In a few months I could, I can change voice...
- Why though?
- Well, 'cause if I take hormones, mum!
- Do you really have to take these hormones?
- That was the decision...
- isn't that forcing things, Simo?
- Forcing what?
- This wanting to change voice ...
- How do you mean?
- I mean what you are,
how you were born as a girl, that's what.
With a stronger voice, more like a man's, would you feel better?
- I feel bad like this, I don't feel me,
do you realize I don't feel me?
- I do realize, but it's really upsetting,
come on, changing voice,
me hearing you with a different voice,
it hurts me...
Not with a beard...
- I'm not going to have it longer!
- Not with a big, gruff voice, no...
- It's not so I'll have a big, gruff voice mum,
it's that I feel bad,
it doesn't feel right to me being like this...
- Good Lord, that's the way you were born, that's the way you are...
- It's not just some silly whim!
- Yes, I realize. You're not having one of those sex operations too, then? No, eh?...
- It's my business what I'm having
- And then your breasts...
- Mum, please...
- ... your breasts...
- you're making me feel bad...
... no... ooh Lord!
- look, it's not yours they're taking off...
- It's a mutilation...
- Mum, it is a mutilation if you think I'm a girl, but if you think I'm a boy
it isn't a mutilation.
- But I don't...you aren't a boy
I'm not a boy to you but I'm telling you I feel like a boy, I've always felt like one...
FROM HEAD TO FOOT
My mother,
my father,
my sister at home
in a little town near Pisa.
It was the nineteen-sixties and my parents decided to call me Simona.
When I realized, I started to feel bad.
Whenever I went outside, I tried to convince everyone I was a boy.
I played football,
I was the leader of the gang,
I was the muddiest with the most cuts and bruises
I avoided girls like the plague because they were too silly.
It didn't work.
So I decided to tell my mother
thinking that if I managed to convince her,
she'd explain to other people.
That was only the beginning
of what I went through
During weddings, funerals
and all the other family ceremonies you can think of
there's always someone who brings up the subject:
Simona thinks she's Simone.
My response was to become a deviant.
started pinching a few thousand lira every day
from my mother's handbag
and I used them on the quiet to buy toblerone and chocolate bars
at the bar with the tobacconist's just down the road.
But when even the nosy woman in the tobacconist's
started asking me if I thought I was a boy,
and, even worse, asked me
in front of a crowd of punters,
I realized it was time
to invent a new strategy.
During that period
my favourite pastimes were
photography, doing badly at school
and getting shot of Simona.
I hardly went out at all,
I just did it to get to the town square
get the bus
and go straight off to school.
By this time I didn't care about other people's lives,
even on the bus
I used to concentrate on this wish that
came and went
to have a devastating road accident.
'SHOCK! HORROR!
Huge death toll as coach plunges off road in fatal crash.
Psychic powers of young schoolgirl from Pisa to blame?'
When my periods came along
the quality of my life got markedly worse.
Instead of studying I spent as long as possible immobile in bed
imagining I was someone else.
That wasn't enough.
So every evening
I used to tie my neck to the headboard
with as series of belts
hoping I'd make a false move
during the night.
Despite all of which,
when I was nineteen I managed to get
my school leaving certificate.
The reality was that Simona had a body,
Simone didn't.
Simona was recognized by everyone,
she even had a diploma.
Simone didn't, he only lived in my mind.
Faced with a radical choice
I decided Simona would prevail,
and I would lock up Simone
and hide him from myself
and especially from other people.
I enrolled at Bologna University.
Because I was living away from home my parents thought the safest place for me
was a girls' hall of residence run by nuns.
Just a month later I got kicked out
with the accusation
of being a disturbing influence
on the peace and quiet of the place.
I'd mix up courses in the refectory,
snacks would disappear
from the table of the mother superior,
refused to watch
the San Remo Festival, edition 38.
As soon as I was out of the nunnery
I moved into a place opposite there
with some girls.
I fell in love with one of them.
One day
I plucked up courage and told her
in a love letter I wrote.
Then I hid under the bedclothes
and waited for her to reply.
Unrequited love,
but in compensation
she pointed me to a place where,
she said,
people like me would meet.
Meanwhile I found the place and went there nearly every evening.
I just looked at it from far away
then went back home.
So in June 1988 to get into the Cassero at Porta Saragozza
H.Q. of the Gay Left Association
it took me four to six weeks.
Lovey... sweetie...
At last inside the Cassero I was swept away by a mass of men and women
going up and down all the time
between the ground floor
where there was dancing and the upper floors right up to the terrace.
Getting in meant getting squashed.
I realized there must be
some sort of ritual
I saw people talking saying hello or goodbye trying to find each other.
I felt paralyzed.
... mind your own business, we'll mind our own sex life, pope Wojtyla...
Catapulted into this new form of reality
my own equilibrium started changing.
With all this going out
I had conversations lasting over a minute
and I even had my first affairs
that lasted more or less the same time.
But I still felt out of it.
Other people no longer saw me as a little girl or as a sexless adolescent
but as a woman.
Between '89 and '90
there were occupations in universities everywhere in Italy
and in early '91
the United States declared war on Iraq.
That was a time when we really came together as students.
One day sitting in piazza Verdi
I saw Antonella.
Dark eyes, that way of picking out colours and wearing them
that I'd never have again.
The first time I really fell in love.
My relationship with Antonella was a point of arrival.
Sharing ideals with her gave me strength
Wanting to change the world.
We founded a lesbian-separatist
feminist group
where we tried out our political analyses.
I went off to the country with other women and moved into a house like a commune:
I relaxed going for walks,
I picked wild vegetables and herbs.
I became a naturist and a vegetarian while Antonella
in her revolutionary fervour
kept telling me
that to get rid of the patriarchal
concept of power
we had to open our relationship up
to free love.
I felt both the happiness of finding a woman to love
and anxiety,
so I got all worked up about finding definitive answers to things
and I was grabbing onto Antonella scared that it would soon be all over between us.
... it's no good... got it? When the time came I left.
On 7 October 1993
Antonella was still faithful to me
while I was corroded by jealousy
and was being unfaithful to her.
