English to Portuguese: Google Pixel phones and Home speaker take on Siri and Echo General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: IT (Information Technology)
Source text - English latest smartphones and first voice-activated speaker.
The two Pixel handsets are the first mobiles to trigger Google Assistant by pressing their home buttons, somewhat like Apple's Siri.
The Home speaker lets the same artificial intelligence tool be controlled without use of a touchscreen. It rivals Amazon's Echo.
Google also unveiled new virtual reality kit and a 4K media streamer.
Google's chief executive Sundar Pichai said we are heading towards an "AI-first world"
The Assistant has two key advantages over rival systems:
- it can hold a conversation, in which one question or command builds on the last, rather than dealing with each request in isolation;
- it draws on Google's Knowledge Graph database, which links together information about more 70 billion facts, and has been in use for four years.
However, the US company will have to overcome privacy concerns and convince users that chatting to a virtual assistant has advantages over using individual apps.
Google already offers the Assistant as part of its chat app Allo - but the software has been installed on only a small minority of phones that support it as yet.
Smarter phones
The decision to brand the phones with the Pixel name, rather than Nexus, marks a break with the past, and is intended to signify that they were designed in house rather than by another manufacturer.
The devices come in two sizes - with either a 5in (12.7cm) or 5.5in (14cm) OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen - but otherwise have similar specs.
Google said the 12.3 megapixel rear camera they share was the best on the market - basing its claim on an independent test by DxO Labs. And as further enticement, it is offering unlimited storage for the photos.
Google also drew attention to the devices' glass-and-aluminium bodies, and specifically noted they featured a headphone jack - unlike Apple and Motorola's latest models.
Unlike most Android phones, the Pixel and Pixel XL will automatically install operating-system and security updates as soon as they are released.
But it is their ability to access Assistant as a standalone facility that makes them unique, at least for now.
"It goes one step further than tapping on the microphone in the Google Search app and getting a bunch of responses - it gives a conversational feel to what you are doing," Google executive Mario Queiroz told the BBC.
Users can, for example, ask for what films are playing at nearby cinemas, and then follow up the reply by saying: "We want to bring the kids," to narrow down the selection.
"Having a conversation - one where you ask a question and then follow-on questions - is a much more natural way to interact, and you would think that would offer a better user experience," said Brian Blau, from the consultancy Gartner.
"But we haven't had that type of system offered at the mass market level before, so it's hard to say how well it actually do."
The Pixel will start at £599 and the Pixel XL at £719 when they go on sale on 20 October.
- pode manter uma ligação enquanto uma pergunta ou comando é solicitado, ao invés de lidar com cada solicitação isolada;
Translation - English Android, iOS or Windows Phone: how to choose your next smartphone?
The three most popular operating systems for smartphones are Android, iOS and Windows Phone. Each has its own peculiarities - battery consumption, integration with app, the number of applications available in stores, usability - that can be decisive when deciding for a certain phone.
By simply considering aspects of OS’s, UOL Technology lists which should be considered before choosing a certain operating system.
1. Apps
The amount of applications in Android (http://zip.net/bbrVdt) and Apple (http://zip.net/blrTDJ) Stores are still much bigger than the apps available in the Windows Phone Store (http://zip.net/bfrVcv). While the first two OS’s have already exceeded the millions, according to IDC, the Microsoft system is around 500.000, according to the company itself.
The quality of applications also is something important to be mentioned in this regard. While versions for Android and iOS are usually filled with lots of resources, the Windows Phone tend to be more spartan, with fewer customization options. A good example is WhatsApp, which usually launches new features in Android version first. Then iPhone and finally for Windows Phone.
2. Integration with services
Windows Phone is connected to Microsoft, Android to Google and Iphone to Apple. Thus, frequent users of the platforms and services of the three companies tend to better identify the respective operating systems.
