Medical experts don’t fully understand all the physical ramifications either. So a new University of California-San Francisco study is trying to find out.

Source text - English Leukemias comprise one third of all cancers in children. Leukemia is a disease that affects the bone marrow, blood cells and lymphatic system. Major childhood leukemiasubtypes include acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and chronic myeloid leukemias (CML). In this paper, only acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is addressed. ALL is an uncontrolled proliferation of lymphoid cells in the bone marrow. The World Health Organization (WHO) divides ALL into two subtypes: precursor B (B-lymphoblastic), the most commonand precursor T-cell (T-lymphoblastic).
There is a significant peak of ALL in children between 2 and 5 years old. However, this peak is not observed in low-income countries until industrialization occurs.4Infants under one year of age, children who are 10 or older and those with T-cell leukemia have higher risk for a poor outcome. Less than 5% of children have a genetic risk for ALL (e.g., those with Nijmegen breakage syndrome, Down syndrome, Bloom’s syndrome, or ataxia-telangiectasia) or a risk due to exposure to ionizing radiation or particular chemotherapeutic agents.
