The interaction of consciousness with the material environment of the city is a recurrent factor in these poems about Dublin. It occurs in various forms. For instance, Patrick Kavanagh was notable for the transition he made from Monaghan to Dublin, and in his Dublin poems there is a tendency to fashion for himself what Antoinette Quinn, in her book about Kavanagh’s poetry, has called an ‘urban self-image’. Kavanagh situates himself in Dublin, to the extent that areas around the Grand Canal are now indelibly associated with him. The image Kavanagh projects of himself in Dublin, however, is often that of a disembodied spirit, imagining himself after death. His poems are full of ghosts, often of himself. In ‘On Raglan Road’ the poem in its final stanza moves towards the ‘quiet street where old ghosts meet’; in ‘If Ever You go To Dublin Town’ (the poem from which this collection takes its title) Kavanagh directs attention to a time after his death and indicates how he expects to be remembered and spoken of in Baggot Street and Pembroke Road and thereabouts. Dublin, its pubs and libraries, becomes his haunt.
If ever you go to Dublin town
In a hundred years or so
Inquire for me in Baggot Street
And what I was like to know. [… ]
On Pembroke Road
Look out for my ghost
Dishevelled with shoes untied,
Playing through.
His sonnet, ‘Lines Written on a Seat on the Grand Canal, Dublin’, looks forward to a time after his death and sets out how he wants to be commemorated. At the same time the poem is expressive of present contentment with the actuality. The movement in the poem is similar in some aspects to that in Paula Meehan’s ‘A Vision of My Father’ which we looked at earlier. Just as there the figure of the father is fulfilled by the arrival of the birds flocking from other parts, here Kavanagh greets the fantastic light that floods through the arch of a bridge and the barge coming from Athy and other far-flung towns. The common effect of these moments is to recognize that there is a larger world outside the Immediate streetscape, and to suggest that the buildings and other structures of the city do not limit the interaction with the world of experience. But Kavanagh, foregrounded as he is in his Dublin poems, is concerned with an idea of himself. The mention of old ghosts meeting in ‘On Raglan Road’ is an incidental occurrence of an image. That he has used at various times in his poetry, but in the other two pieces here the afterlife Presence that he conjures up suggests a concern to order how he is to be perceived. Both of them give instructions, imperatively or imploringly. ‘If you go to Dublin town in a hundred years or so, this is how you will seek and find me, or this is how to commemorate me’.
There is a certain pleasing irony in the fact that Kavanagh, a poet of impeccably rural beginnings, transmuted into an habitué of Dublin, with his later poems foregrounding the city thematically and in many respects taking possession of the capital.

Por ejemplo, Patrick Kavanagh se destacó por la transición que realizara de la rural Monaghan a Dublín, y en sus poemas sobre Dublín tiende a modelarse a sí mismo según una “auto-imagen urbana”, como lo ha señalado Antoinette Quinn en su libro sobre la poética de Kavanagh. Kavanagh instala su ser en Dublín, hasta el punto que las zonas alrededor del Gran Canal se hallan asociadas, de modo indeleble, a él. Source text - English On this occasion, I present the original version (English) of my paper’s conclusions about Nostalgia and Wichí ontology, followed by my translation in Spanish. A synthesis of the whole paper was read at the conference organized by the Society for the Anthropology of Religion (SAR), a section of the American Anthropological Association, during April, 2015 at San Diego, California.
Conclusions
Nostalgia is related to the workings of memory, and it is “a hypochondria of the heart”, a powerful metaphor by which Svetlana Boym described it (Boym, 2001). It fits its sorrow in the frame of storytelling, as Ricœur (1999) and Benjamin (2006) remarked.
I have assumed that from the moment that Wichí people were severed from the world of their mythical ancestors, memory causes them grief. It awakens the feeling of happier days compared to their daily ‘partial presence’ where pleasure and pain are combined, and in the certainty that a complete restoration is impossible.
And yet, in some way, as Benjamin hinted, the original is there as "an echo or a reverberation" (Benjamin 1996: 258) or, as Ricœur expressed it so beautifully:
Les phrases du monde entier flottent entre les hommes comme des papillons insaisissables. (The sentences of the whole world are floating among the people as elusive butterflies)
With respect to Wichí Intersubjectivity, the “mirror movement” (Jackson 1998) between the self and the stranger is possible because of the exchange of spouses. Due to the emphasis on love and respect, both parties should seek for a resemblance that, at least temporarily, may dilute their differences. They do not trust to each other, but the male affine comes to inhabit the household of his family wife. If the years together are lived with contentment, the local hosts will assimilate the stranger. Indeed, a victorious son-in- law will replace his father-in-law as the beloved and respected new chief of the household.
It seems to me a beautiful way to be recognized as a capable and ethical man, responsible for striving for a good life for him and his fellows.

