Serbo-Croat to English: Taken from "Besnilo" by Borislav Pekic General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - Serbo-Croat Niko ga nije gledao. Svi su bili zauzeti svojim malim “svetskim ratovima”. Svi osim generalnog direktora kelnske filijale Dojče Bank, dr Juliusa Upenkampfa. Tehnički, on nije putnik za Njujork.
Translation - English Nobody was looking at him. Everybody seemed preoccupied with their small “world wars”. Everybody except the General Director of the Köln Branch Office of the Deutsche Bank, Julius Uppenkampf PhD. He was preoccupied with his war with an airport security guard, who was guarding the exit from the first-class transit, resembling a circus usher in his brown suit with a light-brown shirt and orange tie. The airport security guard adamantly refused to let him pass through the transit exit. Julius Uppenkampf was beside himself with anger. The conference that he was traveling to from Rome – from Rome, from this senseless Foundation anniversary celebration, where he had only wasted time and almost burst a blood vessel – was scheduled to open at 11. If he did not leave immediately, he would not make it in time for the opening ceremony. The job that was waiting for him in the City was much too important for his bank to allow for even a single failure in the protocol. What he was going through at Heathrow was inconceivable in Germany – a purely English Schlamperei. Now he knew why they were up to their ears in debts and strikes. It served them right. He had no interest in their Bolshevik guests. He himself was opposed to the Chancellor’s Ostpolitik. But he was not interested in Russians even from a technical point of view. Technically speaking, it was not New York he was travelling to. For him, London was not a transit point; it was the final destination.
