Here is the Dostoyevskian note of this story writ large. For all his protestations against Dostoyevski, Nabokov often echoes him (particularly when dealing with this theme in works such as ‘The Eye’ or Despair).
‘The Nausea hasn’t left me and I don’t believe it will leave me for quite a while … I was in the municipal park just now. The root of the chestnut tree plunged into the ground just underneath my bench. I no longer remembered that it was a root. Words had disappeared, and with them the meaning of things.’
Translation - Persian (Farsi) راوی احساس مفارقت گزینی از خود و تشویشی که این حس جدایی برایش بوجود آورده بود را اینگونه توصیف میکند: "من... ایستاده بودم، در حالیکه به تصویر خودم در آینه نگاه میکردم و نمی توانستم تشخیص بدم که این، تصویر خود من است"
این داستان ناباکوف، نسخه ی مشابهی از نوشته های داستایفسکی است، که دقیقتر و با جزییات بیشتر نوشته شده است. و با اینکه ناباکوف با داستایفسکی مخالف است ولی بخصوص در داستان هایی با مضامین مشابه مثل "آن چشم" یا "مایوس" به طرز عجیبی شبیه او مینویسد.
"حالت تهوع هنوزم اذیتم میکند و گمان نمیکنم تا مدتها از تاثیرش راحت شوم... درست همین چند لحظه ی پیش بود که در پارک بودم. ریشه ی درخت بلوط دقیقا زیر نیمکتی که نشسته بودم در عمق خاک چنگ زده بود. دیگر نمیتوانم تشخیص بدم که آن چیزی که دیدم "ریشه" بوده است. کلمات از ذهنم پاک شدند و با محو شدن کلمات، دیگر همه چیز برایم بی معناست."

یک روزی بود و یک روزگاری. یک مرد کاسب بود که در قلعه ای زندگی می کرد و کارش پوستین دوزی بود.
از قصابهای ده پوست گوسفند و گاو میخرید و آنها را دباغی میکرد و پوستین درست میکرد و میفروخت.
از قضا یک شب روباه گرسنه ای از نزدیک قلعه میگذشت و بوی پوست گوسفند به دماغش خورد و به طمع خوراک از سوراخ راه آب که نزدیک در قلعه بود وارد قلعه شد و با بو کشیدن خود را به دکان مرد پوستین دوز رسانید و به سراغ پوستها رفت.
روباه که از بوی پوستهای خیس شده خوشحال شده بود، چند تا از پوستها را به دندان کشید و چند تکه را خورد و بعضی را پاره کرد و چون دید خبری از گوشت نیست از همان راهی که آمده بود، برگشت و به صحرا فرار کرد.

روباه با خود گفت: «عجب گیری افتادم! این مردم تا بدن مرا تکه تکه نکنند، دست از سرم برنمیدارند. تا دعوا بر سر پشم بود، پشمش دانستم، و تا صحبت از گوش بود، کار خود را پشت گوش انداختم و تا حرف از دندان بود، دندان بر جگر گذاشتم و صبر کردم. اما حالا که کارد به استخوانم رسیده است، صبر و سکوت از همه چیز بدتر است، باید برخیزم و خود را نجات بدهم، اگر هم گیر افتادم که دیگر بدتر از این نمیشود.»

Translation - English The fox's patience
Once upon a time, there was a furrier who lived in a castle and his job was making fur garments.
He bought ox hides and sheepskins from the butchers of the village, and then tanned, sewed and made fur garments from them and finally sold them.
By a twist of fate, one night a starving fox who was wandering around near the castle was enticed by the delicious smell of the sheepskin and ox hides so as to satisfy his greed for food, he hunted everywhere to find a way for going inside the castle.
After some time, he lighted upon a small opening caused by a brook, close to the door of the castle, so he promptly jumped in.
As he entered the castle, he sniffed out that delicious smell of the sheepskins and ox hides and finally reached to his destination, the furrier store.
He went for the sheepskins and ox hides to eat them up.
Finding the source of the aroma of the wet sheepskins and ox hides, the fox had become quite cheerful.
He gnawed the skins, ate some of them and ripped up the others.
But as he noticed that there was no flesh inside out, he hopelessly went back tracking the same way he came in and ran away to the desert.

The fox thought, "What a hole I dig myself into! These stupid people will not leave me alone until they tear me apart. I undervalued their deeds as long as they only wanted a piece of my wool. I neglected to react as far as they wanted to cut off my ear. I bit the bullet and held my horses as long as they just wanted to have a tooth pulled. But at this very moment that is the last straw that broke the camel's back, keep being patient and silent are the worst options among all. I should get up, face the situation and survive myself now. It is now or never, even if I could not set myself free and would be hemmed around by these people, black will take no other hue! And the situation cannot be any worse!"
