I
As long ago as 1860 it was the proper thing to be born at home. At present, so I am told, the high gods of medicine have decreed that the first cries of the young shall be uttered upon the anesthetic air of a hospital, preferably a fashionable one. So young Mr. and Mrs. Roger Button were fifty years ahead of style when they decided, one day in the summer of 1860, that their first baby should be born in a hospital. Whether this anachronism had any bearing upon the astonishing history I am about to set down will never be known.
I shall tell you what occurred, and let you judge for yourself.
The Roger Buttons held an enviable position, both social and financial, in ante bellum Baltimore. They were related to the This Family and the That Family, which, as every Southerner knew, entitled them to membership in that enormous peerage which largely populated the Confederacy. This was their first experience with the charming old custom of having babies - Mr. Button was naturally nervous. He hoped it would be a boy so that he could be sent to Yale College in Connecticut, at which institution Mr. Button himself had been known for four years by the somewhat obvious nickname of "Cuff."
On the September morning consecrated to the enormous event he arose nervously at six o'clock dressed himself, adjusted an impeccable stock, and hurried forth through the streets of Baltimore to the hospital, to determine whether the darkness of the night had borne in new life upon its bosom.
When he was approximately a hundred yards from the Maryland Private Hospital for Ladies and Gentlemen he saw Doctor Keene, the family physician, descending the front steps, rubbing his hands together with a washing movement - as all doctors are required to do by the unwritten ethics of their profession.
Mr. Roger Button, the president of Roger Button & Co., Wholesale Hardware, began to run toward Doctor Keene with much less dignity than was expected from a Southern gentleman of that picturesque period.
"Doctor Keene!" he called. "Oh, Doctor Keene!"
The doctor heard him, faced around, and stood waiting, a curious expression settling on his harsh, medicinal face as Mr. Button drew near.
"What happened?" demanded Mr. Button, as he came up in a gasping rush. "What was it? How is she" A boy? Who is it? What -"
"Talk sense!" said Doctor Keene sharply, He appeared somewhat irritated.
"Is the child born?" begged Mr. Button.
Doctor Keene frowned. "Why, yes, I suppose so - after a fashion." Again he threw a curious glance at Mr. Button.
"Is my wife all right?"
"Yes."
"Is it a boy or a girl?"
"Here now!" cried Doctor Keene in a perfect passion of irritation, "I'll ask you to go and see for yourself. Outrageous!" He snapped the last word out in almost one syllable, then he turned away muttering: "Do you imagine a case like this will help my professional reputation? One more would ruin me - ruin anybody."
"What's the matter?" demanded Mr. Button appalled. "Triplets?"
"No, not triplets!" answered the doctor cuttingly. "What's more, you can go and see for yourself. And get another doctor. I brought you into the world, young man, and I've been physician to your family for forty years, but I'm through with you! I don't want to see you or any of your relatives ever again! Good - bye!"
Then he turned sharply, and without another word climbed into his phaeton, which was waiting at the curbstone, and drove severely away.
Mr. Button stood there upon the sidewalk, stupefied and trembling from head to foot. What horrible mishap had occurred? He had suddenly lost all desire to go into the Maryland Private Hospital for Ladies and Gentlemen - it was with the greatest difficulty that, a moment later, he forced himself to mount the steps and enter the front door.
A nurse was sitting behind a desk in the opaque gloom of the hall. Swallowing his shame, Mr. Button approached her.
"Good morning," she remarked, looking up at him pleasantly.
"Good morning. I - I am Mr. Button."
At this a look of utter terror spread itself over girl's face. She rose to her feet and seemed about to fly from the hall, restraining herself only with the most apparent difficulty.
"I want to see my child," said Mr. Button.
The nurse gave a little scream. "Oh - of course!" she cried hysterically. "Upstairs. Right upstairs. Go - up!"
She pointed the direction, and Mr. Button, bathed in cool perspiration, turned falteringly, and began to mount to the second floor. In the upper hall he addressed another nurse who approached him, basin in hand. "I'm Mr. Button," he managed to articulate. "I want to see my -"
Clank! The basin clattered to the floor and rolled in the direction of the stairs. Clank! Clank! I began a methodical decent as if sharing in the general terror which this gentleman provoked.
"I want to see my child!" Mr. Button almost shrieked. He was on the verge of collapse.
