Source text - Spanish La Apostolicidad de la Opción por los pobres
Quiero comenzar con una experiencia que fue recurrente a muchos hermanos y hermanas que hoy servimos a la Iglesia en México, vivida en los años entre 1985-1998: Roberto Oliveros, eminente
teólogo y decano del Colegio Máximo de la Compañía de Jesús se presenta solemne, agudo y cercano en el aula para iniciar el curso de Cristología. Después de las indicaciones pertinentes y presentar el itinerario de la reflexión, ya para terminar, con dos libros en las manos
nos dice: «nuestros principales compañeros de camino a lo largo de este curso serán estos dos hermanos: Juan Luis Segundo y Jon Sobrino».
Particularmente ese año -1996- murió Juan Luis y Roberto dejando caer sobre la mesa el libro de Segundo, añadió: «pero acaba de fallecer Juan
Luis y solamente quedamos Jon y nosotros».
Comenzó así un proceso de familiarizarnos con el estilo de Sobrino: sistemático, a veces redundante y lleno de expresiones provocadoras y lapidarias. Un camino de reconstrucción de la fe que nos llevó
a amar más al Padre Dios, presencia cercana y bondadosa; a Jesús y la centralidad del Reino de Dios y su acercamiento salvífico; la presencia
sacramental y misericordiosa de la Iglesia llamada a ser samaritana para los excluidos de este mundo. La reflexión se fue ampliando más allá
del aula y para muchos se volvió apasionamiento al leer «El Principio Misericordia» (Santander, 1992) y que tuvo como corolario «La Fe en
Jesucristo» (San Salvador, 1999), que nos llevó a entender y vivir la teología como intellectus amoris, una dar razón de lo que amamos y que en el caso de Sobrino se hace más explícitamente como intellectus misericordiae, iustitiae, liberationis: una razón que misericordiosamente da razón de la justicia y de las posibilidades de liberación de la humanidad.
La Cristología de Jon Sobrino es parte ya del patrimonio de la Iglesia, en especial de la Latinoamericana de esa tradición teológica calificada por Juan Pablo II como «oportuna, útil y necesaria» en conexión con la «Tradición apostólica y continuada con los grandes padres y
doctores, con el Magisterio ordinario y extraordinario».
Hoy, reconociéndome indirectamente como alumno suyo, recojo la invitación que hace la «Notificación» dirigida a Jon Sobrino a profundizar y aclarar algunos elementos presentes en su trabajo, cosa que ya hemos hecho en el dialogo fraterno, en el aula y delante del Señor en el Sagrario a lo largo de los años.
Los puntos señalados en la notificación lejos de verlos como un anatema sit los he visto más como una invitación a profundizar en la Cristología desde una perspectiva latinoamericana, para llevarla más
adelante en su razón de ser.
Son varios los puntos que toca la Notificación, todos ellos aclarables. Opto sólo por uno, el del apartado primero, «Presupuestos Metodológicos», el cual es importante, pues en él se indican algunas
interrogantes sobre el método teológico de la Cristología de Sobrino. Lo divide en dos partes:
• Los pobres como lugar teológico y principio de interpretación (n.2)
• El valor normativo de los Concilios Cristològicos (n.3)
El número 2 comienza citando la obra de Jon Sobrino donde afirma que desde la perspectiva latinoamericana, los pobres son un lugar privilegiado y principio de interpretación para hacer teología, en el siguiente párrafo valora el lugar teológico de los pobres, el cual precisa tiene que estar (como cualquier lugar teológico) inserto en la Fe de la Iglesia. Para concluir con una frase profundamente inquietante: «El lugar eclesial de la cristología no puede ser la Iglesia de los pobres sino la fe apostólica transmitida por la Iglesia a todas las generaciones».
Digo que es inquietante porque contrapone fe apostólica con Iglesia de los pobres, elemento que creo en primer lugar nadie de los que hacemos teología católica en América Latina se siente identificado con ese sentido primario que pudiera tener esa frase.
