BREVE INTRODUCCIÓN A LA HISTORIA UNIVERSAL DE LA JOYERÍA
UN RECORRIDO POR LAS CIVILIZACIONES
EGIPTO
Comprende Sumeria, Babilonia, Mesopotamia, Asiria, Persia y Fenicia.

Sepultura egipcia
Adornos preincaicos

(Biederman

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF JEWELRY
A JOURNEY THROUGH CIVILIZATIONS
EGYPT
Egypt is one of the civilizations that most used jewelry. In its history we can see an abundance of pieces which are rich both in materials and designs as well as their symbolic content, which fortunately can be analyzed today thanks to the custom of burying the dead with a number of pieces that were thought to be useful in the afterlife. According to Laura Di Nobile Carlucci (2004), jewelry in ancient Egypt had the following uses:
Protective amulets and talismans
- Signs of rank and office
- Power and prestige
- Military or civilian awards
- Official decorations for value
- Decoration in temples and palaces
- Burial paraphernalia
- Functional uses
- Seals of kings and pharaohs for legalizing official matters
- Ritual purposes
Most commonly used materials were gold, copper and silver; the latter to a lesser extent than the other metals because at that time it was a scarce and valuable metal, in addition, electrum, a gold alloy with 20% of silver was used. A variety of gemstones such as lapis lazuli, jade and ruby were also used. Many of these materials were associated with religious meanings and beliefs.
GREECE
In Greece, gold was often worked with gemstones. The ancient Greeks were characterized by their development of fine, delicate pieces which made use of spirals and leaves in their design. They made necklaces and bracelets with amber pieces and pins with heads carved from rock crystal, they also wore earrings mandated by their gods as well as funerary accessories. In this category, the Agamemnon mask, made entirely of gold, is one of the most important.
Manufacturing of oval crowns in gold was also important: the laurel wreath awarded to those victorious in battles and sports, this piece was dedicated to the god Apollo and it was believed this allowed one to be endowed with intellect and light.
The Greeks are remembered for their use of different techniques used in the treatment of gemstones, they carved and engraved them; the designs of the pieces were inspired by nature and many others followed in the footsteps of Egyptian designs.
One thing which characterized Greek jewelry was the creation of a new piece, cameo; it was manufactured with a type of agate called Sardius, brought from India.
ROME
Ancient Rome excelled at making jewelry for the hair; the more flamboyant and complicated, the higher the social status. But the piece that stands out the most is the precursor loop to the engagement ring. According to texts, it was made of iron and was a symbol of eternity, the life cycle that the couple was starting and was seen as a promise before society to guarantee respect to the commitment of marriage over time. This piece was a tradition in Roman society. Gold, silver, glass paste, precious stones, pottery, pearls among others were used.
MIDDLE EAST
Comprised by Sumeria, Babylonia, Mesopotamia, Assyria, Persia and Phoenicia. In Mesopotamia and Assyria gold was worked, excelling in granular techniques, consisting of pieces decorated with small gold beads. It has also been recognized for its watermark work.
The Phoenicians, meanwhile, imitated the Egyptians, however it is worth noting their development of new joining techniques and closures. They developed a variety of pieces such as rings, necklaces, charms, carrying amulets, razors and mirrors using materials like gold and bronze, highlighted in the manufacturing of a new piece of jewelry known as Lebrija chandeliers, made of gold, which were assigned divine powers.
BYZANTINE ERA
In this time period what most stands out is the use of Christian symbols such as crosses: these were commonly used as chest pendants. It should be stressed that it was a time of great ostentation with many jewels adorning even clothing.
PRE-COLUMBIAN SOCIETIES
Pre-Columbian and Hispanic society prominently worked gold and silver and some precious stones like emerald, in the case of Colombia and Brazil where there are deposits.
Ornaments for chiefs and priests, as well as funerary objects stand out. In excavated tombs they have discovered masks, helmets, breastplates, turbans and crowns, among other artifacts. The cultures in the areas of Mexico, Colombia and Peru stand out for their jewelry handiwork.
STYLES IN HISTORY
MIDDLE AGES
In this time period jewels were exclusively used by kings, the clergy, rich merchants and nobles, thus converting jewels into a thing of aristocratic privilege. Even in countries like France and England laws were issued which prohibited people from using jewelry made of gold, silver or precious stones. These efforts gave jewelry one meaning: they became symbols of power, authority and wealth, but at the same time were part of the non-aristocratic community’s culture. This community ascribed curative and magical powers to jewelry, which were used in spells and rituals.
Abundant use of precious and semiprecious such as garnet, especially in the French and Scandinavian jewelry stones is noteworthy.
RENAISSANCE
This implied a technological revolution and a revival of the arts, including jewelry. Precious stones like malachite and alabaster were worked on a large scale in order to be employed in architectural decoration.
The use of color was prevalent, pendants are made with many stones as well as being glazed. One of the most recognizable pieces from the period is the pendant and brooch with a small portrait on the front. Another use of great influence and recognition from the time is the influx of jewelry into fashion as an adornment for velvet and silk, garments were embroidered with pearls and applications were made onto precious metals.
There was an influx of well-known painters and sculptors into jewelry design, among those, Albrecht Dürer and Hans Holbein are notable.
XVII TO XIX CENTURY
In this time period, technology allowed for stones of increased hardness to be cut, which gave rise to the diamond. As a result, jewels made from this material are visible and furthermore, these changes are evident in the jewelry which reflected this period’s fashion and trends.
Industrialization facilitated the mass-production of jewelry, which lowered the costs but also created a culture of imitation, giving rise to what is known under the name of "costume jewelry".
The concept of sets appeared, sets of three or four pieces, be they earrings, pendants, rings, bracelets or brooches, among others, were sold together; as well cigar cases, stamps and shoe buckles were created.
TWENTIETH CENTURY
The Art Nouveau movement, was introduced by Rene Lalique in jewelry, and the emergence of designer or contemporary jewelry marked this time in the same manner as modernism and major movements like Arts and Crafts. All of this changed the field of jewelry as a result of the splendor of design. Valuation of forms and piece originality in the cost of the material, caused the jewel to have its social function redefined.