We split up.
Parliament in Italy should vote in a law... if we want to talk about civil unions,
if we want to talk about guarantees for people who decide freely to behave
sexually in a certain way, parliament in Italy must decide.
The European Parliament has already played its part with the powers it has...
As a reaction to the separation
I persuaded myself I was St.Francis
I threw off all traces of the past
I got rid of photos, clothes, records,
the things I was most fond of.
Then I turned into Jesus.
Not only did God exist but I was his son.
One day when divine inspiration was particuarly strong
I put up a rope in my room
and attempted to rid myself of my body
unsuccessfully.
Depressed I spent days and days tossing and turning in bed vegetating.
And with all this thinking
that I should do myself in
I realized I'd renounced myself,
Simone
what I'd always been
from head to foot.
These people pledged their support:
Massimo D'Alema, Fausto Bertinotti, Carlo Ripa di Meana, Francesco Rutelli,
Gloria Buffo, Pierluigi Bersani
...of human dignity, I tell you and ask you
to keep going together,
including those of you who have not had to suffer discrimation,
those of you who have never had to worry...
We don't have to fight for our right
to obtain civil rights,
we are born with these civil rights but society denies them to us,
society takes them away from us, society says...we're all different
and so we mustn't be a part of this let's call it caste society...
and I'd like... to extend an invitation
to our clergymen:
the church preaches tolerance
and solidarity,
We're asking the cardinal for solidarity.
We don't want tolerance in
any way, shape or form.
Bologna summer 1995
in the crowd at the second
National Gay Pride Day
I first heard Marcella Di Folco
leader of MIT, the Movement for the Identity of Transexuals
Thank you Marcella, thank you Roberta... and now we have...
When I left university
everything about my life
was totally temporary.
My body, money, work
In the years from
1995 to 1999
I dealt with the problem of identity that was easiest to solve. Social class.
... poor people sleep while the rich man can't sleep,
so much cash in the bank brings dreams to an end,
I started doing my first little jobs.
Picking asparagus and cherries
in the country.
Poultry vaccination week.
Unqualified assistance for the elderly,
suffering from everything from slight depression to Alzheimer's disease,
from paranoid schizophrenia
to total blindness.
But it was only thanks to emotional and financial help from Evelina
that I got out of black market labour
and worked as a printer
at the film restoration lab in town.
At last with the reassurance of my worker's pay packet
the time came to deal with the reality of my body.
I went to Valery Taccarelli a historic leader
of the liberation movement
and thanks to her I managed to ask
the MIT for help.
With treatment from a psychotherapist from the MIT health centre
I started taking my first male hormones
in 2001.
Where are you going to give it to me this time? You know I'm afraid,
I'm always afraid, nurse...
- no stand up straight eh...
- Ah I'm terrified... today you were wonderful
I met Porpora Marcasciano
a sociologist and vice-president
of the MIT.
And from her, and from Marcella Di Folco
I let myself learn things.
Splendid splendid
- You're not wrong
- Listen they have to cut her phone off...
- Maddi, Maddi!... We're making a film
- How are you? - Fine you?
- There's Marcella Di Folco in the back
- Ah Marcella hi
- Hello
- Turn off that camera...
There was no exact day,
but gradually I learned to put up with the idea of being a trans.
At night my dreams changed,
their subject matter.
New images burst in on the scene,
worrying... liberating.
I dreamt of cerimonies,
me in the past,
adult.
A sudden acceleration
waiting for the exact point where to stop
The exact point of my identity.
The exact point.
- Didn't feel it going in at all, did you...
- How do you know?
- Ah, because I saw how I did it.
I'll tell you that when I go out on my injection rounds...
- Now it does hurt you know...
but it's the liquid...
- Now it will hurt but you didn't feel
the needle
- How did you know?
- Ah yes I knew because I see how I do it,
it's so quick and anyway your skin's so soft, it's quick...
- We have to see when you have
to come back
- There, write it down...
If you 'd like to disinfect meantime...
So when...
May be used to treat: early male hypgonadism,
total, congenital
and acquired,
may be used in treatment of male menopause
when testosterone levels
are significantly below normal
May not be used in following cases:
hypersensitivity towards substance,
pregnancy, breastfeeding
Carcinoma of prostate,
lung and male teat.
I'll buy anything...
- I looked at the name too...
- Did you see... go there
if you happen to be there
- No, I'll have to go there...
- Or send your son...
do you realize?
Look, I've just opened it...
- Are you giving it to me?
- Of course!
Liver failure, nephrosis, swollen prostate with obsruction of uretha.
Should not be used in newborn or premature babies
Precautions:
injection must only be intramuscular
accidental injection into vein
may cause blood clot
Use with caution in patients
with heart failure,
hypertension, circulation problems,
kidney problems,
epilepsy, migraine and similar symptoms
Do not use unless absolutely necessary in prepubertal children
Ensure that in the elderly the product does not cause undesirable physical
nervous
and mental stimulation.
It'll take...
Because I'm off, I mean it's now or never...
another half hour, just half an hour...
Excuse me,
have you been in the operating theatre?
- No
- You don't know then?
- No
Who was it? They called me...Who is this? 339... Ah maybe it's Cathy...
Probably she called me...
Why's it going on so....
Can't get a line here...
Wonder who you're talking to. When you've finished I'm at home here in via Begatto
and I'm dowloading something on the computer and it's taking a bit
so I'll be busy at least half an hour.
I've done that text,
I'll get the bus and I'll come to your place. Anyway if you call me back
or I'll try and call you back later
we can arrange the time.
If you're hungry at dinnertime
and fancy eating,
I'll order a pizza and we'll do some work.
Kiss then...
Byeee...
Good evening, this is the doctor
I rang you at work yesterday,
I know you called me back
anyway, plenty of time to talk.
I just wanted to know how you were,
if your... if you still have your pills,
if you need some more...
Your tests are all right
so maybe we can talk, now on Saturday and Sunday I'm not here,
next week.
Bye.
Simons! It's Vittoria.
You call me when you like, if you like...Well, bye then...
Translation - English
En unos meses podría,
puede cambiarme la voz...
