Other swamis from various parts of the world wanted to see Rome and so I started to take them, group after group. As I walked them around, I spoke with a secret pride of the ‘achievements’ of the church. We were not the only people on the planet able to build beautiful things, was one of my points. At one place a swami turned to me as I narrated the names of the apostles, ‘Remember, swami, our god is the only true God and he resides in Guruji.’ | Translation - Polish
Inni swami z różnych części świata też chcieli zobaczyć Rzym, więc zacząłem ich tam zabierać, grupę za grupą. Kiedy ich oprowadzałem, opowiadałem z ukrytą dumą o „osiągnięciach” kościoła. Nie byliśmy jedynymi ludźmi na tej planecie budującymi piękne rzeczy, i to między innymi chciałem im przekazać. W pewnym momencie swami zwrócił się do mnie, kiedy wymieniałem imiona apostołów:
– Pamiętaj swami, nasz bóg jest jedynym prawdziwym Bogiem i mieszka on w Gurudżim.

Tożsamość jest cierpliwie konstruowaną
opowieścią, pełną sensów i odniesień,
dzięki której opisujemy naszą
przynależność do świata, który nas
otacza. Odbijamy się w lustrze historii,
słuchamy mniej lub bardziej zmyślonych
baśni i w ten sposób upewniamy
się, że za nami stoją setki, tysiące ludzi
i że – chcąc nie chcąc – niesiemy ich
pamięć i doświadczenie w przyszłość.
Tożsamość to aktywne porządkowanie
doświadczenia w taki sposób, żeby powstały
nasze własne więzi z miejscem,
ludźmi, kulturą. | Translation - English
Identity is a patiently constructed
story, full of meanings and references,
thanks to which we describe our
belonging to the world around us.
We reflect in the mirror of history,
listen to more or less contrived fairy
tales, and that’s how we make sure
that hundreds, thousands people
stand behind us and that – willy-nilly
– we carry their memory and experience
to the future. Identity is an active
ordering of experience in a way
that it creates our own bonds with
the place, people, culture. |