Esto pide profundizar dos cosas: Qué es la fe Apostólica y desde esa perspectiva verificar si la construcción de una Iglesia de los pobres
va en su contra.
Comenzaremos siguiendo de cerca el comentario que hizo Benedicto XVI en la audiencia del 28 de marzo de 2007, al presentar a San Ireneo de
Lyón, uno de los grandes teólogos y pastores de la cristiandad.
Comenta el Papa que en el centro de su pensamiento está la cuestión de la «regla de la fe» y de su transmisión. Para Ireneo la «regla de
la fe» coincide en la práctica con el «Credo» de los apóstoles, y nos da la clave para interpretar el Evangelio, para interpretar el Credo a la luz
del Evangelio. El símbolo apostólico, que es una especie de síntesis del Evangelio, nos ayuda a comprender lo que quiere decir, la manera en
que tenemos que leer el mismo Evangelio.
De hecho, el Evangelio predicado por Ireneo es el que recibió de Policarpo, obispo de Esmirna, y el Evangelio de Policarpo se remonta al apóstol Juan, de quien Policarpo era discípulo. De este modo, la verdadera enseñanza no es la inventada por los intelectuales, superando la fe sencilla de la Iglesia. El verdadero Evangelio es el discernido por los
que presiden a la comunidad que lo han recibido, no solamente como conocimiento, sino como fe vivida en comunidad, gracias a una cadena
ininterrumpida que procede de los apóstoles. La fe vivida y confesadapúblicamente por la Iglesia es la fe común de todos, Sólo es apostólica esta fe, que procede de los apóstoles, es decir, de Jesús y de Dios.
Ireneo se preocupa por ilustrar el concepto genuino de Tradición apostólica, que podemos resumir en tres puntos:
• La Tradición apostólica es «pública», común, no privada o secreta. Tiene un carácter comunitario, no es lo que se me ocurre, sino que pasa por el filtro de la comunidad eclesial en el tiempo y en el espacio, donde el obispo es la cabeza del discernimiento. Para Ireneo no hay duda alguna de que el contenido de la fe transmitida por la Iglesia es el recibido de los apóstoles y de Jesús, el Hijo de Dios. No hay otra enseñanza.
• La Tradición apostólica es «única». Mientras el gnosticismo se divide en numerosas sectas, la Tradición de la Iglesia es única en sus contenidos fundamentales que, como hemos visto, Ireneo llama «regula fidei» o «veritatis»: y dado que es única, crea unidad a través de los pueblos, a través de las diferentes culturas, a través de pueblos diferentes; es un contenido común como la verdad, a pesar de las diferentes lenguas y culturas. Esa unidad es lo que Jon Sobrino llama como lo meta-paradigmático de la Cristología en la introducción de la «Fe en Jesucristo».
• Por último, la Tradición apostólica es «pneumática», es decir, espiritual, guiada por el Espíritu Santo. No se trata de una transmisión confiada a la capacidad de los hombres más o menos instruidos, sino al Espíritu de Dios, que garantiza la fidelidad de la transmisión de la fe. Esta es la «vida» de la Iglesia, que la hace siempre joven, es decir, fecunda de muchos carismas. Iglesia y Espíritu para Ireneo son inseparables. «Donde está la Iglesia, allí está el Espíritu de Dios; y donde está el Espíritu de Dios, allí está la Iglesia y toda gracia»
Por tanto la fe de la Iglesia debe ser transmitida de manera que aparezca como tiene que ser, es decir, «pública», «única», «pneumática espiritual
». A partir de cada una de estas características, se puede llegar a un fecundo discernimiento sobre la auténtica transmisión de la fe en el hoy de la Iglesia. Concluye el Papa diciendo que «esta doctrina es como una senda maestra para aclarar a todas las personas de buena voluntad el
objeto y los confines del diálogo sobre los valores, y para dar un empuje siempre nuevo a la acción misionera de la Iglesia, a la fuerza de la verdad
que es la fuente de todos los auténticos valores del mundo» .
