese diretamente, a maioria dos estudiosos que analisam Bildbeschreibung muito claramente liga a definição de um texto dramático com as exteriores ou mesmo puramente gráficas características do drama como um gênero literário. Simultaneamente, eles classificam tacitamente as propriedades mais internas do texto, tais como a presença de um conflito e a tensão resultante, a sucessão de situações que condicionam o desenvolvimento da ação e a acumulação de significados, sob as características típicas dos textos teatrais. Da mesma forma eles parecem postular que embora um certo número de textos escritos para o palco atualmente tem deixado de ser unanimemente dramas classificáveis, eles ainda manifestam uma característica dramática, que parece ser a diferentia specifica dos textos teatrais. Entretanto, neste ponto um problema aprece. Um meio similar de estruturar com vistas a identificar em um texto uma tensão tipicamente dramática resultante de mudanças de vários tipos pode ser levado a efeito com referência a numerosos textos literários e não literários. Por um lado a qualidade dramática compreendida desta forma se torna uma propriedade da temática mais que do plano formal do texto. Por outro lado isso reflete a dinâmica do processo de recepção típica de todos os textos lingüísticos por causa da ordem linear da leitura. Em resumo, a diferença entre um texto intencionalmente destinado para o palco ou usado por um diretor de teatro em uma apresentação e um texto estritamente teatral desaparece, porque as propriedades estruturais do texto que os estudiosos identificam em Bildbeschreibung cessam de funcionar como características especificas e distintivas de um texto para teatro. O fracasso final dos esforços desses pesquisadores prova conclusivamente que tentativas de capturar uma qualidade especifica dos textos dramáticos e teatrais não vão muito longe, enquanto ferramentas analíticas à mão para ler os textos escritos nas ultimas décadas devem ser procuradas em um plano diferente de reflexão teórica.
Uma comparação entre diferentes análises de Bildbeschreibung como um texto que a despeito de sua característica não-dramática tem uma qualidade teatral que leva a uma conclusão unânime que o critério básico adotado por estudiosos é uma interpretação do texto de Muller como um trabalho que na sua essência manifesta uma metateatralidade intrínseca. Bildbeschreibung se focaliza no teatro como uma forma artística e em suas propriedades básicas, que pesquisadores enfatizam sem restrições à maneira sugerida de identificar e interpretar este ângulo auto-reflexivo do texto. Para alguns isso resulta diretamente da cooperação de Muller com Robert Wilson, o primeiro tentando escrever um manifesto para o teatro de imagens do segundo . Para outros, ao contrário, o texto delineia um conceito de teatro que vai contra a essência da convicção de que o palco deveria produzir imagens do mundo, fielmente copiando sua aparência exterior . Para outros ainda, tais como o acima mencionado Lehmann, Bildbeschreibung toma o tema do teatro no sentido etimológico da palavra – teatro como theatron, um lugar onde um conflito entre personagens e as hierarquias morais que eles representam dão lugar a uma dialética de dois tipos básicos de olhar: aquele que no ato de olhar meramente confirma o status quo, e aquele que procura um meio de sair da armadilha do eterno retorno do mesmo e tenta ultrapassar a rotina dos atos perceptuais como um reconhecimento, para discernir e tomar em conta também aquilo que tem até agora escapado a percepção . Eu não pretendo embarcar em uma discussão sobre as várias interpretações de Bildbeschreibung às quais me referi até agora, porque eu não trato a interpretação deste texto como minha tarefa básica. Do ponto de vista adotado neste trabalho a diversidade de possibilidades de ler Bilbeschreibung resulta não tanto das diferenças nas suposições fundamentais feitas por cada estudioso, mas da variedade de conceitos de teatro que eles adotam em suas análises. Deixe-me ilustrar este ponto com um simples mas esclarecedor exemplo.
O mais recente entre os ensaios que eu apontei até agora, o artigo de Theresia Birkenhauer Bild – Beschreibung, publicado em 2005, lido como uma polemica radical com as prévias interpretações do texto de Müller. Ela dá as seguintes razões para sua posição crítica: “Quando o texto é lido como uma reflexão metateatral, a maneira que a composição do texto se relaciona com o ouvinte/espectador não é geralmente tomada em consideração”. Ao mesmo tempo ela aponta sua própria sugestão interpretativa: “Este texto é dramático na medida que ele não só tematiza o trabalho da imaginação, mas também o inicia”. Por esta razão, de acordo com Birkenhauer, Bildbeschreibung não só reflete os processos de percepção e recepção acontecendo no teatro, mas também elimina a distância estética, porque contém o projeto do autor da experiência de um receptor. Por deliberadamente impedir a constituição da versão final da imagem representada, isso força os espectadores a descobrir por eles mesmos “a falha no processo, o outro na volta do mesmo” procurado no texto. Assim isso sugere aos leitores o segundo dos dois tipos de olhar que competem um com o outro em Bilbeschreibung, como Lehmann argumenta em seu trabalho. O artigo de Birkenhauer traz a mais eloqüente prova de que na realidade os interpretes não questionam o texto de Müller como tal, mas o princípio de conceitualização do teatro que cada um deles adota e trata como uma pedra de toque que estabelece um padrão. Conseqüentemente, as interpretações de Bildbeschreibung se combinam em um espectro sistemático de orientações no9s estudos contemporâneos do teatro: do teatro do diretor, através da análise do discurso dos atos performáticos. Um elemento permanece constante. É a convicção de que o texto de Müller contém alguma teatralidade imanente, porque tematiza o modelo padrão do teatro e o reflete em todos os níveis de sua estrutura básica.
Parece que resultados igualmente valiosos podem ser alcançados quando se tenta descrever Bilbeschreibung recorrendo ao método de orientação, desenvolvido recentemente por Patrice Pavis no seu livro Lês Analyses dês spectacles . Este novo tipo de análise da performance entrou em vigor nas ruínas da semiótica e seu sistema binário de constituição de significados. As ferramentas de análise semiótica se provaram inaplicáveis em face de tais fenômenos teatrais como o Butoh japonês e as produções teatrais pós-dramáticas, que empregam soluções típicas da arte da performance e acentuam a materialidade das formas de expressão do teatro. Essas formas de teatro manifestam apenas vestígios de estrutura responsáveis por uma análise semiótica e geram significados uniformes para a maioria dos espectadores, que dificilmente poderiam se apoiar nos códigos sugeridos pela própria performance e pelas convenções teatrais estabelecidas. Assim seria difícil conceitualizar a recepção teatral em termos de uma acumulação de unidades discretas de significado transmitidas do palco e combinadas em um único sentido global. O novo método de análise requer mudar o foco da performance em direção ao receptor como co-produtor de significados; tais significados que freqüentemente aparecem e permanecem no nível de impressões sensuais idiossincráticas, escapando a qualquer tentativa de uma racionalização direta. Neste caso o processo de recepção teatral eleva-se a uma série de tentativas repetidas de construir e compreender o significado. Estas tentativas são incessantemente verificadas pelas mudanças consecutivas da situação ou sua definição sob a influência de elementos novos ou vagamente percebidos mas realmente decisivos. Procurando um método adequado de análise, Pavis mergulhou na bem estabelecida Teoria Gestáltica, que ecoa também no conceito de protótipos cruciais para estudos cognitivos, com a técnica de Freud de interpretação de sonhos e sua tipologia dos mecanismos de condensação, substituição e deslocamento. No teatro contemporâneo, como em um sonho, as sensações e impressões dos espectadores evocadas por impulsos vindos do palco se acumulam em camadas, modificam, contradizem ou confirmam um ao outro. Nenhuma dessas considerações adquire um status superior às outras, e todas elas permanecem apenas vagas suspeitas ou possibilidades. O acréscimo de significados compreensíveis dá lugar a constantes flutuações e modificações de sentido, condicionadas pelo constante aparecimento de novos elementos estruturais que por sua vez funcionam como direções para novos significados. Este esquema se prova aplicável também para a única, multiplamente subordinada sentença que forma Bildbeschreibung. Isso também inicia o processo de constantes reinterpretações das situações descritas e uma constante verificação de conjecturas. Ao preencher a performance inteira este jogo com o espectador consiste em criar sempre novos significados e mantê-los constantes no estado de potencialidade.
