CHAPTER ONE
“What a perfect day,” I said.
Winter had thawed in Boston and spring was upon us. The campus had come alive, buzzing with college students, tourists, and city natives.
Many still wore their graduation gowns from this afternoon’s ceremony, the entirety of which I was still processing. Everything felt surreal, from saying bittersweet goodbyes to friends to the anticipation of facing real world problems in the days ahead. A blur of emotions whirled through me. Pride, relief, anxiety. But what I felt most was happiness. To be in this moment. To have Marie by my side.
“It is, and no one deserves it more than you, Erica.” Marie Martelly, my mother’s best friend and my own personal lifesaver, gave my hand a little squeeze and hooked her arm into mine.
Tall and slender, Marie towered over my petite frame. Her soft skin was the color of cocoa and her brown hair was twisted into dozens of short dreads, a style that expressed both her eternal youth and eclectic style. From the outside, no one would suspect that she was the only mother I’d had for nearly a decade.
I told myself over the years that not having parents was sometimes better than having the kinds of parents I heard about and occasionally met. My classmates’ parents could be so overbearing. Physically there but emotionally absent, or old enough to be my grandparents and suffering from a serious generational gap. Excelling seemed vastly easier when I was the only person putting pressure on myself to succeed.
Marie was different. Over the years, she had always offered the perfect measure of support. She listened to my friend drama and my moaning about work and finals, but she never pushed me. She knew how hard I already pushed myself.
As we walked down the tiny paths that wove through the Harvard campus, a soft breeze blew through the full leafy trees, rustling quietly above us.
“Thank you for being there for me today,” I said. “Don’t be ridiculous, Erica! I wouldn’t miss this
for the world. You know that.” She smiled down at me and winked. “Plus I always enjoy a little trip down memory lane. I can’t remember the last time I was on campus. Makes me feel young again!”
I laughed at her enthusiasm. Only someone like Marie could visit her alma mater and feel younger, as if no time had passed.
“You’re still young, Marie.”
She sighed softly. “Oh, I suppose. Life moves too fast though. You’ll figure that out, soon enough.”
“You ready to celebrate?”
I nodded. “Absolutely. Let’s go.”
We stepped outside the campus gates and hailed a cab that took us over the Charles River into Boston. A few minutes later we pushed through the heavy wooden doors of one of the best steakhouses in the city. Compared to the sunny streets, the restaurant was dark and cool, and a noticeable air of refinement floated over the quiet murmur of the evening’s patrons.

CHAPITRE 1
Cela me rajeunit » !
Son enthousiasme me fit rire. Seule
« Oui, probablement. Le temps passe tellement vite cependant. Tu t’en rendra compte suffisamment tôt ».
« Prête à faire la fête » ?
J’acquiesçai d’un signe de tête. « Tout à fait, allons-y ».

Scientific research tells us there are two main brain-chemical systems.
Medically speaking, these chemicals are the neurotransmitters involved in love. These chemicals are monoamines and nonapeptides. All behaviors that we think of as love-related are based on the effects of these two chemical systems on the brain.
The monoamines family includes catecholamines (dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine) and serotonin. These are the “reward chemicals,” but the effect is associated with other feelings as well; for our purposes here, monoamines are responsible for the “falling-in-love” or “romantic” phase of love. We’ll talk more about monoamines in a later chapter, because they have a lot to do with the falling-in-love phase of love. Monoamines affect the early phase of love, the one that shows up in that heady rush of feeling makes our pulse race and our minds refuse to allow us to fall asleep even though it’s way past bedtime.
Nonapeptides, namely oxytocin and vasopressin, are the chemical substances responsible for the feeling of permanent love, or what I call the True Love phase. I’ll leave it there for now, but you’ll learn a great deal more about these chemicals in later chapters, when we’ll be discussing the all-important True Love phase of love. We might say that learning how to achieve True Love is worth the wait!

The 6,000-year management plan will have utterly defeated Satan, which means that God will have recovered the original image of man following his creation, and as such, the original intention of God will have been fulfilled. In the beginning, before mankind was corrupted by Satan, mankind led a normal life on earth. Later, when he was corrupted by Satan, man lost this normal life, and so there began the work of God’s management, and the battle with Satan to recover the normal life of man. Only when the 6,000-year work of God’s management comes to an end will the life of all mankind officially begin on earth, only then will man have a wonderful life, and God will recover the purpose of creating man in the beginning, as well as the original likeness of man. And so, once he has the normal life of mankind on earth, man will not pursue becoming an overcomer or being made perfect, for man will be holy. The victory and perfection spoken of by man are the objectives given to man to pursue during the battle between God and Satan, and they exist only because man has been corrupted. It is by giving you an objective, and causing you to pursue this objective, that Satan will be defeated. Asking you to be an overcomer or to be made perfect or used is requiring that you bear testimony in order to shame Satan. In the end, man will lead the life of normal man on earth, and man will be holy, and when this happens, will they still seek to become overcomers? Are they not all creatures? Being an overcomer and being a perfected one are both directed at Satan, and the filthiness of man. Is this “overcomer” not in reference to the victory over Satan and the hostile forces? When you say that you have been made perfect, what in you has been made perfect? Isn’t it that you have divested yourself of the corrupt satanic disposition, so that you can achieve the supreme love of God?

Indigenous Populations in Africa
The right of self-determination under international law is not synonymous to a unilateral right of self-determination and secession. It is inappropriate to suggest that the human right of self-determination should not be affirmed in the Declaration, because it can be misrepresented as conferring a unilateral right of self-determination and possible secession upon a specific subset of the national populace, thus threatening the political unity and the territorial integrity of any country. Any human right could possibly be “misrepresented”, but this would not be a valid basis for opposing that right.
The report of the Commission on Indigenous Populations/Communities clearly asserts that the right of self-determination is no threat of any kind to the existing territorial integrity of African states:
“Collective rights, formulated as rights of ‘peoples’, should be available to sections of populations within the nation states, including indigenous peoples but the right to self-determination as included in the provisions of the OAU Charter as well as the African Charter cannot be understood to sanction secessionist sentiments. Self-determination of peoples must therefore be exercised within the inviolable national boundaries of the State with due regard for the sovereignty of the nation state.
A large number of African states share this modern and functional understanding of the right to self-determination. This is, for example, the case of Section 235 of the South African Constitution, which states:
“The right of the South African people as a whole to self-determination, as manifested in this Constitution, does not preclude, within the framework of this right, recognition of the notion of the right of self-determination of any community sharing a common cultural and language heritage, within a territorial entity in the Republic or in any other way, determined by national legislation”.
Furthermore, there is not one single indigenous community in Africa that is claiming statehood or threatening its country with secession. On the contrary, these peoples or communities are claiming aspects of the right to self-determination that do not threaten national boundaries, including the right to full participation in national life, the right to local self-government, the right to be consulted and to participate in the making of certain laws and programs, the right of recognition and appreciation of their traditional structures along with the freedom to enjoy and promote their cultures.
