Russian to English: O. Bergholz - From one heart to another General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - Russian
Translation - English I speak for all who perished in this place,
Their muffled footsteps through my stanzas lace,
And their ardent air remains undying.
I speak for all who call this place their own,
Who walked through death and fire, all alone;
I speak, my people, as your flesh and bone,
For we have shared this pain most terrifying.
Now I become myself of many faces,
Of many souls, of foreign tongues so many.
But I was destined to remain just one -
Remain in others' hearts and their expressions,
And others' happiness, done and undone,
And eavesdrop on my secret moans and questions,
And know: these secrets are not mine to keep...

Source text - Russian
Translation - English Come to the lofts beneath the housetops, come and find
The darkness in its deathbed, frightened and confined,
And all these eyes, dozens of them, still and uncanny,
Are watching you from every lightless nook and cranny.
Look! It is them! See just how lifelessly they stare
And cower, huddling up so quietly up there.
They sneaked inside, all hounded by a howling pack,
Sneaked in to throw one final contemplative glance
Over the sorry path across life's cruel expanse
Towards the sorry end. Now, sitting back to back,
Reproachfully, they're pleading with their eyes:
'What for?' And none but God alone can bear that mortal silence!

Source text - English It is certainly going to be a surprise! Except you are the one who is going to be on the receiving end! As I understand it, you and your sister... that is a laugh. His sister, the tramp, she is not his sister, she is his dame! That Mr Paul really conned you. In any case... Ha! Ha!... Your lovebirds have flown the nest.
Wait, you mean Paul and his sister are not in fact... brother and sister?...
I know how to recognise lovebirds, thank you! Yours were more like two vultures about to devour each other. Always tearing each other's hair out! And she was the one who ruled the roost. She was hardly ever around. That Paul used to get in a right state, when he was hanging out with the Montparnasse lot...

Source text - Russian
Translation - English Have you all given up the vasts of Russia,
The reckless hopelessness of our boundless views,
To have yourselves by Golda Meir ushered
Into this Israel that bears no trace of Jews?