O método de direcionamento emprestado de Pavis não parece melhor ou pior que as ferramentas analíticas usadas por outros pesquisadores. Ele fornece ainda outra possível conceitualização da idéia contemporânea de teatro, cujos espectadores se tornam mais ou menos receptores ativos de imagens do mundo, preparadas para eles para serem reconhecidas e ordenadas em um conteúdo significativo predeterminado pelos autores. “A imagem como um arranjo experimental, a dureza do desenho como expressão para o desprezo torna cobaias o homem, a mulher, o pássaro” – Müller escreve em Bildbeschreibung. Pode-se facilmente adivinhar que chamar as figuras representadas de cobaias deveria servir para um interprete como uma referencia distinta ao conceito de teatro de Bertolt Brecht. Brecht pertencia aos artistas do século XX que, se apoiando na autoridade da ciência, tentaram não usar o teatro como a mais efetiva ferramenta de aprendizado coletivo que poderia propor as atitudes e aparências desejadas na vida. Também em numerosos textos ele defendeu sua idéia do palco como um local para experimentos sociais. Müller em toda sua vida persistentemente argumentou contra este conceito de teatro, especialmente durante o período de confrontação direta com a doutrina de Brecht na segunda metade dos anos 60. Em seu Versuchsreihe ele reescreveu em uma forma única três peças da série de Lehrstücke. Em Mauser (1970), escrita claramente com referencia à peça de propaganda comunista Die Massnahme, se pode claramente entender quão dificilmente Müller tentou tirar a estrutura ideológica que geralmente dá significado à ação em curso e empresta motivação às decisões e ações dos personagens. Na peça de Brecht um coro de quatro membros do partido comunista tendo cumprido a tarefa de que estavam encarregados dão conta de uma pena de morte aplicada em um jovem camarada, cujas ações corajosas poderiam prejudicar o triunfo da revolução. A função educativa da peça, que ensina aos espectadores o comportamento adequado através de situações exemplares, é adicionalmente enfatizado pelo próprio prisioneiro, que concorda com a morte para favorecer uma causa mais alta. Portanto o comportamento adequado é aquele que em um momento dado permite alcançar a meta adotada, externa, com o menor esforço possível. Para tornar evidente o fato de que tal atitude leva suavemente para um uso instrumental de vida e valores humanos. Müller toma o tópico dos esforços revolucionários, mas ele volta duas vezes ao problema da traição nas próprias fileiras. A cada vez ele motiva de forma diferente a traição, e cita várias reações dos traidores. Desde que ele não predetermina o curso da revolução, ele também não passa um julgamento único nas diferentes atitudes que ele apresenta.
Em Die Massnahme, a visão ideológica da realidade, que funciona como pilares de concreto que suportam os projetos arquitetônicos de Le Corbusier, pode ser facilmente compreendida. Entretanto, “a reflexão desiludida daquilo que existe” , olhada por Müller como uma tarefa básica para sua forma artística escolhida, deve levar à eliminação dos elementos de um texto dramático que preenchem uma similar mas não reconhecível função teleológica. Eles mostram ao espectador um vasto espectro de atitudes e pontos de vista possíveis na vida, sugerindo implicitamente seus significados e tacitamente passando um julgamento sobre eles. Não sem razão o período de confrontação com o conceito de teatro de Brecht do final dos anos 60 corre paralelo com a fase do trabalho de Muller devida à crescente desconfiança da fábula como,uma sucessão lógica de eventos interligados dotados de um significado especifico, a estrutura de seus textos começa a cair por terra em um emaranhado de fragmentos caleidoscópicos autônomos colocados em vários espaços e tempos. Na maior parte estes fragmentos não são tão não dramáticos já que eles não carregam traços individuais ou individualizantes. Isso é também o caso de Bildbeschreibung. Esse não é o mundo nem uma visão de mundo específica, sustentada por uma estreita conexão com todos os elementos componentes, que Muller tentou representar nesse texto. De fato, poder-se-ia chamar essa tarefa “mimética”, se a tratarmos como uma mimese da forma de gênero literário escolhida, que pelo menos desde os tempos de Lessing tem ocupado o pólo exatamente oposto ao texto dramático. Prendendo-se à forma estrutural de descrição, Muller dá uma definição e uma meta definidas para o processo que continua em Bildbeschreibung, mas ele não expressa qualquer julgamento com relação à realidade exterior. Entretanto, ele não traz essa tarefa superior para um fim bem sucedido. Ele apenas encara o espectador com um panorama de situações possíveis e seus possíveis significados. Como resultado, o texto de Muller se torna um quase perfeito negativo do modelo básico do drama. Ele contém todas as partes componentes, mas as nega e as vira de cabeça para baixo. Isso permanece bom não apenas para a estrutura do texto, mas também para o processo tradicional de recepção que ele inicia, secretamente rompendo as estruturas do mecanismo do processo de projeção e identificação.
À primeira vista Bildbeschreibung tem como tema o processo de recepção típico dos textos escritos como dramas subjetivos. Este aspecto do trabalho de Muller tem sido enfatizado por muitos estudiosos, que apontam para o momento do texto no qual a questão de se o observador apenas descreve a figura aparece, e assim lembra uma velha câmara escura que passivamente e objetivamente registra sua aparência externa, ou se ele exerce um impacto formativo na descrição, e que,portanto, no próprio ato de perceber e designar ajuda a criar aquilo que parece estar pintado na tela. Este tipo de leitura traz necessariamente à mente as últimas peças de Strindberg, particularmente Para Damasco que se situa na raiz de toda a dramaturgia subjetiva. Uma análise completa deste texto traz à luz o fato de que as soluções formais empregadas para construir a realidade representada nesta peça imita os elementos básicos do processo típico de percepção. O protagonista, chamado significativamente de O Desconhecido, existe não tanto como um personagem concreto, mas principalmente como uma figura superior que envolve toda a ação. Ele é a soma total de todos os eventos, porque obviamente a maioria dos personagens da peça não vive independentemente, mas funciona apenas como a incorporação de vários aspectos da personalidade dele. Portanto O Desconhecido muito mais obviamente que um típico personagem dramático se torna o produto dos próprios espectadores, o efeito de sus percepções, a habilidade de encontrar conexões dentro da estrutura da realidade representada, sua habilidade de ligar fatos, e verificar e acumular as informações que entram sucessivamente. O EU em letras maiúsculas em Bildbeschreibung lembra bem de perto O Desconhecido, já que também parece aparecer pela força da decisão dos receptores. Ele existe devido à sua habilidade de se aproximar do material dado pelo autor e das ligações que ele sugere. “Eu a tempestade congelada” – se lê na última sentença do texto de Muller. Entretanto, isso não é outra analogia ilusória? Não é uma negação de uma bem conhecida estrutura dramática?
Birkenhauer está completamente certa em apontar que em Bilbeschreibung a dialética da imagem e o receptor têm um papel menos significativo que a relação entre a imagem e a descrição, o ato de percepção e o ato de verbalização. Se assumirmos que não é um “EU” individual que cria a imagem, ,mas um altamente formalizado processo de produzir uma descrição, descobrimos que neste texto não se pode identificar um sujeito especificamente pensante e perceptivo, mas apenas um local textual impessoal. Isso leva a conseqüências posteriores. Assim como a própria forma de descrição faz existir o “EU” descritor, isto é, uma posição da qual a descrição é feita, a perspectiva perceptual típica do modelo dominante de teatro cria uma posição da qual os eventos do palco são observados. Em outras palavras, isso cria o espectador. Colocando isso de forma diferente, não é O Desconhecido quem se torna uma criação invariável de cada espectador da peça de Strindberg Para Damasco, mas cada espectador ocupa o mesmo ponto favorável que o texto projeta, e portanto se torna sua soma total, um produto final de O Desconhecido. Neste contexto interpretativo a linha “Eu a tempestade congelada” citada de Bildbeschreibung não se refere ao potencial latente de imaginação dos espectadores para abrir um espaço para uma multidão de suas encenações individuais. Em vez disso aponta claramente para a falta de vida do modelo temático do teatro que, sem respeitar as habilidades e necessidades individuais dos espectadores, os atrai para uma armadilha de um único ponto de vista, em um predeterminado e institucionalmente assegurado, congelado “Eu”.