DECORATIVE ARTS IN THE PRADO MUSEUM
In addition to the Treasure of the Dolphin, the Decorative Arts of the Museum section has tapestries, armour and porcelain, as well as a set of 804 medals from the XV to XIX and 946 autonomous Spanish legacy monies provided by Pablo Bosch. Also worth mention, there is a collection of hard stones, which is one of the most important worldwide.
The Treasure of the Dolphin is named for having belonged to Louis of France, the Grand Dolphin, who died during a smallpox epidemic in 1711 without having become king, with part of the kingdom being inherited the following year by his second son, Felipe V of Spain. The first Spanish Bourbon received 169 pieces, a not very large percentage of al those produced (698 inventoried in 1689), but they were deemed among the best in the collection. However almost all of these which still exist were defaced by thieves during the French invasion and another such which took place in the early twentieth century, which further reduced their number to 120. Of these, 49 are made of rock crystal and the other 71 stones (semiprecious stones such as agate, lapis lazuli, chalcedony, jasper, jade, serpentine or alabaster) and other materials such as nautilus shells. The mountings are usually gold, although there are some in silver, both in gild and color, and frequently they are realized with lush glazes and fine (turquoise, amethyst, garnet) and precious stones (diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and rubies) as well as with pearls.
THE ART OF JEWELRY IN THE 20TH CENTURY.- THE CLOSE CONNECTION BETWEEN ARTISTS AND JEWELRY.
Source: Institut Valencià d'Art Modern
The great artists that have dedicated themselves to jewelry is notable. The Spanish jewelry sector has had the privilege of coming face-to-face with one such specimen, organized by the IVAM, through Commissioner Diane Venet, which from a new perspective, has shown the public the connection between jewelry and artistic production through a selection of more than 220 jewelry pieces designed by some of the most important artists of the second half of the twentieth century and the nineteenth. Amongst those included: Valerio Adami, Miquel Barcelo, Louise Bourgeois, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Giorgio de Chirico, Jean Cocteau, André Derain, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Julio Gonzalez, Keith Haring, Jacques Lipchitz, Roberto Matta, Jeff Koons, Jannis Kounellis, Fernand Leger, Roy Lichtenstein, Fausto Melotti, Miquel Navarro, Yoko Ono, Jaume Plensa, Pablo Picasso, Man Ray, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella and Bernar Venet.
The jewels come, mostly, from the private collection of exhibition curator Diane Venet, as well as various European artists and collectors.
Very few artists made jewelry before the twentieth century. The Florentine Renaissance sculptor Benvenuto Cellini was one of the exceptions. In the sixteenth century he created his 'Perseus' in Florence, in the Piazza della Signoria, with the skill of a goldsmith. Much later, some jewelers were considered artists, as well as artisans. Faberge jewelry definitely turned jewelry into art but he was neither sculptor nor painter.
The overlap between sculpture and handmade individual jewelry pieces can be said to begin with the Catalan modernism, a style that encompasses all art forms including architecture, and was epitomized by the architect Antonio Gaudi (1852-1926). Another noteworthy artist is the sculptor Julio González, whose activity as a jewelry designer was parallel to his career as the first sculptor to work with wrought iron. In the exhibition visitors can contemplate a necklace by Julio González from the collection of the IVAM. At the same time, in Austria, Gustav Klimt was designing his own jewelry just like the Hungarian artist Béla Voros.
In Germany, the Bauhaus expanded the range of materials used by artists to make jewelry. Artisan production was in Bauhaus for the first time considered, almost on par with the major arts and, therefore, the line between them faded to the point that painters, sculptors and architects felt comfortable making artesan pieces. The artist Anni Albers cleared the path for work with 'waste' materials. Bauhaus teacher Josef Albers, in 1941, made a brooch with a filter trough suspended by aluminum clips made to hold paper.
The influence of the Bauhaus permeated the work of later artists such as Robert Rauschenberg who used scrap materials to create sculptures. In the same line, the Italian sculptor Alberto Giacometti made his first jewelry piece in 1935, which were the result of a failed attempt when designing buttons for Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli. Cast in bronze, they were rejected as being too heavy so he turned them into pendants and brooches for his friends (Cocteau, etc).
In 1940, the Lithuanian Jacques Lipchitz, made a unique bracelet made of coral and silver similar to an abacus. This piece belongs to Diane Venet and is part of the exhibition. Moreover, the Italian sculptor Gino Severini, a signatory of the Futurist Painting manifesto (with Balla and Boccioni), enjoyed creating works full of rhythm. A bracelet made in 1940, one of a kind, evoking the shackle of a slave. It can also be seen in the exhibition. In France, in the thirties, Pablo Picasso, when he was in love with Dora Maar, picked up stones and painted for her. Then did the same for Marie Therese Walter, and engraved her portrait on fragments of bones and shells found on the beach. Both pieces could possibly have eventually been worn as necklaces or pendants.
Back in the fifties and sixties, Picasso commissioned François Hugo, grandson of French writer Victor Hugo, to create a series of plates and medallions in gold and silver based on his original models and designs. These objects are not posthumous inventions decorated with motifs taken from various works of Picasso. Each was selected individually, designed and approved by Picasso himself.
Alexander Calder was the first artist able to translate his sculptural style directly. He made 1800 different pieces that were inspired by African sculptures and the avant-garde art when he lived in Paris in the '20s. He was certainly the first artist who became successful from making jewelry based on modern sculpture. To some, he gave the shape with their initials of his friends such as spiral silver initials OK, a gift given to Georgia O'Keefe who used it regularly to hold up the kimono dresses that became her uniform. Calder also designed moving pieces that were activated by the movements of the wearer. His creations made jewelry created by sculptors, which looked like three-dimensional miniatures of their works fashionable. Regarding the promotion of jewelry artists it is essential to cite Gian Carlo Montebello who devoted many years of his life, with his wife Teresa Pomodoro, to this endeavor. In 1967, pieces were made in several large series at a reasonable price but the experience was not immediately positive, the artists weren’t ready for mass production and therefore, GEM Montebello, (this is the name that he gave his company), decided to produce limited editions, with each piece signed and numbered. Following this moment, the artists who were involved in the project: the Italians Lucio Fontana and Piero Dorazio, the Belgian Pol Bury, the Venezuelan Jesus Rafael Soto, French artists César, Arman, Sonia Delaunay, subsequently, Matta and Meret Oppenheim. The exhibition includes work of all of them.