La nostalgia se relaciona con el funcionamiento de la memoria, y constituye "una hipocondría del corazón", según la elocuente metáfora de Svetlana Boym (Boym, 2001). El pesar halla su cauce en el marco de la narración, como Ricoeur (1999) y Benjamín (2006) han señalado.

De hecho, un yerno que salga airoso reemplazará a su suegro como el nuevo jefe del hogar, y será amado y respetado.
Me parece que es una hermosa manera de ser reconocido como un hombre capaz y ético, que asume la responsabilidad de esforzarse para asegurar una buena vida para él y sus semejantes.

Source text - English But the test of anthropological understanding is wordly, not epistemological. Its truth lies in its capacity to help us see that plurality is not inimical but necessary to our integrity, so inspiring us to accept and celebrate the manifold and contradictory character of existence in the knowledge that anyone person embodies the potential to be any other. As Terence's famous stoic dictum has it, humani nil a me alienum puto-being human, nothing human is alien to me.
The argument is for a view of Being as complex, ambiguous, and indeterminate. It is analogous to the argument ecologists make against genetically engineered and global monocultures and for indigenous biodiversity as the only effective way of sustaining life on earth. And it echoes the argument Michael Oakeshott makes in his famous essay on conversation. The task of science, he writes, is not to deliver us from the polyphony of Babel but to accommodate disparate voices, disagreeing with being disagreeable, as in conversation (Oakeshott 1991, 488-89).
Put otherwise, the task of ethnography is not to know the Other in any final sense nor even to know the self through the other. Nor is it to change the lives of others, or even to critique one's own culture. Its warrant and worth lie in its power to describe in depth and detail the dynamics of intersubjective life under a variety of cultural conditions in the hope that one may thereby be led to an understanding of how those rare moments of erasure and effacement occur when self and other are constituted in mutuality and acceptance rather than violence and contempt.

The history of anthropology from Levi-Strauss to the present day has comprised a series of deconstructions of subjectivity. For Levi-Strauss the subjective was synonymous with inwardness and affect and had to give ground to formal models of the mind if we were to grasp the structural logic that underpinned social reality. Foucault, in a famous image, dissolved the subjective into the imperious unity of discourse-a face drawn in sand erased by the sea. Bourdieu disseminated subjectivity into the habitus. And Geertz saw subjectivity as inaccessible except as it found expression in webs of
shared significance and cultural symbols. However, in recent years, subjectivity has not so much been dissolved or denied but relocated. According to this "intersubjective tum" (Joas 1993, 250), selfhood is understood as a bipolar notion, arising from and shaped by ever-altering modalities of embodied social interaction and dialogue (Goffman 1967, 1971; Bakhtin 1981; Graumann 1995; Tedlock and Mannheim 1995). Accordingly, what we commonly call "subjectivity" or "selfhood" are simply arrested moments
artificially isolated from the flux of "interindividual" life (cf. Sartre
1982,99; Crapanzano 1988,4). To echo quantum theory, the subject-object partition is an artifact of our interventional acts of measuring reality; in fact, selves are no more single existences than are atoms and molecules.
Genealogically linked to Buber's concept of the dialogical, Schutz's social phenomenology, the pragmatism of William James, John Dewey, and George Herbert Mead, and existential-phenomenological thought, the focus of intersubjectivity is the interplay of subject and object, ego and alter.
Singular selves are simultaneously part of a commonality, sole but also several, not only islands but part of the main.

La historia de la antropología desde Lévi-Strauss hasta nuestros días ha comprendido una serie de deconstrucciones de la subjetividad.