Que la Iglesia oriente su actividad a favor de los pobres no es una cuestión sociológica, ni estrategia política, ni de moda «setentera», o afirmación de la decadente teología de la liberación, como lo plantean unos. Este construir «desde abajo», «desde la perspectiva de las victimas», «desde los excluidos», «desde los pobres» es un dato que aparece ya en la tradición veterotestamentaria: «He visto la opresión de
mi pueblo en Egipto, he oído el clamor que le arrancan sus opresores y conozco sus angustias. Voy a bajar a liberarlo» (Ex 3,7); y que Jesús
confirma en el espíritu de las Bienaventuranzas (Mt 5,1-11), por este acercamiento salvífico será por lo que seremos juzgados (Mt 25, 31-46); y cuando la Iglesia no «discierne el cuerpo«, y no se construye desde esa perspectiva es fuertemente reprendida por sus pastores: «Por eso hay entre ustedes muchos enfermos y débiles, y bastantes mueren por esta razón. Si nos hiciésemos la debida autocrítica, no seriamos condenados» (1 Cor, 11,30-31).
Además todo el acontecimiento de la Encarnación apunta en ese sentido: pastores –excluidos e impuros como primeros testigos-, pesebre
y no encontrar posada, etc.
Más adelante, la Tradición eclesial abunda en ejemplos. Por citar algunos: el diácono San Lorenzo, los llama «el tesoro de la Iglesia». En
el medioevo la Iglesia buscó acercarse a ellos a través de innumerables iniciativas y movimientos espirituales, sobresaliendo por su eclesialidad
el Franciscano. Por ejemplo, San Antonio de Padua afirmaba: “Y si no socorre y cierra el corazón al hermano pobre, digo que peca mortalmente,
porque no está en él la caridad de Dios; pues si la tuviese, con gusto auxiliaría al hermano pobre”.
En la Contrarreforma sobran los ejemplos: tenemos a las órdenes hospitalarias, a San Vicente de Paul, San Cayetano, San Camilo de Lelis,
San Juan Bosco e infinidad de instituciones que encarnan este ideal.
Para América Latina, la Conferencia Episcopal de Medellín (1968) dio a nuestra iglesia los elementos esenciales, que maduraran en la siguiente década con Puebla, configurando los tres ejes que podemos
decir son propias o típicas de la Iglesia latinoamericana: La opción por los pobres, la teología de la liberación y las Comunidades Eclesiales de Base. En Puebla da un mandato eclesial: «afirmamos la necesidad de conversión de toda la Iglesia para una opción preferencial por los
pobres, con miras a su liberación integral» (Pue 1134).
La culminación de ese proceso creo que es la declaración de Juan Pablo II en Novo Millennio Ineunte 49, tan ignorada pero paradigmática,
por el contexto en que la dijo: el inicio del siglo XXI y milenio (los subrayados son míos):
«El siglo y el milenio que comienzan tendrán que ver todavía, y es de desear que lo vean de modo palpable, a qué grado de entrega puede
llegar la caridad hacia los más pobres. Si verdaderamente hemos partido de la contemplación de Cristo, tenemos que saberlo descubrir sobre todo en el rostro de aquellos con los que él mismo ha querido identificarse:
« He tenido hambre y me habéis dado de comer, he tenido sed y me habéis dado que beber; fui forastero y me habéis hospedado; desnudo
y me habéis vestido, enfermo y me habéis visitado, encarcelado y habéis venido a verme » (Mt 25,31-46). Esta página no es una simple
invitación a la caridad: es una página de cristología, que ilumina el misterio de Cristo. Sobre esta página, la Iglesia comprueba su fidelidad como Esposa de Cristo, no menos que sobre el ámbito de la ortodoxia.