Estou convencida que a tematização dos rudimentos do meio teatral não é o objetivo de Bildbeschreibung mas apenas um meio para outro objetivo. Muller formulou seu objetivo em outra ocasião da seguinte maneira: “A formulação de um certo estado de coisas já é um caminho para ultrapassar esse estado de coisas” Entretanto, uma descrição pode servir esse propósito apenas quando é levada a efeito com extrema violência, sem recorrer a ilusões. Por esta razão Muller apresentou o modelo dominante de teatro como negativo, e assim ele apontou para dois de seus aspectos que geralmente escapam à nossa atenção. Primeiramente, ele trouxe à luz a função ideológica de cada rede de conexões entre eventos do palco. Em segundo lugar, e com muito mais importância no contexto de Bildbeschreibung como um texto escrito para o teatro, ele mostrou a liberdade ilusória do espectador, que se torna apenas uma parte secundária na instituição do teatro, compreendido como um tipo de laboratório. Heiner Müller’s Anatomy Titus Fall of Rome and the Historical Dimension of the Theatricality of the Text for the Stage.
Anatomie Titus Fall of Rome (Anatomy of Titus Fall of Rome, 1984) , when set against the background of Heiner Müller’s other late texts written at the turn of the 1980s, might seem surprisingly traditional. Texts from the same period, such as Hamletmaschine (1977), Despoiled Shore (1981) or Bildbeschreibung (1984), are visibly deprived of the typical features of a text for the stage, such as dialogues which propel a logically developing action, the anthropomorphic figures with whom the spectators could emphatically identify or an inscribed project of the outward appearance of the stage world, inscribed in the stage directions. Consequently, these texts already at first glance evade any clear-cut classification as dramatic or consequently stageable. Against their background Müller’s re-writing of Shakespeare’s tragedy Titus Andronicus gives an impression of a return to more manifestly theatrical idea of the text. Anatomie Titus very faithfully renders the plot of the original, bringing out all the complexities of the bloody revenge story of the fall of a noble Roman house of Andronicus in times of decay of the Roman Empire under the siege of barbaric Goths. The dialogic exchanges written by Müller read like an all-too-verbatim translation of Shakespeare’s tragedy, rendered in crudely rhythmical blank verse. Supplemented with quite contemporary poetic imagery, the original plot of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus becomes a historiosophic model which illustrates the nature of the processes of historical development and the dialectic struggle of the opposing social, national and civilisational forces. In Anatomie Titus the struggle between the Goths and the Romans becomes, according to Müller’s intentions, a very current parable about the “intrusion of the third world upon the first one” . Müller explicitly highlights these junctures in the play’s action in which the barbaric Goths learn from the Romans how to reach for ideological argumentation to justify human sacrifices, while the Romans appropriate the methods of crude and remorseless killing, although at the beginning they boast that they come from a city which “values paper more than stone” and gives priority to logical reasoning over physical violence. Undoubtedly, investigating the political dimension of Anatomie Titus is a task worth pursuing, especially that the text touches upon problems which have gained validity in the context of the recent debate about the possible shape and function of today’s engaged drama and theatre. However, I would like to omit the discussion of the possible interpretations of Müller’s appropriation of Shakespeare’s original and the nature and extent of his contribution to the postcolonial critique of the globalizing Western culture. I am only interested in demonstrating that in spite of the seemingly traditional shape of his text, which on the surface seems to stick to the format of typical drama, Müller actually writes against the grain of the dominant conventions of writing for the stage, subverting the established relationship between the text and its stage production.
The structure of Anatomie Titus is by no means as traditional as it might seem at first glance. True, Müller retains the entire fable and the typography of drama, which is usually regarded as the proof of a text’s stagebility. But apart from a traditional division into the primary text of the dialogue and the secondary text of very scant stage directions, he introduces one more element into the text’s layout. The dialogic passages are time and again cut through by larger and shorter paragraphs of poetic prose, written in the upper case as Müller’s commentary to the play’s main action. This commentary fulfils numerous functions which are not restricted to giving an epic account of the events in the play and providing missing links between the dialogic parts. The commentary, clearly written from a perspective which is external to the main course of events, does not at all match the twists and turns of the plot. The highly metaphoric language of the commentary often requires of the reader an effort to recuperate the connections and make sense of the seemingly chaotic rubble of poetic images. Apart from that, the commentary contextualizes the ancient plot in the present times, because many of its passages are constructed as a montage of poetic images which put side by side the Roman army and the fascist-like fight squads, the ancient inns and quite modern pubs, roman arenas and football stadiums, as well as messengers alongside television news bulletins. Therefore, even if one recalls Brecht’s metatheatrical experiments, it is clear that Müller puts upside down the typical relationship between the authorial commentary and the dialogical rendition of the fable. It is the former that gains prominence over the latter, working as the prism through which the events in the play are watched. Thus the introduction of the commentary does not serve the purpose of distancing the spectators in the epic mode and imposing on them the role of analysts of the fable as a suggested model of historical mechanisms. On the contrary, Müller’s plot instantiates and makes concrete the abstract historiosophic processes about which the commentary speaks.
Surprisingly enough, Müller writes in an afterword to his text – which functions also as the text’s integral part – that “the commentary as a way of introducing the author’s reality to the play is a drama and not a description, and it should not be attributed to a single narrator” . The commentary does not have the typically metatheatrical character and it is not ascribed to any raissoneur, who would present the authorial point of view on the matters under consideration. In the next passage Müller suggests a number of alternative manners of rendering the commentary on stage. It “can be delivered by a chorus or by the actor playing a given character to which the commentary relates, or it can be spoken by an actor playing a character which is (or is not) in some (any) way related to the character in question” . The commentary, although on the surface alien to the traditional dramatic form, is identified by Müller with drama and given theatrical quality, which of course might seem like a provocative trick played on the prospective recipients. However, at closer look, what Müller takes from the essence of the dramatic is a confrontation of various viewpoints when he writes that “the repertoire of roles proposed in the commentary – spectator voyeur supervisor reporter speaker agitator sparring-partner mourner shadow double apparition – stays at the disposal of all participants in the performance” . The multiperspectival character of the commentary testifies to its ultimate dramatic quality; a multiperspectival character which, paradoxically, a traditional drama excludes, showing stage events from a single point of view which results from an ostensible objectivity and closeness of the stage world.
Striving for the largest possible number of points of view on the represented events, Müller inverts the traditional relationship between the enacted dialogic scenes and the commentary, which in canonical dramatic forms serves only as a device for making it clear to the audience what stance they should adopt when watching the stage events. In Anatomie Titus the commentary addressed directly to the audience becomes actually the primary text, while the fable of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus, enacted by the actors and therefore dramatic in the traditional sense of the term, becomes merely an illustrative example, which gains the status of a manifest quotation. Without specifying the program for using it on stage, how are we able to grasp those properties of Anatomie Titus which testify to its being written for the stage? It seems that looking for distinctive features of theatricality in this text is a task doomed to failure, given the structure of the commentary as a continuous text deprived of stage directions or a typical division into characters’ lines. It seems that before specifying what the theatricality of Anatomie Titus consists in, one needs to take a detour through the very theorisations of the concept of theatricality of the text.
Drama theory of structuralist and semiotic descent, which posited that every dramatic text contains in itself performative clues for an ideal stage production, set out to develop an inventory of reading strategies and decoding procedures that could help infer these clues and on their basis generate a stage reality. Those methodologies have undoubtedly contributed to a better understanding of the structural principles according to which traditional texts for the stage are constructed and of how meaning is constituted in the processes of semiosis. They even allowed to capture the nature of the key developments of the 20th-century drama ex negativo, defining, for example, Brecht’s works as “non-Aristotelian dramas” and Ionesco’s texts as “anti-plays”. By the same token, they remained within the confines of the traditional paradigm of drama, which inevitably provided a background against which the evolution of the forms of writing for the stage was assessed. However, this tacit but constant presence of drama (prototypically understood as a depiction of interhuman interaction in a dialogic form) as a touchstone for examining the texts for the stage has been responsible for semiotic’s failure to meet the challenges posed by some recent developments in writing for the stage; the writing for the stage which no longer presents acting individuals confronted in dialogic exchanges, if only in the purely phatic and meaningless exchanges of the anti-protagonists of the theatre of the absurd; the writing for the theatre which departs from the paradigm of drama to such an extent that it calls for a radical reformulation of the assumption on which the theory of drama until recently quite firmly rested.