For those used to Office Suite (Word, Excel), or have Outlook.com account (formerly Hotmail), OneDrive, Xbox network (such as Live and Music), Windows Phone is the ideal OS.
The same logic applies to those dependent on Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube, Maps (among other Google platforms) for Android. With less popular services, iTunes, iCloud and Safari users will do better with iOS.
3. Usability
When it comes to ease of use, Windows Phone comes out ahead of competitors. With Live Tiles (the squares of the interface) and self explanatory button names, using a phone with Microsoft's system for the first time is a simple task.
iPhone also stands out for its excellent usability. The layout of elements allows a very low learning curve for users. Android can be confusing to less experienced users - in addition, as each smartphone manufacturer like to customize the systems, at first glance the interface may look like a mess.
4. Customization
Android is the system that allows the user to do whatever he wants with it. Change icons, change the home screen. You can change (with more or less work) absolutely everything in the OS. It even allows download and use, without major headaches, of applications outside the official store.
Windows Phone and iOS are systems like "switch on, use it". Closed and more restricted towards customization, both OS’s allow few changes to their interfaces and in the usability created by Microsoft and Apple.
5. Security
There are several factors that make Android less secure than its competitors. Being highly customizable, allowing changes of users and smartphone manufacturers and have a store with less control than competitors are some of them. Its popularity also attracts more hackers.
Apple and Microsoft have a stronger security policy and are very restrict of what is published in their shops. What is downloaded there has a certificate of safety. Other point that counts in their favor is that as they are in less smartphones, they are secondary targets of malicious programs and developers with bad intentions.
6. Price
iOS means "iPhone", and a smartphone like that in Brazil, isn't sold for less than R$ 1.500 (USD 500,00) (iPhone 5C, with 8 GB of internal memory). Smartphones using Android and Windows Phone can be found for less than R$ 400 (USD 150,00).
When compared, low budget mobiles of Microsoft and Google (especially from manufactures like LG and Samsung) have similar hardware running on them. It's possible to buy, for under R$ 400 (USD 150,00), dual SIM card phones, with digital television, dual core processor (1.2 GHz) and 3 megapixel camera.

Experience
Years of experience: 7. Registered at ProZ.com: Sep 2016.
Let me introduce myself: my name is Francis, brazilian, always loved reading and writing, and so another passion came into my life: understanding different books and articles in their original version, which in most cases were in english.
As I worked with IT for some 20 years already, the english language became natural to me, and the correct understanding of it was crucial to be a better professional and have more knowledgement about this particular area.
When internet became more popular, I created a personal blog, to write about random thoughts, and also, we had the "biggest database" on our screens, so researching about all kind of subjects was really exciting, but of course, the best materials were usually in english as well, so another reason to have the best understanding about this language again.
Music was always something that I really loved, and Blues and Jazz were my favourite styles, and since they are more popular in the US, another point to english, because I always wanted to understand the lyrics.
Movies and series also were on my "wishlist" since from the beggining: to watch them without the use of subtitles, and then some long hours of watching them, to finally being able to fully understand what was being said and my complete comprehension.
And the biggest experiences, that certified me as someone really fluent in the english, were my travels to the USA, United Kingdom, and some time later, living in New Zealand and Australia, with locals, and so, talking with them in english the entire day already was natural... Even my thinking already was in english, so I think that I really became fluent in english after some good time training along all of my life!
A new experience that I'm also proud is being the official translator from English to Brazilian Portuguese to these two websites:
www.warmshowers.org
www.bewelcome.org
It's a volunteer job, but since I used these websites to get hosted in other people house's while I was travelling, I really wanted to help them back, and I'm really happy being able to make the community grow even bigger!
With all this being said, I think that I'm a great professional to translate all sort of texts (both portuguese to english, and english to portuguese), but specially in this fields of technology, travelling, sports, enviromental, nature and music.
If you have any question, or want to know more about something specific, it'll be a pleasure talking to you!
I appreciate your time and I'm at your disposal anytime!
