Source text - English So who are these game-changing newcomers? They are mainly smallscale labs, which are more responsive and sometimes more competitive than Big Pharma. They also include companies whose core business is neither health nor pharmaceuticals, such as Apple, IBM and Qualcomm Technologies. Each offers devices and apps that facilitate smart medicine: pacemakers, remote insulin monitoring devices, data collection platforms, etc. The wellbeing and fitness sector also has its say in the matter, with companies like Fitbit and Withings offering connected health monitoring devices. According to Anne-Christine Marie, a partner at PWC and manager of the company’s pharmaceuticals and life sciences division, “health expenses are growing faster than GDP in a large number of economies, and access to healthcare is limited in many developing countries. In this context, the boldest companies, whatever their size, are seeing real opportunities open up. This is why we are seeing these newcomers step over national borders and set up partnerships with traditional players.”