One of the ways of tracing the roots of the contemporary thinking about the development of forms of writing for the stage is to look back on Peter Szondi’s seminal study Theorie des modernen Dramas 1880-1950, which in the mid-1950s laid the grounds for the historical perspective on the research of texts for the stage. “Under the term we still understand only a particular form of writing for the stage” – Szondi writes, arguing that the essence of drama lies in its presentation of inter-human relation, while all the particular features which he further enumerates stem from this fundamental assumption . The dominance of dialogue as the sole medium of drama, precludes the appearance of chorus and monologue. However, Szondi devotes significantly little attention to the problem of theatre practice and its historical changeability as one of the factors that decisively influence the shape of the dramatic form in a given historical period. His comments are restricted to a short mention of the proscenium arch stage as the only adequate space for a prototypical dramatic text and the acting that seamlessly links the performer with the role.
In this respect Szondi’s followers in the 1970s, especially those of structuralist persuasion, extended his argument, supplementing his definition of drama and his enumeration of its constitutive features with one more recognition. As Manfred Pfister argues in his Theory and Analysis of Drama (1977) , it is impossible to speak about the definition and function of drama if one does not take into account one significant aspect – the reception of the text and its dependence on the recipients’ knowledge of the dominant conventions of theatre. It is only in the light of the basic tenets of dominant theatre practice that the division into primary and secondary text makes sense. Also the typography of a typically dramatic text and the way the quoted lines of characters are introduced testifies to drama’s indebtedness to the dominant idea of what and how can be put on stage. According to the classic theories of the dramatic text, what makes drama different from a narrative text is its manner of recounting the fictional story—in dramatic texts the story is not told, but presented in the verbal and non-verbal behaviour of the characters. Pfister defines the distinctive features of drama as embodied in two related principles: the principle of narration and the principle of figuration . Implicitly, the audience’s understanding of drama relies on the awareness of the simultaneity of various elements of the performance and the multimediality of theatre. Drama makes use of the iconic nature of theatrical signs, especially the presence of the actors, to represent fictitious individuals (the principle of figuration) as they take part in the stage events in which the story is being presented (the principle of narration). Consequently, reading drama presupposes the recipient’s familiarity with the medium of the theatre and its conventions. This, however, means that theatricality of the text is not an intrinsic feature of the text. It is rather a manner of reading it with the awareness of stage conventions present all the time at the back of reader’s mind. And this reading will necessarily be conditioned by the historically and culturally changing idea of theatre which lurks in the background as a touchstone that allows evaluating a given text as possessed with a stage potential or not.
The natural consequence of adopting such assumptions about the nature of texts for the theatre is a radical split between dramaticality and theatricality; between on the one hand structural features of a text and on the other hand its function as a material for a prospective stage production. In order to re-evaluate this relationship, it is necessary to see the contemporary writing for the stage in the light of the paradigmatic changes that go under the name of performative turn, focusing particularly on the manner of conceptualizing the notion of the text. Within the framework of the semiotic paradigm, which dominated until approximately the mid-1980s, the entire culture and all its pertaining phenomena were looked upon as texts, endowed with a specific structure and decipherable according to the existing and commonly shared codes. Pfister’s notion of drama as a text possessed of a set of defining structural features which testify to the text’s function as a matrix of a stage world provides a telling example of this approach. However, the studies on performativity, deriving from the view of language put forward by John Austin, have changed the idea of what a text is and how it addresses its recipient. In his 1952 book How to Do Things with Words , Austin identifies the performative utterances as the ones which not only communicate some semiotic meaning but also have some effects in reality (e.g. the formulae of announcing that a pair has become a married couple or sentencing somebody to prison). This effect is strictly connected with the context in which the utterance is delivered, particularly with the position and rights of the speaking subject. Within this framework a given utterance does not posses a structure and meaning as such, in abstraction from the circumstances in which it comes into being. Rather, its meaning and function is attributed to it a posteriori, as the effect of this utterance appearing in specific circumstances, depending on whether the felicity conditions for a given performative act are fulfilled or not(e.g. being a judge who has the prerogatives for announcing a valid sentence). Thus Austin, introducing the category of performative utterances and then in the course of the next few years extending them on the entire language, came up with a concept challenging the fundamental semiotic notions. Instead of abstract and context-independent textual structures, he proposed a concept of a highly context-bound and therefore historically and culturally contingent structures; structures which exist only in the beholder’s eye, as an effect of reading a particular utterance by specific recipients in specific circumstances.
When seen in this light, the notion of text for the stage requires a radical reformulation, different from the typically structuralist accounts. Theatricality of a text, i.e. its structure suggesting that the text has been destined as a “recipe” for a stage production, is not this text’s immanent feature. It is rather a manner of reading this text in the light of dominant theatre conventions, which holds good also for the traditional dramatic texts. Their theatricality has been taken for granted and treated as a natural property of the text exactly because of the division into dialogue and stage directions. It was on the strength of this conviction that text were said to be endowed with a “theatrical potential”. The approach to text-theatricality in the context of studies of performativity allows not only to treat texts primarily not destined for the theatre, such as novels, poems, philosophical and scientific treatises or newspaper articles, as material for a stage production. Also, it allows to conceptualize differently some of the textual experiments carried out in the realm of playwriting for the last thirty years. These texts may only become theatrical as a result of reading them with a view to a prospective stage production, according to the idea of theatre adopted by the reader and the purposes that a given text is to fulfil when finally rendered on stage.
Thinking further along these lines, one may posit that some writing for the stage of the last four decades diverges from the typically dramatic structures and thus prevents reading it only as a material for a mimetic theatre which narrates stories and shows then in the form of interactions of conflicted characters. Such a textual structure opens up the possibility of reading the text with different prospective uses in theatre in view. The ultimate criterion of the theatrical quality of the text is either the author’s manifested intention (explicit classification as a play) or the fact that a text has been used in the theatre. In consequence, the structure is an effect of reading and using of a given text in a specific context. Thus these texts do not provoke the question of their intrinsic theatrical structure, but the question how to read them so as to make them theatrical. Consequently, instead of talking about the intrinsic theatricality of a text one should perhaps talk about methods of creating the effect of theatricality of the text, assuming necessarily a historically and culturally contingent idea of theatre standing behind it. A typically dramatic text would be an example of a structure which on the strength of a convention matches the dominant idea of the theatre. It appeals to the reader’s knowledge of theatre conventions and his/her ability to recognise them. The texts written for the stage today if they draw on conventional theatricality at all, they do it quite against the grain. They quote it, often ironically, in order to bring to light the constructedness of the dramatic form and all its textual conventions which became naturalized for us, and therefore its workings pass unnoticed for us. And very often they do it in order to show how drama serves the need of the dominant ideology, an illustrious example of which is Müller’s Anatomie Titus.
The reason for Müller’s subversion of the canonical dramatic form can be easily found in the text itself, which, as I have already demonstrated, takes as its theme the clash of two civilisations and the manner of imposing the desired ideology on the opponent by force or persuasion. And Müller is particularly interested in the role of art and literature in this process of imposing the intended world-view not only by a physical invasion, but primarily through a colonization of discourse and the conceptualisation of reality. In Anatomie Titus Müller puts into question the ostensible innocence of literature as an aesthetic medium which has assumedly little to do with external reality, because it belongs to the realm of fiction. Müller demonstrates to what extent the patterns of thinking and behaviour inscribed in fictional fables could serve as a stock of models for real actions. In this sense violence is not an atavistic and irrational phenomenon but rather it is propelled by culture itself and the patterns of conduct propagated in and by literature. This is the ultimate meaning of the text’s motto: “to open humanity’s veins like a book, to browse in spurts of blood”. When constructing his model based on the scaffolding of the original Titus Andronicus, Müller consciously leaves all the intertextual references to classical Roman and Greek masterpieces that Shakespeare has also included in this text. Moreover, at the critical junctions of the fable the commentary explicitly employs the metaphor of world as a theatre, while the vicious circle of revenge propelled by Titus’s and Tamora’s mutual hatred is shown explicitly in terms of a staging in which every character wants to assume the role of the director. “THE NEGRO IS HIS OWN DIRECTOR OPENS THE CURTAIN COMPOSES THE PLOT” (p. 110) – the commentary announces the moment Aaron suggests to Demetrius and Chiron that they can satisfy their desire for Lavinia if they capture the girl by force. Similarly, Titus, forging his revenge on the house of Bassian, is sure he is about to “write the next drama which will astound the future generations” (128). When Tamora arrives at Titus’s house dressed as the mythical goddess of revenge, to coerce her arch-opponent to betray his son, the commentary announces that this moment “THE ROMAN THEATRE BLOSSOMS” (166). From those quotes one can clearly infer that by putting on a par literature and physical violence as alternative and complementary means of exerting power, Müller focuses particularly on the function of drama as a type of discourse which due to its ability to generate stage worlds that copy the external world may serve most effectively the purpose of ideological persuasion.