- Pero, ¿por qué?
- Y, ¡si tomo las hormonas, mamá!
- ¿Realmente tenés que tomar
estas hormonas?
- Esa decisión ya fue tomada...
- ¿No te parece que es forzar
las cosas, Simo?
- ¿Forzar qué?
- Esto de querer cambiar la voz...
- ¿A qué te referís?
- Me refiero a quien sos,
como naciste, como niña, a eso.
Con una voz más grave,
más de hombre, ¿te sentirás mejor?
- Estoy mal así, no soy yo mismo,
¿no te das cuenta que no soy yo?
- Me doy cuenta, pero es muy feo,
vamos, cambiar la voz,
tener que escucharte con otra voz,
me duele...
Con barba no...
- ¡No me la voy a dejar crecer!
- Con voz áspera y gruesa no...
- No es que la vaya a tener así,
es que me siento mal,
no me siento bien siendo así...
- Por Dios, así naciste, así sos..
- ¡No es sólo un capricho!
- Sí, ya sé. No te vas a hacer una
operaración de sexo también, ¿no?
- Es problema mío lo qué me haga.
- Y tus senos...
- Mamá, por favor...
- ... tus senos...
- me estás haciendo sentir mal...
... ¡ay, Dios, no!
decidieron llamarme Simona.
Cuando me di cuenta,
comencé a sentirme mal.
Siempre que salía intentaba
convencer a todos que era un varón
Jugaba al fútbol,
era el líder de la banda,
siempre embarrado,
lleno de lastimaduras y moretones
Evitaba a las niñas cual plaga
porque eran demasiado tontas.
No funcionó.
Entonces decidí contarle a mi mamá
Creyendo que si la convencía,
ella se lo explicaría a los demás.
Ese fue sólo el comienzo,
de todo lo que pasé.
En todo casamiento, funeral
y cualquier otro evento familiar
que se les ocurra
siempre alguien sacaba el tema:
Simona se cree que es Simone.
Mi reacción fue ser un rebelde.
A diario le sacaba
algunas liras a mi madre del bolso
y las usaba para comprar
Toblerones y barras de chocolate
en la tabaquería
al final de la calle.
Pero cuando hasta la
ruidosa señora de la tabaquería
comenzó a preguntarme si yo
me creía que era un varón,
y para peor me lo preguntó
frente a un grupo de clientes,
me di cuenta de que era hora
de crear una nueva estrategia.
En ese entonces mis pasatiempos
preferidos eran
la fotografía, las malas notas,
y deshacerme de Simona.
Prácticamente no salía,
solo iba a la plaza
me tomaba el ómnibus
e iba directo a la escuela.
Para ese entonces
no me importaba la vida de otros,
incluso en el ómnibus
me concentraba en un deseo
que me invadía por momentos
de tener un accidente fatal.
¡SHOCK! ¡HORROR!
Choque fatal de ómnibus deja
un saldo increíble de víctimas.
¿Habrá sido por los poderes
psíquicos de una chica de Pisa?
Cuando me venía el período
mi vida se volvía mucho peor.
En lugar de estudiar vivía
inmóvil en la cama
imaginándome ser otra persona.
Pero no era suficiente.
Entonces cada noche
solía atarme a la cabecera
usando varios cinturones
con la esperanza de hacer
algún movimiento en falso.
A pesar de todo esto,
a los diecinueve logré
terminar el liceo.
La realidad era que Simona
tenía un cuerpo, Simone no.
Simona era reconocida por todos,
hasta tenía un diploma.
Simone no, solo vivía en mi mente.
Frente a una elección radical
decidí que Simona prevalecería
e iba a encerrar a Simone
y esconderlo de mi mismo
y especialmente de los demás.
Me inscribí en la Universidad
de Bologna.
Como estaba viviendo lejos de casa
mis padres creyeron que lo mejor
sería una residencia para chicas
dirigida por monjas.
En tan solo un mes me echaron
acusándome de perturbar
la paz y tranquilidad del lugar.
Cambiaba los platos en el comedor,
la merienda desaparecía de la mesa
de la madre superiora,
me negué a mirar la trigésimo octava
edición del Festival de San Remo.
En cuanto abandoné el convento
me mudé a una casa enfrente
con unas chicas.
Me enamoré de una de ellas.
Un día,
junté coraje y se lo dije
en una carta de amor que escribí.
Luego me escondí bajo las sábanas
y esperé por su respuesta.
Amor no correspondido,
pero en compensación
me indicó un lugar donde,
me dijo, encontraría
gente como yo.
En tanto, encontré el lugar
e iba casi todas las noches.
Solo lo miraba de lejos
y después volvía a casa.
Entonces, en junio de 1988 entrar
al Casero en Porta Saragozza,
sede de la Asoc. Gay de Izquierda,
me tomó de cuatro a seis semanas.
Cariño...mi amor...
Una vez dentro del Casero
me vi abrumada por una masa que
subía y bajaba sin parar desde
el primer piso, donde bailaban,
hacia los pisos de más arriba
hasta llegar a la terraza.
Entrar era ir a aplastarse.
Pensaba que debía de ser
alguna clase de ritual.
Veía a la gente hablando
saludándose,
intentando encontrarse.
Me sentí paralizado.
....preocupate por tus cosas, es
nuestra vida sexual, papa Wojtyla
Catapultado en esta nueva realidad
mi equilibrio empezó a cambiar.
vi a Antonella.
Ojos oscuros y una forma de
combinar y usar los colores
que no volvería a ver.
Mi primer amor real.
Mi relación con Antonella fue
un punto de quiebre.
Compartir ideales me fortalecía,
el deseo de cambiar el mundo.
Fundamos un grupo lesbiano-
separatista-femenista
donde experimentábamos con
nuestro análisis político.
Me fui al campo con otras mujeres
y me mudé a una casa comunitaria:
Me distendía caminando, recogía
vegetales silvestres y hierbas.
Me hice naturista y vegetariana
mientras Antonella
en su fervor revolucionario
no paraba de decirme
que para deshacerse del concepto
patriarcal de poder
debíamos abrir nuestra
relación al amor libre.
