Finchley railwayman David Barron was reunited today with his four runaway children. The youngsters, aged between four and 15, left home on Monday in an effort to persuade their mother and father to get together again. Mr Barron, 34, and his wife Joan, 37, had a row a week before Christmas and she left their home in Walton Street and has not been seen since.
The reunion came after Mr Barron had a telephone call from his daughter Bernadette, aged 13, last night. Mr Barron spoke to her for five minutes after waiting for the call at a telephone box near the family flat. Later he discovered that the four children –Bernadette, Christine, 14, Robert, 10, and four-year-old Susan– were staying with a friend of their mother’s. The ex-neighbour had phoned Mr Barron after he made a TV appeal for the children to return home. Mr Barron explained how he came home to find a note left on the mantelpiece, written by Bernadette. It read: ‘Me, Christine, and Robert have decided to stay with some friends to help you try and find Mummy. Please try not to worry, as I will phone home. Please try to have Mummy on the telephone to me.’
Early today Mr Barron went to collect the children to bring them home for a re-union breakfast. ‘I’m delighted the kids are safe and back home with me,’ Mr Barron said. ‘We’re all a little bit emotional at the moment.’
But Mrs Barron is still absent. ‘I just hope my wife will come back and then the family will be complete again,’ he added.

David Barron, un operario de ferrocarriles del barrio londinense de Finchley, se reunió hoy con sus cuatro hijos que se habían escapado de casa. Los niños, de edades de entre los cuatro y quince años, se escaparon de casa el pasado lunes para intentar convencer a sus padres que se reconciliasen. Barron, de 34 años, y su mujer Joan, de 37, tuvieron una discusión la semana antes de Navidad tras la cual Joan se fue de su casa, ubicada en la calle Walton y desde entonces no se la ha vuelto a ver.
El reencuentro ocurrió posteriormente a una conversación telefónica que Barron mantuvo con su hija de trece años, Bernadette, la noche anterior. Tras haber estado esperando la llamada, el padre habló con su hija por cinco minutos desde una cabina ubicada cerca del domicilio de la familia. Más tarde, se enteró de que sus cuatro hijos –Bernadette, Christine de catorce años, Robert de diez y la pequeña de cuatro años, Susan– estaban quedándose con una amistad de su madre que solía vivir en el barrio, quien le llamó por teléfono tras haberle visto en televisión suplicando a los niños que regresasen a casa. Barron comentó que había llegado a casa y encontrado una nota escrita por Bernadette sobre la repisa de la chimenea que decía: “Yo, Christine y Robert hemos decidido quedarnos con unos amigos para ayudarte a que encuentres a mamá. Por favor, intenta no preocuparte por nosotros ya que te llamaré a casa. Si puedes, ponme a mamá al teléfono”.
El padre ha ido a recoger a los niños y los ha llevado a casa, donde han desayunado todos juntos para celebrar el reencuentro. “Es una gran satisfacción para mí que los niños estén a salvo y de vuelta en casa”, comenta, añadiendo que por ahora todos están “un poco sensibles”. Joan sigue desaparecida, por lo que Barron comentó que sólo espera que su mujer “regrese a casa para que la familia vuelva a estar completa”.

Source text - English On the night of December 15-16, the gem-encrusted sword of Charles X was stolen from the Louvre’s Galerie d’Apollon. The three thieves took flight after attacking and wounding two guards. A week later, television producer Jacques Rouland, commissioned by the weekly picture magazine Paris-Match, took a stroll through the museum with a facsimile of the ceremonial sword. Photographs published later in Match implied that the imperturbable guards paid no attention whatsoever to the unusual sight and allowed Rouland to carry out his 'joke' to the end.
CGT trade-union representatives for the Louvre guards complained early this month about a "tactic which tends to put French museums worst-paid employees in the wrong by means of a cheap trick". They noted that Rouland was told to stay out of the museum when he emerged from his car in the parking lot. The day after the theft, the CGT representatives had already condemned inadequate staffing and training —a result of the lack of any official classification for trained watchmen. They stressed that sophisticated security measures are no substitutes for guards.

En la madrugada del 16 de diciembre, la espada del rey Carlos X –adornada con gemas incrustadas– fue robada de la Galería de Apolo en el museo del Louvre. Los tres ladrones se dieron a la fuga tras atacar y herir a dos guardias de seguridad. Una semana después, el presentador de programas televisivos Jacques Rouland (contratado por la revista fotográfica semanal Paris-Match) se paseó por todo el museo llevando consigo una reproducción de la espada ceremonial robada. Posteriormente, los fotógrafos de Match publicaron las fotografías de lo ocurrido afirmando que los imperturbables guardias ni se habían percatado de tal acto inusual, lo cual permitió a Rouland llevar a cabo su “broma” hasta el final.
Los representantes sindicales de la Confederación General del Trabajo de Francia (CGT) presentaron una queja a principios de este mes a favor de los guardias sobre las “prácticas que tienden a dejar en ridículo a los funcionarios peores pagados de los museos franceses mediante bromas pesadas”. También manifestaron que se habían dado órdenes a Rouland de permanecer fuera de las inmediaciones del museo, al momento en que el mismo salió del coche tras haberlo aparcado. El día posterior al robo, los representantes sindicales de la CGT ya habían denunciado la falta de formación y dotación de personal –resultado de una carencia de especializaciones oficiales para vigilantes cualificados–, resaltando que las medidas de seguridad sofisticadas no sustituyen el trabajo de un guardia de seguridad.