No debe olvidarse, ciertamente, que nadie puede ser excluido de nuestro amor, desde el momento que «con la encarnación el Hijo de Dios se ha
unido en cierto modo a cada hombre» (GS 22). Ateniéndonos a las indiscutibles palabras del Evangelio, en la persona de los pobres hay una presencia especial suya, que impone a la Iglesia una opción preferencial por ellos. Mediante esta opción, se testimonia el estilo del amor de Dios, su providencia, su misericordia y, de alguna manera, se siembran todavía en la historia aquellas semillas del Reino de Dios que Jesús mismo dejó en su vida terrena atendiendo a cuantos recurrían a Él para toda clase de necesidades espirituales y materiales.»
Ciertamente se podría precisar que la Notificación esta hablando de «Iglesia de los pobres», pues precisemos. El termino no es de Jon Sobrino, ni de ningún teólogo de la liberación, fueron nuestros pastores quienes lo acuñaron: el Beato Juan XXIII en un radiomensaje de 1962, previo a la inauguración del Concilio Vaticano II dijo: «para los países subdesarrollados la iglesia se presenta como es y como quiere ser, como la iglesia de todos, en particular como la iglesia de los pobres». Pero el Papa Juan XXIII no era el único pastor proponiendo que la Iglesia mostrara una preferencia hacia los pobres. En la primera reunión del Concilio, el Arzobispo de Bolonia, Cardenal Lercaro se acercó al tema de la pobreza: «El tema de este Concilio es, ciertamente, la Iglesia en
tanto que es, sobre todo, la Iglesia de los pobres». Antes de la reunión del 26 de octubre para discutir el tema de la pobreza, el Obispo del Sahara, Monseñor Mercier, por indicación de los asistentes, escribió una nota con el título «La Iglesia de los pobres» acuñando así un termino central de la futura teología de la liberación.
Una Iglesia de los pobres nunca se ha entendido en la tradición latinoamericana como un selecto club de miserables, una especie de «corte de los milagros» que desprecie a los pérfidos ricos. Lo proclamamos en todo lo alto ¡Dios no quiere la miseria para nadie en este mundo! ¡Dios quiere que todos sus hijos e hijas tengan vida abundante!;
ante el dato escandaloso de miserables al lado de opulencia lacerante, a los cristianos, nuestra fe nos exige por mandato evangélico y tradición
apostólica hacer una opción por los pobres, y en esto consiste la eclesiología de esta llamada «Iglesia de los pobres» que nunca se ha visto lejos de sus pastores, pues de ellos surgió.
Esta Iglesia de los pobres pretende que veamos la sociedad con los ojos de los pobres y solidarizarse con ellos. Por tanto no estamos hablando de lucha de clases, sino de hacer histórico lo que dice
San Agustín: “En la caridad el pobre es rico, sin caridad todo rico es pobre.”
Por tanto, es evidente a la luz de lo anterior que la fe de la Iglesia pasa necesariamente por la opción por los pobres, y que ahí es donde se verifica la ortodoxia de nuestra fe. Por tanto la prevención sobre esta dualidad en la Notificación sale sobrando, pues la Fe de la Iglesia y la
tradición apostólica no están en contra de una Iglesia de los pobres, entendida como aquella que hace un «acercamiento salvífico» prioritario
a favor de ellos, y que es un dato cristológico fundamental.

Translation - English The Apostolicity of the Option for the Poor
I would like to begin with an experience that many of my brothers and sister who now serve the church in Mexico shared between 1985 and 1998. I experienced it in 1996. Roberto Oliveros, the eminent theologian and deacon of the Colegio Máximo of the Society of Jesus, entered the classroom to begin his course on Christology. He gave us the pertinent instructions and described the structure of our reflection, solemnly, but with a dry wit. As we were about to leave, he held up a book in each of his hands and told us, “our principle companions throughout the journey of this class will be two brothers, Juan Luis Segundo and Jon Sobrino.” Roberto dropped Juan Luis’ book from his hand, letting it fall on the table. He added, “Juan Luis has just died and so now it’s just Jon and us.”
