Source text - German Nach einem halben Jahre beherrschte Mirko sämtliche Geheimnisse der Schachtechnik, allerdings mit einer seltsamen Einschränkung, die später in den Fachkreisen viel beobachtet und bespöttelt wurde. Denn Czentovic brachte es nie dazu, auch nur eine einzige Schachpartie auswendig – oder wie man fachgemäß sagt: blind – zu spielen. Ihm fehlte vollkommen die Fähigkeit, das Schlachtfeld in den unbegrenzten Raum der Phantasie zu stellen. Er mußte immer das schwarz-weiße Karree mit den vierundsechzig Feldern und zweiunddreißig Figuren handgreiflich vor sich haben; noch zur Zeit seines Weltruhmes führte er ständig ein zusammenlegbares Taschenschach mit sich, um, wenn er eine Meisterpartie rekonstruieren oder ein Problem für sich lösen wollte, sich die Stellung optisch vor Augen zu führen. Dieser an sich unbeträchtliche Defekt verriet einen Mangel an imaginativer Kraft und wurde in dem engen Kreise ebenso lebhaft diskutiert, wie wenn unter Musikern ein hervorragender Virtuose oder Dirigent sich unfähig gezeigt hätte, ohne aufgeschlagene Partitur zu spielen oder zu dirigieren. Aber diese merkwürdige Eigenheit verzögerte keineswegs Mirkos stupenden Aufstieg. Mit siebzehn Jahren hatte er schon ein Dutzend Schachpreise gewonnen, mit achtzehn sich die ungarische Meisterschaft, mit zwanzig endlich die Weltmeisterschaft erobert. Die verwegensten Champions, jeder einzelne an intellektueller Begabung, an Phantasie und Kühnheit ihm unermeßlich überlegen, erlagen ebenso seiner zähen und kalten Logik wie Napoleon dem schwerfälligen Kutusow, wie Hannibal dem Fabius Cunctator, von dem Livius berichtet, daß er gleichfalls in seiner Kindheit derart auffällige Züge von Phlegma und Imbezillität gezeigt habe. So geschah es, daß in die illustre Galerie der Schachmeister, die in ihren Reihen die verschiedensten Typen intellektueller Überlegenheit vereinigt, Philosophen, Mathematiker, kalkulierende, imaginierende und oft schöpferische Naturen, zum erstenmal ein völliger Outsider der geistigen Welt einbrach, ein schwerer, maulfauler Bauernbursche, aus dem auch nur ein einziges publizistisch brauchbares Wort herauszulocken selbst den gerissensten Journalisten nie gelang. Freilich, was Czentovic den Zeitungen an geschliffenen Sentenzen vorenthielt, ersetzte er bald reichlich durch Anekdoten über seine Person. Denn rettungslos wurde mit der Sekunde, da er vom Schachbrette aufstand, wo er Meister ohnegleichen war, Czentovic zu einer grotesken und beinahe komischen Figur; trotz seines feierlichen schwarzen Anzuges, seiner pompösen Krawatte mit der etwas aufdringlichen Perlennadel und seiner mühsam manikürten Finger blieb er in seinem Gehaben und seinen Manieren derselbe beschränkte Bauernjunge, der im Dorf die Stube des Pfarrers gefegt. Ungeschickt und geradezu schamlos plump suchte er zum Gaudium und zum Ärger seiner Fachkollegen aus seiner Begabung und seinem Ruhm mit einer kleinlichen und sogar oft ordinären Habgier herauszuholen, was an Geld herauszuholen war.
Translation - English After half a year Mirko had mastered all the technical secrets of chess, admittedly with one peculiar limitation, which was later to be much scrutinized and chuckled over in chess circles. For Czentovic was never able to play even a single game of chess from memory – or, as the technical term goes, blindly. He was totally incapable of projecting the battlefield into the borderless space of the imagination. He always needed to have the black and white checked board with its 64 squares and 32 figures within arm's reach in front of him; even as a global celebrity he invariably carried a collapsible pocket chess set with him, so as to optically review the positioning of the pieces whenever he wished to reconstruct a championship game or a chess problem of his own. This defect, itself of little account, betrayed a lack of imaginative vigour and provoked such lively discussions in the tight-knit circle as would take place among musicians if a pre-eminent virtuoso or conductor had shown his inability to play or direct the orchestra without the score open in front of him. But this strange peculiarity in no way hindered Mirko's stupendous ascent. By the age of 17 he had won a dozen chess prizes, at 18 the Hungarian championship and at 20 he finally seized the world championship.
The most resolute champions, each of them vastly superior to him in intellectual acuity, imagination and audacity, fell victim to his cold, methodical doggedness, just as Napoleon had been bested by the stolid Kutusov and Hannibal by Fabius Cunctator, about whom it is recorded by Livy that his traits of passivity and imbecility had been just as clearly manifest throughout his childhood. And so it came to pass that into the the rarefied elite of chess masters, whose ranks were filled by varied exemplars of intellectual superiority (philosophers, mathematicians, people of a methodical, an imaginative, often a creative disposition) someone completely outside the cerebral world penetrated for the first time: a cumbersome, monosyllabic country boy who could never be enticed even by the most wily journalist to utter a single word worth publishing. Admittedly, whatever Czentovic failed to give the newspapers in the form of polished aphorisms, he soon more than made up for in anecdotes about himself. For, at the very second that he stood up from the chess board, a place where he was master without equal, nothing could prevent Czentovic from becoming a preposterous, almost comic figure; despite his solemn black suit, his ostentatious tie with its rather too conspicuous pearl tie pin and his carefully manicured finger nails, he remained by his bearing and manners the same backward country boy, the sweeper of the village priest's parlour. Clumsily, and with downright brazen coarseness, he set out, to both the amusement and annoyance of his peers, to harness his gift and his fame to make of them whatever money could be made, displaying in the process a petty and often vulgar covetousness.