The self-reflexive dimension of Müller’s text evinces itself precisely in the manner of rendering Shakespeare’s text and giving it the status of a quotation; a quotation not only of a great tragic plot, but primarily of a traditional dramatic form charged with the function of propagating the dominant vision of the world. And it is this aspect of traditional drama that Müller lays bare in Anatomie Titus, insightfully reading the Shakespearian original. Thus his Anatomie Titus becomes not only an anatomy of Shakespeare’s text which reveals its ideological implications, hidden under the surface of humanist message of the original play. It is also an anatomy of dramatic form itself and the way it can be used as a matrix for a closed and one-dimensional stage world which passes onto its recipients a single desired perspective on the external reality and thus becomes a tool of discursive oppression. No wonder that linking the commentary with the fable of Shakespeare’s play, Müller creates a form which resists an all-too-easy reading and prevents the use of the text according to the existing rules of theatre practice. It is written in such a way, that each act of reception of the text (be it reading or a stage production) is bound to initiate an interplay between the text and the context, erasing the divide between them. In this way Müller undermines the traditional authority of the text, which necessarily requires for its existence a partner in dialogue—a co-operative and critical recipient who activates the stock of his or her cultural knowledge and submits it to scrutiny in the “here and now” of the situation of reception. Therefore the commentary is not only a means of introducing to the text the reality of the author, as Müller himself stressed, but also the reality of each individual recipient. Consequently, an anatomical dissection of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus is not only an anatomy of traditional drama and its function as a vehicle of ideology, but also an anatomy of the recipient’s own historically and culturally contingent patterns of perception and behaviour.

Anatomie Titus Fall of Rome (Anatomia da Queda de Roma de Tito, 1984) , quando colocada contra outros textos recentes de Heiner Müller escritos na virada dos anos 80, pode parecer surpreendentemente tradicional. Textos do mesmo período, tais como Hamletmaschine (1977), Margem Abandonada (1981) ou Descrição de Imagem (1984), são visivelmente despojadas das características típicas de um texto para o palco, tais como diálogos que impulsionem uma ação logicamente desenvolvida, as figuras antropomórficas com quem os espectadores possam se identificar enfaticamente ou um projeto inscrito na aparência exterior do mundo do palco, inscrito nas direções do palco. Conseqüentemente, estes textos já à primeira vista escapam a qualquer classificação clara como dramaticamente ou conseqüentemente encenáveis. Contra suas características a nova versão de Heiner Müller para a tragédia de Shakespeare Titus Andronicus dá uma impressão de um retorno à idéia mais manifestamente teatral do texto. Anatomia de Titus é muito fiel ao enredo do original, mostrando todas as complexidades da estória sangrenta de vingança da queda da casa nobre romana de Andronicus no tempo da queda de Roma sob o assédio dos bárbaros godos. Os diálogos escritos por Müller lidos como uma tradução literal da tragédia de Shakespeare, aparecem em versos brancos ritmicamente simples. Suplementados com imagens poéticas contemporâneas, o enredo original de Shakespeare para Titus Andronicus torna-se um modelo histórico que ilustra as forças civilizadoras, nacionais e socialmente opostas. Na Anatomia de Tito o conflito entre godos e romanos se torna, de acordo com as intenções de Müller, uma parábola muito atual sobre a “intrusão do terceiro mundo sobre o primeiro” •. Müller destaca explicitamente essas relações na ação da peça na qual, os bárbaros godos aprendem com os romanos como chegar à argumentação lógica para justificar sacrifícios humanos, enquanto os romanos se apropriam dos métodos de matar cruamente e sem remorso, embora no começo eles se jactem de ser de uma cidade que “valoriza mais o papel que a pedra” e dá prioridade ao raciocínio lógico sobre a violência física. Sem duvida, investigando a dimensão política da Anatomia de Titus é uma tarefa que vale a pena empreender, especialmente porque o texto toca em problemas que tem ganhado validade no contexto de debates recentes sobre as possíveis forma e função do teatro e drama engajados de hoje. Entretanto, eu omitiria a discussão de possíveis interpretações da apropriação de Müller do original de Shakespeare e da natureza e extensão de sua contribuição para a critica da globalização da cultura ocidental pós-colonial. Eu estou interessado apenas em demonstrar que a despeito da forma aparentemente tradicional de seu texto, que na superfície parece se prender ao formato do drama típico, Müller realmente escreve contra a natureza das convenções dominantes da forma como se escreve para o palco, subvertendo as relações estabelecidas entre o texto e sua produção para o palco.
A estrutura da Anatomia de Titus não é tão tradicional como pode parecer à primeira vista. Verdade, Müller mantém a fábula inteira e a tipologia do drama, que é usualmente vista como prova da encenabilidade do texto. Mas à parte de uma tradicional divisão do texto primário dos diálogos e o texto secundário das direções de palco insuficientes, ele introduz mais um elemento na forma do texto. As passagens de dialogo são varias vezes interrompidas por parágrafos maiores e menores de prosa poética, escrita principalmente como comentários de Müller à ação principal da peça. Esse comentário preenche numerosas funções que não estão restritas a dar um relato épico aos eventos da peça e fornecer ligações que faltam nas partes de dialogo. O comentário, claramente escrito sob uma perspectiva que é externa ao curso principal dos acontecimentos, não se encaixa mudanças do enredo. A linguagem altamente metafórica do comentário freqüentemente requer do leitor um esforço para recuperar as conexões e entender o sentido do aparentemente caótico amontoado de imagens poéticas. A par disso, o comentário contextualiza a trama antiga nos tempos atuais, porque muitas de suas passagens são construídas como montagem de imagens poéticas que postas ao lado do exercito romano e dos esquadrões de luta como os dos fascistas, as antigas hospedarias e os modernos bares, arenas romanas e estádios de futebol, assim como mensagens nos boletins dos noticiários da TV. Portanto, mesmo se recordarmos os experimentos metateatrais de Brecht, é claro que Müller inverte o relacionamento típico entre o comentário autoral e a tradução em dialogo da lenda. É o primeiro que ganha proeminência sobre o segundo, trabalhando sob um prisma através do qual os eventos da peça são contemplados. Assim a introdução do comentário não serve ao propósito de distanciar os espectadores do modo épico e impõe a eles o papel de analistas da lenda como um modelo sugerido de mecanismos históricos. Ao contrário, o enredo de Müller imediatiza e torna concretos os processos históricos abstratos sobre os quais o comentário fala.

Entretanto, olhando mais de perto, o que Muller tira da essência do dramático é uma confrontação de vários pontos de vista quando ele escreve que “o repertorio de personagens proposto no comentário – espectador observador supervisor repórter locutor agitador parceiro de luta lamentador dupla aparição de sombra – permanece à disposição de todos os participantes do espetáculo” . O caráter de multiperspectiva do comentário testifica ma sua qualidade dramática definitiva, um caráter de multiperspectiva que, paradoxalmente, um drama tradicional exclui, mostrando eventos de palco de um único ponto de vista que resulta de uma objetividade ostensiva e de uma intimidade com o mundo do palco.
Em busca de o maior numero possível de pontos de vista dos eventos representados, Muller inverte a relação tradicional entre as cenas de dialogo encenadas e o comentário, que nas formas dramáticas estabelecidas serve apenas como um instrumento para tornar claro para a audiência que posição devem adotar quando estiverem assistindo os eventos do palco. Na Anatomia de Titus o comentário endereçado diretamente à audiência se torna realmente o texto principal, enquanto a lenda de Shakespeare Titus Andronicus, encenada pelos atores e, portanto dramáticas no sentido tradicional do termo, se torna meramente um exemplo ilustrativo, que ganha o status de uma citação obvia. Sem especificar o método para usá-lo no palco, como podemos ser capazes de alcançar aquelas propriedades de Anatomia de Titus que testemunham ela ter sido escrita para o palco? Parece que olhar para as características teatrais próprias neste texto é uma tarefa destinada ao fracasso, dada a estrutura do comentário como um texto contínuo privado de direções de palco ou de uma típica divisão em linhas dos personagens. Parece que antes de especificar em que consiste a teatralidade de Anatomia de Titus, é necessário tomar um desvio através da própria teorização do conceito de teatralidade do texto.
