Das Institut für Psychopharmakologie beschäftigt sich in erster Linie mit der Suchtforschung. Im Mittelpunkt unseres Interesses steht die tierexperimentelle und translationale Erforschung der Alkohol- und Drogensucht sowie die Comorbidität mit Angst- und Depressionserkrankungen. Fünf Arbeitsgruppen sind an dem Institut für Psychopharmakologie angegliedert: Verhaltenspharmakologie (Spanagel), Molekulare Pharmakologie (Sommer), Translationale Suchtforschung (Sommer, Kiefer), Physiologie (Köhr), und die Nachwuchsgruppe Entwicklungsneuropsychopharmakologie (Schneider).
Basierend auf präklinischen Befunden verfolgen wir 3 Ziele: (i). Die Entwicklung neuer Verhaltenstherapien und pharmakologische Interventionen bei Suchtpatienten (z.B. Pharmakologische Unterdrückung von Rekonsolidierung eines Drogengedächtnisses). (ii). Die neurobiologischen Langzeitfolgen von Drogenmissbrauch und Komatrinken bei Adoleszenten abzuklären. (iii) Die Entwicklung von präventiven Strategien.
Translation - English Description
The primary mission of the Institute for Psychopharmacology is addiction research. Our main interests are animal experimentation and translational research of alcohol- and drug addiction as well as comorbid anxiety and depressive illnesses. The Institute for Psych-pharmacology is subdivided into five working groups: Behavioral Pharmacology (Spanagel), Molecular Pharmacology (Sommer), Translational Addiction Research (Sommer, Kiefer), Phyisiology (Koehr), and the Junior Group for Developmental Neuropsychopharmacology (Schneider).
Based on preclinical findings we are targeting 3 goals: 1) The development of new behavioral therapies and pharmacologic interventions for addicted patients (eg, pharmacologic suppression of the reconsolidation of a drug memory). 2) To further clarify the neurobiological long-term consequences of drug abuse and binge drinking among adolescents. 3) The development of preventive strategies.

I spent 30 years in private practice treating patients in English, Russian, German, Swedish and occasionally Spanish. I have traveled extensively worldwide (22 times to Germany alone).
Due to my extensive experience treating complex trauma victims, I organized and was the interpreter for the first Soviet-American exchange on dissociative disorders in 1989.