That is how we began the process of familiarizing ourselves with Sobrino’s style: systematic, at times redundant, and always full of provocative and memorable expressions. It was a journey of reconstruction of faith that brought us to love more our Father God, a close and kind presence; Jesus and the centrality of the Kingdom of God and its salvific approaching; and the sacramental and mysterious presence of the Church called to be Samaritan for the excluded of this world. The reflection was amplified beyond the walls of the classroom and many of us returned passionately to read The Principle of Mercy and its corollary Christ the Liberator which lead us to understand and live theology as intellectus amoris, an explanation of what we love and what in the case of Sobrino is made more explicit as an intellectus misericordia, iustitiae, liberationis: a rationality that mercifully gives meaning to justice and the possibilities of the liberation of humanity.
The Christology of Jon Sobrino is already part of the patrimony of the Church, especially in the Latin American theological tradition that John Paul II called “opportune, useful, and necessary” and connected to the “Apostolic Tradition of the Great Fathers and Doctors, through the ordinary and extraordinary Magisterium.”
Today, recognizing myself indirectly as one of his students, I take advantage of the “Notification” directed to Jon Sobrino as a new invitation to develop and clarify some elements present in his work, something that we have already done in brotherly dialogue, in the classroom and before the Lord in the Sanctuary throughout these many years.
Far from seeing them as anathema sit, I see the points signaled in the Notification as an invitation to deepen our understanding of Christology from a Latin American perspective, in order to bring to the forefront its reason for being.
There are various issues that the Notification touches upon, all of which can be clarified. I will choose just one, the first issue, “Methodological Presuppositions,” which is important because it raises some questions about the theological method of the Christology of Sobrino. It is divided in two parts:
• The poor as a theological setting and principle of interpretation (n. 2).
• The normative value of the Christological Councils (n. 3).
The second point of the Notification begins by citing the work of Jon Sobrino where he affirms that from the Latin American perspective, the poor occupy a privileged setting and are a fundamental principle of interpretation for theology. In the following paragraph, it valorizes the theological setting of the poor, which precisely must be (like any theological setting) inserted in the Faith of the Church. The Notification concludes with a profoundly disquieting phrase: “The ecclesial foundation of Christology may not be identified with the ‘Church of the poor,’ but is found rather in the apostolic faith transmitted through the Church for all generations.”
I say that it is disquieting because it suggests that the Apostolic Faith is opposed to the Church of the Poor. I do not believe that any of us who do Catholic theology in Latin America can agree with the primary sense that this phrase would seem to have.
This asks to us to develop our understanding of two things: we must determine what “Apostolic Faith” is, and, from this perspective, we must verify if the construction of a Church of the Poor goes against it.
Let us begin by closely reading the commentary that Pope Benedict XVI made during his audience of March 28, 2007, upon introducing Saint Irenaeus of Lyon, one of the great theologians and pastors of Christianity. The Pope commented as follows:
In the center of Irenaeus’ though is the question of the “rule of faith” and its transmission. For Irenaeus, the “rule of faith” coincides in practice with the “Creed” of the apostles, and it gives us the key to interpret the Gospel, to interpret the Creed in the light of the Gospel. This apostolic symbol—which is a type of synthesis of the Gospel—helps us to understand what the Gospel means and the way in which we must read it.
In fact, the Gospel preached by Irenaeus is the Gospel he received from Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, and the Gospel of Polycarp came from the Apostle John, of whom Polycarp was a disciple. In this way, the true teaching is not that which is invented by intellectuals, surpassing the simple faith of the Church. [The true Gospel is that which has been discerned by those who demonstrate to the community what they have received, not only as knowledge, but as faith lived in community] thanks to an unbroken chain which proceeds from the apostles. The faith lived and confessed publicly by the Church is the common faith of all. Only this faith is apostolic, that which proceeds from the apostles, that is to say, from Jesus and God.