A teoria do drama de origem estruturalista e semiótica, que estabelece que todo texto dramático contém em si mesmo pistas performáticas para uma produção ideal para o palco, colocada para desenvolver um inventario de estratégias de leitura e procedimentos para decifrar que poderiam ajudar a descobrir essas pistas e com base nelas gerar uma realidade de palco. Estas metodologias têm indubitavelmente contribuído para uma melhor compreensão dos princípios estruturais de acordo com o modo como textos tradicionais para o palco são construídos e como o significado é constituído no processo de semiose . Eles até permitem capturar a natureza dos desenvolvimentos chave do drama ex negativo do século XX, definindo, por exemplo, os trabalhos de Brecht como “dramas não Aristotélicos” e os textos de Ionesco como “anti-peças”. Pelo mesmo motivo, eles permaneceram dentro d0os limites do paradigma tradicional do drama, que inevitavelmente traz um pano de fundo contra o qual a evolução das formas de escrever para o palco era acessada. Entretanto, esta implícita mas constante presença do drama (entendido como descrição de interação inter-humana em forma de dialogo) como pedra de toque para examinar os textos para o palco tem sido responsável pelo fracasso da semiótica para enfrentar os desafios colocados por alguns recentes desenvolvimentos na maneira de escrever para o teatro; escrever para o teatro que não mais apresenta indivíduos atuando confrontados em trocas de dialogo, se apenas nos diálogos puramente factuais e sem significado do teatro do absurdo; o escrever para o teatro que parte de um paradigma do drama em tal extensão que pede por uma reformulação radical da suposição na qual as teoria do drama até recentemente se apoiava com firmeza.
Um dos meios de encontrar as raízes do pensamento contemporâneo sobre o desenvolvimento das formas de escrever para o palco é lembrar do estudo fundamental de Peter Szondi Teoria do Teatro Moderno 1880-1950, que na metade dos anos 50 estabeleceu as bases para a perspectiva histórica na pesquisa de textos para o palco. “Sob o termo nós ainda entendemos apenas uma particular forma de escrever para o palco” – escreve Szondi, argumentando que a essência do drama reside na apresentação das inter-relações humanas, enquanto todas as características particulares que ele enumera posteriormente derivam desta suposição fundamental. A predominância do diálogo como único veiculo do drama, evita o aparecimento de coro ou monologo. Entretanto, Szondi dedica significativamente pouca atenção ao problema da prática teatral e sua mutabilidade histórica como um dos fatores que influenciam decisivamente o aspecto9 da forma dramática em um dado período histórico. Seus comentários se restringem a uma pequena referencia ao arco do proscenio como o único espaço adequado para um texto dramático prototípico e a atuação que liga o ator ao personagem.
A esse respeito os seguidores de Szondi nos anos 70, especialmente aqueles de convicções estruturalistas, estenderam seu argumento, suplementando sua definição do drama e sua enumeração de suas características constitutivas com mais uma consideração. Como Manfred Pfister argumenta em sua Teoria e Análise do Drama (1977) , é impossível falar sobre a definição e função do drama se não se tomar em consideração um aspecto significativo – a recepção do texto e sua dependência do conhecimento dos receptores das convenções dominantes do teatro. É apenas à luz dos princípios básicos da prática dominante do teatro que a divisão entre texto primário e secundário faz sentido. Também a tipografia de um texto tipicamente dramático e a maneira em que as linhas dos personagens citadas são introduzidas testemunham a divida do drama para com a idéia dominante sobre o quê e como pode ser colocado no palco. De acordo com as teorias clássicas do texto dramático, o que faz o drama diferente de um texto narrativo é a sua maneira de recontar a estória ficcional – em textos dramáticos a estória não é contada, mas apresentada no comportamento verbal e não verbal dos personagens. Pfister define as características distintas do drama como incorporadas em dois princípios relacionados: o princípio da narração e o princípio da figuração. Implicitamente, a compreensão do drama pela audiência se apóia na consciência da simultaneidade de vários elementos da performance e na multimidialidade do teatro. O drama utiliza-se da natureza iconográfica dos signos do teatro, especialmente da presença dos atores, para representar personagens ficcionais (o princípio da figuração) quando eles tomam parte nos eventos do palco nos quais a estória é apresentada (o princípio da narração). Conseqüentemente, ler um drama pressupõe a familiaridade do receptor com o teatro e as suas convenções. Isto, entretanto, significa que a teatralidade do texto não é uma característica intrínseca do texto. È, ao contrário, uma maneira de lê-lo com a consciência das convenções do palco presentes todo o tempo no interior da mente do leitor. E esta leitura terá que ser necessariamente condicionada pela idéia historicamente e culturalmente mutável do teatro que se esconde no segundo plano como uma pedra de toque que permite avaliar um texto dado que possua ou não um potencial de palco.
A conseqüência natural de adotar tais afirmações sobre a natureza dos textos para teatro é uma ruptura radical entre dramaticidade e teatralidade; por um lado as características estruturais de um texto e por outro lado a sua função como material para uma produção teatral em perspectiva. Para reavaliar esta relação, é necessário ver os textos contemporâneos para o teatro à luz das mudanças de paradigma que aparecem sob o nome de voltas performáticas, focalizadas particularmente na maneira de conceitualizar a noção do texto. Dentro da estrutura do paradigma semiótico, que dominou até aproximadamente o meio dos anos 80, a inteira cultura e todas os seus fenômenos eram considerados como textos, dotados de uma estrutura especifica e decifrável de acordo com os códigos existentes e comumente compartilhados. A noção de drama de Pfizer de drama como um texto que possui um conjunto de características estruturais que o definem, os quais testemunham a função do texto como uma matriz do mundo do palco que fornece um exemplo desse caminho. Entretanto, os estudos sobre a representabilidade, derivados de uma linguagem apresentada por John Austin, têm mudado a idéia do que um texto é e como ele se dirige ao espectador. Em seu livro Como Fazer as Coisas com Palavras , Austin identifica as falas performáticas como aquelas que não apenas comunicam alguns significados semióticos como também têm alguns efeitos na realidade (e.g. as fórmulas de enunciar que um par se casou ou sentenciar alguém à prisão). Este efeito é estritamente conectado com o contexto no qual a fala é emitida, particularmente com a posição e direitos do personagem em questão. Dentro deste contexto uma determinada fala pode não possuir estrutura e significado como tais, numa abstração das circunstancias nas quais ele vem a existir. Em vez disso, seus significado e função são a eles atribuídos a posteriori , como um efeito de sua emissão aparecendo em circunstancias especificas, dependendo se as condições de acerto para um dado ato performático são preenchidas ou não (e.g. sendo um juiz que tem as prerrogativas para anunciar uma sentença válida). Assim Austin, introduzindo a categoria de falas performáticas e então no curso de poucos anos estendendo-as na linguagem inteira, apareceu com um conceito que desafia as noções fundamentais da semiótica. Em vez de estruturas textuais abstratas e independentes de contexto, ele propôs um conceito de estruturas altamente ligadas ao contexto e portanto histórica e culturalmente acidentais; estruturas que existem apenas nos olhos do observador, como um efeito de ler uma fala particular por receptores específicos em circunstâncias específicas.
Quando vista a essa luz, a noção de texto para o teatro requer uma reformulação radical, diferente de explicações tipicamente estruturais. Teatralidade de um texto, i.e. sua estrutura sugerindo que o texto foi destinado a ser uma “receita” para uma produção teatral, não é a característica principal desse texto. È mais uma maneira de ler esse texto à luz das convenções dominantes do teatro, que se mantém adequadas também para os textos dramáticos tradicionais. Sua teatralidade tem sido aceita e tratada como uma propriedade natural do texto exatamente por causa da divisão em direções de palco e de diálogo. Foi na força desta convicção que foi dito que o texto é dotado de um “potencial teatral”. A abordagem da teatralidade do texto no contexto dos estudos de suas características de performance permitem não apenas tratar textos não feitos para teatro, tais como romances, poemas, tratados filosóficos e científicos ou artigos de jornal, como material para uma produção teatral. Também, isso permite conceitualizar diferentemente alguns dos experimentos textuais levados a efeito no domínio da dramaturgia dos últimos trinta anos. Estes textos podem apenas se tornar teatrais como resultado de lê-los com vistas a uma produção teatral em perspectiva, de acordo com a idéia de teatro adotada pelo leitor e os propósitos de um texto dado quando finalmente mostrado no palco.