In Paris, in 1969, Montebello met Man Ray. And based on a design from the artist, there emerged the first of a long series, the collection "Pendentif pendant" (dangling earring). He then made several series of objects, limited collections, such as the famous mask "Optic Topic".

GOLD AND JEWELRY
Precious is the word for this metal considered noble by its beauty, scarcity and indestructibility.
It has a fascinating history because, apart from its technological applications, such as in electronics, telecommunications, microchips, medicine and nanotechnology, or its integration into other objects such as sculptures, buildings, dishware, adorning them with an aesthetic and stylish quality, the main use of gold is industrial jewelry and art jewelry or unique pieces because, despite being an age-old metal, it is flexible enough for the production of these objects.
Its resistance to the passage of time gives strictly the "value", unlike a "price" that depends on economic situations, it remains always, if it is also subject to a minimum of care it will keep its beauty and color for the generations to come that inherit such a piece.
Precisely, its peculiar characteristics, have given gold a central role in history and human development and, therefore, it has been valued and desired since ancient times for making statues, icons and to adorn bodies.
We have been able to admire jewelry with intricate sculptures in Sumerian and Egyptian royal tombs. Gold jewelry has existed for more than 6,000 years. Since humans discovered gold, it has been processed to make it into jewelry and worn as a symbol of status or power or more recently, offered as a public statement (gold medals, golden cups) or, differently, presented in an intimate celebration of love.
Significant buildings, temples and religious statues were covered with thin sheets of gold. As a result of its importance, it has always been considered a symbol of wealth and power of its owner.
Within gold jewelry there is a precious item that transcends time, gold is the material that gives intrinsic value to the piece if industrial or, conversely, the form will be more valuable if it is a work of art, singularl, a unique piece but such a form can only be indestructible in this metal, so that can be treasured for centuries to come.
Among its many qualities, gold has an exceptional intimacy, immutable and perpetual, personal and protective gold is the perfect expression of the individual creative intentions that allow the wearer of such a piece to also share the spirit of the artist who created it.
Gold is the most used metal in jewelry, it has been present in almost all periods of history. The word "gold" comes from the Latin word aurum, meaning shining light, perhaps because of it has been associated with the sun.
This metal is attributed healing and magical powers, plus "its value as a sign of ostentation and power has been coveted for centuries by the majority of peoples and cultures" (Codina)
For some peoples, gold has been a symbol of light, fire, life, power and wisdom, it has been linked with everything extraordinary and wonderful: "gold, considered the most precious of all metals, is a symbol of everything that holds utmost value or that which is the most difficult to achieve "(Bruce - Mitford, 1997, p. 39).
In the world of alchemy gold is positively conceived as the most pure and noble metal; it is associated with eternity and perfection, so unchanging and unchangeable, also it was used to ward off evil curses.
Since Christianity, gold is linked with God and all that is sacred, furthermore it represents the soul and divine intelligence; This is why both in rites and sacred temples objects of this material were used: "in Orthodox Christianity gold is a symbol of heavenly light and perfection, which is referenced in the golden background of the Medieval paintings done on wood and the icons of the Eastern church. "(Biedermann, 1993, p. 337)
Gold as an adornment came as a result of civilizations that have prized it as the noblest metal; in the beginning, as a symbol of power and energy; today it is an accessory of great intrinsic value that provides light when gold is in direct contact with a woman’s skin and is a symbol of discrete elegance with which they decorate men's fashion with cufflinks or tie pins becoming increasingly innovative.
Gold is the least reactive of all metals. It is called a "noble" (an alchemist term) metal because it does not oxidize under ordinary conditions, meaning it will never rust nor never tarnish.
THE GOLDEN AGE, 1944-1972, THE GOLDEN STANDARD
Historically, the force of the gold standard dominated during the nineteenth century as the basis of the international financial system. It ended after World War I, as belligerent governments needed to print large amounts of money in order to fund the war effort although without the ability to back such money in precious metal.
The gold standard is a monetary system that sets the value of a currency in terms of a certain amount of gold. The issuer of the currency guarantees that you can give the holder of the notes the amount of gold appropriated to them. An alternative is the bimetallic standard, in which one part of the currency is backed by gold and another by silver.
After World War I, this was replaced by the gold exchange standard. The gold standard was reintroduced in 1944, at the Bretton Woods Conference, in which the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank emerged. The currencies that guaranteed the change to gold were the dollar and sterling. This system resulted in a relative and lasting stability, from 1944 to 1971. Most economies in the world expanded in that period, so this stage is known historically as the "Golden Age".
Many goods have been used as money but the most esteemed was gold, used since the dawn of history for its qualities as durable divisible, homogeneous and difficult to counterfeit made gold the currency of choice of almost every culture on the planet.
Bills emerged as signed promises to deliver to its carrier the amount of gold that they indicated. Banks issued these tickets carefully to maintain a balance between the money that had been issued and the held gold reserves in their vaults, since, otherwise, they would lose the trust of their customers.
The gold standard was an international monetary system that could not function without the cooperation of the countries that adopted it. While it worked it prevented nations from implementing isolationist policies that would reduce international trade and which tend to produce a rigorous stagnation. After its collapse, discriminatory nationalist policies quickly emerged, particularly recurring devaluations and a strong protectionism, which restricted multilateral trade and deepened the crisis of the thirties. Since the end of World War II they had tried to restore monetary policy coordination between various countries as well as international trade freedom by creating bodies like the IMF and GATT.
PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF GOLD
The chemical symbol for gold, Au, comes from the Latin word for gold, "aurum". In the periodic table of elements, gold is classified as a transient metal with the following characteristics:
- Symbol, Au
- Atomic number, 79
- Atomic Mass, 196.96655 amu
- Number of protons / electrons, 79
- Number of neutrons, 118
- Melting point, 1064.43 ° C (1337.58 ° K, 1947.97 ° F)
- Boiling Point, 2807.0 ° C (3,80.15 ° K, 5084.6 ° F)
- Density 293 K, 19.32 grams per cubic centimeter
- Crystal structure, cubic
Gold can be alloyed with other metals to give it special characteristics. In its pure form, gold has a metallic luster and its color is the yellow of the sun, but when mixed or alloyed with other metals it creates color hues ranging from silver-white to green and orange-red.
These colour variation treatments of gold are mostly used in jewelry.
Fineness is a metallurgical term indicating the purity of gold and is expressed in parts per 1,000. Coins and gold bars have a fineness of 999.9 parts per 1,000.
The purity of gold in an item or the amount of gold in an alloy is measured by a unit called a carat. A fine or pure gold item has 24 carats, and in an item with fewer carats the content of fine golden is indicated as a fraction out of 24. For example, an article in the 18K gold contains 18/24 ( or 3/4) fine gold and 6/24 (or 1/4) alloy by weight.
The physical characteristics of gold of high electric conductivity and its inertia as a chemical substance make it an excellent and reliable conductor, particularly in harsh environments where temperatures can range from -55 °C to 200 °C. The use of gold in circuit wiring ensures the reliability of equipment operation, particularly in the vital activation mechanisms of airbags in motor vehicles or the deployment of satellites or spacecrafts.
There is no other metal as ductile or as malleable as gold. A single ounce of the metal can be stretched into a wire five miles long. Gold can be hammered into sheets so thin that light can pass through them.
High purity gold reflects infrared energy (heat) almost completely, making it ideal for heat reflection and radiation. The gold plating on the astronaut’s clothing protected their eyes from the searing sunlight in the Apollo 11.
Gold is also an excellent conductor of thermal energy. It is used in many electronic processes to dissipate heat away from delicate instruments. For example, the main pump in a space shuttle engine uses a gold alloy of 35%.

PLATINUM
Although its nuggets had been placed in rings before 1920, most platinum jewelry came after this date. In order to produce a few grams of platinum, at least three tons of ore containing it must be extracted, this rarity gives platinum a certain importance. Platinum is hypoallergenic, it does not lose its luster, which is why it is among the finest, purest and rarest precious metals.
Many of the most famous diamonds in the world were set in platinum, and it was also used in exclusive creations from Carl Fabergé, the famous Russian jeweler, or Louis Cartier, from Paris, and other major jewelers all over the world.
Platinum history is much older than you might think. Meteorites contain platinum and the first known meteorite crashed into Earth 2 billion years ago.
MOMENTS OF ITS HISTORY AND USE
Egyptian burial
1200 B.C. - Egyptians imported gold, containing traces of platinum, from the ancient kingdom of Nubia. They made jewelry and ornaments with a mixture of metal. In any case, it is not known whether the use of platinum was intentional.
700. B. C. - The daughter of the King of Thebes, the very pious Shepenupet, was buried in a magnificent sarcophagus decorated with gold and platinum hieroglyphics. also placed in the tumb was a small paper in a platinum case.
Pre-Incan ornaments
100. B. C. - Ancient South American civilizations, which existed before the Incas, used platinum and gold to create nose rings and other items of ceremonial jewelry. Columbian gold masks have platinum eyes suspended with delicate wires. Later, for more than two centuries, platinum wasn’t used by mankind, being forgotten for thousands of years, with only a brief comeback when Europeans discovered the New World.
Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain
A Few Puzzled Conquerors
1590 - Platinum is next found by the Spanish Conquistadores, who gave the arbitrary name "platina", meaning "little silver". Thirsty for gold, and indifferent to the look of platinum, the Spaniards regarded it as an inferior metal and threw into the rivers of Ecuador to "mature". Again, platinum disappeared from history. Spanish navy officer Antonio de Ulloa y Garcia de la Torre was one of the Conquistadores who understood the value of platinum.
Alchemy
1700 - In the eighteenth century, platinum began to enter Europe and soon became the most valued component of the alchemy craze. Because of its chemical qualities, platinum was a highly sought after ingredient for potions and mixtures for intrepid inventors trying to turn lead into gold.
The metal of kings
1751 - When Swedish scientist Theophil Scheffer cataloged platinum as a precious metal, it was only a matter of time until it came into the favor of royalty. In 1780, King Louis XVI of France declared that it was the only metal worthy of kings and his jeweler Marc Etienne Janety created many pieces of platinum for him.
The metric system
1795 - France was the first country to adopt the metric system for weights and measures. King Louis XVI called on, once again, Marc Etienne Janety, this time to determine the standard weight of gold drawn from platinum. Platinum is the undisputed material because its hardness guarantees that it will not wear out and nor lose its standard value. The original platinum cylinder is kept at the International Office of Weights and Measurements in Paris.
Main Findings
In the XIX century several important discoveries saw the growth of platinum in the field of science. In 1803 the British scientist Wh. Wallaston discovered a process for making platinum malleable, facilitating its commercial use. In 1819 in the Urals (Russia) deposits of platinum were discovered, and diamonds in 1866 Kimberley (South Africa) as a result increasing the popularity of platinum as a better link for precious stones.
In 1924 the German geologist Hans Merensky discovered the world's largest platinum deposit near Johannesburg (South Africa). The modern platinum industry had been born.
The Fabergé’s Famous Easter Eggs
1884 - Peter Carl Faberge, jeweler to the Russian Tsars, offered to create a jewelry egg for Alexander III to gave to his wife Mary. Thus began the annual Easter tradition and Fabergé eggs became legendary masterpieces, adorned with precious stones and platinum. Each egg hides a closely guarded secret and always has a surprise inside, the perfectly working gold and platinum train, referring to the completion of the Trans-Siberian is famous. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, the collection was lost and many Faberge Easter eggs are then sold in European countries.
A splendid platinum hall
In recent years of the XIX century, platinum fashion spread across Europe and Russia. Kings, Queens, Tsars and Maharajas were adorned with platinum or even used platinum thread for their clothing. Carlos IV of Spain ordered the creation of a "Platinum Hall" for the Real Sitio de Aranjuez. Reflecting the grandeur and splendor of the era, the room is lined with solid wood and inlaid with platinum.