Sentía tanto felicidad de haber
encontrado una mujer a la que amar
y ansiedad,
por lo que decidí encontrar
respuestas definitivas
y me aferraba a ella con miedo a
que pronto lo nuestro se terminara
...no está bien ¿entendiste?
Llegado el momento me fui.
El 7 de octubre de 1993
Antonella todavía me era fiel
mientras me carcomían los celos
y le era infiel a ella.
Nos separamos.
El Parlamento debe votar una ley,
para hablar de uniones civiles,
para hablar de garantías para
quienes deciden vivir con libertad
su sexualidad, el Parlamento
debe decidir.
El Parlamento Europeo con el poder
que tiene ya ha hecho lo suyo...
Ante la separación me convencí
de que era San Francisco
Me deshice de todo mi pasado
de las fotos, la ropa, los discos,
de aquellas cosas a las que me
sentía más apegado.
Luego me volqué a Jesús.
Dios no solo existía sino que
yo era su hijo.
Un buen día de particular
inspiración divina
colgué una cuerda en mi cuarto
e intenté liberarme de mi cuerpo,
no tuve éxito.
Deprimido, pasé días y días dando
vueltas en la cama, vegetando.
Y de tanto pensar en matarme,
me di cuenta de que había
renegado de mi ser
Simone
lo que siempre fui
de pies a cabeza.
Esta gente manifestó
su apoyo: Massimo D'Alema,
Fausto Bertinotti, Carlo Ripa
di Meana, Francesco Rutelli,
Gloria Buffo, Pierluigi Bersani
...por dignidad, te digo y pido
que sigamos juntos en el camino,
incluso a todos aquellos que
no sufren discriminación,
todos aquellos que nunca
tienen preocupaciones...
No tenemos que luchar por
nuestros derechos civiles,
nacemos con derechos civiles
pero la sociedad nos los niega
la sociedad nos los quita, dice...
que todos somos distintos
y no tenemos que ser parte de
esta, llamémosle, sociedad casta
y me gustaría... extender una
invitación a nuestro clero:
la Iglesia predica tolerancia
y solidaridad,
Le pedimos solidaridad al cardenal
No queremos tolerancia
de ningún tipo, modo o forma.
Bologna, verano de 1995.
En la multitud en el segundo
Día Nacional del Orgullo Gay
Escuché por primera vez a
Marcella Di Folco,
líder del MIT, el Movimiento de
Identidad de Transexuales
Gracias Marcella, gracias Roberta...
y ahora tenemos...
Cuando me gradué de la Universidad
todo en mi vida
era precario.
Mi cuerpo, mi dinero, mi trabajo.
Entre 1995 y 1999
Encaré el problema de identidad
más simple. La clase social.
...la gente pobre puede dormir
mientras que la gente rica no
tanta plata en el banco termina con
los sueños.
Empecé a hacer mis
primeros trabajitos.
Recogía espárragos y cerezas
en el campo.
La semana de la vacunación
de las aves de corral.
Asistencia no calificada para
los ancianos,
que sufrían de todo, desde leve
depresión hasta Alzheimer,
desde esquizofrenia-paranoica
hasta la ceguera total.
Pero solo gracias a la ayuda
emocional y financiera de Evelina
es que deje de trabajar en negro
y empecé a trabajar como impresor
en el laboratorio de restauración
de películas de la ciudad.
Al tener un seguro social
llegó el momento de enfrentar
la realidad de mi cuerpo.
Fui a lo de Valery Taccarelli,
líder del movimiento de liberación
Y gracias a ella logré pedirle
ayuda al MIT.
Con ayuda de un psicoterapeuta
del centro de salud del MIT
Empecé a tomar mis primeras
hormonas masculinas en el 2001
¿Esta vez, dónde me la vas a dar?
Ya sabés que estoy asustado,
Siempre me asusto, enfermera...
-No te pares derecho eh...
-Ah estoy muerto del susto...hoy
estuviste espectacular
Conocí a Porpora Marcasciano
una socióloga y vicepresidenta
del MIT.
Y de ella, y de Marcella Di Folco
aprendí mucho.
Espléndido, espléndido.
-Tenés razón
Escúchame le tienen
que cortar el teléfono...
-¡Maddi, Maddi!... Estamos haciendo
una película
-¿Cómo andas? -¿Bien y vos?
-Está Marcella Di Folco atrás
-Ah hola, Marcella
-Hola
-Apagá la cámara...
No hubo un día exacto,
pero gradualmente aprendí a
soportar la idea de ser un trans.
En la noche mis sueños cambiaban,
cambiaban de tema.
Imágenes nuevas se me aparecían,
preocupantes...liberadoras.
Soñaba con ceremonias,
yo en el pasado,
yo como adulto.
Una aceleración brusca.
Esperaba el momento exacto
para detenerse.
El punto exacto de mi identidad.
El punto exacto.
-Ni la sentíste esta vez ¿no?...
-¿Cómo sabés?
-Ah porque vi cómo lo hice.
Te digo que cuando salgo a mi
ronda de inyecciones...
-Ahora sí lastiman...
pero es el líquido...
-Ahora te va a doler
pero no vas a sentir la aguja
-¿Cómo sabías?
-Yo sabía porque veo cómo lo hago
es tan rápido y tu piel
es tan suave, es rápido...
-Tenemos que ver cuándo tenés
que volver
-Ahí, anotalo...
Si querés mientras tanto
te desinfectamos...
Entonces cuando…

este? 339… Ah, debe de ser Cathy…
Probablemente me llamó…
Chau…
Buenas tardes, este es el doctor
te llamé al trabajo ayer,
Sé que me volviste a llamar,
igual, hay tiempo para hablar.
Sólo quería saber cómo estabas,
si… todavía tenés tus pastillas,
si necesitas algunas más…
Tus análisis están bien
así que capaz podemos hablar, ahora
el sábado y el domingo no estoy,
la semana que viene.
Chau.
¡Simons! Soy Vittoria.
Llamáme cuando quieras, si
querés… Bueno, chau entonces…

Trascription of English subtitles
In a few months I could, I can change voice...
- Why though?
