fino a questo momento
è stata l'esaltazione del genio,
di un eroismo della mente
e della creatività
che di solito noi leghiamo
all'individualità.
Il genio è sempre uno,
il genio è sempre unico
perché il modo in cui
è geniale è solo suo.
Quindi quello che io sto per dirvi
potrà sembrarvi un po' contro-narrativo
rispetto a quello
che abbiamo sentito fino adesso
perché Leonardo,
grande nume tutelare di questa assise,
è l'uomo che incarna, se vogliamo,
la sintesi di ogni genio del suo tempo
e anche del nostro, oserei dire,
perché geni così ne abbiamo visti pochi.
Io, invece, vorrei cominciare a riflettere
su un'inversione del paradigma,
diciamo così:
ragionare anziché sulla sintesi del genio,
sul genio della sintesi,
cioè come coordinare
la molteplicità delle creatività
di tante persone che hanno
visione, specialità, competenze
che, presi singolarmente, geni non sono
ma genialmente possono lavorare insieme.
Naturalmente parto,
per fare questo ragionamento,
dalla materia del mio mestiere,
che sono le storie.
Tutta la nostra vita
è costellata di storie:
da quando nasciamo
ci seguono fino a che campiamo.
Le storie occupano le librerie,
occupano gli schermi grandi e piccoli,
sin dall'infanzia.
Però non sono un materiale neutro:
noi ci abitiamo lì dentro.
Ma, per raccontare,
è necessario prima scegliere
cosa raccontare.
E il primo dato
che bisogna rilevare è che
la stragrande maggioranza delle storie
di cui noi siamo formati
sono storie di personaggi solitari.
Io ricordo la mia infanzia:
Pollicino abbandonato dalla famiglia,
nel bosco, che già lì è un trauma, no?
E deve tornare a casa
e lo fa con la mollica.
La fiaba omette il fatto
che a casa non lo vogliano
o lo abbiano, appunto,
abbandonato nel bosco.
Dolce Remì, che di famiglie
ne perde addirittura due,
vedo molti giovani presenti
che non sanno di cosa sto parlando,
questo mi fa sembrare
improvvisamente vecchia
ma mi consola il fatto
che vi sia stata risparmiata
la tragedia di Dolce Remì.
Pollyanna : povera orfanella
- simpatica eh, per carità -
però, anche lì, sola come un cane
che poi, la sua gentilezza
attira della simpatia intorno a lei,
ma parliamo sempre di una ragazzina
il cui principale dato di trama
è la solitudine.
Potrei citarvene altri ma ve li risparmio
perchè già mi sto intristendo.
Entro i sei anni, queste storie
erano già nel mio immaginario,
io che non avevo neanche la fortuna
di essere unica come figlia.
Mi ritrovavo, appunto, con mio fratello
e dovevamo dividerci
il tentativo di essere speciali
ciascuno a suo modo.
Tuttora io a volte lo chiamo
l'altro figlio di mia mamma
per sentirmi un po' speciale,
secondo quelli che erano
gli schemi della mia infanzia.
Crescendo, le cose non son migliorate:
io venivo da una famiglia cattolica,
quindi avevo anche le storie della Bibbia
a cui attingere.
Nelle storie della Bibbia c'è Mosè,
balbuziente ma tuttavia scelto da Dio.
L'unico che parla con Dio può guidare
il popolo di Israele alla Terra Promessa.
Poi c'è Davide: re pastore
che a tempo perso componeva anche salmi,
quindi anche qui siamo
sul genio multi-tasking.
C'è Sansone che combatte i Filistei
con una forza sovrumana
e li abbatte con, non si capisce perché,
una mascella d'asino.
Tutte queste figure,
si arriva poi fino a Gesù Cristo,
la specialità religiosa assoluta,
il più solitario dei solitari
che solo sulla croce, alla fine ci muore.
A quattordici anni