Pensando, além disso, ao longo dessas linhas, pode-se postular que alguns textos para o teatro das ultimas quatro décadas divergem das estruturas tipicamente dramáticas e assim evitam lê-los apenas como material para um teatro de imitação que narra estórias e as mostra na forma de interações de personagens conflituosos. Tal estrutura textual abre a possibilidade de ler o texto com diferentes usos em perspectiva para o teatro em vista. Os critérios definitivos da qualidade teatral do texto são ou a manifesta intenção do autor (classificação explicita como uma peça) ou o fato de que o texto tem sido usado no teatro. Em conseqüência, a estrutura é um efeito de ler e usar um texto dado em um contexto especifico. Assim esses textos não provocam a questão de sua intrínseca estrutura teatral, mas a questão sobre como lê-los para fazê-los teatrais. Conseqüentemente, em vez de falar sobre a teatralidade intrínseca do texto se deveria talvez falar sobre métodos de criar o efeito de teatralidade do texto, assumindo necessariamente uma idéia acidentalmente histórica e cultural de teatro posicionada atrás dela. Um texto tipicamente dramático seria um exemplo de uma estrutura que baseada na força de uma convenção combina com a idéia dominante do teatro. Isso apela para o conhecimento do leitor das convenções do teatro e a sua habilidade para reconhecê-las. Os textos escritos para o teatro hoje se é que se prendem à teatralidade, eles o fazem contra a sua natureza. Muller demonstra até onde os padrões de pensamento e comportamento presentes em fábulas ficcionais poderiam servir como fonte de modelos para ações reais. Neste sentido a violência não é um fenômeno irracional e atávico mas é impelida pela cultura e pelos padrões de conduta propagados dentro e pela literatura. Este é o significado principal do texto: “abrir as veias da humanidade como um livro, para folheá-las como páginas de sangue”. Quando construía seu modelo baseado na estrutura do Titus Andronicus original, Muller conscientemente deixou todas as referencias intertextuais a obras primas clássicas romanas e gregas que Shakespeare tinha também incluído no seu texto. Entretanto, na ligação critica da fábula o comentário explicitamente emprega a metáfora do mundo como um teatro, enquanto o círculo vicioso da vingança estimulada pelo ódio mútuo de Tito e Tamora é mostrado explicitamente em termos de sua encenação em que cada personagem quer assumir o papel do diretor. “O NEGRO É SEU PRÓPRIO DIRETOR ABRE A CORTINA COMPÕE A CENA” (p.110) – o comentário anuncia o momento em que Aarão sugere a Demétrio e Chiron que eles podem satisfazer seus desejos por Lavínia se eles capturarem a garota pela força. Similarmente, Titus, forjando sua vingança na casa de Bassian, está certo de que está para “escrever o próximo drama que maravilhará as próximas gerações” (p.128). Quando Tamora chega à casa de Titus vestido como a mítica deusa da vingança, para coagir seu arquiinimigo a trair seu filho, o comentário anuncia que nesse momento “O TEATRO ROMANO FLORESCE” (p.166). Dessas citações se pode claramente inferir que colocando a par literatura e violência física como meios alternativos e complementares de exercer o poder, Muller aborda particularmente a função do drama como um tipo de discurso que deve sua habilidade de gerar mundos no teatro que copiam o mundo exterior pode servir muito eficientemente como propósito de persuasão ideológica.
A dimensão auto-reflexiva do texto de |Muller se mostra precisamente na maneira de empregar o texto de Shakespeare e dar a ele o status de uma citação; uma citação não apenas de um grande enredo trágico, mas principalmente uma forma dramática tradicional carregada com a função de propagar a visão dominante do mundo. E é este aspecto do drama tradicional que Muller expõe em Anatomia de Titus, criteriosamente lendo o original Shakespeariano. Assim sua Anatomia de Titus se torna não somente uma anatomia do texto de Shakespeare que revela suas implicações ideológicas, escondidas sob a superfície da mensagem humanista da peça original. È também uma anatomia da própria forma dramática e a maneira em que ela pode ser usada como modelo para um mundo teatral fechado e unidimensional que passa para o receptor a única perspectiva desejada da realidade externa e assim se torna um instrumento do discurso da opressão. Não admira que ligando o comentário com a fábula da peça de Shakespeare, Muller crie uma forma que resiste à leitura muito fácil e evita o uso do texto de acordo com as regras existentes da prática teatral. É escrito de tal forma que cada ato de recepção do texto (seja ele leitura ou em uma produção teatral) iniciará uma inter-relação entre o texto e o contexto, apagando a divisão entre eles. Desta forma Muller enfraquece a tradicional autoridade do texto, que requer necessariamente pra sua existência um parceiro no diálogo – um receptor cooperativo e crítico que ativa o seu estoque de conhecimento e o submete a escrutínio no “aqui e agora” da situação de recepção. Portanto o comentário é não apenas um meio de introduzir no texto a realidade do autor, como o próprio Muller enfatiza, mas também a realidade de cada receptor individual. Conseqüentemente, uma dissecação anatômica do Titus Andronicus de Shakespeare é não só uma anatomia do drama tradicional e sua função como veículo de uma ideologia, mas também uma anatomia dos próprios padrões histórica e culturalmente dependentes de percepção e comportamento do receptor.

You would think after last month’s publicity tour for Run, Fatboy Run we have
heard all we can hear from Simon Pegg, but in a new interview with the official
Star Trek Magazine, the new Scotty talks about how he would have loved to hear
on-set stories from the original Scotty and he also talks about the production
design as well how the film will play with the fans.
Pegg on what he would have wanted to ask the late James Doohan:
I probably would have just wanted to hear some on-set stories. I think it
would have been funny to have heard about what went on back in the day, and
share some reminiscences with him. I’m sure things would have come up in
conversation. When you sit down with somebody’s who’s played the character
like that for so long you’re going to get some kind of insight — it’s a
tragedy that he’s gone anyway, but it’s also a shame that I didn’t get to
speak to him.
Pegg on director JJ Abrams and his vision for Trek:
In terms of working with J.J., he’s a very enthusiastic and really clever
director. He really understands the show. He’s extremely thorough when it
comes to the show, and extremely faithful to it. He loves it, and I think
that’s very important. From what I have seen of the production design, it’s a
fantastic merging of then and now. It’s a really fine line to walk — if you
did have it completely as it was then, it would look out of place, so you need
to bring it into focus a little bit. I think that’s been done just enough to
make it work. It’s very much Star Trek and I think they’ve done an astounding
job on it..
Simon Pegg is a self-described ‘geek’ and Trekkie, and after working on the film
he feels that it respects his fellow fans.
There’s a lot to live up to. We’re very aware of the magnitude of what it is.
It’s a big responsibility: it’s not the Starsky and Hutch film, some sort of
cod nostalgia parody hokum. It really is genuinely a serious movie. It has
elements of light-heartedness like all the Star Trek movies do, but there’s a
lot of wonderful things which I think the Trek fans will get a lot of kicks
out of, just the familiarity. There’s a lot of stuff in there for people who
know the show. I think everyone is going to enjoy it, anyone who goes to see
it, but I think it will be especially enjoyed by the Star Trek fans because
there are many nods in there which are specifically for them.

With Leonard Nimoy's involvement and with the support of the Star
Trek community, the role as Spock is not in the least bit daunting
to Zachary Quinto.
As reported by Jonja.net, portraying Spock feels right for Quinto
and he is ready for all that will follow as a result of it.
"It really wasn't daunting, it felt so right in a weird way," said
Quinto when asked about playing the role which Nimoy made famous. "I
found out they were doing the movie right as my episodes of 'Heroes'
were about to air so the timing of it was just so precise and so
specific and it just made so much sense."
It helps to be working with good people. "And on top of that to be
making it with these people who are of the most imaginative people
in Hollywood today and to have Leonard be involved, it really didn't
feel daunting."
Quinto is grateful for the support of the sci-fi community, both for
his role of Sylar in Heroes and for his upcoming role of Spock in
Star Trek XI. "...At Comic-Con last summer when we went down and
announced I would be playing the role and there were like 6,500
people or something in this auditorium and I never felt
overwhelmed," he said. "I felt like I was very well supported by the
creative energy behind this project and the people involved are
people that I have long hoped to work with."
After playing a high-profile role like Spock, Quinto realizes that
things will change for him, but he is ready for what lies beyond
Star Trek XI. "I have been made to be prepared for this," he said.