- Well, 'cause if I take hormones, mum!
- Do you really have to take these hormones?
- That was the decision...
- isn't that forcing things, Simo?
- Forcing what?
- This wanting to change voice ...
- How do you mean?
- I mean what you are,
how you were born as a girl, that's what.
With a stronger voice, more like a man's, would you feel better?
- I feel bad like this, I don't feel me,
do you realize I don't feel me?
- I do realize, but it's really upsetting,
come on, changing voice,
me hearing you with a different voice,
it hurts me...
Not with a beard...
- I'm not going to have it longer!
- Not with a big, gruff voice, no...
- It's not so I'll have a big, gruff voice mum,
it's that I feel bad,
it doesn't feel right to me being like this...
- Good Lord, that's the way you were born, that's the way you are...
- It's not just some silly whim!
- Yes, I realize. You're not having one of those sex operations too, then? No, eh?...
- It's my business what I'm having
- And then your breasts...
- Mum, please...
- ... your breasts...
- you're making me feel bad...
... no... ooh Lord!
- look, it's not yours they're taking off...
- It's a mutilation...
- Mum, it is a mutilation if you think I'm a girl, but if you think I'm a boy
it isn't a mutilation.
- But I don't...you aren't a boy
I'm not a boy to you but I'm telling you I feel like a boy, I've always felt like one...
FROM HEAD TO FOOT
My mother,
my father,
my sister at home
in a little town near Pisa.
It was the nineteen-sixties and my parents decided to call me Simona.
When I realized, I started to feel bad.
Whenever I went outside, I tried to convince everyone I was a boy.
I played football,
I was the leader of the gang,
I was the muddiest with the most cuts and bruises
I avoided girls like the plague because they were too silly.
It didn't work.
So I decided to tell my mother
thinking that if I managed to convince her,
she'd explain to other people.
That was only the beginning
of what I went through
During weddings, funerals
and all the other family ceremonies you can think of
there's always someone who brings up the subject:
Simona thinks she's Simone.
My response was to become a deviant.
started pinching a few thousand lira every day
from my mother's handbag
and I used them on the quiet to buy toblerone and chocolate bars
at the bar with the tobacconist's just down the road.
But when even the nosy woman in the tobacconist's
started asking me if I thought I was a boy,
and, even worse, asked me
in front of a crowd of punters,
I realized it was time
to invent a new strategy.
During that period
my favourite pastimes were
photography, doing badly at school
and getting shot of Simona.
I hardly went out at all,
I just did it to get to the town square
get the bus
and go straight off to school.
By this time I didn't care about other people's lives,
even on the bus
I used to concentrate on this wish that
came and went
to have a devastating road accident.
'SHOCK! HORROR!
Huge death toll as coach plunges off road in fatal crash.
Psychic powers of young schoolgirl from Pisa to blame?'
When my periods came along
the quality of my life got markedly worse.
Instead of studying I spent as long as possible immobile in bed
imagining I was someone else.
That wasn't enough.
So every evening
I used to tie my neck to the headboard
with as series of belts
hoping I'd make a false move
during the night.
Despite all of which,
when I was nineteen I managed to get
my school leaving certificate.
The reality was that Simona had a body,
Simone didn't.
Simona was recognized by everyone,
she even had a diploma.
Simone didn't, he only lived in my mind.
Faced with a radical choice
I decided Simona would prevail,
and I would lock up Simone
and hide him from myself
and especially from other people.
I enrolled at Bologna University.
Because I was living away from home my parents thought the safest place for me
was a girls' hall of residence run by nuns.
Just a month later I got kicked out
with the accusation
of being a disturbing influence
on the peace and quiet of the place.
I'd mix up courses in the refectory,
snacks would disappear
from the table of the mother superior,
refused to watch
the San Remo Festival, edition 38.
As soon as I was out of the nunnery
I moved into a place opposite there
with some girls.
I fell in love with one of them.
One day
I plucked up courage and told her
in a love letter I wrote.
Then I hid under the bedclothes
and waited for her to reply.
Unrequited love,
but in compensation
she pointed me to a place where,
she said,
people like me would meet.
Meanwhile I found the place and went there nearly every evening.
I just looked at it from far away
then went back home.
So in June 1988 to get into the Cassero at Porta Saragozza
H.Q. of the Gay Left Association
it took me four to six weeks.
Lovey... sweetie...
At last inside the Cassero I was swept away by a mass of men and women
going up and down all the time
between the ground floor
where there was dancing and the upper floors right up to the terrace.
Getting in meant getting squashed.
I realized there must be
some sort of ritual
I saw people talking saying hello or goodbye trying to find each other.
I felt paralyzed.
... mind your own business, we'll mind our own sex life, pope Wojtyla...
Catapulted into this new form of reality
my own equilibrium started changing.
With all this going out
I had conversations lasting over a minute
and I even had my first affairs
that lasted more or less the same time.
But I still felt out of it.
Other people no longer saw me as a little girl or as a sexless adolescent
but as a woman.
Between '89 and '90
there were occupations in universities everywhere in Italy
and in early '91
the United States declared war on Iraq.
That was a time when we really came together as students.
One day sitting in piazza Verdi
I saw Antonella.
Dark eyes, that way of picking out colours and wearing them
that I'd never have again.
The first time I really fell in love.
My relationship with Antonella was a point of arrival.
Sharing ideals with her gave me strength
Wanting to change the world.
We founded a lesbian-separatist
feminist group
where we tried out our political analyses.
I went off to the country with other women and moved into a house like a commune:
I relaxed going for walks,
I picked wild vegetables and herbs.
I became a naturist and a vegetarian while Antonella
in her revolutionary fervour
kept telling me
that to get rid of the patriarchal
concept of power
we had to open our relationship up
to free love.
I felt both the happiness of finding a woman to love
and anxiety,
so I got all worked up about finding definitive answers to things
and I was grabbing onto Antonella scared that it would soon be all over between us.
... it's no good... got it? When the time came I left.
On 7 October 1993
Antonella was still faithful to me
while I was corroded by jealousy
and was being unfaithful to her.
We split up.
