Source text - English Cooperation Vs Competition:
When you are in a competitive environment, your mind set goes something like this: “I need to be better than the rest”,” is either them or me”, I must beat the others”,” every man for themselves”,” I am here alone”, “there is only one winner”, etc.
When you are in a cooperative environment your mind set is: “I must help the group” “I can have the support of others”, “I can ask for help”, “how can I contribute?”, “we all can win”, etc.
The competitive mode is great for a tennis game, a board game, and situations alike. Not for a life standard, or for building a community. I rather live and work in a cooperative environment where there is room for all, because the assumption is that everybody has something to contribute. We already live in a competitive enough world, and we have seen the consequences of the individualism where it does not belong. We also have examples of more cooperative societies where the goal is for the common good. I am talking about societies like Norway, Finland, Japan and other successful countries that are prosperous, places where the citizens have a stronger sense of community. But we have also good examples among us, when we unite and contribute, we have better outcomes. It is not only a more pleasant way to live, but a better way to progress as a society, and the education system should be structured within such cooperative environment. Why compete against our classmates to learn? Because there are only so many good colleges? Is that true? Why compete against our co-workers in the office? So that the boss notices how good we are? As if we must stand out by “being better” that the rest? Is that true, that we are better (or worse) than the others? Why the constant comparison?
When we compare ourselves to others, especially when we are children going through the process of developing our own identity, and we find out that we are better than the rest we run the risk of developing an inflated sense of ourselves, relative to a given point in time, and we tend to extrapolate to other situations; we might feel superior to our peers, friends, the other. We end up distancing ourselves, we lose connection with the others, and that does not help our sense of self. If on the other hand we end up not living up to the comparison, and we realize that we are worse than the rest, we might feel a blow to our self-esteem, we might feel less than we should, we might feel guilty or defective, resulting in an unnecessary blow to our self-esteem. We end up feeling alienated, we can end up feeling separate from the others, we end up distancing ourselves too, and the same lack of connection will be experienced. And what would happen if our point of comparison changes, let’s say we move to a different setting, and we score differently in relation to the new group? Will our sense of identity change? Did we really change? This way to develop an identity feels to me very unstable. And no matter the result of the comparison, we all end up losing, because we will be losing on each other.
Are we not interdependent already? We all bring different attitudes, skills and knowledge and experiences to our environment, that will be shaped when we come in contact In some places of this world, the environment in elementary schools is non-competitive. It could be said that the goal is to sparkle interest in the students, to appeal to their natural curiosity to learn, to teach good study habits, and to learn to contribute to a group, among other things. This emphasis continues into middle school in some fortunate places. In some others, where the goal is not cooperative but rather competitive, a determined content is taught. An evaluation instrument is used, that compares the evaluated against the group. The students will be sorted and classified according to test results. This teaching method would not lead to much personal growth, nor to interest in the subject, especially if the student is one who scores low in that test. The students will perceive themselves as belonging to the group of “the good”, or belonging to the “group of the not good”. The teacher would miss a great chance to learn more about the thinking process of the students, their interests, other abilities that could have been used in a different learning process, and more important, the teacher would miss an opportunity to help the student find his way to contribute. Also, with this method, we will encounter problems with the testing instruments, which tend to favor those with experience answering that type of test, independently of the knowledge of the content being tested.
Much can be said about cooperation Vs. competition, but for now I will stop at this point for reflection.

Cuando se vive en un ambiente de competencia, la actitud mental consiste en algo así: “debo ser mejor que los demás”, “soy yo o ellos”, “debo ganarle a los otros”, “sálvese quien pueda”, “estoy solo en esto”,” hay solamente un ganador”, etc.
Cuando uno se encuentra en un ambiente competitivo la actitud mental puede ser: “debo ayudar al grupo”, “puedo recibir apoyo de otros”, “puedo pedir ayuda”, “⸘cómo puedo yo contribuir?”, “todos podemos ganar”, etc.
