Soluções para tirar da rua sem-abrigo não contemplam na maioria das vezes os bichos que os acompanham para todo o lado, apesar de especialistas reconhecerem a importância da relação de quem não tem casa com o seu animal da estimação.
O cão anuncia-lhe a chegada. É pequeno, preto e avança decidido, parecendo indicar o caminho a quem segue. Atrás dele surge uma mulher, vinda do meio da multidão que cruza o Chiado nos dias que antecedem o Natal. Vem com cobertores nas mãos, ar cansado e olhos no chão. São duas da tarde e ainda não comeu nada. "Ainda não fiz dinheiro, quando fizer, logo como". É mais um sem-abrigo que engrossa a lista de pessoas que vivem na rua em Lisboa. Quando se lhe pergunta porque é que não dorme num dos abrigos para quem não tem casa, a resposta é imediata: "Porque não me deixam entrar com o meu cão, dizem que não podem estar lá animais. E eu prefiro ficar na rua que ficar sem ele".
Translation - English In most cases, solutions to keeping the homeless off the streets do not take into account their accompanying animals, despite experts having recognized the importance of relationships between homeless people and their pets.
The dog announces her arrival. It is small, black and advances determinedly, appearing to lead the way to the person who is following it. Behind it, a woman emerges from the midst of the crowds criss-crossing the streets of Chiado, the wealthy central Lisbon shopping district, in the days preceding Christmas. Blankets in her arms, her eyes on the ground, she has an air of exhaustion about her. It’s 2pm and she hasn’t yet eaten. “I haven’t made any money yet. When I make some, I’ll eat.” Yet another person lengthening the list of people living on the streets of Lisbon. When you ask her why she wasn’t staying at one of the homeless shelters, her immediate response is, “Because they won’t let me in with my dog. They say animals aren’t allowed. And I’d rather stay on the streets than go without him.”

Source text - Portuguese Quando era professor, Olivio Jekupe precisava provar para os alunos que tinha conhecimento da disciplina para que os estudantes passassem a respeitá-lo. "Quando eles duvidavam, eu começava a falar difícil e eles não entendiam nada", relembra sobre a época em que precisou lecionar para se sustentar como estudante de filosofia. Hoje, é Olivio que se preocupa com a preparação dos professores. Na semana em que lança seu 12. livro de literatura, o índio quarani defende a difusão das obras escritas por indígenas como forma de embasar o estudo da história e da cultura desses povos nas escolas.

Olivio permaneceu na cidade e se consolidou como escritor. Atualmente, não só escreve como também incentiva outros índios a tomarem o rumo da literatura. Assim, ele acredita que vai conseguir derrubar as mentiras que foram ditas contra os povos da terra ao longo dos últimos séculos. Inverdades concretas nos monumentos que adornam a cidade de São Paulo. "É um absurdo. Você passa em Santo Amaro e vê o Borbo Gato. Depois tem o Anhangueira. A história mostra que eles eram grandes heróis porque matavam índios" reclama. "É por isso que a literatura feita pelo índio aos poucos vai chegando e os escritores indígenas vão começar a desmascarar essa coisa".
Translation - English During his years as a teacher, Olivio Jekupe needed to prove his knowledge of his subject to his pupils to gain their respect. “When they were doubting me, I would switch to a higher register and they wouldn’t understand a word”, says Olivio, remembering the times when, as a philosophy student, he had had to teach for a living. Today, it’s Olivio worrying about the teachers’ education. An indigenous Guarani himself, he defends the increasing appearance on the curriculum of of works by the indigenous peoples of Brazil as a way of grounding the study of their history and culture in Brazilian schools.

Olivio stayed in the city and established himself as a writer. Nowadays, he not only writes, but also inspires other indigenous Brazilians to take up their literary vocation. In doing so, he believes he will succeed in dismantling the lies told to the “Povos da Terra”, the indigenous peoples, throughout the last centuries. Concrete untruths manifest themselves in the monuments adorning the city of São Paulo. “It’s absurd. Take a walk down to the old neighbourhood of Santo Amaro and you can’t miss the statues of the “bandeirantes”, the Portuguese flag-bearing explorers Borba Gato and Anhanguera, notorious for their slaughter of the indigenous peoples – yet precisely these deeds contribute to their place in History as “heroes”, he complains. “That’s why indigenous literature will gradually gain recognition and the indigenous writers will start to debunk the myths.”

A noite se antecipou. Os homens ainda não a esperavam quando ela desabou sobre a cidade em nuvens carregadas. Ainda não estavam acesas as luzes do cais, no Farol das Estrelas não brilhavam ainda as lâmpadas pobres que iluminavam os copos de cachaça, muitos saveiros ainda cortavam as águas do mar, quando o vento trouxe a noite de nuvens pretas.
Os homens se olharam e como que se interrogavam. Fitavam o azul do oceano a perguntar donde vinha aquela noite adiantada no tempo. Não era a hora ainda. No entanto, ela vinha carregada de nuvens, precedida do vento frio do crepúsculo, embaciando o Sol, como num milagre terrível.
A noite veio, nesse dia, sem música que a saudasse. Não ecoara pela cidade a voz clara dos sinos do fim da tarde. Nenhum negro aparecera ainda de violão na areia do cais. Nenhuma harmónica saudava a noite da proa de um saveiro. Não rolara sequer pelas ladeiras o baticum monótono dos candomblés e macumbas. Porque então a noite já chegara sem esperar a música, sem esperar o aviso dos sinos, a cadência das violas e harmónicas, o misterioso bater dos instrumentos religiosos? Porque viera assim antes da hora, fora do tempo?
Translation - English Storm
Night arrived early. The men weren’t expecting it when it fell upon the city, cloaked in heavy clouds. The lights on the dockside had not yet been lit and at the Farol das Estrelas tavern there was no sparkle from the lanterns usually glinting on the glasses of Cachaça. A profusion of saveiros, traditional small sailing boats, were still crossing the waters, when the wind brought the night of black clouds.
The men looked at each other questioningly. The stared out at the blue of the ocean asking where the premature night had come from. It wasn’t time yet. Yet it had arrived, loaded with clouds, preceded by the cold twilight wind, misting up the sun like a terrible miracle.
The night came, on that day, without any music to greet it. No late afternoon echoes of the bells’ clear voice thoughout the city. No black man with violin had yet appeared on the sandy quayside. No harmonica greeted the night from a saveiro’s prow. Not even down the sloping alleys had the monotonous beat of the priestesses of candomblé and macumba sounded out. So why had the night already arrived, without waiting for the music, without waiting for the bells’ signal, the cadence of guitars and harmonicas, the mysterious beating of the religious instruments? Why had it come so soon, so ahead of time?