Parliament in Italy should vote in a law... if we want to talk about civil unions,
if we want to talk about guarantees for people who decide freely to behave
sexually in a certain way, parliament in Italy must decide.
The European Parliament has already played its part with the powers it has...
As a reaction to the separation
I persuaded myself I was St.Francis
I threw off all traces of the past
I got rid of photos, clothes, records,
the things I was most fond of.
Then I turned into Jesus.
Not only did God exist but I was his son.
One day when divine inspiration was particuarly strong
I put up a rope in my room
and attempted to rid myself of my body
unsuccessfully.
Depressed I spent days and days tossing and turning in bed vegetating.
And with all this thinking
that I should do myself in
I realized I'd renounced myself,
Simone
what I'd always been
from head to foot.
These people pledged their support:
Massimo D'Alema, Fausto Bertinotti, Carlo Ripa di Meana, Francesco Rutelli,
Gloria Buffo, Pierluigi Bersani
...of human dignity, I tell you and ask you
to keep going together,
including those of you who have not had to suffer discrimation,
those of you who have never had to worry...
We don't have to fight for our right
to obtain civil rights,
we are born with these civil rights but society denies them to us,
society takes them away from us, society says...we're all different
and so we mustn't be a part of this let's call it caste society...
and I'd like... to extend an invitation
to our clergymen:
the church preaches tolerance
and solidarity,
We're asking the cardinal for solidarity.
We don't want tolerance in
any way, shape or form.
Bologna summer 1995
in the crowd at the second
National Gay Pride Day
I first heard Marcella Di Folco
leader of MIT, the Movement for the Identity of Transexuals
Thank you Marcella, thank you Roberta... and now we have...
When I left university
everything about my life
was totally temporary.
My body, money, work
In the years from
1995 to 1999
I dealt with the problem of identity that was easiest to solve. Social class.
... poor people sleep while the rich man can't sleep,
so much cash in the bank brings dreams to an end,
I started doing my first little jobs.
Picking asparagus and cherries
in the country.
Poultry vaccination week.
Unqualified assistance for the elderly,
suffering from everything from slight depression to Alzheimer's disease,
from paranoid schizophrenia
to total blindness.
But it was only thanks to emotional and financial help from Evelina
that I got out of black market labour
and worked as a printer
at the film restoration lab in town.
At last with the reassurance of my worker's pay packet
the time came to deal with the reality of my body.
I went to Valery Taccarelli a historic leader
of the liberation movement
and thanks to her I managed to ask
the MIT for help.
With treatment from a psychotherapist from the MIT health centre
I started taking my first male hormones
in 2001.
Where are you going to give it to me this time? You know I'm afraid,
I'm always afraid, nurse...
- no stand up straight eh...
- Ah I'm terrified... today you were wonderful
I met Porpora Marcasciano
a sociologist and vice-president
of the MIT.
And from her, and from Marcella Di Folco
I let myself learn things.
Splendid splendid
- You're not wrong
- Listen they have to cut her phone off...
- Maddi, Maddi!... We're making a film
- How are you? - Fine you?
- There's Marcella Di Folco in the back
- Ah Marcella hi
- Hello
- Turn off that camera...
There was no exact day,
but gradually I learned to put up with the idea of being a trans.
At night my dreams changed,
their subject matter.
New images burst in on the scene,
worrying... liberating.
I dreamt of cerimonies,
me in the past,
adult.
A sudden acceleration
waiting for the exact point where to stop
The exact point of my identity.
The exact point.
- Didn't feel it going in at all, did you...
- How do you know?
- Ah, because I saw how I did it.
I'll tell you that when I go out on my injection rounds...
- Now it does hurt you know...
but it's the liquid...
- Now it will hurt but you didn't feel
the needle
- How did you know?
- Ah yes I knew because I see how I do it,
it's so quick and anyway your skin's so soft, it's quick...
- We have to see when you have
to come back
- There, write it down...
If you 'd like to disinfect meantime...
So when...
May be used to treat: early male hypgonadism,
total, congenital
and acquired,
may be used in treatment of male menopause
when testosterone levels
are significantly below normal
May not be used in following cases:
hypersensitivity towards substance,
pregnancy, breastfeeding
Carcinoma of prostate,
lung and male teat.
I'll buy anything...
- I looked at the name too...
- Did you see... go there
if you happen to be there
- No, I'll have to go there...
- Or send your son...
do you realize?
Look, I've just opened it...
- Are you giving it to me?
- Of course!
Liver failure, nephrosis, swollen prostate with obsruction of uretha.
Should not be used in newborn or premature babies
Precautions:
injection must only be intramuscular
accidental injection into vein
may cause blood clot
Use with caution in patients
with heart failure,
hypertension, circulation problems,
kidney problems,
epilepsy, migraine and similar symptoms
Do not use unless absolutely necessary in prepubertal children
Ensure that in the elderly the product does not cause undesirable physical
nervous
and mental stimulation.
It'll take...
Because I'm off, I mean it's now or never...
another half hour, just half an hour...
Excuse me,
have you been in the operating theatre?
- No
- You don't know then?
- No
Who was it? They called me...Who is this? 339... Ah maybe it's Cathy...
Probably she called me...
Why's it going on so....
Can't get a line here...
Wonder who you're talking to. When you've finished I'm at home here in via Begatto
and I'm dowloading something on the computer and it's taking a bit
so I'll be busy at least half an hour.
I've done that text,
I'll get the bus and I'll come to your place. Anyway if you call me back
or I'll try and call you back later
we can arrange the time.
If you're hungry at dinnertime
and fancy eating,
I'll order a pizza and we'll do some work.
Kiss then...
Byeee...
Good evening, this is the doctor
I rang you at work yesterday,
I know you called me back
anyway, plenty of time to talk.
I just wanted to know how you were,
if your... if you still have your pills,
if you need some more...
Your tests are all right
so maybe we can talk, now on Saturday and Sunday I'm not here,
next week.
Bye.
Simons! It's Vittoria.
You call me when you like, if you like...Well, bye then...
Translation - Spanish
En unos meses podría,
puede cambiarme la voz...
- Pero, ¿por qué?
