Dear District Board Member,
Today the families at Crown Point Jr. Music Academy (CPJMA) received some disturbing and disheartening news. Like other District families, we’ve been hearing about looming budget cuts for many weeks, but today we’ve learned the District is pulling funding from the very heart of our school – our Music programs.
In the past weeks we’ve learned budget cuts will cost us our Librarian, School Nurse, and full-time Office Administrator; and we’ve even been told we’ll lose at least one teacher. In spite of all the cuts, and consequent sacrifices our school will have to make, we had been assured our standing as a Music Magnet school was sound, and funding for our Music and Suzuki Violin programs would not be taken away.
Today that changed. This morning we were informed by our Principal, Barbara Boone, the District has chosen not to fund our Music and Suzuki programs, and we’ll also be losing our Magnet Resource Coordinator.
Beyond our identity as a Music Magnet, CPJMA is the very model of a successful school, both in its current state, and in how it got here. Not long ago the District decided Crown Point Elementary was no longer worth running. The school was under-served, under-populated, and under-performing. In an effort to save the school, the Music Magnet program was established – opening opportunities for children all around the District, not just the local neighborhood.
