Source text - French Il semble perplexe et je comprends vite que lui aussi ne connaît pas réellement la définition du mot « féministe » qu’il associe à une bande de mégères enragées. Pourtant, le terme « féminisme » n’est pas synonyme de haine des hommes.
Comme le disait Emma Watson dans son discours du 20 septembre à l’occasion du lancement de la campagne « HeForShe », « le féminisme se définit comme la conviction que les hommes et les femmes doivent jouir des mêmes droits et des mêmes chances. Est féministe toute personne qui croit en l’égalité politique, économique et sociale des sexes. »
Je continue sur ma lancée et lui explique que c’est une cause à prendre au sérieux. En 2015, il y a des femmes qui n’ont pas le droit de conduire, pas droit à l’éducation, qui assistent à des conférences assises par terre, car elles n’ont pas droit à un siège comme les hommes. Il y a des pays où le viol est commis en toute impunité. Un président turc qui affirme que « les femmes ne doivent pas être considérées comme les égales des hommes ». Qu’une femme sur trois est victime de violence conjugale. C’est scandaleux, amoral, révoltant, choquant et encore plein d’autres synonymes.
Fort heureusement, on assiste ces dernières années à une popularisation du mouvement féministe (mais pas du terme en lui-même, malheureusement). De plus en plus de personnalités influentes défendent ouvertement cette cause. Christina Aguilera le faisait déjà, vulgairement certes, dans son clip « Can’t Hold Us Down ». Beyoncé le revendique en reprenant une partie du discours de Chimamande Ngozi Adichie dans son single « Flawless ». Patricia Arquette fait de même lors de la cérémonie des Oscars et est applaudie par Meryl Streep. Gucci a lancé sa campagne internationale « Chime For Change ». Il y a des féministes radicales, un peu moins élégantes et plus provocatrices qu’Emma, dont les seins nus sont souvent médiatisés et qu’on nomme Femens. Et puis il y a des hommes comme Guy-Bernard Cadière et Denis Mukwege, tous deux médecins engagés contre la violence envers les femmes. Le message est parfois transmis de manière maladroite, et pas tout le temps intelligemment, mais il est clair : l’égalité des sexes, partout et pour tous.
Après avoir défini le terme « féministe » à mon interlocuteur, celui-ci me répond que pour lui le terme n’a pas été choisi correctement. Si c’est l’égalité pour tous qu’on défend, on devrait appeler ça « humaniste » ou « égalitariste », me rétorque-t-il. Je ne lui donne pas raison tout de suite, encore trop exaltée par mon argumentation, je reste sur mes positions et me revendique féministe. Pourtant, il n’a pas tort. Peut-être aurait-il été, lui et beaucoup d’autres hommes, un bien meilleur activiste si le terme « féministe » ne comportait pas une connotation si négative. Dans certaines interviews que j’ai lues, les hommes commencent souvent leur phrase par « je ne dirais pas féministe, mais je suis pour l’égalité des sexes… ». Messieurs, vous êtes donc bien féministes, ou si vous préférez, égalitaristes. Peu importe le terme utilisé après tout.
La cause défendue est la même.
Translation - English He seems perplexed. I quickly realise that he doesn’t really understand the word “feminist”, which he associates with gangs of angry shrew-like females. However, the word “feminism” isn’t a synonym for “man hating”.
Like Emma Watson said in her speech on the 20th of September as she launched the HeForShe campaign: “feminism by definition is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of political, economic and social equality of the sexes”.
I continue in this vein, explaining to him that this is an issue he should be taking seriously. In 2015, there are women who don’t have the right to drive, or to have an education, or who sit on the floor at meetings because they don’t have the right to a chair like the men. There are countries where rape is committed without fear of consequences. A Turkish President who declared that “women shouldn’t be considered as equal to men”. One woman in three is a victim of domestic violence. It’s scandalous, immoral, revolting, shocking, and so many other synonyms.
Thankfully, the past few years have seen a surge in popularity for the feminist movement (but not for the word “feminism” itself, unfortunately). More and more influential names are openly defending the cause. Christina Aguilera has done it (admittedly, coarsely) in her clip “Can’t Hold Us Down”. Beyoncé affirmed it by including an extract from a speech by Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche in her single “Flawless”. Patricia Arquette did the same in her Oscar speech and was applauded by Meryl Streep. Gucci launched an international campaign called “Chime for Change”. There are radical feminists, a little less elegant and more provocative than Emma, whose naked breasts are frequently broadcast, whose name is Femen. And then there are men like Guy-Bernard Cadière and Denis Mukwege, doctors who are dedicated to working against violence towards women.The message is sometimes sent in a clumsy manner, and it’s not always intelligent, but it’s clear: equality of the sexes, everywhere and for everyone.
Having defined the word “feminist” to my friend, he tells me that for him, the term doesn’t cut it. If equality is for everyone, we should be saying “humanist” or “egalitarian”, he retorts. I disagree immediately, still exhilarated by my arguments, I stick with my decision and declare myself a feminist. For all that though, he’s not wrong. Maybe my friend, and many other men, could be much better activists if the term “feminist” didn’t have so many negative connotations. In interviews I’ve read, men have started sentences with “I wouldn’t say I’m a feminist, but I’m for the equality of the sexes…” Sirs, with respect, you are indeed feminists. Or egalitarians, if you prefer. After all, the words we use don’t really matter.
The cause is the same.
