Source text - French C’est sans doute une longue familiarité avec le terroir natal qui est à l’origine de la collection de Marcel Poulet. Toute personne arrivant en Puisaye sent combien la production de grès a marqué le paysage et les activités, combien cette poterie, résultat de la conjonction d’éléments essentiels (la terre, le bois), contient et résume à elle seule l’essence même de cette région.
Cette production active de la fin de l’époque médiévale jusqu’au XXème siècle dans le domaine culinaire, occupe une place privilégiée dans le contexte patrimonial national. Elle fut exportée dans le bassin parisien, dans le pays de Bocage de l’Ouest de la France et jusqu’en Amérique, dans la vallée du Saint-Laurent, en Louisiane et aux Antilles, elle a même connu une production d’apparat au XVIème siècle avec les « bleus » dits de Saint-Vérain.
C’est cette partie de la production qui fit connaitre l’art du grès poyaudin. En effet, longtemps en matière de céramique, l’attention des chercheurs s’est presque exclusivement portée sur les productions dites artistique, c’est à dire décorées ; l’histoire des techniques, des modes de vie ou « cultures matérielles » ayant encore bien du mal à se mêler à la « culture ».
Il est vrai qu’il paraît difficile de comprendre qu’un simple pot, brut et sans décor, destiné à un usage quotidien puisse être beau. Aussi devons-nous une reconnaissance infinie à Marcel Poulet d’avoir collecté pour nous ces 279 pièces utilitaires, significatives de la production de grès de Puisaye entre le XVIIème et le XXème siècle et représentant la typologie dans sa globalité.
La collection de Marcel Poulet, acquise par la mairie de Saint-Amand en Puisaye en 1992 dans le cadre du F.R.A.M. de Bourgogne (Fonds Régional d’Acquisition des Musées) et présentée aujourd’hui au Château, fut constituée selon des critères scientifiques étayés par des recherches archéologiques, dont le matériel a été récemment légué à la commune par Marcel Poulet.
Cette collection, confortée par l’embryon de collection de grés décoratif de Carriès et de son école, permettront à la municipalité de faire prendre conscience aux poyaudins de l’importance de la production parmi le foisonnement des céramiques des XIXème et XXème siècle et, forte de leur aide, de mener de front des opérations essentielles à la sauvegarde du patrimoine.
Translation - English Marcel Poulet’s long familiarity with his native region is probably what inspired him to collect pottery. Anyone coming to Puisaye can immediately sense how much the landscape and local activities have been influenced by stoneware production. This type of local pottery, created by combining the natural elements of wood and earth, epitomises the very essence of the region.
The period of active stoneware manufacture from the middle ages to the end of the 20th century in the cookware domain, has a special place in our national heritage. The pieces were exported to the regions around Paris, to the agricultural west of France and all the way across the Atlantic. These included ‘The Saint Lawrence Valley’ in Quebec, Louisiana in the United States, and the Antilles in the Caribbean.
During the 16th century production widened to include ornamental pieces, known as the “Bleus” of Saint-Vérain. It is these pieces that made the stoneware famous, with its distinctive cobalt colour. For a long time, research in ceramics focused almost exclusively on pieces with artistic value, i.e. decorated. Techniques, how pieces were used or “material cultures” were not deemed worthy of being considered on a par with “culture”.
It may seem difficult to understand why a basic pot, lacking in decoration and designed for daily life could be considered beautiful, and so we owe a great debt to Marcel Poulet for having collected over 279 examples of everyday Puisaye stoneware. These date between the 17th and 20th century, representing the range of pieces almost in its entirety.
Marcel Poulet’s collection was bought by the mayor of Saint-Amand en Puisaye in 1992, with government funding to the Bourgogne region (Fonds Régional d’Acquisition des Musées) and is now displayed in Saint-Amand Hall. The collection was assembled using scientific criteria and archaeological research, the equipment for which was recently donated to Saint-Amand by Marcel Poulet.
This display is supplemented by an embryonic collection of pieces by Carriès and his pupils. This acts as an opportunity for the local people to fully appreciate the importance of the local ceramic manufacture for the overall abundant production of the 19th and 20th centuries and to assist in the safeguarding of the local heritage.

Translation - English My dearest one lay naked, knowing my affliction,
Wore just her finest jewels, betraying her predilection.
Her rich attire adorned her seductive air,
Reminiscent of Moorish slave girls with flowers in their hair.
The jewels dance teasingly, chiming in sound,
This world of shining metals, stones sharp and round.
It renders me euphoric, I adore the sight,
Of the unity that comes from mixing phonemes with the light.

I graduated with my BA in French and Translation from the University of East Anglia in the UK in 2017, for which I received a first class and also did several volunteer assignments for two museums in Strasbourg. After graduating, I moved to the south of France to teach it as a subject (alongside English) at the Université Nice Sophia Antipolis, where I currently work. Before beginning my career in the languages and teaching field, I worked as a professional jeweller for almost 10 years, so you could call that my other specialist subject! I also work in tourism, doing simultaneous interpretations on vineyard tours for English speaking holidaymakers.