mi iscrivo al liceo Classico,
sì, lo so, sembra una vicenda
veramente tragica
ma in parte lo è.
Credo che collimi però con l'esperienza
dell'immaginario di tutti.
Al liceo Classico mi arriva addosso
tutta l'epica, per intero.
Achille, semidio,
indistruttibile, invincibile.
Se non fosse per quel piccolo particolare
che,comunque, nemmeno lui sa bene dov'è.
Agamennone, feroce guerriero
che arriva al punto di cinismo
di sacrificare la figlia
pur di procacciarsi un buon vento
che porti le sue navi fino a Troia.
E poi Ulisse, certo, il viaggiatore,
Dedalo, che sconfigge il Minotauro
dentro il labirinto.
Orfeo, l'investigatore degli inferi
che va per il suo amore
fino a dove vivono i morti.
In generale, sempre figure solitarie.
Se andavo al cinema
la cosa non cambiava eh!
Solo supereroi: Batman,
solo come Batman credo neanche Pollicino.
Superman,
cioè sempre drammi familiari alle spalle.
Fino a Luke Skywalker,
dentro il quale scorre potente la forza,
per arrivare a Harry Potter,
bambino magico, destinato a combattere
contro colui che non può essere nominato
e non lo nomineremo neanche qui.
Ecco, tutte queste storie
sono una sequenza di vicende
che corrispondono tutte
allo stesso schema:
figura solitaria,
che deve affrontare da solo tutto il mondo
o comunque un pericolo
davvero molto grande,
salva moltitudini in genere,
questo tipo di eroe
e lo fa in forza di un potere,
di una specialità
di una genialità che è tutta sua:
non fatevi ingannare dal fatto
che questi abbiano degli amici intorno.
Non sono storie corali:
se muore Ron Weasley,
la storia di Harry Potter continua.
Se muore Harry Potter,
della storia di Ron Weasley
non ce ne frega niente.
Quindi quando vi dicono:
"Ah, ma avevano degli amici"
si chiamano figure gregarie.
Quel tipo di schema lo ha già analizzato,
quando ha fatto, appunto,
le scansioni delle favola,
Propp: si chiama viaggio dell'eroe.
Quelle figure sono, appunto,
figure di supporto
che devono sostenere la missione dell'eroe
fino al compimento del suo obiettivo.
Ora, in mezzo a tutto questo,
io mi ricordo anche
della frase di Bertold Brecht che dice:
"beato il Paese
che non ha bisogno di eroi".
Ma come si fa a credere a questa frase
se le storie degli eroi ci connotano,
sono le prime che sentiamo da bambini,
le sole che studiamo da ragazzi,
e le uniche che ci ispirano da adulti?
Ci dicono che sono storie educative,
che servono a formarci il carattere,
ma esattamente a che cos'è che educano?
Io lo so. Lo so perchè lo vedo,
vedo di cosa è fatta la nostra società
costruita sulla base
di molte storie solitarie.
L'X Factor,
l'idea che tutto quello che si trova
di ben fatto al mondo
sia dovuto all'eccellenza
di singoli speciali,
e tutti noi che speciali non siamo,
benché avremmo voluto esserlo,
non siamo riusciti
a ottenere lo stesso risultato,
possiamo solo ammirarlo.
Ecco, le storie dell'eroe
studiate in questo modo,
sono storie ammirevoli,
ma non sono storie imitabili.
Ecco, io penso che questa cosa
non sia vera
ma non è vera proprio nella storia,
ma neanche nell'epica è vera.
La presa di Troia:
se ci si fosse dovuti fidare
dell'invincibilità di Achille
e della spietatezza di Agamennone,
quei due cretini sarebbero ancora
ciascuno nella sua tenda
odiando l'altro perché ha dovuto
rinunciare alla sua schiava
per l'orgoglio dell'altro eroe.
Quei due che litigarono, appunto,
per la questione Briseide e Criseide,

