Source text - Spanish La empresa salmantina Arbórea Gestión Ambiental, de la que Carlos Bernabéu es fundador, lleva más de una década dedicada al diseño de tecnología aplicada al estudio y gestión de fauna amenazada en distintos países del mundo. Sin embargo, su última innovación -fruto de su estrecha colaboración con el Parque Científico de la Universidad de Salamanca-, fue presentada en la pasada edición de la feria internacional de Energía Eólica, HUSUM Wind Energy.
Se trata del aracnocóptero Eol6, un novedoso micro VANT (Vehículo Aéreo No Tripulado) diseñado para inspeccionar el estado de las palas de los aerogeneradores. Esta aeronave pilotada por control remoto, revisa cada aerogenerador meticulosamente, fotografiando todos los desperfectos que la turbina haya podido sufrir, con el fin de identificarlos para su posterior reparación.
Pese a su reducido tamaño, el aracnocóptero es capaz de trasladar equipos electrónicos de medición, como por ejemplo cámaras de alta resolución, lo que le permite ofrecer una imagen detallada y de gran calidad; lo que le convierte en una alternativa a los métodos tradicionales de inspección de palas que implican el uso de grúas y personal cualificado.
En estas líneas, el propio Bernabéu comparte con EOLUS un vuelo con el Eol6.
EL PRESENTE
El verano seco ha facilitado que el viento movilice más partículas erosivas de lo habitual proyectándolas contra las palas del parque eólico hacia el que se aproxima un pequeño todoterreno. La carga del maletero salta sonoramente en cada bache del polvoriento camino. Finalizada la aproximación, la rutina es simple. El artefacto futurista, aparentemente surgido de una película de ciencia ficción es sorprendentemente ligero. En apenas tres minutes es extraído de su caja estanca acolchada y desplegado. El protocolo de comprobación da luz verde y, con un ligero zumbido, sus hélices de carbono lo propulsan a sorprendente velocidad hacia el extremo de la pala.
El día es agradable, pero la intensa insolación genera corrientes ascendentes y turbulencias importantes cerca del rotor. La posición del aerogenerador en el borde mismo de la ladera de una cárcava recibe un flujo de aire caliente ascendente e irregular que incrementa la fatiga de la pala, acelerando su deterioro. La aeronave zumba compensando los saltos de viento automáticamente, cernida junto al extreme de la pala. El piloto posiciona la nave fácilmente, con suavidad. Con una ligera presión en la palanca del "joystick", el robot reanuda el suave ascenso vertical. Mientras tanto, el copiloto observa la superficie inmóvil, abstraído, concentrado en la imagen que aportan sus gafas de realidad virtual. Su cabeza se inclina por momentos al compás de los giros de la nave. Es un curioso espectáculo. Su cerebro interpreta los movimientos de la imagen accionando los músculos correspondientes para "compensar", tal como hace el procesador del aracnocóptero cuando el viento trata de desestabilizarlo.
Tras revisar las dos caras de la pala, la aeronave pasa con fluidez a un par de metros del borde de ataque.
Aquí su ascenso es más lento; el extremo es clave. Han aparecido algunos nuevos agujeros y grietas. El piloto se da cuenta al ver por el rabillo del ojo el movimiento repetitivo del pulgar del copiloto sobre el pulsador de disparo remoto de la cámara.
Aterrizaje y un rápido cambio de baterías mientras la siguiente pala es colocada en posición, y repetición de la secuencia.
Varios aerogeneradores después, el día ha sido bueno y productivo, pese a las turbulencias en algunos puntos. En la oficina, el software revelará la posición de los desperfectos. Comparados con el último informe, se aprecian nuevas erosiones, y tan solo dos de las palas requieren intervención física. Se transmiten órdenes al respecto al equipo de reparación. Con la información precisa obtenida, el trabajo sobre la pala se agilizará notablemente.
La nueva aeronave, el Aracnocóptero EOL6 está ahorrando gran cantidad de horas de presencia física en las palas, mediante cuerdas o costosas grúas y muchas horas de trabajo por persona en tareas de reparación.
El volumen de inspección con cada equipo técnico ha crecido ostensiblemente a la par que la seguridad y la calidad de las imágenes. Los 24MP de las nuevas cámaras y el ángulo de imagen correcto proporcionan una nitidez que agudiza la fiabilidad de diagnóstico.

