English to Romanian: St. Mary's Church, Ashbury Detailed field: Architecture
Source text - English The present church building dates from the twelfth century when, on the site of an earlier Saxon church, a Norman church was erected, probably cruciform in plan, with an aisle less nave having north and south entrances. Almost certainly the arch over the present south door was then at the western end.
The stained glass windows on the left on entering were bought from the nearby chapel of Ashdown House, once the residence of the Craven family and also the site of King Alfred’s famous victory over the Danes.
On the floor of the chancel is a tombstone of William Phillips, a Royalist
church-warden in the time of the commonwealth. There are three interesting brasses, one of which commemorates John de Walden (1350) and is probably the oldest in the country.
The south transept, until it was re-built in the thirteenth century
Was the Chantry of the Blessed Virgin Mary & is still used as the Lady Chapel.
Translation - Romanian Clădirea actuală a bisericii datează din secolul al XII-lea când, pe locul unei foste biserici saxone a fost ridicată o biserică Normandă, probabil in forma de cruce, având un altar si un naos prevăzute cu intrări in partea nordică si in cea sudică.