anche il genio è comunicativo
ma anche un po' la scemenza lo è.

nessun eroe di quelli lì presenti
può dire "è mia".
E purtroppo, l'epica così
non ce la raccontano.
Ho visto che c'è una mostra

mentre venivo c'era un cartello,
sembrava messo lì
tipo Candid Camera che dice:
"Ercole e le sue fatiche
nella storia dell'arte,
tutti quadri solo dell'eroe".
Ecco, le storie collettive
non ce le racconta nessuno.
Eppure è pieno, siamo circondati,
pensate a Wikipedia.
Quanti di voi qui
hanno scritto una voce di Wikipedia?

Qualcuno c'è, qualcuno c'è!
Tra i presenti, ecco, qualcuno c'è.
Wikipedia è una storia collettiva,
non ci ricordiamo magari i fondatori,
sappiamo che è un'opera
che richiede e ottiene il contributo
di milioni di persone nel mondo,
un sapere condiviso.
Penso a Messico '68,
quei due corridori assieme al bianco,
che li supporta con un gesto tutto suo,
che nel tempo di un inno nazionale
col pugno alzato in alto,
portano nelle case di tutto il mondo
il tema della discriminazione razziale.
Penso alla macchina di Turing,
allo sforzo di molti cervelli insieme,
dagli scacchisti ai matematici,
che riescono a decifrare
il codice dei nazisti,
e a far fare un salto di qualità
enorme alla guerra
che in quel momento forse senza di loro
sarebbe stata persa.
Queste storie non vengono raccontate.
La prima volta che io ho incontrato
una storia che mi ha cambiata
è stato quando ho conosciuto
"I ragazzi della via Pal"
di Ferenc Molnár.
Gruppi di ragazzi che si incontrano
per il controllo di un quartiere.
Certo, poi Nemecek muore,
è stato il primo lutto della mia vita,
ma anche lì
c'era qualcosa che non tornava:
erano tutti maschi,
e ripetevano lo schema della guerra
per il controllo di un territorio.

in quella storia,

a raccontare ai ragazzini
solo storie collettive,
perché non credano di poter essere potenti
solo uno contro l'altro,
ma imparino anche
che si può essere potenti insieme.
Perché, alla fine, la tempesta
è solo un milione di gocce d'acqua,
ma col giusto vento.

it has been the exaltation of the genius,
a heroism of mind and creativity
that we're likely
to connect with individuality.
A genius is always just one,
a genius is always unique,

with regards to what
we've heard up until now

we live in there.

you must first choose which one to tell.

is that the vast majority of stories
in which we have been brought up
are stories of solitary characters.
I remember my childhood.
Tom Thumb being abandoned
by his family in the woods -
sounds shocking, doesn’t it?
Not to mention that he walked home
by following breadcrumbs.
This fairy tale leaves out the fact
that they don't want him at home,
that he was abandoned in the woods.
Sweet Remi, who lost
two families.
I can see many young people here
don't know what I'm talking about,
which reminds me of how old I am,
but I take comfort in the fact
that you have been spared
the tragedy of Sweet Remi.
Pollyanna - a poor little orphan.
A lovely one, though.
Nevertheless, she’s all alone.
Thanks to her politeness,
sympathy gathers round her,
yet we’re talking about a little girl
whose main storyline is solitude.
I could quote more, but I'll spare you
as I am already getting sad.
By the age of six, these stories
played a vivid role in my imagination.
I didn't have the good fortune
to be an only child.
Indeed, I happened to have a brother
with whom I had to share
the attempt to be unique,
each one in a different way.
I still sometimes call him
my mama's other son
so that I can feel a little more unique
according to the outline of my childhood.
As I grew up, it didn't get any better.
I came from a Catholic family,
which meant I also had
the Bible stories to borrow from.
In the Bible, there is Moses,
stuttering yet chosen by God.
He's the only one who speaks with God
and guides the Israelis
to the Promised Land.
Then, David comes: a king shepherd
who spent his free time composing psalms.
We are again dealing
with a multitasking genius.
There's Samson, who fights the Philistines
with superhuman strength
and brings them down
with - can’t tell - a donkey jaw.
And through all these characters,
we get to Jesus Christ,
the absolute religious master,
the most solitary among the loners,
who ends up dying alone on the cross.
At the age of 14, I started attending
the classical high school.
I know, it sounds
like a truly tragic matter,
and partly it is.
I think it agrees with the experience
in everyone's imagination.
In classical high school,
all the epic poetry fell on me.
Achilles, half god,
indestructible, invincible -
were it not for that tiny detail
that he doesn't even know where it is.
Agamemnon, fierce warrior,
determined to cynically
sacrifice his daughter
just to seize the opportunity
to sail his vessels to Troy.
Then, Ulysses, the traveller;
Daedalus, who defeats
the Minotaur inside the maze;
Orpheus, the underworld investigator,
who goes, for her love,
to as far as where the dead live.
They’re all solitary characters.
And if I went to the cinema,
same story there, too!
Only superheroes - hardly was there one
as solitary as Batman, not even Tom Thumb.