Irenaeus was concerned to describe the genuine concept of the Apostolic Tradition, which we can summarize in three points:
• The Apostolic Tradition is “public,” not private or secret. [It has a communal character; it is not what one just happens to think of, but rather it passes through the filter of the ecclesial community throughout time and space, in which the bishop is the head of discernment.] For Irenaeus, there is no doubt that the content of the faith transmitted by the Church is that which is received from the apostles and Jesus, the Son of God. There is no other teaching.
• The Apostolic Tradition is “unitary.” While gnosticism is divided into numerous sects, the Tradition of the Church is unitary in its fundamental contents that, as we have seen, Irenaeus calls “regula fidei” or “veritatis.” Given that it is unitary in its fundamental contents, it creates a unity throughout communities, throughout different cultures, and throughout different communities. Like the truth, it has a common content, despite its presence in different languages and cultures. [This unity is what Jon Sobrino calls the “meta-paradigmatic” element of Christology in the introduction of Christ the Liberator.]
• Finally, the Apostolic Tradition is “pneumatic,” that is to say, spiritual, guided by the Holy Spirit. It does not deal with a transmission trusted to more or less instructed men, but the Spirit of God, who guarantees the fidelity of the transmission of the faith. This is the “life” of the Church, which always makes her young, that is to say, fruitful with many graces. Church and Spirit for Irenaeus are inseparable: “Where the Church is, there is the Spirit of God; where the Spirit of God is, there is the Church and every kind of grace.”
Because of this, the faith of the Church should be transmitted so that it shows itself in the way that it must, that is to say, “public,” “unitary,” and “pneumatic-spiritual.” By using each of these characteristics as points of departure, it is possible to arrive at a rich discernment about the authentic transmission of the faith today in the Church. The Pope concludes by saying, “this doctrine is like a master path to clarify to all people of good will the object and the confines of the dialogue about values, and to give an ever-new push to the missionary action of the Church, through the force of the truth which is the source of all of the authentic values of the world.”
The Apostolicity of the Option for the Poor, the Church of the Poor
That the Church should orient its activity in favor of the poor is not a sociological question, a political strategy, “seventies”-style thinking, or an affirmation of the decadent theology of liberation, like some suggest. To construct “from below,” “from the perspective of the victims,” “from the excluded,” and “from the poor” is a datum that already appears in the Old Testament tradition: “I have seen the affliction of my people in Egypt, and I have heard their cry because of their taskmaster. I have come down to liberate them”(Ex 3:7). Jesus confirms it in the spirit of the Beatitudes (Mt 5:1-11). Our judgment will depend upon this salvific nearness (Mt 25:31-46). When the Church does not “discern the body,” and neglects to base itself on this perspective, it is strongly reprimanded by its pastors: “That is why some of you are sick and weak, and some have died for this reason. But if we were to judge ourselves, we would not come under judgment” (1 Cor 11:30-31).
Additionally, the entire event of the Incarnation is focused on this datum: it speaks of shepherds—excluded and impure like the first witnesses—the manger, no room at the inn, etc.
Later on, the ecclesial tradition abounds with examples. Let me cite a few. The deacon Saint Lorenzo was called “the treasure of the Church.” During the Middle Ages, the Church sought to approach the poor through innumerable initiatives and spiritual movements, with the Franciscan movement surpassing them all. For example, Saint Antonio of Padua affirmed, “If one does do not help his poor brother and closes his heart to him, I say that he has mortally sinned, because he does not have the charity of God in him. Well, if he had it, he would joyfully help his poor brother.”
In the Counter Reformation, examples abound; we have the hospital orders, Saint Vincent de Paul, Saint Cayetano, Saint Camil of Lelis, Saint John Bosco and an infinity of institutions that incarnate this idea.
For Latin America, the Bishop’s Conference of Medellín (1968) gave our Church the essential elements that would mature in the following decade with Puebla, configuring the three keys which we can say are unique to or typical of the Latin American Church: the option for the poor, the theology of liberation, and the Ecclesiastical Base Communities. In Puebla, an ecclesial demand was given: “we affirm the necessity of conversion of all the Church for a preferential option for the poor, looking towards an integral liberation” (Puebla 1134).
