Algunas piezas se hallan adornando los libros de la Sala Neruda, en el cuarto piso de este archivo; otras están en las vitrinas en un lugar de exhibición al público en el entrepiso de él, y la gran mayoría de las caracolas pequeñas están adecuadamente guardadas en cajas especiales.
Este libro es una pequeña parte de la colección correspondiente a caracolas que aparecen en poesía de Neruda, o son mencionadas por el poeta o por sus amigos, o tienen un valor histórico, simbólico o solo por ser hermosas.
Translation - Spanish Neruda’s seashell collection comprises over 9,000 marine, fresh water and land specimens from Chile, other South American countries, and the rest of the world. It is housed in the University of Chile's Andres Bello Central Archive.
Some of the shells adorn the bookshelves of the Neruda Reading Room on the Archive's fourth floor, while others are displayed in glass cases in an exhibit that is open to the public on the Mezzanine Floor. The majority of the small shells are appropriately stored in special boxes.
This book features a small portion of the collection -- seashells featuring in Neruda’s poems; others referred to by the poet or by his friends, or that have historic or symbolic value, and others that are included simply because of their beauty.

REWARDS
This section suggests informal---that is, spontaneous---rewards and forms of recognition that can be implemented with minimal planning and effort by almost any manager.
In a recent study of more than 1,500 employees in scores of work settings by Dr. Gerald H. Graham, professor of management at Wichita State University, the most powerful motivator was personalized, instant recognition from their managers. “Managers have found that simply asking for employee involvement is motivational in itself.”
In one of his studies, employees perceived that manager-initiated rewards for performance were made least often, and perceived that company-initiated rewards for presence (that is, rewards based simply on being in the organization) occurred most often. This was so even though the first type of reward has the highest motivational impact and the second type has lower impact. Graham’s study determined the top five motivating techniques:
1. The manager personally congratulates employees who do a good job.
2. The manager writes personal notes about good performance.
3. The organization uses performance as the basis for promotion.
4. The manager publicly recognizes employees for good performance.
5. The manager holds morale-building meetings to celebrate successes.
No-Cost
Recognition
Some of the most effective forms of recognition cost nothing at all. A sincere word of thanks from the right person at the right time can mean more to an employee than a raise, a formal award or a whole wall of certificates or plaques. Part of the power of such rewards comes from the knowledge that someone took the time to notice the achievement, seek out the employee responsible and personally deliver praise in a timely manner.
Research by Dr. Gerald Graham throughout the United States revealed that the type of reward employees most preferred was personalized, spur-of-the-moment recognition form their direct supervisors. In a recent survey of American workers, 63 percent of the respondents ranked “a pat on the back” as a meaningful incentive.
Since several studies on employees have shown that the greatest influence on job satisfaction is the supervisor, any manager has all the ingredients for achieving a high degree of satisfaction—and a correspondingly high level of performance—among his or her employees.

Salar de Atacama, un espejo de otra tierra
A pocos kilómetros de San Pedro, poblado principal de quienes recorren el norte chileno, se inicia el viaje a esta planicie. Pese a ser uno de los lugares más áridos del mundo, abunda la fauna y experimentarlo es un privilegio.
Cae la tarde sobre el lugar más árido del mundo. El volcán Licancabur se eleva majestuoso con su cima cónica que detenta 5.920 metros de altura y que ha sido venerada por las antiguas culturas americanas. Los colores del macizo andino pasa de tonalidades ocres a rojizas a medida que el sol se pierde en el oeste. Por instantes el escenario y las cumbres cordilleranas que se yerguen como telón de fondo es dramático para quien lo vivencia.
Nos dirigimos a la laguna Chaxa, distante a 56 kilómetros al sur de San Pedro, uno de los principales puntos en dónde se puede observar la riqueza natural que se esconde en el afamado Salar de Atacama. Por muy extraño e incluso misterioso que resulte para algunos, en el desierto más seco del mundo hay vida.
Reserva Nacional
Tras casi una hora de trayecto en vehículo y luego de cruzar el bello pueblo de Toconao, con el albo y solitario campanario de la iglesia San Lucas, la superficie lisa del desierto comienza a cambiar súbitamente. Costrones de sal aparecen y se expanden por todo lo que abarca la mirada formando una especie de roquerío de color pastel. Muy similar a un arrecife seco o a los registros existentes de la superficie del planeta Marte. El silencio inunda al visitante y sólo es interrumpido por el graznido de algún ave que sobrevuela el despejado cielo atacameño. Las montañas colindantes tienen intrigantes formaciones. ¿Cómo se formó todo esto?
En medio de tamaña soledad aparece la portería de la laguna Chaxa, perteneciente a la Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos que detenta 73.986 hectáreas protegidas. El salar de Atacama es uno de los lugares imperdibles de esta región, no sólo por su curiosa geografía, sino que por ser uno de los principales reservorios de aves en el desierto.
Un conjunto de pequeñas lagunas con elevadas concentraciones de sal -imbebibles para el ser humano- atraen a pájaros de diversas latitudes.
Acá no corre viento y la piel se siente seca. La superficie de las aguas de Chaxa se torna un espejo que refleja a los Andes con perfección.
Custodia Atacameña
Para recorrer la reserva hay que pagar una entrada a los comuneros atacameños ($2000 pesos), pueblo originario chileno, que en conjunto con Conaf (link a www.conaf.cl) ha generado una asociación para que el patrimonio natural de Atacama sea protegido y custodiado por sus propios habitantes.
Los atacameños o Likan Antai, tienen una tradición ancestral que los une al desierto y a estas alturas se han transformado en sus únicos moradores. Los primeros vestigios humanos corresponden a unos 10 mil años atrás. Los habitantes lograron sobrevivir gracias a las dulces aguas cordilleranas que formaron los oasis de la zona. En la actualidad hay menos de 100 mil herederos de la cultura atacameña, originada como tal entre el 900 y 1536 d.C., que se dedican principalmente a actividades agrarias de baja escala, al pastoreo de camélidos como llamas o alpacas y a la actividad turística.
Estamos en buenas manos. Todos los guías han sido nacidos y criados en el lugar, conocen el nombre de cada montaña y tienen los rostros curtidos por el sol. Se les nota el amor por la tierra.