Clank! The basin reached the first floor. The nurse regained control of herself, and threw Mr. Button a look of hearty contempt.
"All right, Mr. Button," she agreed in a hushed voice. "Very well! But if you knew what a state it's put us all in this morning! It's perfectly outrageous! The hospital will never have a ghost of a reputation after -"
"Hurry!" he cried hoarsely. "I can't stand this!"
"Come this way, then, Mr. Button."
He dragged himself after her. At the end of a long hall they reached a room from which proceeded a variety of howls - indeed, a room which, in later parlance, would have been known as the "crying - room." They entered.
Ranged around the walls were half a dozen white - enameled rolling cribs, each with a tag tied at the head.
"Well," gasped Mr. Button, "which is mine?"
"There!" said the nurse.
Mr. Button's eyes followed her pointing finger, and this is what he saw. Wrapped in a voluminous white blanket, and partly crammed into one of the cribs, there sat an old man apparently about seventy years of age. His sparse hair was almost white, and from his chin dripped a long smoke - colored beard, which waved absurdly back and forth, fanned by the breeze coming in at the window. He looked up at Mr. Button with dim, faded eyes in which lurked a puzzled question.
"Am I mad?" thundered Mr. Button, his terror resolving into rage. "Is this some ghastly hospital joke?
"It doesn't seem like a joke to us," replied the nurse severely. "And I don't know whether you're mad or not - but that is most certainly your child."
The cool perspiration redoubled on Mr. Button's forehead. He closed his eyes, and then, opening them, looked again. There was no mistake - he was gazing at a man of threescore and ten - a baby of threescore and ten, a baby whose feet hung over the sides of the crib in which it was reposing.
The old man looked placidly from one to the other for a moment, and then suddenly spoke in a cracked and ancient voice. "Are you my father?" he demanded.
Mr. Button and the nurse started violently.
"Because if you are," went on the old man querulously, "I wish you'd get me out of this place - or, at least, get them to put a comfortable rocker in here,"
"Where in God's name did you come from? Who are you?" burst out Mr. Button frantically.
"I can't tell you exactly who I am," replied the querulous whine, "because I've only been born a few hours - but my last name is certainly Button."
"You lie! You're an impostor!"
The old man turned wearily to the nurse. "Nice way to welcome a new - born child," he complained in a weak voice. "Tell him he's wrong, why don't you?"
"You're wrong. Mr. Button," said the nurse severely. "This is your child, and you'll have to make the best of it. We're going to ask you to take him home with you as soon as possible - some time today."
"Home?" repeated Mr. Button incredulously.
"Yes, we can't have him here. We really can't, you know?"
"I'm right glad of it," whined the old man. "This is a fine place to keep a youngster of quiet tastes. With all this yelling and howling, I haven't been able to get a wink of sleep. I asked for something to eat" - here his voice rose to a shrill note of protest - "and they brought me a bottle of milk!"
Mr. Button sank down upon a chair near his son and concealed his face in his hands. "My heavens!" he murmured, in an ecstasy of horror. "What will people say? What must I do?"
"You'll have to take him home," insisted the nurse - "immediately!"
A grotesque picture formed itself with dreadful clarity before the eyes of the tortured man - a picture of himself walking through the crowded streets of the city with this appalling apparition stalking by his side. "I can't. I can't," he moaned.
People would stop to speak to him, and what was he going to say? He would have to introduce this - this septuagenarian: "This is my son, born early this morning." And then the old man would gather his blanket around him and they would plod on, past the bustling stores, the slave market - for a dark instant Mr. Button wished passionately that his son was black - past the luxurious houses of the residential district, past the home for the aged...
"Come! Pull yourself together," commanded the nurse.
"See here," the old man announced suddenly, "if you think I'm going to walk home in this blanket, you're entirely mistaken."
"Babies always have blankets."
With a malicious crackle the old man held up a small white swaddling garment. "Look!" he quavered. "This is what they had ready for me."
"Babies always wear those," said the nurse primly.
"Well," said the old man, "this baby's not going to wear anything in about two minutes. This blanket itches. They might at least have given me a sheet."
"Keep it on! Keep it on!" said Mr. Button hurriedly. He turned to the nurse. "What'll I do?"
"Go down town and buy your son some clothes."
Mr. Button's son's voice followed him down into the: hall: "And a cane, father. I want to have a cane."
