Lisboa, Julho de 2012.
Peter Frampton entrou na Brasileira do Chiado para a segunda bica do dia. Líder máximo das Frampton Industries, precisara de se deslocar a Lisboa para resolver alguns problemas relacionados com a filial portuguesa. Já não era a primeira vez. Como adorava Portugal, aproveitava qualquer desculpa para aqui se deslocar pessoalmente. Com qualquer outro país, mandaria um executivo, mas o certo é que Peter estava meio enfeitiçado por aquele povo original, algo tristonho, mas muito simpático, e seu bonito país. Não sabia bem explicar. É certo que Lisboa era uma cidade lindíssima. Só que Paris, ou Roma, também o eram. No entanto, raramente se deslocava àqueles países, mas visitava Portugal todos os anos. Sem saber bem porquê. Só sabia que não era o único caso. Vários amigos seus, que tinham visitado o país, acabaram por tornar-se visitas regulares. Parecia que um qualquer magnetismo os fazia sempre voltar.
Um dos motivos pelos quais ia em pessoa era para poder reabastecer-se de vinho do Porto. Se os vinhos portugueses eram dos melhores do mundo, o vinho do Porto era único. Quando, já há alguns anos, provara o precioso néctar pela primeira vez, ficara imediatamente seduzido por um sabor… como explicar, algo divino. Desde então, não dispensava um cálice depois das refeições. E, claro, aproveitava as idas a Lisboa para comprar várias caixas dos melhores vintages.
Mal entrou, reparou imediatamente num homem sentado a um canto. Com ar taciturno, nitidamente alcoolizado, murmurava palavras ininteligíveis e fumava furiosamente. Peter, habituado que estava a avaliar o seu semelhante com um simples olhar, percebeu logo não estar diante de um vulgar bêbado. Quando entrou, o outro levantou a custo a cabeça e o seu olhar penetrante cruzou-se por um instante com o dele. Era hipnótico, intoxicante, e incomodou-o profundamente. Olhos vítreos, de um negro absoluto, sussurraram-lhe ao ouvido palavras de apelo, pinceladas aqui e ali de um orgulho ancestral. De repente, sem aviso prévio, o bizarro personagem levantou bruscamente a cabeça e, acto contínuo, ergueu o cálice de bagaço em jeito de brinde, ao mesmo tempo que lhe fazia sinal para se sentar à mesa. Incapaz de pensar, Peter sentou-se, mecanicamente. E, num ápice, o universo confinava-se àquela mesa, a si, mudo de espanto, e ao bêbado estranhíssimo sentado à sua frente com ar trocista.
Foi então que ele falou. A voz soou cava e profunda, como numa cena esotérica de um qualquer filme de série B.
– Caro senhor, encontro-me numa situação lamentável. Contudo... desculpe, o senhor não é português, pois não? – Peter fez que não com a cabeça. – Pois, bem me parecia, mas, pelos vistos, percebe português? – E Peter, ainda incapaz de falar, acenou um «mais ou menos». – O melhor é continuarmos em inglês, não acha? – O milionário concordou com a cabeça.
– Antes de mais, deixe que me apresente: Júlio Quental, muito prazer – disse o inventor num inglês bem razoável, enquanto estendia a mão.
– Frampton. Peter Frampton, muito prazer.
– O quê? O Peter Frampton, das Frampton Industries?
– Olhe, o da música é que não sou, de certeza.
– Mas nesse caso os deuses estão comigo. Era difícil encontrar alguém mais adequado para apresentar o meu invento. Vamos então aos factos: há coisa de seis meses, terminei os planos de uma máquina que pode mudar a sociedade. Apressei-me a registar a patente, mas agora não tenho dinheiro para produzir o protótipo. Este invento pode tornar-me, a mim, que estou falido, imensamente rico e ao senhor também, se aceitar o meu desafio, é claro. Não, eu sei que tenho todo o ar disso, mas não estou maluco.
