How our brain, gut, and hormones derail our good intentions
Cravings are complicated things driven by emotions and bacteria. But people that struggle with an unhealthy hunger for junkfood can take steps to get their cravings under control.
Hunger is a signal that reminds us to eat. This built-in, biological cue ensures our survival.
A food craving, however, is a cry for comfort. It comes in the form of cookie dough ice cream, cheese fries, a cola, or some other intensely flavored concoction.
Hunger is subtle and can be satisfied by a wide range of foods. But a craving nags at us until we feed it something specific. Cravings can become so powerful that they can cloud your judgment and override your willpower.
Worst of all, the foods we typically crave aren’t in our best interest. Overwhelming evidence shows that the sweets, sodas, and snacks so many of us have grown to love are a major contributor to the chronic health problems that plague the modern world: obesity, sleep apnea, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and more.
But if we’re built to survive, why don’t we only seek well-balanced meals? Why are we compelled to eat things we know rationally are not good for us?
Eating for Dopamine
According to Elena Zinkov, a naturopathic doctor based in Bellevue, Washington, it’s because we often use foods to chase a desired emotional state rather than to satisfy an empty stomach.
“This habit gives you about 10 seconds of pleasure, but it really starts to be destructive in the long-term,” she said.
Zinkov’s new book, Crave Reset, unravels the psychology and physiology behind cravings and offers strategies to help us kick our junk food obsession for good.
When we’re suddenly struck by a food craving, it can feel beyond our control to ignore. Yet, we are also responsible for cultivating our cravings over time. This is why stopping a craving is so difficult. It’s because our brain and body become dependent on these foods, and begin to feel off without them.
Consider the brain chemicals that control our sensation of pleasure: serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin surges when we taste something good, and dopamine solidifies the behavior, ensuring that we’ll seek that food again when we’re looking for something to eat in the future.
These chemical signatures have guided our ancestors’ food preferences and meal satisfaction since forever. But this system backfires in the modern food environment, where calories are plentiful, sugar is cheap, and products are meticulously engineered to be irresistible.
“For our ancestors, food wasn’t readily available. It would either be a time of feast, or famine,” Zinkov said. “Nowadays, you drive around the corner and there’s a 7-Eleven, and there are so many options. In this environment, we’ve grown out of sync with our hunger cues.”

워싱턴주 벨뷰의 자연의학과 의사 엘레나 진코프에 따르면, 우리가 음식을 먹는 행위는 고픈 배를 채우기 위해서라기보다는 몸이 원하는 정서 상태에 도달하기 위함이다.
진코프 박사는 “이런 식습관은 10초 정도의 기쁨을 주지만 장기적으로 봤을 때 매우 파괴적인 행위”라고 밝혔다.

As China heads full force into developing AI weapons, the West needs to take a stand
Back in May 2014, Stephen Hawking, along with several other scientists, warned the world: “Success in creating AI [artificial intelligence] would be the biggest event in human history. Unfortunately, it might also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks.
“In the near term, world militaries are considering autonomous-weapon systems that can choose and eliminate targets; the U.N. and Human Rights Watch have advocated a treaty banning such weapons.”
Developing High Tech
While the international press is being hyped up these days by the world’s first AI news anchor—a computer-generated host of China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency, few are aware of an unnerving AI weapons development program at Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), one of the top weapons research facilities in China.
According to a recent South China Morning Post report, BIT has chosen 31 of the brightest students under age 18 from a pool of more than 5,000 candidates for its four-year “experimental program for intelligent weapons systems.”
These young talents have also been filtered for their unwavering patriotism or loyalty to the party-state in order to be enrolled in this high-tech field. Nowadays, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) isn’t shy about its intention to dominate the globe both economically and militarily, and technology, stolen mostly from the West, is the necessary means to achieve its objectives.
Since 2014, China has been hosting, each year, the so-called “World Internet Conference,” but this year’s conference fell a bit short in terms of its international impact as only one American executive from the chip maker Qualcomm showed up to speak, compared to last year’s crowded speaker list that included CEOs such as Tim Cook of Apple and Sundar Pichai of Google.
The ongoing trade war between the United States and China has cast a dark shadow over this year’s conference as Western technology companies within China are now seeking a safe exit and new production sites outside China.
For the past three decades, Western companies were hopeful of gaining a profitable market share in China, but that could only happen by paying a high cost in the form of technology transfers under pressure from local authorities.
These forced technology transfers have effectively reduced the competitive advantage of Western companies over time. According to a 2017 report from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, Chinese theft of intellectual property of U.S. origin costs some $600 billion annually.
To achieve the strategic plan of “Made in China 2025”—a program for China to take a dominant position in ten high-tech fields—China has launched a series of annual trade fairs, such as the World Internet Conference in Wuzhen and China International Import Expo in Shanghai (both happening in November 2018), to attract major global companies to invest in China. But this year, Western companies are wary of business adventures in China.

사우스차이나 모닝포스트 보도에 따르면, 베이징이공대학에서 향후 4년간 진행되는 ‘지능형 무기 시스템 실험 프로그램’에 지원자가 5000명을 넘어섰고, 이 중 18세 이하 31명의 소수정예가 선발됐다고 한다.

