Source text - English The warm sunshine was flooding the tent when Diana awoke from the deep sleep of exhaustion that had been almost insensibility, awoke to immediate and complete remembrance. One quick, fearful glance around the big room assured her that she was alone. She sat up slowly, her eyes shadowy with pain, looking listlessly at the luxurious appointments of the tent. She looked dry-eyed, she had no tears left. They had all been expended when she had grovelled at his feet imploring the mercy he had not accorded her. She had fought until the unequal struggle had left her exhausted and helpless in his arms, until her whole body was one agonised ache from the brutal hands that forced her to compliance, until her courageous spirit was crushed by the realisation of her own powerlessness, and by the strange fear that the man himself had awakened in her, which had driven her at last moaning to her knees. And the recollection of her abject prayers and weeping supplications filled her with a burning shame. She loathed herself with bitter contempt. Her courage had broken down; even her pride had failed her.
Translation - Korean 지칠 대로 지쳐 인사불성으로 깊은 잠에 빠져 버렸던 다이애나. 눈을 뜨니 따뜻한 햇살이 텐트 안으로 흘러 들어오고 있었다. 잠에서 깬 바로 그 순간 모든 것이 완전하게 기억났다. 넓은 공간을 조심스레 쓱 한 번 훑으니 혼자라는 것이 확실해졌다. 몸을 천천히 일으켜 앉았다. 고통에 그늘진 두 눈으로 텐트의 호화로운 설비들을 무기력하게 바라보며. 눈물은 마른 듯했다. 더 이상 흘러내릴 눈물도 없었다. 그의 발 앞에 엎드려 자비를 애원할 때 이미 모든 눈물을 다 써 버렸다. 그녀는 끝까지 씨름했다. 일방적인 분투에 그만 지쳐 그 품 안에서 속수무책이 되어버릴 때까지. 받아들임을 강요하는 잔인한 두 손에 온몸이 만신창이가 될 때까지. 스스로의 무력에 대한 깨달음으로, 또 남자가 깨어 낸 낯선 두려움으로, 자신을 결국은 무릎 꿇고 신음하게 만든 그 두려움으로, 대담했던 정신이 이만 부서져 내릴 때까지. 그 비참한 호소와 눈물 젖은 애원이 떠오르자 부끄러움으로 온몸이 화끈거렸다. 자신이 지독히도 한심하고 혐오스러웠다. 용기도, 자존심도 무너져 내렸다.

Source text - English The weather the next day was equally fair, so that it seemed an imprudence not to make sure of AiguesMortes. Nimes itself could wait; at a pinch, I could attend to Nimes in the rain. It was my belief that Aigues-Mortes was a little gem, and it is natural to desire that gems should have an opportunity to sparkle. This is an excursion of but a few hours, and there is a little friendly, familiar, dawdling train that will convey you, in time for a noonday breakfast, to the small dead town where the blessed Saint-Louis twice embarked for the crusades. You may get back to Nimes for dinner; the run - or rather the walk, for the train doesn't run - is of about an hour. I found the little journey charming, and looked out of the carriage window, on my right, at the distant Cevennes, covered with tones of amber and blue, and, all around, at vineyards red with the touch of October. The grapes were gone, but the plants had a color of their own. Within a certain distance of Aigues-Mortes they give place to wide salt-marshes, traversed by two canals; and over this expanse the train rumbles slowly upon a narrow causeway, failing for some time, though you know you are near the object of your curiosity, to bring you to sight of anything but the horizon. Suddenly it appears, the towered and embattled mass, lying so low that the crest of its defences seems to rise straight out of the ground; and it is not till the train stops, close before them, that you are able to take the full measure of its walls.
Translation - Korean 다음날도 날씨가 화창했다. 에그모르트(Aigues Mortes)를 내 눈으로 확인해 보지 않을 수 없었다. 님(Nimes)은 급할 게 없었다. 혹 비가 오더라도 볼 각오가 되어 있었으니. 내 머릿속에서 에그모르트란 작은 보석과 같았기에 그것이 찬란하게 빛날 기회를 주고 싶은 것이 당연했다. 몇 시간 남짓한 짧은 여행이 될 것이다. 친절하고 친근하지만 움직임은 꽤나 굼뜬 작은 기차를 타고, 성왕 루이가 두 차례에 걸쳐 십자군 원정 출발지로 삼은 죽은 소도시로 향한다. 도착하면 한낮의 늦은 아침을 먹기 딱 좋은 시간이 된다. 저녁은 님으로 돌아와서 먹을 수도 있다. 약 한 시간 정도만 달리면(이 기차라면 '걸으면'이란 표현이 더 적절할지 모른다.) 도착하는 거리니까. 난 이 여정이 꽤나 매력적으로 느껴졌다. 오른편 창밖을 바라보면 저 멀리 호박색과 파란색으로 뒤덮인 세벤(Cevennes)이 있었고, 여기저기에 10월의 손길로 붉게 물든 포도밭도 보였다. 포도는 이미 없었지만 잎이 가진 특유의 색이 있었다. 에그모르트에서 그리 멀지 않은 지점엔 두 운하를 사이에 둔 염습지들이 드넓게 자리하고 있다. 광활한 이곳을 지날 땐 좁은 둑길 위를 달리게 되는데, 느린 속도로 덜커덩거리며 나아가다 한동안 멈추기도 한다. 하지만 이때 쯤이면 어느덧 내 호기심의 대상에 가까워졌다는 걸 알 수 있다. 내 눈 앞에 지평선을 완전히 가려 버릴 그것에. 그러다 보면 어느 순간 모습을 드러낸다. 탑과 성가퀴로 이루어진 커다란 무언가가. 너무 낮게 자리해 탑 머리가 마치 땅에서 바로 솟아난 것처럼 보이는 것이. 기차가 앞으로 다가가 멈춘다. 그때, 비로소 성벽의 진면목을 확인하게 된다.