- Y, ¡si tomo las hormonas, mamá!
- ¿Realmente tenés que tomar
estas hormonas?
- Esa decisión ya fue tomada...
- ¿No te parece que es forzar
las cosas, Simo?
- ¿Forzar qué?
- Esto de querer cambiar la voz...
- ¿A qué te referís?
- Me refiero a quien sos,
como naciste, como niña, a eso.
Con una voz más grave,
más de hombre, ¿te sentirás mejor?
- Estoy mal así, no soy yo mismo,
¿no te das cuenta que no soy yo?
- Me doy cuenta, pero es muy feo,
vamos, cambiar la voz,
tener que escucharte con otra voz,
me duele...
Con barba no...
- ¡No me la voy a dejar crecer!
- Con voz áspera y gruesa no...
- No es que la vaya a tener así,
es que me siento mal,
no me siento bien siendo así...
- Por Dios, así naciste, así sos..
- ¡No es sólo un capricho!
- Sí, ya sé. No te vas a hacer una
operaración de sexo también, ¿no?
- Es problema mío lo qué me haga.
- Y tus senos...
- Mamá, por favor...
- ... tus senos...
- me estás haciendo sentir mal...
... ¡ay, Dios, no!
decidieron llamarme Simona.
Cuando me di cuenta,
comencé a sentirme mal.
Siempre que salía intentaba
convencer a todos que era un varón
Jugaba al fútbol,
era el líder de la banda,
siempre embarrado,
lleno de lastimaduras y moretones
Evitaba a las niñas cual plaga
porque eran demasiado tontas.
No funcionó.
Entonces decidí contarle a mi mamá
Creyendo que si la convencía,
ella se lo explicaría a los demás.
Ese fue sólo el comienzo,
de todo lo que pasé.
En todo casamiento, funeral
y cualquier otro evento familiar
que se les ocurra
siempre alguien sacaba el tema:
Simona se cree que es Simone.
Mi reacción fue ser un rebelde.
A diario le sacaba
algunas liras a mi madre del bolso
y las usaba para comprar
Toblerones y barras de chocolate
en la tabaquería
al final de la calle.
Pero cuando hasta la
ruidosa señora de la tabaquería
comenzó a preguntarme si yo
me creía que era un varón,
y para peor me lo preguntó
frente a un grupo de clientes,
me di cuenta de que era hora
de crear una nueva estrategia.
En ese entonces mis pasatiempos
preferidos eran
la fotografía, las malas notas,
y deshacerme de Simona.
Prácticamente no salía,
solo iba a la plaza
me tomaba el ómnibus
e iba directo a la escuela.
Para ese entonces
no me importaba la vida de otros,
incluso en el ómnibus
me concentraba en un deseo
que me invadía por momentos
de tener un accidente fatal.
¡SHOCK! ¡HORROR!
Choque fatal de ómnibus deja
un saldo increíble de víctimas.
¿Habrá sido por los poderes
psíquicos de una chica de Pisa?
Cuando me venía el período
mi vida se volvía mucho peor.
En lugar de estudiar vivía
inmóvil en la cama
imaginándome ser otra persona.
Pero no era suficiente.
Entonces cada noche
solía atarme a la cabecera
usando varios cinturones
con la esperanza de hacer
algún movimiento en falso.
A pesar de todo esto,
a los diecinueve logré
terminar el liceo.
La realidad era que Simona
tenía un cuerpo, Simone no.
Simona era reconocida por todos,
hasta tenía un diploma.
Simone no, solo vivía en mi mente.
Frente a una elección radical
decidí que Simona prevalecería
e iba a encerrar a Simone
y esconderlo de mi mismo
y especialmente de los demás.
Me inscribí en la Universidad
de Bologna.
Como estaba viviendo lejos de casa
mis padres creyeron que lo mejor
sería una residencia para chicas
dirigida por monjas.
En tan solo un mes me echaron
acusándome de perturbar
la paz y tranquilidad del lugar.
Cambiaba los platos en el comedor,
la merienda desaparecía de la mesa
de la madre superiora,
me negué a mirar la trigésimo octava
edición del Festival de San Remo.
En cuanto abandoné el convento
me mudé a una casa enfrente
con unas chicas.
Me enamoré de una de ellas.
Un día,
junté coraje y se lo dije
en una carta de amor que escribí.
Luego me escondí bajo las sábanas
y esperé por su respuesta.
Amor no correspondido,
pero en compensación
me indicó un lugar donde,
me dijo, encontraría
gente como yo.
En tanto, encontré el lugar
e iba casi todas las noches.
Solo lo miraba de lejos
y después volvía a casa.
Entonces, en junio de 1988 entrar
al Casero en Porta Saragozza,
sede de la Asoc. Gay de Izquierda,
me tomó de cuatro a seis semanas.
Cariño...mi amor...
Una vez dentro del Casero
me vi abrumada por una masa que
subía y bajaba sin parar desde
el primer piso, donde bailaban,
hacia los pisos de más arriba
hasta llegar a la terraza.
Entrar era ir a aplastarse.
Pensaba que debía de ser
alguna clase de ritual.
Veía a la gente hablando
saludándose,
intentando encontrarse.
Me sentí paralizado.
....preocupate por tus cosas, es
nuestra vida sexual, papa Wojtyla
Catapultado en esta nueva realidad
mi equilibrio empezó a cambiar.
vi a Antonella.
Ojos oscuros y una forma de
combinar y usar los colores
que no volvería a ver.
Mi primer amor real.
Mi relación con Antonella fue
un punto de quiebre.
Compartir ideales me fortalecía,
el deseo de cambiar el mundo.
Fundamos un grupo lesbiano-
separatista-femenista
donde experimentábamos con
nuestro análisis político.
Me fui al campo con otras mujeres
y me mudé a una casa comunitaria:
Me distendía caminando, recogía
vegetales silvestres y hierbas.
Me hice naturista y vegetariana
mientras Antonella
en su fervor revolucionario
no paraba de decirme
que para deshacerse del concepto
patriarcal de poder
debíamos abrir nuestra
relación al amor libre.