Mr. Button banged the outer door savagely...
Translation - Portuguese O CURIOSO CASO DE BENJAMIN BUTTON

Nos longínquos tempos de 1860, era de preceito nascer em casa. Nos dias de hoje, ao que me dizem, os grandes deuses da medicina decretaram que os primeiros gritos da mocidade devem ser emitidos no anestésico ar de um hospital, de preferência de um que esteja em voga. Por isso, o jovem casal Button estava cinquenta anos à frente das modas do seu tempo quando, num dia de verão de 1860, decidiu que o seu primeiro rebento haveria de nascer num hospital. Se este anacronismo esteve, de alguma forma, relacionado com a surpreendente história que irei agora lavrar, isso nunca se saberá.
Dir-vos-ei como tudo se passou e deixo que façam os vossos juízos.
Os senhores Button ocupavam uma posição invejável, quer social, quer financeiramente, na Baltimore ante bellum. Eram aparentados com Esta Família e Aqueloutra Família, o que, como sabiam todos os Sulistas, lhes conferia o direito de ingressarem na vasta elite que povoava quase toda a Confederação. Era esta a sua primeira experiência com o antigo e encantador costume de ter filhos. O Sr. Button estava, naturalmente, nervoso. Esperava que fosse um rapaz, para o enviar para a Universidade de Yale, no Connecticut, uma instituição onde o próprio Sr. Button fora, durante quatro anos, conhecido pela relativamente óbvia alcunha de “Punho”.
Na manhã de setembro consagrada ao grande acontecimento, o Sr. Button levantou-se nervosamente às seis da manhã, vestiu-se, acomodou um impecável lenço à volta do pescoço e apressou-se pelas ruas de Baltimore a caminho do hospital, a fim de averiguar se a escuridão da noite trouxera no seu seio uma nova vida.
Quando se encontrava a cerca de noventa metros do Hospital Privado de Maryland para Senhoras e Cavalheiros, viu o Dr. Keene, médico da família, descer a escadaria da frente, esfregando as mãos como se as estivesse a lavar – como é, aliás, tacitamente exigido a todos os médicos pela ética da sua profissão.
O Sr. Roger Button, presidente da Roger Button & Co., Grossistas de Ferragens, começou a correr em direção ao Dr. Keene, com muito menos dignidade do que a que seria de esperar de um carvalheiro sulista daquele pitoresco período.
– Dr. Keene! – gritou. – Ó, Dr. Keene!
O médico ouviu-o, voltou-se e parou à espera, assomando-lhe ao rosto severo e medicinal, enquanto o Sr. Button se aproximava, uma expressão curiosa.
– O que aconteceu? – perguntou o Sr. Button, subindo as escadas numa correria ofegante. – O que foi? Como está ela? Um rapaz? Quem é? O que...?
– Fale como deve ser, homem! – disse bruscamente o Dr. Keene, que parecia um pouco irritado.
– A criança já nasceu? – perguntou o Sr. Button.
O Dr. Keene franziu o sobrolho.
– Ora, pois, pode dizer-se que sim – respondeu o médico, lançando novamente um olhar curioso ao Sr. Button.
– A minha esposa está bem?
– Sim.
– É um rapaz ou uma rapariga?
– Ora agora! – gritou o Dr. Keene num autêntico acesso de cólera. – Vá ver com os seus próprios olhos. Um ultraje!
Rosnou estas palavras quase numa única sílaba e então voltou costas, resmungando:
– Agora um caso destes vai lá ajudar a minha reputação profissional! Mais um e estou arruinado – qualquer um estaria!
– O que aconteceu? – perguntou aterrorizado o Sr. Button. – Gémeos triplos?
– Não, não são gémeos triplos! – respondeu, cortante, o médico. – Além disso, pode ir ver com os seus próprios olhos. E arranje outro médico. Fui eu que o trouxe a si ao mundo, meu caro rapaz, e fui médico da sua família durante quarenta anos, mas já chega! Nunca mais o quero ver, nem a si, nem a ninguém da sua família! Adeus!
O médico voltou-se de forma brusca e, sem mais palavra, subiu para o seu fáeton, que o esperava no lancil, partindo abruptamente.