"I feel like from this point on, Spock will be part of my career as
an actor. I don’t anticipate my career as an actor to stop now that
I have played this role. I get that question a lot like 'Oh now
you're playing Spock, like what are you going to do?’ I am going
keep doing other things that excite me and challenge me and
challenge my audience and excite my audience as well.
"I have been very fortunate to be so warmly embraced by this sci-fi
community,"said Quinto, "and now more specifically the 'Star Trek'
community. That means a great deal to me, but my career as an actor
isn't limited to that genre or that realm. So I am now excited to go
off and explore the territories and play other roles and do other
things as well. I'm about to go back into production on the show
['Heroes'], that will take up a lot of time, pretty much right up
until when the movie comes out next year. I'll probably try to
squeeze a movie or two in while we're working on the show if I can,
and then gotta get back on stage. It's time for that as well."

Broadway.com posted a new interview with Star Trek The Next Generation star
Patrick Stewart, in which he talks about his role in Macbeth and, of course,
Star Trek. Here are few excerpts.
Your career has been mix of "high" and "low" culture, from Shakespeare to all
kinds of TV parts, notably Star Trek: The Next Generation. Is it simply a matter
of doing things that appeal to you?
Absolutely. I do a lot of voiceovers, for instance. I've a recurring character
in a wonderful Fox animated series called American Dad, which is very explicit
and "out there" [laughs]. I play the British head of the CIA, and I have to do
some really outrageous and shocking things. I get as much pleasure out of those
recording sessions as I do Macbeth. If the quality of the work is good, then
there's always satisfaction to be found. I've been lucky that I've always worked
on quality projects. Star Trek was a quality project.
Speaking of Star Trek, how did the folks back home react to your success in
America?
The English have got a rather odd relationship with success. They like their
people to be successful, but they're not too keen on them being successful
elsewhere. And they like to remind them that maybe they're not as successful as
they think they are [laughs]. Performing in the States is so much fun because
people truly celebrate success here. Our audiences [at Macbeth] know that
they're at a smash hit, and they relish every aspect of it. You can hear them
congratulating themselves that they're there at this event, and they're going to
get everything out of it and then cheer us to the rafters. Whereas English
audiences tend to be a little hard to convince. "Prove it to us," they might
say. But I love working in England. What I'm doing right now is all I ever
wanted to do: great Shakespeare on English stages with a fine group of actors.
Not bad for an actor named the sexiest man on television when you were over 50.
Yes, that was a curiosity wasn't it? [Laughs.] Nobody was more astonished than I
was.
I read that you and your Star Trek co-stars formed a band. Can we expect to see
you as King Arthur in Spamalot?
Haha. Wouldn't that be fun? No, I didn't form a bad. Brent Spiner, who played
Data the android, made a beautiful album of standards, and I suggested that he
sing a song by the Ink Spots, "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie." The Ink Spots did this
distinctive humming and crooning in the background, so Brent asked Michael Dorn,
LeVar Burton and myself to do backup vocals for this one particular number. We
called ourselves the Sun Spots. I'm afraid our career began and ended in one
night, but we did actually record the song in a studio where the Rolling Stones
had recorded, so we felt pretty good about ourselves.

Sua carreira tem sido uma mistura de “alta” e “baixa” cultura, de Shakespeare a todos os tipos de participação na TV, principalmente Jornada nas Estrelas: A Nova Geração. É apenas um caso de fazer coisas que o atrai?
Absolutamente, eu faço muitas dublagens, por exemplo. Eu tive um personagem em uma série de animação maravilhosa da Fox chamada American Dad, que é muito explícita e “out there” (risos – referência a “The Truth is out there” – Arquivo X – N.T.) Eu interpreto o Chefe britânico da CIA, e eu tenho que fazer algumas coisas realmente abusivas e chocantes. Eu consigo tanto prazer dessa sessões de gravação quanto em Macbeth. Se a qualidade do trabalho é boa, então sempre haverá satisfação a ser encontrada. Eu tenho tido sorte de ter sempre trabalhado em projetos de qualidade. Jornada nas Estrelas foi um projeto de qualidade.
Falando de Jornada nas Estrelas, como o povo na Inglaterra reagiu a seu sucesso na América?
Os ingleses têm um estranho relacionamento com o sucesso. Eles gostam que seu povo seja bem sucedido, mas não muito entusiastas que o sejam em outros lugares. E eles gostam de lembrá-los que talvez eles não são tão bem sucedidos como pensam que são.(risos) Interpretar nos Estados Unidos é tão divertido porque as pessoas realmente celebram o sucesso aqui. Nossas platéias (em Macbeth) sabem que estão assitindo a uma peças de sucesso. Você pode ouvi-los cumprimentando a si mesmos por estarem nesse evento, e que eles vão extrair o máximo disso e então nos aplaudem de pé. Ao contrário, as platéias inglesas são mais difíceis de convencer. “Prove isso para nós”, eles podem dizer. Mas eu amo trabalhar na Inglaterra. O que estou fazendo agora é tudo que sempre quis fazer: grandes peças de Shakespeare em palcos ingleses com um bom grupo de atores. Nada mau para um ator chamado de o homeme mais sexy da televisão quando você já estava acima dos 50. Sim, isso foi uma curiosidade, não foi? (risos) Ninguém ficou mais espantado do que eu.
Eu li que você e seus colegas de elenco de Jornada nas Estrelas formaram uma banda. Podemos esperar vê-lo como Rei Artur em Spamalot?
Haha. Não seria engraçado? Não eu não formei uma banda. Brent Spiner, que interpretou Data, o andróide, fez um lindo álbum de sucessos, e eu sugeri que ele cantasse uma canção dos Ink Spots, “It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie”. Os Ink Spots fizeram sons de fundo, assim Brent Spiner pediu a Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton e a mim que fizéssemos backing vocals para este número em particular. Nós chamamos a nós mesmos os Sun Spots. Star Trek The Next Generation actor Wil Wheaton posted in his blog a few
comments regarding director J.J. Abrams recent remarks about his Star Trek movie
(story). Here are few excerpts of Wheaton's article.
"Speaking as a lifelong geek, my knee-jerk reaction when I hear someone talking
about "reinventing" something like Trek is that it will be a tower of suck,
built out of an endless supply of Jar-Jars and midichlorians."
"However! Ron Moore reinvented BSG, and it's the greatest thing ever, so
reinventing things isn't automatically horrible. In fact, if the article had
been titled "JJ Abrams promises thrilling effects for Star Trek movie" I'd be
celebrating right now. Language is important, as they say."
"I guess it comes down to who is doing the reinventing, and if their vision
builds upon the existing foundation in an interesting way, instead of pulling a
massive, insulting retcon on us all. In his favor, JJ Abrams is really, really
good at starting things (not so much with the keeping them awesome after one
season, sadly,) but absolutely awesome at starting things. Since this is the
beginning of Star Trek, I'm hopeful. Apprehensive, but hopeful."
"So, yeah, not entirely sure how I feel about the "reinventing." At least the
people who totally fucked Star Trek up aren't involved, but why does anyone need
to "reinvent" Star Trek at all? There's a good reason it managed to endure
through four decades and several generations of Trekkies and casual viewers
alike. I hope JJ Abrams groks that, because I really want to like this movie."

to say out loud: most of the Star Trek movies are absolute garbage. There have
been ten Trek movies, and I'd say that two of them are accessible to mainstream
audiences, another two are great, and the remaining six are nearly unwatchable.
If JJ Abrams wants to make his new Trek movie unlike the 80% of Trek movies that
aren't that good, that's just fine with me. Not that my opinion means anything,
you understand, but rambling on and on about things like this is the price of
being a geek, and I regret nothing. NOTHING!"

“Mas, Ron Moore reinventou BSG, e é a maior coisa que já houve, assim reinventar coisas não é automaticamente horrível. Houve dez filmes de Jornada nas Estrelas, e eu diria que dois deles são acessíveis para platéias normais de cinema, outros dois são maravilhosos, e os outros seis são quase “inassistíveis”. Se JJ Abrams quer fazer seu novo filme de Jornada nas Estrelas diferente dos 80% dos filmes de Jornada nas Estrelas que não são tão bons, então está bem para mim. Não que minha opinião signifique alguma coisa, você compreende, mas reclamar sempre sobre coisas como essa é o preço de ser um geek, e eu não me arrependo de nada. NADA!”