Superman, always dealing
with family drama,
up to Luke Skywalker,
where power flows mightily,
to finally get to Harry Potter,
young wizard, bound to struggle
against he who cannot be named,
and we won't name him here either.
All these stories are a sequence of events
that follow the same pattern:
a solitary character
who has to face either the whole world
or an extremely serious threat.
This kind of hero
is likely to save mankind,
and he does so by calling forth
the power of a special skill
that belongs only to him.
Don't be deceived by the fact
that they have friends around.
These are not choral stories:
if Ron Weasley dies,
Harry Potter’s story goes on.
However, if Harry Potter dies,
no one is going to care
about Ron Weasley's story.
When they tell you “They had friends,"
these are what are called
gregarious characters.
This specific story pattern
has already been analyzed by Propp
when he looked at fairy tales.
It’s called "the journey of the hero."
Those characters are supporting ones,
who must support the hero's mission
in the accomplishment of his goal.
Among other things,
I recall Bertolt Brecht's quote.
He said, "Blessed be the country
that doesn't need heroes."
How can you believe in such a quote
if the stories of heroes that define us,
they're the first we hear as children,
the only ones studied as kids,
and the only ones
we're inspired by as adults?
We're told these stories are educational
and help form our personalities,
but what exactly are they teaching us?
I know.
I know because I can see
what our society is made of
based on the many individualistic stories.
The X Factor,
the generalized assumption
that whatever is well-made in the world
is thanks to the excellence
of special individuals
rather than to all of us
who aren't special
even though we wish we had been.
We have failed to achieve the same goal;
we can’t help but admire them.
So the stories of the hero,
analyzed in this way, are amazing ones,
but they can't be imitated at all.
I assume this isn't true,
not true in history nor in epic poetry.
The taking of Troy -
had we relied on Achilles’ invincibility
and on Agamemnon's ruthlessness,
those two idiots would still be
each one in his tent,
loathing one another,
as each of them had to renounce his slave
for the pride of the other.
Those two,
quarrelling because
of the Briseis and Chryseis issue,
would have never taken Troy!
It needed Ulysses,
who had a brilliant idea and said,
"If we get together
and create something that
will be the synthesis of our genius
and our nonsense kind of fades away,
according to the principle
of communicating nonsense,
genius is communicative, too,
but so is a little bit of nonsense.
He says, "This is the Trojan Horse.”
The Trojan Horse brings down
the invincible Troy,
and it is everybody’s victory
as no hero is present
that can say, "It's mine.”
Unfortunately, we are not taught
epic poetry in these terms.
I noticed there's
an exhibition right now -
I saw the sign when I was coming over.
It stood there like
a Candid Camera, saying:
"Hercules and his Labours
throughout the Arts:
All of Hero's Paintings."
No one tells us the collective stories.
Yet there’s plenty of them;
we’re surrounded.
Just think of Wikipedia.
How many of you here
have written a Wikipedia entry?
(Laugher)
There is someone, there is someone!
Among the people present, there's someone.
Wikipedia is a collective story.
Although we may not
remember the founders,
we acknowledge it's a piece of work
which requires and gets the support
of millions of people worldwide,
a mutual knowledge.
I'm recalling Mexico ’68,
the two runners and the white one
who supports them with a unique gesture,
and in the span of time
of a national anthem, their fists up,
they bring into the homes of the world
the issue of racial discrimination.
I'm thinking of a Turing machine,
to the effort of many brains together -
from chess players to mathematicians -
who can break down the Nazi code
and make a qualitative leap
against the war.
At that time, without them,
it would have been lost.
These stories are not told.
The first time I approached a story
that has changed me
was when I became acquainted with
"The Pal Street Boys” by Ferenc Molnàr.
Groups of teenagers who meet up
to take control of a neighbourhood.
Eventually, Nemecek dies.
It was the first loss of my life.
Again, there is something not quite right:
they were boys adopting a war scheme
to control a neighbourhood.
This power model
is typical of those stories.
It is a subtractive model:
if you own something, it's because
you have stolen from someone else,
and that someone else will fray,
like Talleyrand used to say.
The second time
I saw a collective history,
everything changed.
When I was 16,
I read “It" by Stephen King.
“It” by Stephen King is a collective story
where, without doubt,
all the main characters
are complete losers.
There's a bullied fat man,
there's a stutterer,
there's a black man in a world of whites,
there's a nerd,
there's a hypochondriac mama's boy,
there's a female - one of those
that in hero stories needs to be saved
but certainly aren’t.
They would have all
ended up dead in that story
if they didn't get together and kill It.
So after “It,"
I go around telling kids
only collective stories
as they've got to stop believing
that to be powerful
is to be one against the other.
They have to learn
they can be powerful together.
After all, the storm
is just a million drops of water -
with a fair wind.
