Source text - English From the first air raids on Torino in June, 1940, Allied raids gradually intensified, but the pace picked up dramatically on November 20, 1942. Up to that point, however, our lives continued to unfold with new but manageable challenges and it seemed we may not have taken the war seriously.
For weeks, from the streets and from our balconies, we had
watched the air raid drills as the nation prepared for a war that
just didn’t seem real.
But that night, with no advance warning, we heard the faint but growing rumble of aircraft engines as a large fleet of bombers approached our beloved city. Suddenly, there were two loud explosions and the earth shook as bombs fell near the piazza on Via Frinco. Flaming debris fell from the sky over a broad expanse of the city. The raid lasted about twenty minutes but it felt like eternity. According to a report from the November 23, 1942 Advertiser in Adelaide Australia, a single bomber group dropped fifty-four 4,000-lb bombs and 110,000 incendiaries in this raid, only a fraction of the total. It was just the first of many raids that followed.
As Allied bombing raids increased in frequency and
intensity, my parents felt this apartment was not as safe as they’d like. There were many soldiers stationed on the piazza that faced our building, and this seemed to be a constant target for the bombs.
So we moved once again, this time to an apartment at 86 Corso Orbassano. It was in a big new building that had been constructed with an underground shelter. With many citizens convinced that a larger war was coming, the building quickly reached full occupancy. Later, I would come to know this shelter very well. It was small, and with my recent experience in the elevator, it was for me a terrible place.
By the spring of 1943 the constant bombardment of Torino, Milan, and Genoa –sometimes several attacks in one day – had left those cities under layers of rubble. The many hours spent cramped in the shelter with terrified neighbors, screaming children, howling dogs and moaning old people were taking their toll. My fears about confined quarters began to manifest themselves in tremors, and Mama made me sip cognac to calm me down.
During one particularly horrific air raid in July 1943, we heard the now-familiar hum of aircraft engines approaching from the southeast, the direction of Buttigliera, followed by the devastating blasts of bombs. According to a story by Maurizio Lupo published in La Stampa, the Isabella Bridge over the Po was hit, followed by strikes in Valentino Park, both slightly to the west of us. Then incendiary bombs landed in a factory adjacent to our apartment building and shelter. This factory built railroad cars, and in those days they used a lot of wood in their construction. Thus there were huge stacks of wood waiting to be processed into various sections of the rail cars. Naturally, when the bombs landed, these stacks turned quickly into raging fires that, with already strained civil
resources, could not be extinguished.
While the apartment building itself might have been endangered, the major threat came from the fires. Even after the bombs had stopped falling, as people attempted to leave the shelter for the street, they were driven back down by the unbearable heat. And so everyone remained trapped in the shelter until the flames exhausted themselves several hours later.
Word spread that the entire city had been devastated by
these incendiary bombs and Mama was concerned about her parents in Stura. She prevailed upon Papa to check on them.
Without pause, he mounted his bicycle and pedaled down streets framed on both sides by flaming structures of one sort
or another. Finally arriving in Stura, my father found my grandmother’s body on the ground beside the steps that went alongside the building from the upper living quarters to the
lower storage area for the business. Since she only showed what appeared to be bruises she might have gotten as she fell, it wasn’t clear whether she was physically hurt in the attack, died of natural causes, or was simply fatally frightened. But remembering her all-business demeanor in the face of challenges, it’s hard for me to believe she could have been so overcome by fear.
Lupo went on to report in La Stampa that this raid by the British, with over 250 bombers, not only had military objectives but also aimed to terrorize the local population, almost half of which was already displaced and had precious few places to seek shelter. According to Lupo, that raid killed 792 Torinese and injured 914.
Given not only the terrible devastation of our precious city, but also the crushing pessimism about the future there, especially after my grandmother’s death, Papa and Mama made a major decision – as long as my father’s work at the cassa di risparmio continued, he would remain in their apartment. But Mama and I would move out of the city. This time we moved out to the Buttigliera d’Asti farm of Papa’s parents. At that time my cousin Carlo, son of my uncle Luigi, was also living on the farm with his wife and baby.