Louis Cartier
In early 1900, Louis Cartier was the first to successfully create platinum jewelry, revealing for the first time the secret characteristic of the metal. Cartier used platinum in his "Garland Style" creations and to highlight the brilliance of diamonds. His ability to work platinum knows no rival and was defined by King Edward VII of England, as "the jeweler of kings and the king of jewelers". Maharajas, like the Maharaja of Patiala, also spread Cartier creations using them to adorn their turbans.
World War II
1939-1945 - As war breaks out in 1939, in the United States platinum is declared a strategic metal and is used to make weapons. Its use in jewelry is prohibited. After the war, however, the popularity of platinum surfaces once again, at the same time as the rediscovery of the enjoyment of jewelry. In 1947, in the exhibition "White Heat" New York, a large number of precious platinum jewelry and diamonds confirmed platinum as once again popular.

SILVER
THE ORIGINS OF ITS NAME
The symbol Ag is the abbreviation of the Latin word argentum, in turn derived from the Greek Argyros, the name given by Ancient Romans to silver and which, at present, still continues to be used in three Latin languages: French, Italian and Romanian. However, in Spanish and Portuguese and therefore, in the Iberoamerican world, we call this mineral plata and prata, deriving its name from a Latin qualifying adjective platus, in Greek platium, whose exact translation means sheet and literally: "white sheet" which was the form used to transport the mineral.
By simply remembering Tartesos, the splendid Tarshish from the Bible, we can understand the splendor of his extraordinary works of jewelry, from the VII century to V B.C., but we do not know how silver was named.
SILVER IN PEOPLE AND CUSTOMS
We know that the first coins that were minted in the Ancient World were in Lydia, now Turkey, at the end of the late seventh century. B.C., very few coins have survived to this day, but some can be seen in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
In Antiquity, when it came to magic and alchemy, silver had a major role. It was called Moon and also Diana. It was graphically represented in its four growing facets. Assyrian magicians (V century B.C.) attributed spectacular powers of virility. Moreover, in ancient Egypt it was common practice for women to taste oxidized silver sheets in order to help conceive sons. These sheets were always given by a priest of the goddess Isis, together with the recitation of a few prayers.
Greek men used their mouth as a purse for silver and gold coins. The most stable and "serious" coin of antiquity, was the Athenian drachma. It contained about 65-67 grams of fine silver and served as fiduciary currency for several centuries throughout the Mediterranean. In ancient Greece there weren’t any mines, extraction was superficial and not in large quantities therefore it was an invaluable asset.

Dolphin Treasure, Dragon in rock crystal with gold and silver. El Prado
With the unification of the Greek states from the conquests of Philip of Macedon and his son Alexander the Great, a mine extraction system appeared, mines that Macedonians had been exploiting in their territories for quite some time.
Greek historian Diodorus (I BC) tells that the Pyrenees mountains, the mountain range that separates Spain from France, were covered by dense forests which, due to careless shepherds, had been burned with such vehemence that the intense heat melted minerals, causing silver to run down the slopes like rivers of water. This great fire, Pyras in Greek, or ignis pira (everything burns) in Latin, is where the name Pyrenees comes from.
According to Diodorus, the natives (it is not very clear who they were) traded silver with Phoenician merchants for trivial merchandise, in such quantities as to carry them on their ships, the Phoenicians replaced their lead anchors with silver ones. This voyage was recorded and masterfully narrated by the great Mexican polygraph Alfonso Reyes.
The truth is that huge quantities silver existed and were removed from the Iberian Peninsula. The great Roman historian Pliny tells us that, while there was silver in all the Roman provinces, the best silver was from Spain and the Southern mines were classified as excellent. But an Ancient World historian, when working with numbers and amounts of those times, one always has to consider that the proportions are not the same.
SILVER IN THE MONETARY SYSTEM
The first coins minted in Spain appear in the third century B.C. Although they were made of gold, most of them, which circulated for economic transactions, were silver. Since different peoples inhabited the mainland, the issuing of coins varied: Greek drachma, the Phoenician, or simply silver rings were used as coins since their weight alone justified their value in any business transaction.
But later, the Western world became engulfed in desertion which led to barter and the disappearance of the monetary system based on silver.
With the economic development of the eleventh century, throughout Europe the system reappeared as well as the minting of the coin. Peninsular Christian kings wanted to emulate the Taifa kingdoms and like the Arabs, the gold was to be their most valuable coin followed by silver.
Ag: A CHEMICAL ELEMENT
Chemical element, symbol Ag, atomic number 47 and atomic mass 107,870. It is a lustrous grayish-white metal. From the chemical point of view, it is one of the heaviest and most precious metals; from the commercial point of view, it is a precious metal. There are 25 isotopes of silver. Their atomic masses ranging from 102 to 117.
For most purposes, silver is alloyed with one or more metals. Silver has the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of all metals, it is a fairly rare property. Sometimes it is found in nature as a freestanding element (native silver) or mixed with other metals. However, most often it found in ores containing silver compounds. The main minerals of silver are argentite, cerargyrite or silvertine and various minerals in which silver sulphide is combined with other metal sulphides.
Pure silver is a moderately soft metal (2.5-3 on the Mohs hardness scale), white, a little harder than gold. When polished it acquires a bright luster and reflects 95% of the light that strikes it. Its density is 10.5 times that of water. Its quality, its purity, is expressed as parts of pure silver per 1000 parts of total metal.
SILVER AND MEDICINE
But silver also has an important role in the field of medicine. Under its colloidal preparation, until the discovery of antibiotics, it was in charge of this role in infectious diseases. It was used and still often is, for its restorative properties, healing effect, in dermatology and so much more.
The Spanish Santiago Ramon y Cajal, Nobel Prize for Medicine, reached such high distinction for his work with silver salts used to adhere the dendrites and axons of neurons when he discovered that the nervous system was a series of connected crosshairs. He also discovered the uses of colloidal silver for radiography and, above all, we should not forget its thousand uses in the industry, that is to say, in our daily lives.

