Source text - English Much of today's business is conducted across international borders, and while the majority of the global business community might share the use of English as a common language, the nuances and expectations of business communication might differ greatly from culture to culture. A lack of understanding of the cultural norms and practices of our business acquaintances can result in unfair judgements, misunderstandings and breakdowns in communication. Here are three basic areas of differences in the business etiquette around the world that could help stand you in good stead when you next find yourself working with someone from a different culture.
Addressing someone
When discussing this topic in a training course, a German trainee and a British trainee got into a hot debate about whether it was appropriate for someone with a doctorate to use the corresponding title on their business card. The British trainee maintained that anyone who wasn't a medical doctor expecting to be addressed as 'Dr' was disgustingly pompous and full of themselves. The German trainee, however, argued that the hard work and years of education put into earning that PhD should give them full rights to expect to be addressed as 'Dr'.
This stark difference in opinion over something that could be conceived as minor and thus easily overlooked goes to show that we often attach meaning to even the most mundane practices. When things that we are used to are done differently, it could spark the strongest reactions in us. While many Continental Europeans and Latin Americans prefer to be addressed with a title, for example Mr or Ms and their surname when meeting someone in a business context for the first time, Americans, and increasingly the British, now tend to prefer using their first names. The best thing to do is to listen and observe how your conversation partner addresses you and, if you are still unsure, do not be afraid to ask them how they would like to be addressed.
Translation - Romanian Marea majoritate a afacerilor din ziua de astazi se desfasoara pe plan international, dar desi marea majoritate a comunitatii globale de afaceri foloseste limba engelza ca limba comuna, nunantele si asteptarile limbajului de afaceri poate lua forme diferite de la o cultura la alta. O lipsa de intelegere a normelor si practicilor culturale ale partenerilor de afaceri pot avea ca rezultat judecati nedrepte, neintelegeri si o comunicare esuata.
Aici vom gasi trei diferente de baza in ceea ce priveste eticheta afacerilor din intreaga lume care te-ar putea ajuta sa ai o pozitie sigura cand vei lucra alaturi de cineva care provine dintr-o alta cultura.
Cum sa te adresezi cuiva
Cand am discutat despre acest subiect intr-un curs de formare, un stagiar german si un stagiar englez au avut o dezbatere aprinsa pe tema urmatoare: daca este cazul ca cineva cu doctorat sa isi foloseasca titlul de pe cartea de vizita. Stagiarul englez a sustinut cei care nu sunt medici dar au asteptarea de a fi numiti "Dr."sunt deosebiti de pomposi si plini de ei. Insa,stagiarul german a adus ca argument faptul ca munca grea si anii de educatie investiti in dobandirea doctoratului ar trebui sa le dea dreptul deplin de a se astepta sa fie numiti "Dr.".
Aceste mari diferente de opinie asupra unui lucru care ar putea fi perceput ca un fapt minor si usor de trecut cu vederea ne arata ca adesea le dam mare importanta chiar si celor mai banale lucruri. Cand lucrurile cu care noi suntem obisnuiti se fac diferit , trezesc in noi reactii foarte puternice. Foarte multi europeni continentali si latini americani prefera sa fie numiti dupa titlu , de exemplu Dl. sau Dna. urmat de numele de familie,in timp ce americanii si cu precadere englezii inclina sa utilizeze numele mic cand se intanlesc pentru prima oara intr-un context de afaceri. Cel mai bun lucru pe care il poti face este sa asculti si sa observi cum ti se adreseaza partenerul de afaceri , si daca totusi inca esti nesigur , nu ezita sa ii intrebi cum doresc sa li te adresezi.