Peter reparou pela primeira vez no aspecto bizarro do desconhecido: tinha cerca de trinta anos. Calçava botas da tropa, vestia calças de ganga pretas com uma T-shirt da mesma cor e, apesar de ser Verão, uma gabardina cinzenta à Colombo, só que bastante mais sebenta e encardida que a do famoso detective. Não era careca, mas tinha o cabelo rapado com esmero. O nariz adunco dava-lhe um certo ar de ave de rapina. Sem dúvida, uma estranha figura. E falava sem cessar, como se receasse que, à primeira pausa, ele se levantasse e saísse porta fora.
– Não, garanto-lhe que não estou maluco. Bem vê, esta máquina pode resolver de uma vez por todas os problemas de consciência dos fumadores. Está a ver: o maior problema de um fumador, para além, como é óbvio, do grande mal que faz a si próprio, é o mal e incómodo que provoca aos outros à sua volta. Eu próprio, apesar de completamente agarrado, evito acender cigarros em sítios onde, mesmo não sendo proibido, sei que vou incomodar terceiros. Só é pena que nem todos ajam assim. É uma questão de hábito, penso eu. Aliás, a maioria das leis restritivas do fumo, nas quais os EUA são campeões, têm por base os direitos dos chamados «fumadores passivos». E o senhor, sendo americano, conhece essa realidade bem melhor que eu. Ora bem, com a minha máquina este tipo de problemas desaparecia. E porquê?, pergunta-me o senhor. É que, com este invento, ao qual dei o nome de «Máquina de Fumar», sempre que alguém fumar um cigarro, mesmo numa sala fechada, em vez de poluir o ar este tornar-se-á mais puro. Parece impossível, não é? E, no entanto, é terrivelmente simples. Olhe, eu trago sempre comigo uma cópia do projecto. E como confio no senhor, vou-lho mostrar. — E o estranho personagem tirou com ares teatrais, de uma pasta mole de cabedal preto já muito puída, um maço de folhas A4 agrafadas, passando-o a Peter. As folhas estavam gastas e amarelecidas, com sinais de manuseio intensivo. Aqui e ali, notavam-se algumas manchas de café e queimadelas de cigarro.
Na primeira página, Peter viu pela primeira vez o esquema da máquina. Parecia uma daquelas caixas metálicas para charuto. De formato cilíndrico, tinha quinze centímetros de comprimento por quatro de diâmetro. Nas páginas seguintes, estavam vários esquemas pormenorizados da máquina, bem como especificações técnicas. O milionário estava espantado. Era uma ideia de uma simplicidade atroz. Um autêntico ovo de Colombo.
Translation - English Prologue / Preface
Lisbon, Portugal, July 2012.
Peter Frampton went inside Chiado’s Brasileira for his second cup of coffee of the day. As Frampton Industries CEO, he had had to travel to Lisbon to take care of some issues involving the Portuguese branch office. It wasn’t his first time. He simply loved the country, so he always took any excuse to travel there personally. Were it any other country and he would have sent one of his executives, but the truth was that Peter was sort of bewitched by this original, somewhat morose, yet extremely warm people and their beautiful country. He couldn’t quite explain. No doubt Lisbon was absolutely charming. Then again, so were Paris or Rome. And yet seldom would he go there, whereas to Portugal he made a point of coming every year. He didn’t really know why. What he did know was that wasn’t the only one. Several friends of him, who had come to Portugal, had ended up regular visitors. Some sort of enchantment seemed to keep them coming back.
One of the reasons why he always came personally was to get himself a new stash of port wine. Portuguese wines were amongst the best in the world, but port wine was unique. Years ago, when he had had his first sip of the precious nectar, he was immediately seduced by a taste that was - how to put it? – almost divine. From then on he wouldn’t go without a glass of port after his meals. Of course that, on his trips to Lisbon, he made sure he bought several cases of the best vintage wines.