El modo competitivo es excelente para un juego de tenis, un juego de mesa, o situaciones parecidas. Pero no como estándar de vida, ni para construir una comunidad. Yo prefiero vivir en un ambiente cooperativo donde hay cabida para todos, porque se asume que todos tienen algo que aportar. Ya de hecho vivimos en un mundo bastante competitivo, y hemos visto las consecuencias del individualismo en los momentos y lugares equivocados. También tenemos ejemplos de sociedades más cooperativas donde se tiene como meta el bien común. Me refiero a algunos lugares como Noruega, Finlandia, Japón, y otras culturas avanzadas que han alcanzado niveles más prósperos, lugares en donde los ciudadanos tienen un sentido más fuerte de comunidad. También podemos encontrar ejemplos de este tipo entre nosotros, cuando nos unimos podemos obtener mejores resultados. No solamente es esta una forma más placentera de vivir, sino también es una mejor forma de progresar como sociedad, y el sistema educativo para las futuras generaciones debería estar estructurado dentro de dicho ambiente cooperativo. ¿Por qué competir con nuestros compañeros para aprender? ¿Porque solo hay unas cuantas universidades buenas? ¿Es eso cierto? ¿Por qué competir con nuestros colegas en la oficina? ¿Para que el jefe note que somos buenos trabajadores? ¿Como si fuera necesario destacarse siendo “mejor” que los demás? ¿Es eso cierto? ¿Que somos “mejores” o “peores” que los demás? ¿Por qué nos comparamos constantemente?
Cuando nos comparamos con los demás, especialmente cuando somos niños en proceso de formar nuestra propia identidad, y descubrimos que somos mejores que los otros corremos el riesgo de desarrollar un ego inflado en referencia a determinada situación. La tendencia será a extrapolar a otras situaciones, es posible que nos sintamos superiores a nuestros compañeros, nuestros amigos, los otros. Terminamos separándonos, perdemos conexión con los otros, y esto no ayuda al desarrollo de nuestra identidad. Si, por otro lado, no salimos bien librados en la comparación y nos damos cuenta de que somos peores que los otros, que somos menos de lo que deberíamos ser, podríamos sentirnos culpables o defectuosos, siendo esto un golpe innecesario a nuestra autoestima. También terminaremos distanciándonos de los demás, y experimentaremos la misma pérdida de conexión. ¿Y qué ocurriría si cambiara nuestro punto de comparación, por ejemplo, si nos mudamos a otro lugar, y nuestro puntaje es diferente en relación con nuestro nuevo grupo? ¿Cambiará nuestro sentido de identidad? ¿Realmente hemos cambiado en algo? Esta manera de formar una identidad me parece muy inestable. Independientemente del resultado de nuestra evaluación, todos terminamos perdiendo, porque nos alienamos unos de otros.
¿No somos ya de hecho interdependientes? Todos traemos consigo nuestras actitudes, habilidades, conocimientos y experiencias a nuestro ambiente, los cuales serán a su vez modificados al entrar en contacto con el mismo. En algunos lugares del mundo el ambiente de las escuelas de primaria no es competitivo. El objetivo de estas escuelas, podría decirse, es desarrollar interés por el estudio en los alumnos, echar mano de su curiosidad natural para aprender, enseñarles buenos hábitos de estudio y cómo contribuir a un grupo, entre otras cosas. Este énfasis continúa en algunas escuelas secundarias de lugares afortunados. En otros, donde el énfasis es competitivo, se ensena un contenido determinado y luego se utiliza una herramienta de evaluación, basada en la comparación de los evaluados, quienes serán clasificados según los resultados de dicha evaluación. Este método no estimula mucho el crecimiento personal, ni el desarrollo del interés por la materia, especialmente si el alumno es uno de aquellos que obtuvo un puntaje bajo. Los alumnos se percibirán a si mismos como parte del grupo “de los buenos” o “de los no tan buenos”. El maestro habrá perdido una oportunidad de conocer mejor el proceso de pensamiento de sus alumnos, sus intereses, y otras habilidades que hubieran utilizado para aprender el tema con un método diferente, y lo más importante, habrá perdido la oportunidad de ayudar al alumno a encontrar su propia forma de contribuir. Además, con este método siempre enfrentaremos problemas con el instrumento de evaluación, que tenderá a favorecer aquellos con mayor experiencia en ese determinado método de evaluación, independientemente del contenido que se está evaluando.
Se puede hablar mucho más con respecto de la cooperación Vs la competitividad, pero por ahora voy a detenerme en este punto de reflexión.

I am a Colombian Psychologist with a M.A. in Social Sciences from University of Chicago. I have been living in the United States since 1986 intermittently, to finally settle in 1996. I have been working in a hospital and clinics setting as Medical Interpreter and Translator since 2007 (nationally certified since 2014), and prior to that I worked as a bilingual social worker and translator as well. My languages are English and Spanish, and I have been translating documents since I can remember. My line of work had been in the medical field and social sciences, of course, but I have a broad range of interests beyond my specialties. My partner also has a background in Psychology, and Art, and has been an interpreter and translator for about 20 years as well. She used to have her translation agency until she moved to California, where we decided to unite forces.