Separating from my father was emotionally stressful, especially during the bombing raids. Many times these aircraft would come to Torino from the direction of Buttigliera, so we often could see them overhead before the bombs would drop on the city. I must be honest and say that the visual impact of these raids was spectacular. Searchlights would begin penetrating the dark skies and seeing an aircraft caught in one of the beams was incredible. Even more so was the spectacle of the sky over Torino turning bright red, orange, and yellow, the smoke clouds reflecting the intense fires arising from the devastation below. But even as we were awestruck by these sights, we trembled at the thought of Papa and other people we knew and loved embroiled in the center of it all.

Fino a quel momento le nostre vite erano proseguite come al solito, con la loro riserva di nuove - ma tutto sommato gestibili - sfide quotidiane, e alcuni avrebbero potuto pensare che non avessimo preso la faccenda della guerra troppo sul serio.
Per settimane avevamo osservato le esercitazioni antiaeree dalle strade e dai nostri balconi, mentre la nostra nazione si preparava a una guerra che, semplicemente, non ci sembrava reale.
Ma quella notte, senza alcun preavviso, udimmo l'indistinto eppur crescente rombo dei motori degli aerei, mentre una grande flotta di bombardieri si avvicinava alla nostra amata Torino. All'improvviso sentimmo due forti esplosioni e la terra tremò mentre le bombe cadevano nei pressi della piazza adiacente a Via Frinco. Rottami in fiamme piovvero dal cielo su gran parte della città. Il raid durò circa venti minuti, ma a noi sembrò eterno. Secondo un reportage dell'Advertiser di Adelaide (Australia), datato 23 novembre 1942, un singolo gruppo di bombardieri sganciò 54 bombe da 4000 libbre ciascuna, e 110,000 bombe incendiarie durante l'incursione, appena una frazione del totale. Fu solo il primo dei molti raid che seguirono.
Con i bombardamenti degli Alleati che aumentavano in frequenza e intensità, i miei genitori non riuscivano più a sentirsi sicuri nel nostro appartamento, perlomeno non quanto avrebbero voluto. C'erano sempre molti soldati di stanza nella piazza di fronte al nostro caseggiato, e ci pareva che ciò la rendesse un bersaglio fisso per i bombardieri.
Così traslocammo di nuovo, stavolta in un appartamento al n.86 di Corso Orbassano. L'appartamento si trovava in un grande, moderno palazzo che era stato costruito con tanto di rifugio sotterraneo. Con molti convinti che un conflitto su più vasta scala fosse inevitabile, il caseggiato fu presto al completo. In seguito, avrei imparato a conoscere quel rifugio sin troppo bene. Era un luogo angusto e, data la mia recente esperienza in quell'ascensore, per me insopportabile.
Entro la primavera del 1943 i continui bombardamenti – a volte anche più attacchi nel corso di una sola giornata – avevano seppellito Torino, Milano e Genova sotto strati di macerie. Le ore trascorse nel rifugio, rannicchiata accanto a vicini di casa terrorizzati, bambini che piangevano, cani che guaivano e anziani che si lamentavano, cominciarono a far sentire il loro effetto. La mia paura degli spazi ristretti cominciò a manifestarsi sotto forma di tremori, e mia madre mi faceva bere qualche sorso di cognac nel tentativo di calmarmi I nervi.