O Sr. Button ali ficou, no passeio, entorpecido e trémulo da cabeça aos pés. Que terrível contratempo teria ocorrido? Subitamente, perdera a vontade de entrar no Hospital Privado de Maryland para Senhoras e Cavalheiros. Foi com a maior das dificuldades que, momentos mais tarde, se obrigou a subir os degraus e a entrar pela porta da frente.
Atrás de uma secretária, na melancolia opaca do corredor, estava sentada uma enfermeira. Engolindo a sua vergonha, o Sr. Button aproximou-se.
– Bom dia – observou a enfermeira, olhando amavelmente para cima, para o Sr. Button.
– Bom dia. Eu... eu sou o Sr. Button.
Ao som de tais palavras, um olhar de absoluto terror invadiu o rosto da rapariga. Pôs-se então de pé e parecia prestes a voar corredor fora, mas acabou por refrear-se com o que aparentou ser a maior das dificuldades.
– Quero ver o meu filho – disse o Sr. Button.
A enfermeira soltou um gritinho.
– Ó, com certeza! – respondeu ela, esganiçada. – Lá em cima. É já lá em cima. Suba!
Apontou o caminho ao Sr. Button, que, banhado em suores frios, se virou hesitante, começando depois a subir até ao segundo piso. No corredor superior, dirigiu-se a uma outra enfermeira, que se aproximava de bacia na mão.
– Sou o Sr. Button – articulou ele a custo. – Quero ver o meu...
Plim! Retiniu a bacia no chão, rolando na direção das escadas. Plim! Plim! Lançou-se a bacia numa descida metódica, como se partilhasse o terror geral provocado por aquele cavalheiro.
– Quero ver o meu filho! – exclamou o Sr. Button quase num guincho. Estava à beira do colapso.
Plim! A bacia alcançara o primeiro piso. A enfermeira conseguiu então controlar-se e atirou ao Sr. Button um olhar de sentido desprezo.
– Está bem, Sr. Button – disse ela numa voz abafada. – Muito bem. Mas se soubesse em que estado tudo isto nos pôs esta manhã! É um verdadeiro ultraje! O hospital nunca mais terá sequer a sombra de uma boa reputação depois de...
– Despache-se! – gritou ele já rouco. – Não aguento isto!
– Venha então por aqui, Sr. Button.
O Sr. Button arrastou-se atrás da enfermeira. Depois de percorrerem um longo corredor, chegaram a uma sala de onde provinha uma variedade de gemidos – um quarto que, de facto, viria, num linguajar posterior, a ser conhecido como “sala da berraria”. Entraram. Ao longo das paredes, havia meia dúzia de berços de esmalte branco, com rodas, cada qual com uma etiqueta atada à cabeceira.
– Então – arfou o Sr. Button, – qual deles é o meu?
– Está ali – respondeu ela.
Os olhos do Sr. Button seguiram o dedo da enfermeira e o que viram foi o seguinte: enrolado numa volumosa manta branca, e parcialmente enfiado num dos berços, estava um idoso que aparentava cerca de setenta anos. O seu pouco cabelo estava quase branco e do seu queixo pendia uma longa barba, amarelada de fumo, que ondulava, de forma absurda, para trás e para a frente, agitada pela brisa que entrava pela janela. O homem olhou para cima, para o Sr. Button, com uns olhos turvos e esbatidos, de onde espreitava uma dúvida desconcertada.
– Estarei louco? – bradou o Sr. Button, o seu terror decidido a transformar-se em fúria. – Mas isto é alguma graçola macabra que fazem nos hospitais?
– A nós não nos parece uma graçola – ripostou, muito séria, a enfermeira. – E eu não sei se o senhor é louco ou não, mas este é, com toda a certeza, o seu filho.
Os suores frios multiplicaram-se na testa do Sr. Button. Fechou os olhos e, ao abri-los uma outra vez, voltou a olhar para o filho. Não havia dúvidas: encarava um homem que passara já da meia-idade, um bebé de setenta anos, um bebé cujos pés pendiam dos lados do berço em que repousava.
Por um instante, o velho olhou placidamente do Sr. Button para a enfermeira e, de repente, falou, numa voz quebrada e ancestral.
– O senhor é o meu pai? – perguntou.
O Sr. Button e a enfermeira sobressaltaram-se violentamente.
– Porque, se é – continuou o velho rezingão, – gostava que me levasse daqui ou, pelo menos, que os convencesse a trazerem-me uma cadeira de baloiço confortável.
