Mercy Corps, with the financial assistance of Asiatan, has been working with smallholder farmers in Ya’an and Mianyang, Santai county, Sichuan province, to increase market accessibility for smallholder farmers with the goal of increasing the market value of agricultural products and improving income. The Mercy Corps team, in collaboration with local farmers, has explored emerging agricultural market channels and the ways in which new models in e-commerce have improved circulation linkages, reduced transaction costs, strengthened the competitive abilities of smallholder farmers and, finally, lead to increases in income. The expected outcomes of this project are: 1. To guide production in conformity with current market demands by improving awareness of product quality control and consumer need; 2. To improve the knowledge and skills of smallholder farmers in e-commerce marketing techniques and support them in testing both online and offline sales models. In order to effectively reach the program’s objectives, while simultaneously engaging e-commerce experts and business people within the rural community, Mercy Corps invited Chengdu Zhege XinXian E-commerce Services Company to provide comprehensive, systematic and operational training to smallholder farmers in Ya’an and Santai County through a workshop entitled, “Market Accessibility Skills Training for Smallholder Farmers”.