When he went inside the café, he immediately noticed a man sitting on a corner. Looking gloomy and clearly drunk he mumbled unintelligible words and smoked like a chimney. Used as he was to judge his fellow man at a simple glance, Peter realized right away that this wasn’t your common lush. As Peter had entered the café the man had raised his head with difficulty and for a moment his piercing eyes had met Peter’s. His stare was hypnotic, intoxicating, and it bothered Peter deeply. The man’s lifeless pitch black eyes whispered words of appeal into Peter’s, flecked here and there of what seemed to be an ancestral pride. Out of the blue, and with a swift rear of his head, the bizarre character raised his cup as if toasting and at the same time beckoned Peter to sit at his table. Unable to think clearly, Peter joined him and sat mechanically. All of a sudden, the whole universe was reduced to that table, to himself, awe struck and tongue tied, and to this offbeat drunk sitting and sneering in front of him.
And then he spoke. His voice deep and hollow as in B-picture supernatural scene.
‘Dear sir, I am in a most wretched situation. However – Pardon me, but you are not Portuguese, are you?’ Peter shook his head. ‘I figured as much. But apparently you do understand Portuguese, don’t you?’ Still unable to speak, Peter nodded a so-so. ‘Well, better to continue in English, don’t you think?’ The millionaire complied with a nod.
‘First of all let me introduce myself: nice to meet you, I’m Júlio Quental’ the inventor said in a pretty good English and extending his hand.
‘Frampton. Peter Frampton, nice to meet you too.’
‘What? Frampton industries Peter Frampton?’
‘Well, I’m sure not music Peter Frampton.’
‘In that case the gods are with me. It would’ve been harder to find a better man to present my invention to. Let’s cut to the chase: about six months ago I finished the blueprint of a machine that may change society. I made sure I took out the patent for it on the double. But now I haven’t got the money to build the prototype. This invention can get me, a broke man, a whole lotta money, and you too, if you take up my challenge, of course. I know, I know I look like it, but I’m not crazy.’
For the first time Peter noticed the odd features of the stranger: he was thirty-something, sported army boots, black jeans and a T-shirt of the same color, and, despite being summer, had on a grey Colombo-like raincoat, only greasier and filthier than the one of the legendary detective. He was not bald, but had his head carefully clean-shaven. His crooked nose made him look a bit like a bird of prey. And he spoke endlessly as if afraid that, if he stopped talking, Peter stood up and made for the door.
‘No, sir, I can assure you I am not crazy. You know, this machine can put an end to all of the smokers’ qualms of conscience for good. You see, the biggest problem for a smoker, other than the harm they bring to themselves, obviously, is the harm and nuisance they bring to people around them. I myself, although totally hooked, avoid lighting up a cigarette in places I know I might disturb others, even if smoking is allowed there. It’s a shame not everybody bothers to act the same. It’s a matter of habit, I think. Besides, most smoke inhibiting laws, of which the US are champions, are based on the so-called «second-hand smokers»’ rights. And you, being an American, are more aware of that than I am. Well, my machine would end up this sort of problems. And why would that be, you ask? Because, with this invention, which I have called «Smoking Machine», whenever a person smokes a cigarette, even in a closed room, they will be not polluting the air but making it purer and fresher. Sounds impossible, doesn’t it? And yet it’s really simple. Here, I always carry a copy of the blueprint, let me show you.’ And, theatrically, the bizarre character took out a bunch of paper sheets stapled together from a chafed black soft leather briefcase and passed it to Peter. The sheets of paper were yellow and worn out, some appeared to have been thumbed through over and over again. Here and there you could see a couple of coffee stains and cigarette burns.
On the first page Peter saw for the first time the sketch of the machine. It looked like one of those metallic cigar cases. It was cylindrical and about 6 in long and 40 mm diameter. The next pages showed several detailed drawings of the machine, as well as technical features. The millionaire was amazed. It was an utterly simple idea. The proverbial Egg of Colombus.

Source text - English 1) Spend the time! By far the most important factor is how much time you are immersed in the language. The more time you spend with the language, the faster you will learn. This means you with the language, listening, reading, writing, speaking, and studying words and phrases.
This does not mean sitting in class looking out the window, nor listening to other students who do not speak well, nor getting explanations in your own language about how the language works.This means spending time enjoyably connected to the language you are learning.
2) Listen and read every day! Listen wherever you are on your MP3 player. Read what you are you listening to. Listen to and read things that you like, things that you can mostly understand, or even partly understand. If you keep listening and reading you will get used to the language. One hour of listening or reading is more effective than many
hours of class time.
