Tener miedo no era extraño, en sus sueños abundaba el miedo. Esperó, tapado por las ramas de un arbusto y la noche sin estrellas. La primera vez que se me ocurrió tentar la experiencia a cuyo relato están dedicadas estas líneas, fue una tarde, leyendo no sé dónde, que los naturales de Java atribuían la falta de lenguaje articulado en los monos a la abstención, no a la incapacidad. --No hablan, --decían--, para que no los hagan trabajar. Semejante idea, nada profunda al principio, acabó por preocuparme hasta convertirse en este postulado antropológico: Los monos fueron hombres que por una u otra razón dejaron de hablar. El hecho produjo la atrofia de sus órganos de fonación y de los centros cerebrales del lenguaje; debilitó casi hasta suprimirla la relación entre unos y otros, fijando el idioma de la especie en el grito inarticulado, y el humano primitivo descendió a ser animal. Clearly, if this could be proven, then all the anomalies that make the ape such a singular being would be explained. But there could be only one possible way to prove it: return the monkey to speech. Meanwhile, I had been roaming the world with mine, bonding with him increasingly through our travels and adventures. In Europe, he attracted attention, and if I had wanted to, I could have made him as famous as a Consul. But my reputation as a businessman would have sat ill with such foolery. Impelled by my conviction of apes’ ability to speak, I devoured everything I could find on the subject, with no appreciable result. Source text - English INFORMED CONSENT STATEMENT Quest Atlantis You are invited to participate in a research study of learning and teaching project that uses an online, computer-based environment to engage children in educational tasks. You were selected as a possible subject because you have requested use of the program or a member of your school or center's administration suggested that you use the program. We ask that you read this form and ask any questions you may have before agreeing to be in the study. The study is being conducted by Dr. [xxxx], a professor of [xxxx] at [xx]'s Center for [xxx]. This work has been funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the National Science Foundation, NASA, the National Parks Service and other sponsors. STUDY PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to learn about the program's effectiveness for supporting academic learning and understanding how engaging children and adults in a narratively-rich game-based environment can affect their enjoyment of and participation in the learning process. As a part of our project development, we will be observing children and participating adults interacting at their school or in an after-school program and in the online Quest Atlantis space. All interactions in the online space are recorded by the computer and saved as part of our database. Our team may also be taking notes on how children and adults use the technology and possibly interviewing students or teachers about their experiences in the program. Interviews will last from 15 to 30 minutes. Information from these observations and interviews, as well as the computerized records of their participation in the online space will be entered into a password-protected database. Observations and interviews may be audio or video taped so that researchers can analyze data more closely. We also may make copies of materials that you or your students produce in the Quest Atlantis space. You are free to participate in this study as much or as little as you choose. You may withdraw at any time without any penalty. Typically, you might spend 40 minutes a session interacting with the program, with the number of sessions being determined by you, the teacher or staff member. You may participate in this study for one year or for several years, depending on your willingness to participate. If you choose to participate, we will need your consent for observing and videotaping your activities. Participation in this program is strictly voluntary. If you choose not to participate or to withdraw from this study, you will not be audio or video taped, and your data will not be analyzed. In addition, some of your students may be exposed to inappropriate language which may result in additional intervention time with parents or students. Bio

I have a master's degree in Hispanic linguistics and literature, and a doctorate in Spanish literature, with specialization in Latin America. I also have a widely varied background, with training and work experience in health care and the medical sciences, some marketing and transportation (business), home economics/nutrition/child development, and even a little of the hard sciences (chemistry and physics). In addition to this, I also have translation experience in the health and medicine, social sciences, education, and literature. Finally, I have considerable copy-editing and proofreading experience as the managing editor for Hispanic Review, an academic journal that publishes research on literature and culture in the Hispanic world. I currently teach Spanish language and culture at the university level (including an introductory translation course) to undergraduates, with freelance translating as a side line.

I have been working as a part-time freelancer since 1995. My largest project to date was the translation to English in spring 2014 of a cultural studies book titled Cultures of Anyone: Studies on Cultural Democratization in the Spanish Neoliberal Crisis, written by Luis Moreno Caballud and published by Liverpool University Press. Previous large projects have been in the fields of marketing, social work, cultural studies, literary analysis/criticism, and a series of documents on community outreach for families with autistic children. I frequently translate essays from Spanish to English for Routledge, a publisher of academic and professional books.

This experience shows that I am flexible and can work across the range of fields indicated in my profile.
