Source text - English THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF WINE PACKAGING: ENCOURAGING THE USE OF LIGHTER WEIGHT WINE BOTTLES, BULK IMPORTATION AND RECYCLED CONTENT
There are several ways to reduce the environmental impact of wine packaging and make major cost savings without compromising consumer appeal or product durability.
There is no doubt that the global wine industry has a major impact on the environment and this is particularly true with regards to the packaging it uses. Glass bottles represent 97% of wine packaging and effect the environment in a number of ways. Environmental impacts are felt from the raw materials and energy used during the manufacturing and bottling processes to the carbon emissions associated with transportation, as well as the end disposal of the bottles once the wine has been consumed.
Take the example of the UK. As the world’s biggest importer of wine, it brings in almost a billion litres a year, with a retail value of approximately €8.1 billion. In 2007 the British public consumed 1,350 million 75cl bottles of wine. That figure represents almost 40% of all household beverage packaging and contributes almost 630,000 tonnes of glass to the UK waste stream. In fact, the carbon footprint of the alcoholic drinks consumed in the UK is 1.5% of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions – the equivalent of 3 million cars on the road every year - of which one quarter is attributable to wine.
However, there are significant opportunities to reduce this environmental impact while also achieving major cost savings, enhancing core brand values and attracting increased consumer loyalty. Studies show that consumers take a positive view of products when environmental advantages are highlighted and the commercial benefits are substantial, with potential savings of up to €68,500 per 1 million 75cl wine bottles for French wine producers.
Using lighter weight wine bottles
Switching to lighter weight wine bottles can significantly cut both the amount of raw materials used to produce wine packaging and the amount of glass which enters the waste stream. Based on studies into the average weight of wine bottles sold in supermarkets, which currently stands at 500g, it is estimated that the use of lighter bottles could save a minimum of 150,000 tonnes of packaging in the UK alone. This represents savings of 28,000 tonnes of CO2 per year – equivalent to taking 2,500 cars off the road.
In addition, lighter weight wine bottles reduce the emissions associated with the production and transportation of wine packaging. Research has demonstrated that a 20% reduction in weight, cutting the average bottle to 400g, could save 100g of CO2 emissions per 75cl bottle, while a cut of 30%, bringing the bottle weight down to 300g, could save 234g of CO2 per 75cl bottle.

Utiliser des bouteilles de vin plus légères
La transition vers des bouteilles plus légères peut réduire considérablement la quantité de matières premières nécessaires à la production d'emballage pour le vin et donc la quantité de verre usagé qui doit être traité. D'après des études sur le poids moyen des bouteilles de vin vendues en supermarché, actuellement de l'ordre de 500 g, il est estimé que l'utilisation de bouteilles plus légères peut économiser au moins 150 000 tonnes d'emballage rien qu'au Royaume-Uni. Cela représente une réduction de 28 000 tonnes des émissions de CO2 par an, l'équivalent des émissions de 2 500 voitures.