Nel luglio del '43, durante un raid aereo particolarmente spaventoso, udimmo l'ormai familiare ronzio dei bombardieri arrivare da sudest, in direzione di Buttigliera, accompagnato dalle devastanti esplosioni delle bombe. Secondo un articolo pubblicato in seguito da Maurizio Lupo su La Stampa, era stato colpito il ponte dell'Isabella sul Po, seguito da una serie di incursioni sul Parco del Valentino; entrambi gli obbiettivi si trovavano leggermente a ovest rispetto a casa nostra. Poco dopo, bombe incendiarie colpirono una fabbrica adiacente il nostro rifugio. In questa fabbrica si assemblavano vagoni ferroviari, che all'epoca venivano realizzati impiegando anche molto legno, per cui lì dentro erano stoccate enormi cataste di legname in attesa di essere sagomato in questo o quell'elemento delle carrozze. Naturalmente, quando le bombe colpirono la fabbrica queste cataste fecero presto a divampare in incendi impossibili da estinguere per il personale civile, già di per sé allo stremo.
Anche se il caseggiato in sé era a rischio, il pericolo maggiore veniva dagli incendi. Perfino quando il bombardamento cessò, le persone che cercavano di uscire dal rifugio venivano respinte da quel calore intollerabile. Così rimanemmo bloccati lì sotto, fino a quando le fiamme non si estinsero da sole, molte ore dopo.
Nel frattempo si era sparsa la voce che tutta la città era stata devastata dalle bombe incendiarie. Mamma era preoccupata per i suoi genitori, che stavano a Stura e convinse papà ad andare a controllare. Senza pensarci due volte, papà inforcò la sua bicicletta e pedalò via, lungo strade ancora incorniciate da edifici in fiamme. Quando finalmente arrivò a Stura, trovò il corpo di mia nonna riverso a terra, accanto alla scalinata esterna che dall'alloggio ai piani superiori portava al magazzino seminterrato usato come negozio. Dato che sul corpo vi erano solo alcuni lividi, che avrebbe potuto anche essersi fatta cadendo, era impossibile capire se fosse rimasta ferita durante l'attacco, se fosse morta per cause naturali o se, semplicemente, il bombardamento l'avesse spaventata a morte. Ma ripensando all'atteggiamento pragmatico e concreto che la nonna manteneva di fronte a qualsiasi sfida, mi è difficile credere che si fosse fatta sopraffarre fino a quel punto dalla paura.
In seguito Lupo scrisse su La Stampa che l'incursione degli inglesi, che aveva visto la partecipazione di più di 250 bombardieri, non era mirata solo a colpire obbiettivi militari, ma a terrorizzare la popolazione locale, metà della quale era già stata sfollata e aveva ben pochi posti in cui rifugiarsi. Secondo Lupo, il raid uccise 792 torinesi e ne ferì altri 914.
Considerando la devastazione che aveva colpito la nostra amata città e il tremendo pessimismo che provavamo per il suo futuro, soprattutto dopo la morte di mia nonna, papà e mamma presero una decisione importante. Fintanto che mio padre avesse avuto il lavoro alla Cassa di Risparmio sarebbe rimasto nel nostro appartamento, ma io e mamma ci saremmo trasferite fuori città. Questa volta ci spostammo a Buttigliera d'Asti, nella fattoria dei genitori di papà. A quel tempo viveva lì anche mio cugino Carlo, figlio dello Zio Luigi, con la moglie e il figlio appena nato.
Da un punto di vista emotivo separarmi da mio padre fu molto stressante per me, soprattutto durante i raid. Molto spesso gli aerei diretti a Torino passavano per Buttigliera, quindi li vedevamo sorvolarci prima di sentire le bombe che venivano sganciate sulla città. Devo essere onesta e ammettere che per me l'impatto visivo di questi raid era spettacolare. I riflettori della contraerea fendevano il cielo buio, e vedere la sagoma di un aereo colta da uno dei raggi era qualcosa di incredibile. Ancora di più lo era lo spettacolo del cielo sopra Torino farsi rossastro, arancione e giallo, con le nubi di fumo che riflettevano la luce intensa dei fuochi alimentati dalla devastazione sottostante. Ma pure nello sbalordimento causato da queste visioni non smettevamo mai di tremare al pensiero di papà e di tutti quelli che conoscevamo e amavamo, invischiati al centro di tutto quel caos.