이러한 강압적 기술 이전 조치는 사실상 시간이 거듭될수록 서구 기업의 경쟁력 우위 상실로 이어졌다. 2017년 미국무역대표부 보고서에 따르면 중국의 미국 지적재산권 탈취의 가치는 연간 6000억 달러(약 676조 원)에 이른다고 한다.

The technology is changing the thinking and processes in major areas of the global economy, but it’s only the beginning.
Despite the comprehensive and seemingly endless meltdown of cryptocurrency assets, blockchain technology continues to make significant progress in its integration into major sectors of the global economy.
And although some may view blockchain—also known as distributed ledger technology (DLT)—as a failed technology, a passing fad or even a fraud, this technological innovation is nothing less than a paradigm shift on par with the internet.
Guilt by Association
Still, there’s no question that blockchain’s reputation has been tainted by the cryptocurrency debacle. In addition to its breathtaking innovations, first-generation blockchain indeed has serious flaws. It wasn’t designed to handle the long-term demands of large companies and groups. It lacks flexibility and scalability, resulting in an ever-slower consensus process, Plus, because it is permissionless and open, privacy is problematic.
The good news is that blockchain has greatly improved. The technology has gone through a variety of successful adaptions, adjustments, and second-generation development, with necessities like scalability, flexibility, permissioned rapid consensus, more secure data transmission, and system integrity and privacy added.
Long-Term Trend With Challenges
But, as with many long-term trends, the ramp up to widespread adoption hasn’t been smooth or immediate. Obstacles remain, including such challenges as identifying the most effective adoption procedures, standardizing internal and international protocols, infrastructure adjustments, industry-wide reciprocation and other practical application needs.
But on the individual organizational level, blockchain is already being adopted by those who see the value in it, in spite of the hurdles.
The rise of the cybersecurity industry may well provide a template for blockchain’s ascension. Amid many challenges and in the span of a few years, organizations of all types and sizes embraced cybersecurity technology for their own internal requirements. What’s more, that market continues to grow. Cybersecurity is projected to mushroom into a $1 trillion industry by 2021.
Likewise, there’s a very reasonable expectation that blockchain will follow and even exceed cybersecurity’s rapid growth. By 2030, Gartner projects the blockchain market to exceed $3 trillion. Given the expansion of uses for the technology, from artificial intelligence to produce tracking, it may reach that mark well before then.
Follow the Money
In fact, one of the most obvious signs that DLT is here to stay and expand is to see where major corporations are investing their capital. Many large and established companies are investing heavily in blockchain development, application, and servicing from multibillion-dollar companies such as IBM, to mainstream tax consultants Ernst & Young, to top financial institutions, to industry-leading technology consultants such as Congnizant, to name a very few.
New Blockchain Designed for Global Business
Second-generation purpose-built blockchain technologies (and there are many kinds that have been developed) are driving growing acceptance in the financial realm. One example of second-generation blockchain is Hyperledger Fabric, from the Linux Foundation. It was created by a group of companies, including leadership from IBM, and is specifically designed to “accommodate the complexity and intricacies that exist across the economic ecosystem.”
Hyperledger Fabric differs from first-generation blockchain in that it’s a community ledger made up of members or peer groups, called peer nodes. Peers are, by definition, trustworthy. That eliminates the need for time-consuming consensus, upon which blockchain relies so heavily and which severely inhibits the speed of authentication.
What’s more, peer nodes are based on a highly elastic and extensible modular architecture. That changeable feature allows pluggable implementations for participants to meet specific needs such as confidentiality, resiliency, flexibility and scalability that any given organization may require, but won’t find, in first-generation blockchain.
In other words, this latest version enables, accelerates and safeguards major financial transactions that are integral to the rapid exchange functions necessary for a capable and highly functioning global financial system. It also will virtually safeguard intellectual property rights across borders and economic zones.

하지만 장기적으로 지속되는 수많은 트렌드처럼, 블록체인이 광범위하게 채택 사용되기까지 걸리는 시간은 짧지 않을뿐더러 그 길이 순조롭지도 않다. 가장 효과적인 채택 절차 규명, 국내외 프로토콜 표준화, 인프라 조정, 산업 전반에 걸친 응답 및 기타 실질적인 적용 수요와 같은 장애물이 남아있다.
하지만 개별 기관 수준에서 블록체인의 가치를 알아본 이들은 숱한 장애물에도 불구하고 해당 기술을 이미 채택해 사용하고 있다.
사이버보안 산업의 부상은 블록체인 인기 부상의 본보기로 볼 수 있다. 헤쳐가야 할 수많은 난제와 앞으로 소요될 시간에도 불구하고 온갖 유형과 규모의 단체들이 내부 필수요건을 위해 사이버보안 기술을 수용했다. 더구나 이 사이버보안 시장은 계속 성장 중이기도 하다. 사이버보안 시장의 규모는 2021년 1조 달러(한화 약 1120조 원)까지 성장할 것으로 전망된다.
