Source text - English In 1900 Crookes precipitated a solution of an active uranium salt with ammonium carbonate. The precipitate was dissolved so far as possible in an excess of the reagent, leaving an insoluble residue. This residue was many hundred times more active, weight for weight, than the original salt, and the solution containing the salt was practically inactive. At the end of a year the uranium salt had regained its activity while the residue had become inactive.
Another method of obtaining the same result is to dissolve crystallized uranium nitrate in ether. Two layers of solution are formed, one ether and the other water coming from the water of crystallization. The aqueous layer is active, while the water layer is inactive. Similarly, by adding barium chloride solution to a solution of a salt of uranium and then precipitating the barium as sulphate, the activity is transferred to this precipitate. These experiments give proof of the formation and separation of a radio-active body by ordinary chemical operations.
So, too, in the case of thorium salts a substance can be obtained by means of ammonium hydroxide which is several thousand times more active than an equal weight of the original salt. After standing a month, the separated material has lost its activity and the thorium salt has regained it. Here, again, there is the formation, separation, and loss of a radio-active body.
Conclusions Drawn
Now, these are ordinary chemical processes for the separation of distinct chemical individuals. The results, therefore, lead naturally to the conclusions: (1) it would seem that uranium and thorium are themselves inactive and the activity is due to some other substance formed by these elements; (2) this active substance is produced by some transformation in those elements, for on standing the activity is regained. This latter conclusion is startling, for it indicates a change in the atom which, up to the time of this discovery, was deemed unchangeable under the influence of such physical and chemical changes as were known to us.

Conclusioni

Source text - English Why is it that most persons are more interested in vocal than in instrumental music? Obviously because, as Richard Wagner remarks, "the human voice is the oldest, the most genuine, and the most beautiful organ of music--the organ to which alone our music owes its existence." And not only is the sound or quality of the human voice more beautiful than that of any artificial instrument, but it is capable of greater variation. Although a good artist can produce various shades of tone on his instrument, yet every instrument has a well-defined characteristic _timbre_, which justifies us in speaking, for instance, of the majestic, solemn trombone, the serene flute, the amorous violoncello, the lugubrious bassoon, and so on. The human voice, on the other hand, is much less limited in its powers of tonal and emotional coloring. It is not dependent for its resonance on a rigid tube, like the flute, or an unchangeable sounding-board, like the violin or the piano, but on the cavity of the mouth, which can be enlarged and altered at will by the movements of the lower jaw, and the soft parts--the tongue and the glottis. These movements change the overtones, of which the vowels are made up, and hence it is that the human voice is capable of an infinite variety of tone-color, compared with which Wagner admits that even "the most manifold imaginable mixture of orchestral colors must appear insignificant."

Source text - German Die Schaltung zeigt einen einfachen Transistorverstärker in Emitterschaltung. Die Widerstände R1 und R2 bilden den Basisspannungsteiler. R4 ist der Emitterwiderstand und dient zur Stabilisierung des Arbeitspunktes. R3 ist der Kollektorwiderstand; an ihm fällt die Ausgangsspannung ab.
Die Kondensatoren C1 (am Eingang) und C2 (am Ausgang) dienen zur Ein- und Auskopplung der Wechselspannung.
Der Kondensator CE überbrückt für Wechselspannung den Emitterwiderstand und "erhöht die Verstärkung um ein Vielfaches".
Zu beachten ist die richtige Polung der Elkos.
Dimensionierung
Kollektorstrom
Zunächst muss der Kollektorstrom gewählt werden. Wir wählen hier 10mA. Der Kollektorstrom hat großen Einfluss auf den Stromverbrauch und den Ausgangswiderstand der Schaltung. Auch der Rauschabstand wird durch diesen Strom beeinflusst.
Emitterwiderstand
Am Emitterwiderstand soll mindestens 1 Volt abfallen, um den Arbeitspunkt zu stabilisieren. Da wir 12 Volt Betriebsspannung zur Verfügung haben, wählen wir 2 Volt. Der Emitterwiderstand R4 errechnet sich nach dem Ohmschen Gesetz.
R4 = 2V/10mA = 200 Ω
Wir runden auf den nächsten Wert in der E12-Reihe, also 220 Ω. Damit ist die Spannung über R4 gleich 2,2 Volt.
Kollektorwiderstand
Die Spannung am Kollektorwiderstand soll gleich (Betriebsspannung - Emitterspannung) durch 2 sein.
U_R3 = (12V - 2,2V) / 2 = 4,9V
wieder mit dem Ohmschen Gesetz:
R3 = 4,9V / 10mA = 490 Ω
Wir runden auf den nächsten Wert in der E12-Reihe, also 470 Ohm.
Basisstrom
Der Basisstrom ist um die Stromverstärkung kleiner als der Kollektorstrom. Wir schätzen die Stromverstärkung auf 250. Wenn man genau arbeiten möchte, sollte man die Stromverstärkung aus dem Datenblatt des Transistors entnehmen.