– Por amor de Deus, mas de onde vieste tu? Quem és? – explodiu desenfreado o Sr. Button.
– Não sou capaz de lhe dizer exatamente quem sou – respondeu o choramingas queixoso, – porque nasci há poucas horas, mas o meu último nome é mesmo Button.
– Estás a mentir! És um impostor!
Fatigado, o velho virou-se para a enfermeira.
– Bonita forma de dar as boas-vindas a um recém-nascido – lamentou numa voz fraca. – Porque não lhe diz que está enganado?
– Está enganado, Sr. Button – disse a enfermeira num tom grave. – Este é o seu filho e terá de se conformar com a situação. Temos de lhe pedir que o leve para casa o mais brevemente possível. Ainda hoje.
– Para casa? – repetiu o Sr. Button, incrédulo.
– Sim, não o podemos ter aqui. Não podemos mesmo, compreende?
– E eu fico bem contente – lamuriou-se o velho. – Este lugar é bom é para jovens de gostos simples. Com tanta gritaria e tantos gemidos, nem consegui pregar olho. Pedi qualquer coisa para comer – a sua voz elevou-se a uma esganiçada nota de protesto – e trouxeram-me um biberão com leite!
O Sr. Button afundou-se numa cadeira ao lado do filho e escondeu o rosto nas mãos.
– Céus! – murmurou, num êxtase de terror. – O que irão as pessoas dizer? O que devo fazer?
– Tem de levá-lo para casa – insistiu a enfermeira. – Imediatamente!
Com uma nitidez aterradora, formou-se uma imagem grotesca aos olhos daquele homem atormentado: a imagem dele próprio a caminhar pelas ruas apinhadas de gente com aquela aparição arrepiante a rondá-lo.
– Não posso. Não posso – disse num gemido.
As pessoas parariam para falar com ele e o que diria? Teria de apresentar aquele... aquele septuagenário. “Este é o meu filho, nascido esta manhã bem cedo”. Então, o velho haveria de envolver se na sua manta e caminhariam ambos vagarosamente, passando pelas lojas cheias de vida, pelo mercado de escravos – por um instante sombrio, o Sr. Button desejou fervorosamente que o seu filho fosse negro –, pelas casas luxuosas do bairro residencial, pelo lar de idosos...
– Por favor! Controle-se! – ordenou a enfermeira.
– Ouça – anunciou subitamente o velho, – se julga que vou andar até casa enrolado nesta manta, está muito enganado.
– Todos os bebés usam mantas.
Numa casquinada maléfica, o velho levantou umas fraldas de pano.
– Olhe só! – disse num tremor. – Era isto que tinham preparado para mim.
– É isso que os bebés usam – ripostou, empertigada, a enfermeira.
– Pois bem – disse o velho, – dentro de dois minutos, este bebé não vai vestir é nada. Esta manta dá-me comichão. Antes me tivessem dado um lençol.
– Não tires a manta! Não tires! – disse apressadamente o Sr. Button. Voltou-se então para a enfermeira.
– Mas o que hei de eu fazer?
– Vá à baixa e compre roupa para o seu filho.
A voz do filho do Sr. Button seguiu-o até ao fundo do corredor:
– E uma bengala, pai. Quero uma bengala.
O Sr. Button saiu do hospital, batendo violentamente com a porta.

I have been working as a translator since 2009 and I
am a member of the Portuguese Translators Association since that same year. At
the moment, I work as a freelance translator/reviser/proofreader (EN/IT - PT), mainly
collaborating with companies responsible for translating documents from the
European Commission.
From December 2009 to February 2015, I was the manager
of a small translation agency, where I had the opportunity to work as an
interpreter, in addition to translating and managing not only the company, but
also the company’s translation projects.
In the meantime, in 2011, I took a translation
traineeship at the European Parliament, where I also worked as a translator
after the traineeship (from October 2011 to June 2012).
Apart from my activity as a translator/reviser/proofreader,
I teach Portuguese as a Second/Foreign Language.
I hold a 4-year university degree in Modern Languages
and two post-graduations, one of them in Translation and Language Consultancy.
I also took a 32-hour training in translation for subtitling, among others. I also hold a Master’s Degree in Translation from the
University of Lisbon and I am currently taking a PhD in Translation Studies at the same university.
