Bio
My name is Paula García and I am an English to Spanish translator, proofreader and researcher with more than 10 years of experience.

In my work as a translator, I have comprehensive experience working with International Organizations, like the UN OHCHR, the UNESCO, the WHO, the WIPO, the European Council, or the HRFT.

Having passed the 2014 LCE Spanish Copy Preparer/Proofreader/Production Editor, I am now included in the UN roster. I have also passed the EPSO/CAST/S/1/2011 Translators Spanish-Language Competitive Examination, which granted my inclusion in the roster of the EU Translators Database. Recently I passed the admission test for the Spanish translation team at Amnesty International and I volunteer at Translators Without Borders.

One of my most rewarding professional projects was the translation of the medical evaluation manuals of the Istanbul Protocol: Manual on the Effective Investigation and Documentation of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (HRFT). It was tough and intense work, but the feeling of contributing to a worthy and necessary cause made it really satisfying.

I strongly believe our work as translators, however invisible it might appear to others, helps people in very direct manners. I have been glad to see first-hand how the texts I translated have improved the lives of hundreds of people, from the implantation of Canadian Best Practice Guidelines I translated for Spanish hospitals, to assisting in the adoption process of a Nigerian child with a heart condition by translating the medical reports that helped coordinate the international team of doctors responsible for his healing.

I have worked in a wide variety of environments and fields: I have gone from translating 19th Century English authors like Charlotte Brontë, Louisa May Alcott or Evelyn Waugh, to translating more than 30 Disney children's books, as well as transcreating for clients like McDonalds or Cirque du Soleil. I have freelanced for both local and international clients, project managed for clients like Imaginarium, AENA or Movistar, and been part of a team of in-house translators at a clinical research facility. This diversity of work environments has helped me become very adaptable and a fast learner, come into contact and communicate effectively with many people from different cultures, languages and backgrounds, master several CAT tools like SDL Trados Studio or DéjàVu, hone my computer skills, prioritize tasks and manage my own time efficiently to meet often-tight deadlines, and happily integrate within existing teams of translators.

I am in possession of a Master's Degree in Comparative Linguistics and International Communication, which I obtained with honors in 2013. I became part of the first ever Translation Studies class at the Complutense University in Madrid in 1999, and in 2003 I graduated with honors as first of my class.