GOLDSMITHING AND SILVERSMITHS
Goldsmithing is the art of tilling rich metals, gold and silver. The Spanish word for it comes from the Latin Auri faber, maker of gold, the word goldsmith has displaced silversmith, formerly more used and seen in streets and squares where silversmithing shops and workshops have for centuries displayed their work, perhaps because it was understood that silversmiths only work silver, while goldsmiths understand how to work in both metals. Both, however, are regarded as synonymous, and although there are several names in Spanish aside from goldsmith, to put a name to gold architects as goldsmith, oribe or orive, orespe, orebce (all derived from Latin. aurifex, icis), preferred to call themselves silversmiths, goldsmiths distinguishing between gold silversmiths and silver silversmiths depending with what they worked and were the subject of the art of one metal or the other. In modern times they have added platinum to their artistic repertoire.
Known before bronze, silver, however, was less widespread in historic times than gold. Therefore, goldsmithing is one of the oldest arts developed by mankind, predating toreutics or bronze art, and of course, forging or iron craft, born with the second Age of Metal in the last centuries of the second millennium BC.
Silver, being the most abundant, was not used as often as gold, surely due to often being in a less pure state which required more difficult work to melt and refine it.
SILVER AS A METAL ORNAMENT AND DECORATION: THE SILVER AND ITS STYLES.
As for the origins of goldsmithing, its beginning is associated with the development of the first civilizations whose remains include decorative elements made from precious metals. In the Middle East, the first works of goldsmithing appeared in the fourth millennium B.C. Works of the Egyptians quickly reveal the grand mastery of this technique that they had.
European goldsmithing appeared in the third millennium B.C. first using gold and later silver as base materials extending into the second century B.C., across the Atlantic seaboard there was use of many pieces of this hammered metal. At this time decorations were made by using thin and light carving flint tools. Sometimes they appeared in embossed small borders with bunches of bone or copper. These techniques work will be maintained in their essence until our time
Throughout the Middle Ages goldsmithing produced articles for Christian worship and for the use of the wealthier classes, from chalices and crosses to magnificent altarpieces built in gold and silver for cathedrals. The Middle Ages was the era of faith. For centuries, the Church contracted artists and craftsmen almost exclusively. Only a few kings and lords, like Charlemagne, sponsored the construction of large buildings or artworks. During the Gothic age, such initiatives also corresponded to corporations such as councils and guilds.
From the eleventh century in Europe there was a kind of rebirth of all human activities, after the terrors of the year 1000. Artisans benefited greatly in this regard, and created professional corporations, unions, responsible for directing and regulating the activities of artisans.
Goldsmithing is as old as mankind, and in the Middle Ages it had great importance. Monasteries and churches commissioned many works. Byzantine goldsmithing was sumptuous and more than delicate.
In the Romantic age, large quantities of crucifixes, reliquaries, caskets, chalices. reliquary busts or statues in silver or silver gilt were made. Gothic goldsmithing has two sides, equally important considering the brilliance of the results: the religious and the secular.
Goldsmiths developed them equally but there remain more instances of the first than the second. Medieval society appreciated luxury items and commissioned them to embellish churches, their homes and even personal adornment.
The themes of Gothic architecture passed to goldsmithing: very complex works crowned with pinnacles, watermarks ... both in Spain and France, Germany, England and Italy, where the workshops of Siena stood out in Venice and Florence. In this era, crosses and monstrances stand out. The most common material was gilded silver, embellished with translucent glazes applications from the early fourteenth century. During the Gothic age objects for liturgical uses were concentrated, even as new items were introduced. The foot of the chalices, crosses, reliquaries, etc. abandons its circular shape to take pedicle; the arms of the crosses are complicated and their ends are in the form of a fleur de lis. In regard to the shrines, the use of the speakers is generalized.
Artifacts from Paris had to be numerous due to the fact that in thirteenth century was considered to be very precise in its regulations. This period was also splendid for Spanish goldsmithing
Arabs printed special character on their works, showing the great skill of their artisans in the work of casting, forging, carving, embossing and delicate watermarking.
From Renaissance era goldsmithing, we can say that it was so important that many of the great Italian artists of that era, as well as sculptors, painters and architects, were outstanding goldsmiths. Such are the cases of Ghiberti, Donatello, Filippo Brunelleschi, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Andrea Verrocchio, and, of course, Benvenuto Cellini, whose notable pieces are preserved in various European countries.
The colorful and pictorial taste displayed by Baroque metalwork, in both Europe and Latin America, a sumptuous and dazzling abundance, was not always governed by good taste. The abundance of parts and trends impides any synthesis. Both the France of Louis XIV as well as Italy, Germany and England retained, despite heavy losses, a substantial repertoire of silverworking pieces. In Spain, despite the destruction and looting from many wars, there is a varied sample from the Herreran austerity on silversmithing from the time of the Phillip Kings, or still keeping with the Mannerist designs released by Juan de Arfe, to the Rococo beauties of Cordoba Damian Castro in the late eighteenth century. Processional custodies and manuals are enriched with precious stones. The appreciation for images, thrones, Browbands altar, large tabernacles such as those from Tenerife in the Canary Islands, covered with sheets of embossed silver, are still amazing in their abundance. The old technique of Moorish watermarking in Córdoba, Salamanca and Astorga is revived. In civil silversmithing embossing reaches extreme prominence and becomes remarkably baroque, which in Spanish America, Mexico, Peru and Bolivia in particular, has repeated instances and even more declamatory reiterations.
With the advent of neoclassicism, and efforts of enlightened despotism, silversmithing adapts to the requirements of academia. A step forward is taken with industrialized mechanical advances. These are the times of Martinez Silversmithing, the Madrid school sponsored by Carlos III that spread its cool and correct style. Although refined in their allusions to Greeks and Egyptians, the works coming from the First Empire in France are found repetitive.