The culmination of this process, I believe, is in the declaration of John Paul II in Novo Milenio Ineunte 49, so ignored but paradigmatic because of the context in which it was given: the beginning of the 21st century and the millennium (italics are mine):
The century and the millennium now beginning will need to see, and hopefully with still greater clarity, to what length of dedication the Christian community can go in charity towards the poorest. If we have truly started out anew from the contemplation of Christ, we must learn to see him especially in the faces of those with whom he himself wished to be identified: “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me” (Mt 25:35-37). This Gospel text is not a simple invitation to charity: it is a page of Christology which sheds a ray of light on the mystery of Christ. By these words, no less than by the orthodoxy of her doctrine, the Church measures her fidelity as the Bride of Christ.
Certainly we need to remember that no one can be excluded from our love, since “through his Incarnation the Son of God has united himself in some fashion with every person” (Gaudium et Spes 35). Yet, as the unequivocal words of the Gospel remind us, there is a special presence of Christ in the poor, and this requires the Church to make a preferential option for them. This option is a testimony to the nature of God’s love, to his providence and mercy; and in some way history is still filled with the seeds of the Kingdom of God which Jesus himself sowed during his earthly life whenever he responded to those who came to him with their spiritual and material needs.
Certainly it would be possible to insist that the Notification is talking about the “Church of the Poor.” Well, we insist upon it. The term is not from Jon Sobrino, or from any liberation theologian. Our pastors were the ones who coined them; the Blessed John XXIII in a radio message in 1962, before the inauguration of the Second Vatican Council said, “Confronted with the underdeveloped countries, the church presents itself as it is and wishes to be, as the church of all, and particularly as the Church of the Poor.” But Pope John XXIII was not the only pastor proposing that the Church demonstrate a preference for the poor. In the first meeting of the Council, the Archbishop of Bologna, Cardenal Lercaro touched on the theme of poverty: “The theme of this Council is certainly above all the Church of the Poor.” Before the reunion of October 26th to discuss the theme of poverty, the Archbishop of the Sahara, Monsignor Mercier, by the indication of the attendees, wrote a note with the title “The Church of the Poor,” in this way coining a central term of the future theology of liberation.
A Church of the Poor has never been understood in the Latin American tradition as a select club of miserables, a species of a “court of miracles” that despises the “traitorous rich.” We proclaim out loud, “God does not want misery for anybody in this world! God wants all of his sons and daughters to have abundant life!” When we are confronted with the scandalous fact of misery side-by-side with lacerating opulence, our Christian faith—because of Gospel commandments and the Apostolic Tradition—demands that we make an option for the poor. This is what the ecclesiology of the “Church of the Poor” consists in; it has never seen itself as separate from its pastors because it precisely from them that it arose.
This Church of the Poor attempts to see society with the eyes of the poor and to enter into solidarity with them. Because of this, we are not talking about a class struggle, but about making historical what Saint Augustine says: “In charity the poor is rich, without charity the rich is poor.”
In light of what has been said, it is evident that the faith of the Church must necessarily make an option for the poor, and that in this option, the orthodoxy of our faith is verified. To return to the supposed duality that the Notification suggests, it is clear that the Faith of the Church and the Apostolic Tradition do not conflict with a “Church of the Poor,” understood as a Church that makes a privileged “salvific approach” in favor of them, and which is based on a fundamental Christological datum.

I am a strong translator for a wide range of projects, particularly in the health, medical, immigration, legal, humanities, economics, and social sciences areas. My practice as a lawyer (licensed in New York since 2009) and my language experience combine to make me a very precise, careful, and clear translator. I have served as the chief coordinator and translator of several theology anthologies, and have worked in bilingual professional capacities for several years, in both Latin America and the United States.
I am interested in projects from translating birth certificates and medical records to philosophy textbooks. I am particularly knowledgeable of idiomatic Spanish from Mexico, El Salvador, and Guatemala but am comfortable with texts from South America and Spain.