A 4 anni dalla completa implementazione del sistema IMPAX specificamente progettato da Agfa Healthcare sulle necessità del San Raffaele, all'ospedale è tempo di bilanci. Le nuove sfide che i tempi pongono al sistema sanitario italiano riguardano soprattutto il contenimento dei costi, senza dover rinunciare alla qualità della ricerca medica e dell'assistenza al malato. In questo contesto il contributo del sistema IMPAX sviluppato da Agfa HealthCare è ormai indispensabile per ottimizzare tempistiche di lavoro e risorse.
Qualità delle prestazioni e ottimizzazione delle risorse.
Fondato negli anni '70 come un'organizzazione no-profit facente parte della Fondazione San Raffaele del Monte Tabor, l'ospedale San Raffaele è oggi un centro di ricerca altamente specializzato, che conduce studi di rilevanza nazionale e internazionale. Alla normale attività ospedaliera, l'istituto associa oggi un'attività di formazione altamente specializzata (tramite l'Università Vita-Salute) e la ricerca nel campo della medicina molecolare, diabete e malattie metaboliche e nel settore delle biotecnologie.
In un complesso ospedaliero così esteso ed articolato è indispensabile che le varie sezioni e dipartimenti dialoghino nel modo giusto. “La sfida che affrontiamo oggi è potenziare e sviluppare le nostre aree di eccellenza, essere efficienti razionalizzando allo stesso tempo i costi dell’organizzazione delle attività, e migliorare l’appropriatezza delle prestazioni erogate mantenendone la qualità, soprattutto a livello di diagnostica.” commenta Maurizia Del Maschio, responsabile dell'Unità di Radiologia convenzionale e digitale. Ed è per questo che dal 2003 l'ospedale ha intrapreso un radicale progetto di digitalizzazione, che comprende l'installazione di un sistema IMPAX.
Una soluzione digitale rapida e intuitiva
Il progetto ha inizialmente coinvolto il Dipartimento di Medicina Nucleare, per poi venire esteso gradualmente, all'Unità di Neuroradiologia e al Dipartimento di Radiologia. Il processo di digitalizzazione è stato completato nel 2006, mentre Agfa Healthcare ne seguiva l'evoluzione passo per passo, modificando e rifinendo le sue soluzioni in base alle necessità dell'ospedale.
Il risultato finale di questo processo è un sistema modulare IMPAX, con architettura in High Availability e Disaster Recovery. La sua struttura a moduli permette la gestione di dati e immagini diagnostiche di qualsiasi tipo: dalla radiologia alla medicina nucleare, passando per l'ortopedia e la radioterapia.
Migliorare le “buone pratiche” della Regione.
L'importanza di avere a disposizione un sistema integrato di gestione dei dati e delle immagini diagnostiche è stata subito evidente nel Dipartimento di Radiologia, dove 22 radiologi si dividono su 6 Unità specialistiche diverse. A dispetto di una fase iniziale di assestamento il personale ha sperimentato presto un flusso di lavoro più veloce ed efficiente, e una riduzione dei tempi di diagnostica.
Secondo la dottoressa Maurizia Del Maschio “All'inizio c'era stata una certa perplessità, perché i colleghi erano abituati a vedere le immagini diagnostiche su pellicola. Ma il fatto di aver introdotto le novità gradualmente ci ha aiutato, e dopo una fase di assestamento i miglioramenti sono stati evidenti. Ad esempio, secondo il mandato della regione il tempo medio di presa in carico di ogni paziente ambulatoriale non deve superare i tre giorni: naturalmente le indicazioni venivano rispettate anche quando usavamo i mezzi diagnostici tradizionali, ma ora grazie all'integrazione del sistema IMPAX tutto il processo si è velocizzato e grazie alla riduzione dei tempi morti arriviamo a gestire un maggior numero di pazienti, abbattendo allo stesso tempo i costi. Un altro grande vantaggio è quello di poter accedere in pochissimo tempo, se occorre, alla storia radiologica del paziente.”