Tras nueve años de intenso trabajo en el desarrollo de soluciones prácticas aplicadas al control de aves urbanas plaga; Arbórea, una pequeña empresa del Parque Científico de la Universidad de Salamanca, destaca por sus soluciones innovadoras que aúnan etología con tecnología punta. Eficientes resultados en la reducción poblacional de paloma doméstica en ciudades españolas, que padecen la suciedad, deterioro patrimonial y riesgos para la salud pública lo avalan. En estos programas aparece sin embargo un problema recurrente: determinados edificios aislados y ruinosos se resisten a las medidas de control, ya que son inaccesibles a los equipos técnicos por riesgos de derrumbe. Por otro lado, su ubicación en entornos protegidos de cascos históricos ralentiza los procesos burocráticos necesarios para su demolición o rehabilitación. Aprovechando cubiertas hundidas, las aves originan palomares que irradian posteriormente nuevas parejas jóvenes reproductoras invadiendo terrazas, patios interiores y oquedades de los inmuebles colindantes.
Para atajar este último problema, una vez reducidas las poblaciones generales de paloma urbana a cifras sostenibles, surgió la necesidad de eliminar estos puntos negros de cría. Arbórea puso en marcha un proceso de I+D para aportar una solución eficiente y asequible.
Se estableció un procedimiento experimental para tratar grano con una sustancia inhibidora de las hormonas que condicionan la puesta e introducirlo a través de las cubiertas deterioradas. Esto limitaría el éxito reproductor, mermando progresivamente el volumen de aves en cada reducto mediante la alta presión de captura selectiva en todo el entorno. Las cuestiones claves: ¿cómo posicionar con precisión el grano tratado en lo alto de la cubierta de un edificio ruinoso, en el centro histórico de una ciudad densamente poblada? y especialmente, ¿cómo hacerlo con una logística sencilla y repetible a costes asumibles?.
Al enfrentar este desafío hace más de cuatro años, se prospectó en profundidad el mercado de aeronaves de despegue vertical, capaces de transportar unos 2 kg de grano tratado en cada viaje. No había nada disponible para uso civil que resultara eficiente, seguro y sencillo de manejar. Por el contrario, sí había aeronaves en el entorno militar, inaccesibles para servicios civiles. Con la experiencia de asumir retos técnicos en buena parte de los proyectos desarrollados por Arbórea, se reunió un equipo de expertos compuesto de ingenieros, militares del Aire e investigadores de la USAL expertos en inteligencia artificial. Se valoró factible desarrollar una nave propia para estos fines. Una fuerte inversión permitió la construcción del primer prototipo, con chasis plegable de aleación de titanio y carbono, capaz de llevar esa carga con estabilidad y seguridad. Un requisito adicional era que fuese transportable desmontado en el maletero de un coche normal.
Tras las primeras pruebas, la eficiencia y prestaciones del primer prototipo relegaron rápidamente a un segundo plano su uso original. La plataforma creada daba pie a usos civiles y militares de considerable mayor interés. Simultáneamente, las Administraciones públicas españolas, principales clientes de los servicios de Arbórea durante 16 años, comenzaron a dar signos de insolvencia creciente y preocupante. Algo se siente en el aire y no es bueno.
Translation - English The Salamanca-based firm, Arbórea Environmental Management, and its founder, Carlos Bernabéu, have been working for more than a decade in the design of technology applied to the study and management of threatened fauna in many different countries around the world. Nevertheless, their latest innovation—the product of extensive collaboration with the University of Salamanca Science Park—was presented at the last edition of the International Wind Energy Conference, HUSUM Wind Energy.
The aracnocóptero Eol6 is a novel, micro UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) designed to inspect the condition of wind turbine blades. This remotely-piloted aircraft inspects each wind turbine meticulously, photographing all of the irregularities that the turbine may have sustained, with the aim of identifying them for their subsequent repair.
Despite its small size, the aracnocóptero is capable of transporting electronic assessment equipment, such as high resolution cameras, which allows it to provide high-quality, detailed images. This makes it an alternative to traditional methods of rotor blade inspection that involve the use of cranes and qualified personnel.
On that note, Bernabéu himself shares a flight with the Eol6 with EOLUS.
THE PRESENT
The dry summer has allowed for more than the usual amount of erosive particles to be transported by the wind, projecting them against the wind farm’s rotor blades. Approaching the wind farm is a small SUV, the contents of the trunk noisily jump around in each pothole on the dusty path. Once they arrive, the routine is simple. The futuristic machine, which was apparently inspired by a science fiction film, is surprisingly light. In barely three minutes, it’s removed from its cushioned, hard-shelled suitcase and unfolded. The start-up sequence gives us the green light and, with a slight buzz, its carbon helixes propel it at a surprising speed toward the edge of the blade.