3) Focus on words and phrases! Build up your vocabulary, you'll need lots. Start to notice words and how they come together as phrases. Learn these words and phrases through your listening and reading. Read
online, using online dictionaries, and make your own vocabulary lists for review. Soon you will run into your new words and phrases elsewhere. Gradually you will be able to use them. Do not worry about how accurately you speak until you have accumulated a lot of words through listening and reading.
4) Take responsibility for your own learning! If you do not want to learn the language, you won't. If you do want to learn the language, take control. Choose content of interest, that you want to listen to and read. Seek out the words and phrases that you need to understand
your listening and reading. Do not wait for someone else to show you the language, nor to tell you what to do. Discover the language by yourself, like a child growing up. Talk when you feel like it. Write when you feel like it. A teacher cannot teach you to become fluent, but you can learn to become fluent if you want to.
5) Relax and enjoy yourself! Do not worry about what you cannot remember, or cannot yet understand, or cannot yet say. It does not matter. You are learning and improving. The language will gradually become clearer in your brain, but this will happen on a schedule that you cannot control. So sit back and enjoy. Just make sure you spend enough time with the language. That is the greatest guarantee of
success.
Translation - Portuguese 1) Invista o seu tempo! Sem dúvida que o factor mais importante é a quantidade de tempo que você dedica a expor-se à nova língua. Quanto mais se expuser a ela, mais depressa aprenderá. Isto quer dizer que se trata de si e da própria língua; trata-se de si a ouvir, a ler, a escrever, a falar e a estudar palavras e expressões. Não se trata de si sentado numa sala de aula a olhar lá para fora, ou a ouvir alunos que não falam bem, ou a tirar dúvidas na sua própria língua sobre o funcionamento da língua que está a estudar. Trata-se de passar o tempo entretido e a interagir com a língua que está a aprender.
2) Ouça e leia todos os dias! Ouça onde quer que esteja no seu leitor de MP3. Ao mesmo tempo vá lendo o que está a ouvir. Ouça e leia sobre assuntos que lhe interessam, coisas que possa compreender total ou parcialmente. Se continuar a ouvir e a ler irá habituar-se à nova língua aos poucos. Uma hora de audição e de leitura é mais eficaz do que muitas horas encafuado numa sala de aula.
3) Dê muita atenção às palavras e às expressões! Aprenda imenso vocabulário, pois irá precisar de muito. Comece a reparar nas palavras e em como se juntam para construir expressões. Aprenda essas palavras e expressões através do que ouve e do que lê. Leia online, usando dicionários online, e faça as suas próprias listas de vocabulário para ir revendo. Rapidamente irá reconhecer essas palavras e expressões algures. Aos poucos será capaz de empregá-las. Não se preocupe em falar correctamente até ter aprendido muitas palavras e expressões pela audição e pela leitura.
4) Responsabilize-se pela sua própria aprendizagem! Se não quiser aprender uma língua nova, então não a aprenderá. Se quiser aprender essa língua, assuma o controlo. Escolha conteúdos que lhe interessem, sobre os quais lhe apeteça ouvir e ler. Pesquise as palavras e as expressões imprescindíveis para compreender o que está a ouvir e a ler. Não fique à espera que alguém lhe explique a língua ou lhe diga o que fazer. Descubra a língua por si próprio, como uma criança faz ao desenvolver-se. Fale quando lhe apetecer. Escreva quando lhe apetecer. Um professor não pode ensinar-lhe a ser fluente, mas você pode aprender a sê-lo se quiser.
5) Relaxe e divirta-se! Não se preocupe com o que não consegue reter, ou com o que não consegue ainda compreender ou dizer. Não faz mal. Você está a aprender e a progredir. A nova língua irá progressivamente ficar mais clara na sua cabeça, mas isto só acontecerá num espaço de tempo que não conseguirá determinar. Portanto, descontraia-se e divirta-se. Mas não se esqueça de dedicar tempo à sua nova língua. Essa é a maior garantia de sucesso.
