Today, Chanel creative director Lagerfeld and the fashion set are descending upon El Paseo del Prado, one of the main streets in Havana that divides Centro Habana from Old Havana, to experience the Parisian fashion house’s 2016-17 cruise runway show.
Chanel posted a photo of the Cuban flag to announce the arrival of the brand’s team two days ago. Other guests such as The Coveteur’s creative director and co-founder Jake Rosenberg started posting photos on social media using the hashtag #CocoCuba on Monday, May 2.
Gisele Bundchen, a face of Chanel — who was notably absent from last night’s “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” themed Met Ball in New York City — captioned a snapshot of the city on her Instagram: “Hola Cuba!”
A VIP welcome kit from Chanel included a straw fedora by Maison Michel (the label’s couture millinery), a Havana map and guide book and Sublimage sunblock.
The majority of Chanel’s celebrity ambassadors — Kristen Stewart, Lily-Rose Depp and Willow Smith — were at the Met Gala, and whether or not they caught a private flight to Havana remains to be seen. If they've managed to wing their way there, they may end up witnessing Fidel Castro’s grandson Tony Castro, who is rumored to be walking in today’s show.
The running Chanel exhibition is divided into three sections representing the designer’s main interests — fashion, architecture and landscapes — with more than 200 of Lagerfeld's photographs.

A handful of scientists around the United States are trying to do something that some people find disturbing: make embryos that are part human, part animal.
The researchers hope these embryos, known as chimeras, could eventually help save the lives of people with a wide range of diseases.
One way would be to use chimera embryos to create better animal models to study how human diseases happen and how they progress.
Perhaps the boldest hope is to create farm animals that have human organs that could be transplanted into terminally ill patients.
But some scientists and bioethicists worry the creation of these interspecies embryos crosses the line. "You're getting into unsettling ground that I think is damaging to our sense of humanity," says Stuart Newman, a professor of cell biology and anatomy at the New York Medical College.
The experiments are so sensitive that the National Institutes of Health has imposed a moratorium on funding them while officials explore the ethical issues they raise.
Nevertheless, a small number of researchers are pursuing the work with alternative funding. They hope the results will persuade the NIH to lift the moratorium.
"We're not trying to make a chimera just because we want to see some kind of monstrous creature," says Pablo Ross, a reproductive biologist at the University of California, Davis. "We're doing this for a biomedical purpose."
The NIH is expected to announce soon how it plans to handle requests for funding.
Recently, Ross agreed to let me visit his lab for an unusual look at his research. During the visit, Ross demonstrated how he is trying to create a pancreas that theoretically could be transplanted into a patient with diabetes.
The first step involves using new gene-editing techniques to remove the gene that pig embryos need to make a pancreas.
Working under an elaborate microscope, Ross makes a small hole in the embryo's outer membrane with a laser. Next, he injects a molecule synthesized in the laboratory to home in on and delete the pancreas gene inside. (In separate experiments, he has done this to sheep embryos, too.)
After the embryos have had their DNA edited this way, Ross creates another hole in the membrane so he can inject human induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS for short, into the pig embryos.
Like human embryonic stem cells, iPS cells can turn into any kind of cell or tissue in the body. The researchers' hope is that the human stem cells will take advantage of the void in the embryo to start forming a human pancreas.
Because iPS cells can be made from any adult's skin cells, any organs they form would match the patient who needs the transplant, vastly reducing the risk that the body would reject the new organ.
But for the embryo to develop and produce an organ, Ross has to put the chimera embryos into the wombs of adult pigs. That involves a surgical procedure, which is performed in a large operating room across the street from Ross's lab.
The day Ross opened his lab to me, a surgical team was anesthetizing an adult female pig so surgeons could make an incision to get access to its uterus.
Ross then rushed over with a special syringe filled with chimera embryos. He injected 25 embryos into each side of the animal's uterus. The procedure took about an hour. He repeated the process on a second pig.
Every time Ross does this, he then waits a few weeks to allow the embryos to develop to their 28th day — a time when primitive structures such as organs start to form.
Ross then retrieves the chimeric embryos to dissect them so he can see what the human stem cells are doing inside. He examines whether the human stem cells have started to form a pancreas, and whether they have begun making any other types of tissues.
The uncertainty is part of what makes the work so controversial. Ross and other scientists conducting these experiments can't know exactly where the human stem cells will go. Ross hopes they'll only grow a human pancreas. But they could go elsewhere, such as to the brain.
"If you have pigs with partly human brains you would have animals that might actually have consciousness like a human," Newman says. "It might have human-type needs. We don't really know."
That possibility raises new questions about the morality of using the animals for experimentation. Another concern is that the stem cells could form human sperm and human eggs in the chimeras.
"If a male chimeric pig mated with a female chimeric pig, the result could be a human fetus developing in the uterus of that female chimera," Newman says. Another possibility is the animals could give birth to some kind of part-human, part-pig creature.
"One of the concerns that a lot of people have is that there's something sacrosanct about what it means to be human expressed in our DNA," says Jason Robert, a bioethicist at Arizona State University. "And that by inserting that into other animals and giving those other animals potentially some of the capacities of humans that this could be a kind of violation — a kind of, maybe, even a playing God."
Ross defends what his work. "I don't consider that we're playing God or even close to that," Ross says. "We're just trying to use the technologies that we have developed to improve peoples' life."
Still, Ross acknowledges the concerns. So he's moving very carefully, he says. For example, he's only letting the chimera embryos develop for 28 days. At that point, he removes the embryos and dissects them.
If he discovers the stem cells are going to the wrong places in the embryos, he says he can take steps to stop that from happening. In addition, he'd make sure adult chimeras are never allowed to mate, he says.
"We're very aware and sensitive to the ethical concerns," he says. "One of the reasons we're doing this research the way we're doing it is because we want to provide scientific information to inform those concerns."
Ross is working with Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte from the Salk Intitute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif., and Hiromitsu Nakauchi at Stanford University. Daniel Garry of the University of Minnesota and colleagues are conducting similar work. The research is funded in part by the Defense Department and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM).