Throughout the XIX century, the eclectic styles suffocate craft production, which increasingly falls prey to certain industrializations of technical developments in electroplating and electrochemical processes. Only some parts of stylistic novelty appear when architects, like Gaudi, provide modernist designs to silversmiths and blacksmiths. This is what Miguel Fisac has also done more recently to accommodate forms of the sacred into functionalist concepts for their new temples, or what Dali presents in his fascinating pseudo-surrealist jewelry.

PRECIOUS STONES
PRECIOUS STONES
Precious stones have been linked with different beliefs and myths: the best known is the relationship of the stones with the zodiacal signs and with a series of powers; This turned them into amulets. They are believed to mobilize energy, which can be positive or negative, therefore, they have been given different connotations, many of them related primarily to their color.
These powers are popularly invented. It is believed that the stones have healing effects, both physically and emotionally, therefore, some trends such as New Age promote therapy with stones and crystals, and recommend that each person bring a gem that will function to protect and divert the "bad external energy", and also encourage internal balancing. Thus, the roots of gemstones in the collective imagination over time is evident.
The traditional meaning assigned to some precious and semiprecious stones, meaning by gemstones diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds and by semiprecious all others.
DIAMONDS
The diamond is considered to be the king of precious stones because it combines many of jewelry’s most valued qualities: transparency, high quality light refraction, brightness and hardness.
Etymologically it derives its name from the Sanskrit dyu, bright being, and from the Greek adamas, unconquerable. (Cirlot, 1997, p. 173)
This stone is one of the most popular at present, it is used in the manufacturing of the most expensive pieces like the crown jewels of different monarchies and engagement rings from the most famous jewelry houses. That is why it is considered synonymous with power, wealth and high social status.
Traditionally, diamonds were valued for their physical qualities: its hardness a symbol of incorruptibility, inviolability, immortality and strength of character; and its translucent and transparent form was associated with sincerity, purity and perfection. (Bruce - Mitford, 1997)
In some ancient cultures it was granted powers and included in popular rites related to magic: "The European popular imagination ascribed various properties, such as the ability to cure diseases, make people invisible, neutralize the effect of poisons, encourage acceptance of a man by a woman and drive away anything from animals to witches and ghosts."(Tello, 2008, p. 71)
RUBIES
Rubies are mainly composed of corundum just like sapphire; it is a stone mainly characterized by its hardness, its brightness and its wonderful deep red color.
Since ancient times, it has been attributed powers relating to welfare, "it was thought that the wearer of a ruby was blessed with health, wealth and success at an emotional level, even receiving invulnerability." (The King of the stones, 2008) p. 42
The symbolic significance of this stone changes with the culture. In Burma this stone was embedded in the teeth and skin of people. It was believed that in this way the stone happened to be part of the body conferring invulnerability: it was almost impossible that the person could be wounded by any weapon. (Bruce - Mitford, 1997)
For alchemists it was also of great importance because as Albertus Magnus (1193-1280) told in one of his analysis of this practice, this stone has the virtues of all other stones and has the power to melt away poison in the form of air and moisture. (Biedermann, 1993)
In general, rubies are associated with: love, passion, affection, virility, strength, joy, vitality, power and self-esteem.
Mary of Austria and La Peregrina (Pearl)
SAPPHIRES
The name sapphire is used for all corundum that are not red, although historically it was only used for blue corundum.
This stone has been used since ancient times by different civilizations under different meanings: the Persians, for example, believed that the earth was on a large sapphire whose reflection gave color to the sky and the Israelites granted a sacred value and believed that it possessed truth, because the commandments of God's law received by Moses were written on tablets of this material.
Sapphire was used as a talisman for travelers: this stone serve as a guide leading them safely to their destination.
The star-shaped sapphire is a powerful good luck charm. It is believed that the three axes of light represent faith, hope and destiny. (Bruce - Mitford, 1997, p. 40)
In Antiquity they believed that it held the power of wisdom and symbolized the truth, chastity, contemplation, hope, fate and love of truth. (Biedermann, 1993)
In present day, this stone is commonly used in engagement rings.
EMERALDS
Emerald is a green beryl used since the Persian civilization, where it was known by the Latin name smaragdus; currently the most recognized gems are drawn from Colombia and Brazil, although they are also produced in Russia and Zimbabwe.
Traditionally it was believed that the person wearing an emerald was favored with the understanding and skills". It is believed that these respected and powerful stones increase memory, sharpen the spirit and placed under the tongue, help predict the future" ( Bruce - Mitford, 1997, p 40).
These stones were also used in rites, magic and as antidotes and remedy for some diseases. For Christians they are a symbol of faith, purity and hope. (Biedermann, 1993)
These popular beliefs about emeralds caused their use within customs: "In the Middle Ages it was believed that it came from hell, so it was considered a talisman against evil forces and instrument to summon evil spirits and talk to them "(Tello, 2008, p. 79)
It also shares some of the connotations of the color green as a symbol of spring, rain, fertility, fertility and moisture.
PEARLS
The pearl is a symbol of feminine beauty and perfection, and is compared with all of the qualities of women like fertility, delicacy, fertility, purity and virginity. (Bruce - Mitford, 1997)
In jewelry it is used in different pieces: rings, pendants, earrings, pins, but the most signature piece is the white pearl necklace.
This stone is considered the queen of gemstones. For the Chinese it is synonymous with wisdom, immortality and light; in Ancient Greece it meant love, marriage and the life force or generating, and for Christians it symbolizes the baby Jesus, the perfect pearl.
As psychology and psychoanalysis shows, the pearl symbolizes the human soul, the intangible part and disembodied spirit: "psychoanalysis recognizes its role as symbolizing the mystical and subliminal" (Cirlot, 1997 p. 354)
It still has symbolic connotations, mainly related to femininity, but is also used as a symbol of justice, kindness and loyalty.
Aphrodite is portrayed in a seashell, referring to the birth of sea foam, as a result it is an allusion to pearls and the fruitful sea, both for its resemblance to the female sexual organ and because inside nest pearls (Tello , 2008, p. 56)
AMETHYSTS
Amethyst is a purple gem found in different shades: from pale lilac to deep purple. It belongs to the family of quartz and is one of the most common crystalline formations from the earth's crust, extracted from different regions of the world such as Brazil, Bolivia and Madagascar.
