Source text - English Why women need to add strength training to their workouts
“Strength”. “Muscles”. “Body Building”. Many Chinese women hear these terms and want to run far, far away. Quite a few of my good Chinese friends openly admit to not wanting to become strong or add muscle. This is perhaps due to two reasons. First of all, the traditional Chinese standard of beauty is for a woman to be slim and soft, and building muscles has no place in that. This also used to be what was considered beautiful in the Western world – at least according to our grandmothers. And the second reason is due to the misunderstanding of how weight training affects a woman’s body. Think exercising with weights it is going to turn you into a muscle bound masculine monster? Think again.
This old attitude isn’t doing anyone any favors. To be honest, it’s having a negative overall effect on women’s health. I’m glad to say, though, that more and more women are starting to understand that strength training most certainly does have a place in a modern woman’s workout routine. In fact, it can support women in achieving an ideal body and having a better, healthier, and longer life. Let’s take a closer look at the reasons why we need to rethink our old “muscles are bad” mentality.
First things first, when I talk about using weights and improving strength, I’m not talking about building big muscles. Many of us appreciate seeing a man with big muscles, and some of us also admire women with noticeable muscles, and strive to look like that ourselves (if you are one of these ladies, go for it!). But keep this in mind: women’s bodies are not like men’s bodies. Our hormones are different. Men have very high levels of “testosterone”, which is the main building block needed to grow big, bulky muscles through weight lifting. Woman’s lack of this hormone means our bodies respond in a different way to weight training. Instead of growing large muscles, our bodies become leaner and fitter. For women, what improving strength really comes down to is toning our muscles. The goal isn’t to add bulk, but rather to become more fit. Weight and resistance training helps us replace fat with lean muscle so that instead of fatty flab, we have smooth lines and a more graceful silhouette. It bears repeating: Lifting weights will not make your muscles bulky like a man’s! If want an example of how weight training affects a woman’s body, just look at the Victoria’s Secret models. They spend a lot of time exercising get those amazing bodies; bodies that simply would not be possible without weight training. This is the true effect of weight training for women. Improving our muscle tone also helps us lose weight. As we do strength moves, our body replaces our fat cells (which take up a lot of space) with muscle (which takes up much less space), making us appear smaller. Even better, muscle cells burn energy more quickly and efficiently than fat cells. This means that if your muscles are toned, even when you’re not doing anything, your body is helping you burn calories and fat at a faster rate. As your muscles are burning that fat, you’ll also feel more energized, and things you used to find tiring – walking up stairs, playing with your child, dancing with your friends – will seem easier and more fun.
More toned and conditioned muscles can make us look slimmer and feel better! That’s good news for the outside – now let’s look at what toning and conditioning can do for our insides.
The list of short- and long-term health benefits of exercise is impressive. We know that even taking small steps to get out there and move every day can do wonders for our minds and bodies. But adding muscle toning and conditioning to our exercise routine can supply additional benefits that non-weight-bearing exercises (such as jogging, dance, or yoga) don’t give us. For example, strength training has been shown to protect us against many chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Also, as you strengthen the muscles around your bones and joints, they suffer less stress and are less susceptible to damage; so toning protects us against smaller problems, like injuries and back pain.
The benefits I listed above become more and more important as we age. And possibly the most important benefit of strength training for women emerges here. As women grow older, our bones become more porous and brittle. This means they have more tiny holes in them and are prone to breakage. It also means women’s bodies may literally shrink down, thus becoming shorter, more fragile, more arthritic, and less able to perform. There is very little we can do to reverse this process, which actually starts when we are in our early 20’s. But, here’s the good news: scientific studies have shown that strength training actually improves bone density – it helps our bones fill in those tiny holes and become strong again. You can reverse the damage your bones have sustained, and even build stronger, healthier bones as you continue training.
As we can see, the old idea that muscles are just for men is not only outdated, it’s also wrong! The priorities women have for their health and bodies – to be slim, to have a toned shape, and to enjoy a long and healthy life – are completely supported and best achieved by using an exercise program that has weight training.
