—¿Eres tú?—me preguntó misteriosamente.
—Bien.
—¿Estás?
—No faltaré.
Translation - English My friend did not find what he was looking for, and regarding what I came to assume, he was looking for nothing at all, just like a good many others. Some mothers were actually looking for their daughters, and some husbands were looking for their wives, but neither a single daughter was looking for her daughter nor a single woman to her husband. Perhaps -they said- they might have fallen asleep amongst the confusion in any of the bedrooms... It is possible -I said to myself-but it is not likely.
A mask came to me in a dash.
—Is it you? — He asked me mysteriously.
—It´s me — I answered being sure that I was not lying.
—I recognized your domino; but tonight it is not possible; Paquita is over there; but his husband insisted on coming; we don´t know where the hell he has found tickets. What a shame! Such a great occasion! We have seen you, and not daring to talk to you herself, she has sent me to tell you that you two will certainly meet in “La Sartén” tomorrow... A fleshy domino and white ribbons...
—Fine.
—Will you be there?
—I shall not miss it.
—And what about your wife, guy? — said to a very rare entity all dressed in an abundance of little horns with a similar black domino by his side.
—She might be sleeping right now; even though I've tried, I couldn´t persuade her to come; there is no worse enemy of fun than her.
—So then you rest in her virtue; are you staying here all night?
—No, just until four.
—Great.
Once the man in little horns had left, and I could hear these words:
—He hasn´t suspected anything.
—How was it possible? I left an hour after he had left...
—He said at four, didn´t he?
—Yes.
—So, we have enough time. Are you sure about the maid?
—There is nothing to worry about, since...
So was it fate that the domino I was wearing that night was the same as that of every lover, happier than Quevedo, of course, who at night looked like those waiting to beat them?
A shred of thoughts broke the train of my curiosity; the other words were mixed up with repeated voices saying: Do you recognize me? I know you, and so on.
—¡Psst!Psst! I found you at last – said another slender mask to me while taking my arm, and with a tender and agitated voice as her expectation was satisfied. Have you been looking for me for long?
—Certainly not, since I wasn´t expecting to find you.