The word "amethyst" comes from the Greek word amethysios, meaning not drunk, "it was associated with Bacchus, the god of wine, and was believed to cure drunkenness. Therefore it became a symbol of sobriety. "(Bruce -Mitford, 1997, p. 40)
It has also been linked with humility, peace, piety, resignation and modesty; at certain times it was used in healing therapies for body and spirit and even today there are esoteric doctrines make use of them and recommend especially people born under the sign of Aquarius. (Tello, 2008)
TURQUOISE
Turquoise is a mineral used in its natural state in jewelry, it is highly valued for its distinctive blue-green color.
This stone was used in ancient Egypt, where it was attributed protective powers; and Mesoamerica where it was used to represent the gods and as an offering: "To the Aztecs, turquoise (Xihuitl) symbolized the union of celestial fire and earthly fire" (Biedermann, 1993, p 464.)
This stone is associated with value and aim, fertility, time and political power.
AQUAMARINE
It is characterized by its blue color, it is part of the beryl family. In ancient times it was related to marine mythological characters, such as Poseidon and sirens, and was later adopted by sailors as a charm: the stone was believed to condense the power of the sea, giving them courage and protecting them from the dangers of navigat.
Later alchemists ascribed it healing powers, believing that it improved digestive functions and prevented fluid retention; but these beliefs were dispelled in medieval times.
Even today it is conferred healing powers: it is believed that this stone calms its wearers, it gives happiness and allows them to interact more easily with others creating fluid dialogue and improving one’s capacity to express oneselves.
JADE
This stone is a joint creation of two minerals: jadeite and nephrite. It belongs to the family of silicates and is characterized by different shades of green ranging from almost white to pale green to dark green or brown; these colors are due to the higher or lower presence of chromium.
In China this stone is one of the most prized, it is a symbol of purity, immortality and eternal love; It is related to Yan, masculinity, dryness, water, the heart and vegetation.
In Chinese tradition jade is regarded as the cosmic force and vital energy; It is the most noble material, in its essence is immortality. This power has been granted by right, it belongs by nature. (Cirlot, 1997)
Because of these beliefs, this material has been used in the manufacturing of sacred objects, sculptures and amulets; usually several pieces of jade were placed in the tomb of the deceased with the idea of comforting his soul.
Chinese culture is also considered the compression of the essential virtues: the combination of purity, harmony, clarity, kindness and immutability. (Tello, 2008)
Moreover Mesoamerican cultures exploited this mineral using it in their sacred rites. For the Aztecs, jade represented some of the parts and qualities of their gods and was used in funeral burials, "this green mineral (Aztec chalchihutl) served to create stones symbolizing the heart and were placed in stone sarcophaguses with the ashes of the dead princes. "(Biedermann, 1993, p. 248)
AGATE
It is a semi-precious stone found in volcanic rocks;iIt belongs to the chalcedony family. This gem have been ascribed different meanings over time, for some ancient cultures this stone possessed magical powers: it was used to erotically stimulate women, to ward off bad weather, to control the course of rivers and help people breath more fluidly. It is characterized by its bands of different shades of the same color, these strips are crystalline formations and the color difference is due to its mixing with other minerals.
According to the analysis by Albertus Magnus of ancient texts and alchemy, agate "gives strength to the heart, and converts violence into kindness and gives joy and protects against adverse forces" (Biedermann, 1993, p. 19)
Another power that was ascribed to this stone was the ability to cure insomnia and ensure pleasant dreams, it was also traditionally associated with courage, boldness, prosperity, long life and spiritual love. (Bruce - Mitford, 1997)
CORAL
Coral is a sea stone formed from the skeletons of colonies of polyps, small animals which grow in a branched form to form reefs.
This material has been used since antiquity in the manufacture of decorative beads and charms; even today in Italy amulets are made against the "evil eye", little fists carved from red coral hanging from gold bracelets or children’s clothing. (Biedermann, 1993)
The coral has been used as a talisman, as a protective element against malignant forces and misfortunes. It has been considered by some peoples as a supernatural element due to the mutability of its appearance and its properties: in its original form sea coral is soft and porous, sensitive and weak, but when it comes into contact with the surface it turns into a hard and durable material, in an even brighter and more vivid red. (Ranisio 1998)
Other cultures thought it had magical properties: "It was believed that the coral stopped the flow of blood from a wound, cured madness, instilled the wearer with wisdom and protected against spells." (Bruce - Mitford, 1997 p. 38)
It was also believed that coral could cross an affluent river and control storms.
BLACK AMBER
It is a black carbon fossil that is part of the lignite family. It is characterized as being very fragile, which makes working in larger sizes difficult and therefore an art for experts.
In the nineteenth century black amber was used to make jewelry for mourning, it became a "symbol of love for the deceased" and the reflection of grief over the death of a loved one. (Bruce - Mitford, 1997) These gems were valued as part of the etiquette and decorum of the Victorian era, and despite its high cost of production, due to the fragility of the material, it was used by all mourners.
This material was also used in ancient cultures as a protection against the "evil eye", it is believed to protect the body and soul repelling poisons and diseases.
There are many other semi-precious stones used in jewelry, but in this article we have highlighted only some of them.

STONES AND GEMS IN THE TRADE
DIAMOND
A diamond is a natural mineral from crystallized carbon with a cubic structure.
The authenticity of the diamond must not be specifically mentioned because the use of the word "diamond", per se, is a guarantee of authenticity.
Using the word "diamond" to describe products that have been partly or fully crystallized or recrystallized by human interference is prohibited, regardless of the materials or methods. Products made by man can only be called "synthetic diamonds" when their physical structure and chemical properties correspond to their total weight to the diamond. The word "diamond" must be clearly preceded by the term "synthetic" or "artificial".
Fashion brands or names can not use words similar to "diamond" (eg. Diamantino, diamlita).
WEIGHT
The weight of the diamond is expressed in carats (international abbreviation ( "ct"), along with two decimals.
If the total weight of all diamonds contained in a piece is given, the weight must be clearly and unambiguously specified by the terms "total weight" or words of similar import.
COLOR
Color has different classifications according to the gemological organization designated by:
