Casey Young

After a comprehensive process with emphasis in abilities, experience and flexibility in a foreign country, Mr. Casey Young was invited to be a Water and Sanitation Engineer in the Peace Corps serving in Honduras, Central America.
On February the 12th, 2003 Casey began his twelve-week training period in Santa Lucía, Francisco Morazán. The program included components of the classroom as well as in the field, with an emphasis in Spanish and technical abilities pertaining to the building of water systems in underdeveloped countries. Also included were courses encompassing the political, economic and social situation in Honduras. During this time Casey lived with a host family to develop his linguistic ability and also to be exposed to the culture and traditions of Honduras.
Training was composed of the three following components:
Technical: A combination of theory in the classroom and technique in the field. Concepts related to the development of a water system were presented by means of visits to existing water systems and through presentations. The themes were topographic studies, design of a water system, the construction of the systems, the construction of latrines, delineation of watersheds, waste disposal systems, basic hygiene, the management of a water board, community analysis, education about the environment and help with proposal writing. Immersion into a foreign culture: Studies with an emphasis in the political, economical, geographical and social structure of Honduras, community analysis and diagnostic methods, the role of a Peace Corps Volunteer in the development of the community and how to write proposals. Casey was placed with a host family for three months to facilitate this process.

Linguistic ability: Intensive courses which included total immersion in written and spoken Spanish. To help support the information attained in the classroom Casey was placed with a host family for three months. (153 hours)
Upon completion of training, Casey Young was tested by a Peace Corps Certified Language Examiner. At that time he received a rating of Advance Low on his Oral Proficiency interview (OPI, formerly ACTFL) in Spanish Language. After twenty-three months of service as a Peace Corps Volunteer, Casey Young retook the test and received a new score of “Advanced High.”
On May 9th, 2003, Casey swore in as a Peace Corps Volunteer. His work site was in San Luis, Santa Bárbara, which is located in western Honduras. It is about sixty kilometers from the department’s capital of the same name, Santa Bárbara. San Luis has close to six thousand habitants, the majority of which grow coffee to earn a living.
The role of a Water and Sanitation Technician is to support the local government and non-governmental organizations with technical assistance in the work site as well as in the surrounding villages. In order to satisfy the said role, Casey worked with the following organizations: PROSAR, Cooperación Española, Plan Internacional and UMA. During his twenty-three months of service Casey worked within the rules of his project and provided his services in other areas of community development. The following are examples of the projects that Casey completed during his service:
Primary Goal:
Water projects: Casey lent his technical services to assist in various aspects of the construction and maintenance of gravity fed water systems. He also assisted in latrine projects and education of basic hygiene. The following is a brief summary of the communities in which Casey worked:

Educating water boards: Casey bettered the management of nine water boards (forty members) in rural communities. He presented information about the maintenance of a water system, theory and application of concepts used to protect a watershed, education about the environment, the fundamentals of accounting, how to use chlorine in drinking water and the construction of a water system.
Secondary Projects:
English teacher: Casey taught English to various students, employees and fellow associates during his service. He bettered their written and spoken English with concepts commonly used in the classroom. (138 hours)
Translator for medical brigades: Casey translated and organized logistics for short-term medical brigades that came from the United States. He worked in the following communities:

Basketball coach: Casey taught fundamental basketball skills to friends and to a few gym classes in San Luis’ high school. He tried to start a local basketball league but there was not enough local interest as soccer is the national pastime. (60 hours)
Baseball coach: Casey taught baseball principals to friends and to a few gym classes in San Luis with the help of fellow Peace Corps Volunteer Coung Nguyen. (40 hours)

Despúes de un proceso comprensivo con énfasis en las habilidades, experiencia y flexibilidad en el extranjero, el Señor Casey Young fue invitado a ser Ingeniero de Agua y Saneamiento en el Cuerpo de Paz en Honduras, Centro América.
Sr. Casey Young empezó su programa de capacitación de 12 semanas en Santa Lucía, Francisco Morazán el 13 de febrero de 2003. El programa lncluyó componentes en el aula y en el campo, además un énfasis en español y las habilidades técnicas pertinentes al desarrollo de sistemas de agua en paises pobres. También incluyó cursos en la situación politica, económica y social en Honduras. Durante ésta época Casey vivió con una familia anfitriona, apoyando mucho el desarrollo de su habilidad lingüística y exponiéndose a la cultura y las tradiciones de Honduras.
Las capacitaciones consistieron en los tres componentes siguientes:
Técnica: Una combinación de teória en el aula y técnica del campo. Conceptos relacionados al desarrollo de un sistema de agua estaban presentados por medio de charlas y visitas a sistemas existentes. Los temas eran estúdios topográficos, el diseño de un sistema, la construcción de los sistemas de agua, la construcción de letrinas, delineación de las microcuencas, sistemas de aguas negras o alcantarillado, higiene básica, el mantenimiento de juntas de aguas, análisis de las comunidades, educación sobre el medio ambiente, desarrollo sustento y ayuda con propuestas. (161 horas)
Inmersión en otra cultura: Estudios con énfasis en la politica, economía, geografía y la estructura social de Honduras, análisis comunitario y métodos diagnósticos, el papel de Cuerpo de Paz en el desarrollo de la communidad y como escribir propuestas. Casey estaba ubicado con una familia anfitriona por tres meses para ayudar en éste proceso. (113 horas)
Habilidad lingüística: Cursos intensivos los cuales incluyeron inmersión total en el español escrito y hablado, así como hondureñismos. Para dar apoyo a las clases Casey estaba ubicado con una familia anfitriona por tres meses. (153 horas)
Después de terminar las capacitaciones, un examinador de idiomas certificado por Cuerpo de Paz le hizo el examen de habilidad y Casey recibió una valuación de Avanzada Baja en español. Después de 26 meses de servicio como voluntario de Cuerpo de Paz, Casey rehizo el examen y recibió una valuación de Avanzada Alta.
Casey juramentó como voluntario el 9 de mayo de 2003. Su sitio de trabajo era San Luis, Santa Bárbara lo cual está en el occidente de Hodnuras. Está a 60 kilómetros de la capital del departamento. Tiene 6,00 habitatntes y la mayoria de la gente sembra café para ganar un sueldo.
El papel de Ingeniero de Agua y Saneamiento es apoyar el gobierno local y organizaciones no del gobierno con asistencia técnica así como en las aldeas alrededor del sitio del voluntario. Para cumplir lo dicho papel, Casey trabajó con las siguientes organizaciones: PROSAR, Cooperación Español, Plan International, y UMA. Durante su 26 meses de servicio Casey trabajó entre las reglas del proyecto y brindó sus servicios en otros áreas de desarrollo comunitario. Los siguientes son ejemplos de los proyectos que logró Casey durante su servicio.

Capacitando las juntas del agua: Les dí capacitaciones a 9 juntas de aguas (40 beneficiados) en las comunidades rurales. Las charlas cubrieron temas sobre el mantenimiento del sistema de agua, teória y aplicación de los conceptoes de proteger la microcuenca, educación sobre el medio ambiente, los fundamentales de contabilidad, como echar cloro al agua y construcción del sistema de agua.

Enseñar inglés: Enseñé ingles a varios estudiantes, empleados y contrapartes durante mi servicio. Mejoré sus habilidades en inglés esrito y hablado. (138 horas)
Traductor para brigadas: Traduje y organicé logísticas para brigadas de corto plazo que vinieron de los Estados Unidos. Trabajé en las siguientes comunidades con ellas:

Payment is expected for dental services provided during each visit.
During each walk-in visit a minimum of $56 is expected for each patient seen. The $56 covers the cost of the exam and a small X-ray. The bill for services rendered will be sent to you via mail and you will be expected to pay upon receiving the bill.
For individuals who have insurance/dental coverage (Medicaid, commercial insurance, ect.) we will ask that you pay your co-pay and deductible as described in your insurance/coverage plan.
Upon receiving your bill full payment is expected. You may make a payment arrangement for large balances with the payment administrator.
Financial Assistance (Iowa Care/Community Care)
You must be approved, with your card in hand, for financial assistance (Iowa Care/Community Care) before receiving dental care. If you do not have yourcard the day of your visit, YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY for services received...no exceptions!
If you do not pay your financial obligation, we will refuse service to you in the dental clinic.

I have been working locally and internationally as a professional Spanish <> English interpreter/translator since 2003. I currently have an AS in interpretation/translation with specialization in health care terminology and a Bachelors in Spanish for Health Care Providers. I lived in Honduras for three years as a Peace Corps volunteer. I have travelled extensively throughout Central and South America as well as Spain.