L'unità di Radiologia del San Raffaele è inoltre coinvolta profondamente del settore della ricerca, con più di 40 protocolli clinici attivati in collaborazione con il Dipartimento di Oncologia e gli altri Dipartimenti dell'Ospedale. Coordinare il lavoro di ricerca delle varie unità specialistiche e di queste con l'intera struttura ospedaliera non è semplice e oggi “non potremmo fare a meno del RIS/PACS” ammette la dottoressa Del Maschio.
A 4 anni di distanza dall'inizio del progetto, il San Raffaele continua con successo il suo percorso con Agfa HealthCare. apprezzandone l'assistenza continua e la capacità di proporre soluzioni ritagliate su misura per qualsiasi esigenza. “Agfa HealthCare è stata con noi fin dall'inizio”, dice Maurizia Del Maschio, “garantendoci un ottimo supporto tecnico e la disponibilità a rivedere le soluzioni proposte ogni volta che si presentava un nuovo problema.” . Founded in the 1970s as a private, non-profit corporation owned by San Raffaele del Monte Tabor Foundation, San Raffaele Scientific University Hospital is considered a top-level research centre, setting the standard for healthcare expertise and innovation in Italy. The hospital today combines traditional clinical activity with state-of-art education and training (by means of its affiliation with the University Vita-Salute). Also included is ground-breaking research in molecular medicine, diabetes, metabolic diseases and biotechnologies.
For a large, multi-centered hospital complex like San Raffaele, it's vital that all divisions and research facilities efficiently communicate. “At present, the challenge we face is maintaining and increase our solid reputation in the healthcare field, yet at the same time, rationalizing how we charge for medical services. IMPAX allows a swift and intuitive managing of diagnostic images
The initial project involved the hospital’s nuclear medicine unit, but was soon extended to Neuroradiology and the Radiology Department. The digitalization process was completed in 2006, while Agfa HealthCare followed this evolution step by step, refining its solutions to meet ever-changing hospital needs. The final result was an IMPAX modular solution, with High Availability and Disaster Recovery systems.
The modular structure of IMPAX allows the quick, intuitive managing of data and images from all diagnostic imaging modalities: from general radiology through nuclear medicine, including orthopaedics and even radiotherapy.
Regional care directives met and improved upon thanks to IMPAX
The advantages of having a fully integrated IMPAX solution were clear to radiology department professionals, which has 22 radiologists spread over six different units. Despite an initial adjustment period, the hospital's personnel soon experienced a more efficient workflow, with significantly reduced downtime.
According to Dr. Del Maschio, “At first, there was some perplexity among the doctors who were used to read hardcopy images. This situation was addressed by introducing all the changes gradually. This really helped us a lot, and after some minor adjustments, it was clear how much the new solution had improved our working environment, along with our ability to adhere to the region's “best practices” directives. For example, the clinical follow-up of patients can't last more than three days; of course we were able to meet this standard even when using conventional diagnostic solutions. But now, thanks to IMPAX, we can take care of a greater number of patients far more cost-effectively by using highly-efficient digital methods. We also benefit by having quick electronic access to a patient's complete clinical history.”
San Raffaele's radiology unit is also deeply involved in clinical research, carrying out more than 40 programs in close collaboration with the Oncology Department and several other hospital groups. Coordinating research work of every department is not an easy task, and “we couldn't do it without IMPAX any more”, admits Dr. Del Maschio.
Four years after the first implementation of IMPAX, San Raffaele is successfully continuing its partnership with Agfa HealthCare, relying on its constant support and willingness to develop new solutions that meet the hospital's needs in the best way possible. “Agfa HealthCare has been with us from the very beginning.” says Dr. Del Maschio. “Throughout the years they have always guaranteed an excellent technical support and readiness to refine their solutions whenever a problem occurred”.The next step is a further upgrading and expansion of the IMPAX system in 2011.