It’s a pleasant day, but the intense sunlight generates upslope wind flow and significant air turbulence near the rotor. The wind turbine’s location on the edge of a slope of a gully receives a gust of ascending, uneven hot air that wears out the blade, accelerating its deterioration. The aircraft hums, compensating for wind changes automatically, hovering above the edge of the blade. The pilot positions the craft easily and delicately. With a slight nudge of the joystick, the robot resumes its gentile vertical rise. Meanwhile, the co-pilot observes the unmoving surface, engrossed, concentrated on the image that his virtual reality glasses provide. His head tilts for a few moments, mirroring the turns of the aircraft. It’s an interesting spectacle. Their brain interprets the movements of the image, triggering the corresponding muscles to “compensate”, just like the aracnocóptero’s processor does when the wind attempts to destabilize it.
After inspecting both sides of the rotor blade, the aircraft passes unhindered a couple of meters to the leading edge.
Here its ascent is slower, the edge of the blade is key. Some new holes and cracks have appeared. The pilot realizes this upon seeing out of the corner of his eye the repetitive motion of the co-pilot’s thumb as they press the camera’s remote shutter button.
Landing and a quick change of batteries while the next blade is placed in position and the sequence plays out again.
Several wind turbines later, it’s been a good and productive day, despite the turbulence at some points of the day. In the office, the software reveals the location of the irregularities. Compared to the last report, new erosion is detected and only two blades need physical intervention. Word on the matter is communicated to the repair team. With the precise information that has been captured, work on the blade will be notably streamlined.
The new aircraft, the Aracnocóptero EOL6, is saving a great deal of time spent on physical inspection of the blades, performed with cords and costly cranes, as well as many man hours spent on repair tasks
The inspection volume of each piece of technical equipment has clearly increased at the same rate as the safety and image quality. The new, 24MP cameras and the ability to capture the image at the right angle provide a clarity that increases the accuracy of the diagnosis.
THE ORIGINS, April 2008
After nine years of intense work in the development of practical solutions applied to urban pest bird control, Arbórea, a small firm in the University of Salamanca Science Park, stands out for its innovative solutions that combine ethology with cutting edge technology. It has achieved efficient results in the population reduction of the domestic pigeon in Spanish cities, a species which is unsanitary, causes damage to historic sites, and presents public health risks. Nevertheless, there’s always a recurring problem in these projects: certain isolated and derelict buildings cannot be adapted to the means of control given that they are inaccessible to technical teams due to collapse risks. Additionally, due to their location in historic preservation zones, the required bureaucratic processes drag out their demolition or rehabilitation. Taking advantage of these caved in roofs, the pigeons make nests that then produce young reproductive pairs that invade terraces, interior patios, and openings in adjoining properties.
Once the general population of the urban pigeon was reduced to manageable numbers, the need to eliminate these concentrated points in breeding arose in order to curtail the problem mentioned above. Arbórea launched an R&D process to provide an efficient and affordable solution.
An experimental procedure was established to treat birdseed with a hormone inhibitor that affects egg laying, which is supplied to the pigeons by way of deteriorated roofs. This would limit reproductive success, progressively diminishing the number of birds in each group through the high stress of selective capture in the entire environment. Key issues: How to precisely place the treated birdseed atop the roof of a deteriorating building in the historic center of a densely populated city? And specifically, how do to it with simple and replicable logistics at a reasonable cost?
When confronting this challenge more than four years ago, the vertical take-off and landing aircraft market was analysed in depth, searching for an aircraft capable of transporting 2kg of birdseed each trip. There was nothing available for civil uses that was efficient, safe and easy to handle. Although there were military aircrafts, they were not available for non-military purposes. Already having experience in taking on technical challenges— in large part due to past projects developed by Arbórea—a group of experts were convened, made up of engineers, members of the air force, and researchers at the University of Salamanca in artificial intelligence. They determined that developing an aircraft for these uses would be possible. A strong investment allowed for the construction of the first prototype, with a foldable chassis made of titanium alloy and carbon, capable of carrying the payload securely and stably. Another requirement was that it could be transported, once broken down, in the trunk of a normal sized car.
After the first trials, the efficiency and advantages of the first prototype quickly made its original use secondary to other potential uses. The platform that was created gave rise to considerably more interesting civil and military uses. Simultaneously, Spanish Public Administration, the principal clients of Arbórea’s services for 16 years, began to show signs of a worrying and growing insolvency. Something could be felt in the air and it wasn’t good.