Salar de Atacama: Mirror of Another Land
The trip to the Atacama salt flat starts a few kilometers away from San Pedro, the most important town and favorite watering hole of travelers to northern Chile. Despite being one of the most arid spots in the world, it has abundant wildlife and is a privilege to experience.
Twilight falls in the most arid place on earth. Licancabur Volcano's conical summit, venerated by ancient native American cultures, majestically towers 5,920 meters above sea level. The colors of this Andean massif shift from ochre to reddish tones as the sun fades to the west. The vista, with the high Andean summits as a backdrop, brings awesome moments of drama to whoever experiences it.
We head for Chaxa Lagoon, 56 kilometers south of San Pedro, one of the major vantage points for viewing the hidden natural wealth of the famous Salar de Atacama, or Atacama Salt Flat. However bizarre -- even mysterious -- some people may find it, there is in fact life in the world’s driest desert.
National Reserve
After almost an hour´s journey by car and after crossing the beautiful town of Toconao with the white, solitary bell tower of San Lucas, the desert’s smooth surface suddenly begins to change. Salt crusts appear that expand everywhere, as far as the eye can see, forming pastel-colored rock salt formations. It all looks quite similar to a dried-out reef, or to images of the Martian surface. Silence engulfs the visitor, broken only by the cry of a bird in flight amid the cloudless Atacama sky. The nearby mountains show intriguing formations. How was it all formed?
In the midst of this vast solitude, the Chaxa Lagoon guard post comes into view. The Lagoon is part of Los Flamencos (Flamingo) National Reserve, 73,986 protected hectares. The Atacama Salt Flat is a must-see in this region, not just because of its strange geography but because it is one of the most important reserves of birds in the Atacama Desert.
A group of small lagoons with very salty water, undrinkable for humans, draws birds from many different lands.
It is windless here and one’s skin feels baked. The surface Chaxa Lagoon becomes a mirror that perfectly reflects the Andes.
The Atacama Desert Stewards
To visit the reserve, the Atacameño commune charges an entrance fee ($2,000 pesos). The 'comuneros' are an indigenous Chilean tribe who have partnered with the forestry protection agency CONAF (www.conaf.cl) to protect the Atacama nature heritage with the local inhabitants as the reserve’s custodians.
The 'atacameños', or “Likan Antai”, have an ancestral tradition that binds them to the desert, and at this point in time they have become its sole inhabitants. The first human traces found here date back to some 10,000 years ago. The inhabitants managed to survive thanks to the fresh water runoffs from the mountain range that formed the region’s oases. Today the Atacameño culture, born between 900 and 1536 C.E., has fewer than 100,000 heirs. who are chiefly engaged in small-scale agriculture, grazing camelids such as llamas and alpacas, and tourism activities.
We are in good hands. All our guides are Atacama born and bred, they know the names of each mountain, their faces are deeply tanned by the sun. They exude love for their land.