Sentía tanto felicidad de haber
encontrado una mujer a la que amar
y ansiedad,
por lo que decidí encontrar
respuestas definitivas
y me aferraba a ella con miedo a
que pronto lo nuestro se terminara
...no está bien ¿entendiste?
Llegado el momento me fui.
El 7 de octubre de 1993
Antonella todavía me era fiel
mientras me carcomían los celos
y le era infiel a ella.
Nos separamos.
El Parlamento debe votar una ley,
para hablar de uniones civiles,
para hablar de garantías para
quienes deciden vivir con libertad
su sexualidad, el Parlamento
debe decidir.
El Parlamento Europeo con el poder
que tiene ya ha hecho lo suyo...
Ante la separación me convencí
de que era San Francisco
Me deshice de todo mi pasado
de las fotos, la ropa, los discos,
de aquellas cosas a las que me
sentía más apegado.
Luego me volqué a Jesús.
Dios no solo existía sino que
yo era su hijo.
Un buen día de particular
inspiración divina
colgué una cuerda en mi cuarto
e intenté liberarme de mi cuerpo,
no tuve éxito.
Deprimido, pasé días y días dando
vueltas en la cama, vegetando.
Y de tanto pensar en matarme,
me di cuenta de que había
renegado de mi ser
Simone
lo que siempre fui
de pies a cabeza.
Esta gente manifestó
su apoyo: Massimo D'Alema,
Fausto Bertinotti, Carlo Ripa
di Meana, Francesco Rutelli,
Gloria Buffo, Pierluigi Bersani
...por dignidad, te digo y pido
que sigamos juntos en el camino,
incluso a todos aquellos que
no sufren discriminación,
todos aquellos que nunca
tienen preocupaciones...
No tenemos que luchar por
nuestros derechos civiles,
nacemos con derechos civiles
pero la sociedad nos los niega
la sociedad nos los quita, dice...
que todos somos distintos
y no tenemos que ser parte de
esta, llamémosle, sociedad casta
y me gustaría... extender una
invitación a nuestro clero:
la Iglesia predica tolerancia
y solidaridad,
Le pedimos solidaridad al cardenal
No queremos tolerancia
de ningún tipo, modo o forma.
Bologna, verano de 1995.
En la multitud en el segundo
Día Nacional del Orgullo Gay
Escuché por primera vez a
Marcella Di Folco,
líder del MIT, el Movimiento de
Identidad de Transexuales
Gracias Marcella, gracias Roberta...
y ahora tenemos...
Cuando me gradué de la Universidad
todo en mi vida
era precario.
Mi cuerpo, mi dinero, mi trabajo.
Entre 1995 y 1999
Encaré el problema de identidad
más simple. La clase social.
...la gente pobre puede dormir
mientras que la gente rica no
tanta plata en el banco termina con
los sueños.
Empecé a hacer mis
primeros trabajitos.
Recogía espárragos y cerezas
en el campo.
La semana de la vacunación
de las aves de corral.
Asistencia no calificada para
los ancianos,
que sufrían de todo, desde leve
depresión hasta Alzheimer,
desde esquizofrenia-paranoica
hasta la ceguera total.
Pero solo gracias a la ayuda
emocional y financiera de Evelina
es que deje de trabajar en negro
y empecé a trabajar como impresor
en el laboratorio de restauración
de películas de la ciudad.
Al tener un seguro social
llegó el momento de enfrentar
la realidad de mi cuerpo.
Fui a lo de Valery Taccarelli,
líder del movimiento de liberación
Y gracias a ella logré pedirle
ayuda al MIT.
Con ayuda de un psicoterapeuta
del centro de salud del MIT
Empecé a tomar mis primeras
hormonas masculinas en el 2001
¿Esta vez, dónde me la vas a dar?
Ya sabés que estoy asustado,
Siempre me asusto, enfermera...
-No te pares derecho eh...
-Ah estoy muerto del susto...hoy
estuviste espectacular
Conocí a Porpora Marcasciano
una socióloga y vicepresidenta
del MIT.
Y de ella, y de Marcella Di Folco
aprendí mucho.
Espléndido, espléndido.
-Tenés razón
Escúchame le tienen
que cortar el teléfono...
-¡Maddi, Maddi!... Estamos haciendo
una película
-¿Cómo andas? -¿Bien y vos?
-Está Marcella Di Folco atrás
-Ah hola, Marcella
-Hola
-Apagá la cámara...
No hubo un día exacto,
pero gradualmente aprendí a
soportar la idea de ser un trans.
En la noche mis sueños cambiaban,
cambiaban de tema.
Imágenes nuevas se me aparecían,
preocupantes...liberadoras.
Soñaba con ceremonias,
yo en el pasado,
yo como adulto.
Una aceleración brusca.
Esperaba el momento exacto
para detenerse.
El punto exacto de mi identidad.
El punto exacto.
-Ni la sentíste esta vez ¿no?...
-¿Cómo sabés?
-Ah porque vi cómo lo hice.
Te digo que cuando salgo a mi
ronda de inyecciones...
-Ahora sí lastiman...
pero es el líquido...
-Ahora te va a doler
pero no vas a sentir la aguja
-¿Cómo sabías?
-Yo sabía porque veo cómo lo hago
es tan rápido y tu piel
es tan suave, es rápido...
-Tenemos que ver cuándo tenés
que volver
-Ahí, anotalo...
Si querés mientras tanto
te desinfectamos...
Entonces cuando…

¿estuvo en la sala de operaciones?
-No
-¿Entonces no sabe nada?
-No
¿Quién era? Me llamaron… ¿Quién es
este? 339… Ah, debe de ser Cathy…
Probablemente me llamó…
Chau…
Buenas tardes, este es el doctor
te llamé al trabajo ayer,
Sé que me volviste a llamar,
igual, hay tiempo para hablar.
Sólo quería saber cómo estabas,
si… todavía tenés tus pastillas,
si necesitas algunas más…
Tus análisis están bien
así que capaz podemos hablar, ahora
el sábado y el domingo no estoy,
la semana que viene.
Chau.
¡Simons! Soy Vittoria.
Llamáme cuando quieras, si
querés… Bueno, chau entonces…