Do you ever feel that, by introducing Jesus as an adult without telling of his miraculous birth, Mark skipped a crucial part of Jesus’s story? Without the Nativity, however, we can still see from the opening phrase that the author focuses on the reality that God became a person. Francis, in the video, asks us to “let that sink in. Have you really considered the immensity of that statement—of the event in which God became a man?” He then prays, “Teach us to marvel again, to be fascinated with the Good News of Jesus Christ, that God became a human.”
Mark tosses us into the scene of Jesus’s baptism by John—the event that launched his preaching ministry. Here we see the story from Jesus’s point of view. He’s coming up out of the water, John by his side, when we hear a voice from heaven saying, “You are my beloved Son.”
If you’ve grown up in church, thinking of Jesus as the Son of God may not seem so exceptional. It’s just who he is, one of his titles, a way in which we talk about him. All of that is true. But Francis challenges believers to look anew at Jesus—the Son of God who came to earth as a human being. New believers are still in awe of the Incarnation—the idea that God would choose to take on humanity as part of his plan to redeem his people from their sin. Because of his great love for us, the creator of the world, the Son of God, became a man, fully human while still fully God—it’s an incredible mystery. He did this so that he could save us not from socio-economic troubles or military oppression, but from eternal separation from himself.
As we explore the Gospel of Mark, we will find a laser-like focus on the divinity of Jesus. Mark makes no apology for presenting the Son of God to his readers. And Francis reminds us that a man declaring he is God is something we must not ignore or disengage from. It’s huge. This claim should not be underestimated. We must decide if we can accept Jesus as Mark presents him. Is he God? If so, what does that mean for our lives? How will that reality affect our attitude, beliefs, and behaviors? If you’ve been a Christian for a while, have you lost your fascination with Jesus being the Son of God—the creator becoming one of his creatures, the divine becoming fully human?

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze” (Isaiah 43:1–2).
When you read the story of David and Goliath in the Bible, one of the first things you notice is that the Israelite army was “dismayed and terrified” of the giant (1 Samuel 17:11). Goliath started each day with taunts and ended each day with taunts. As time went by, all that demoralizing and diminishing had an effect on the Israelites. They began to believe in spite of their best efforts, something undesirable was going to happen to them . . . their defeat.
This is basically the definition of fear—the belief that something is out there that is going to get you that you can’t do anything to stop. This fear can manifest itself in many different ways—anxiety, nervousness, worry, stress, dread, hopelessness, panic, to name a few—and can spring up in your life from a variety of sources. Perhaps you experience fear as a result of the environment in which you were raised. Maybe your family treated life like one big threat that never diminished. At any minute, something could go wrong . . . and it probably would.
Or perhaps you experience fear as a result of trying to conceal mistakes and imperfections in your life. You are ashamed of something you’ve done in the past, and you worry that one day it will be made public and brought to light. Or perhaps you experience fear as a result of trying to control too many things in your life. You’ve realized that most things in life are out of your control, and this makes you fearful about what will happen in the future.
The giant of fear can get a foothold in your life and begin to dominate you. It can demoralize you and ultimately diminish God’s glory in your life. It can chew away at your life, erode your sense of confidence, rob you of sleep, blind you, and steal your praise to God. Fear is a relentless giant. And it is one that must fall through the power of Jesus.
The solution to facing the giant of fear is not determination but faith in Jesus. It isn’t so much saying, “Fear, go away,” but confessing, “I have confidence that Jesus is bigger than this giant and has already defeated it.” In Romans 10:17, Paul states, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (NKJV). When you see and hear God in and through his Word, the Word allows you to see and hear that He is bigger than your giant. That builds up your faith, and your faith in turn becomes the stone that shuts up the giant that’s already defeated.
So today, identify the source of your fear and place it in the hands of Jesus. Remind yourself that with God all things are possible (see Matthew 19:26) and he is able to overcome this giant. Remember that Jesus has promised to always be with you (see Hebrews 13:5). Name what is keeping you up at night, and then offload those cares to the One who has promised to care for you (see 1 Peter 5:7). Then fill your mouth with praise because you see God’s might, recognize his love for you, and know that he will always come through. His mercy will never fail (see Lamentations 3:22).
As you do this, even though the cause of your fear may not be removed, you will be actively relegating fear to its proper place: into the hands of Christ.

Talvez você sinta medo por ser controlador, mas percebe que a maioria das coisas na sua vida está fora do seu controle fazendo com que sinta medo do que poderá acontecer no futuro.
O gigante do medo pode se fixar dentro de você e começar a dominá-lo. Pode te desmoralizar e, por fim, diminuir a glória de Deus no seu viver. Pode consumir a sua vida, desgastar seu senso de confiança, roubar o seu sono, cegá-lo e impedi-lo de louvar a Deus. O medo é um gigante implacável e só pode ser derrotado pelo poder de Jesus.
A solução para enfrentar o gigante do medo não é determinação, mas fé em Jesus. Não é dizer: “Medo, vá embora”, mas confessar: “Tenho confiança que Jesus é maior do que esse gigante e que Ele já o derrotou”. Paulo afirma em Romanos 10:17 que "a fé vem por se ouvir a mensagem, e a mensagem é ouvida mediante a palavra de Cristo” (NVI). Quando você enxerga e ouve a Deus na Sua palavra e pela Sua palavra, ela permite que você consiga enxergar e ouvir que Ele é maior do que o seu gigante.
