Classic and romantic are wide-ranging words. They can be applied as critical terms to the art of any epoch. We can say that Giorgione is a romantic painter or that Mondrian is a classic painter, and the words help to define the artist's character. At all times some artists have appealed to our emotions by analogies, buried memories or the sensuous use of colour 5 others have satisfied our need for order and permanence by creating structures or compositions that seem com¬plete in themselves. In European painting of the sixteenth and seven¬teenth centuries these two intentions existed happily beside each other. Such differences as occurred were chiefly technical - the dramatic shadows of Caravaggio or the fluid handling of Rubens. Often the words classic and romantic could be applied to the same painter. Poussin, as a young man, painted a number of deeply sensuous pictures that can be called romantic; his later work is the epitome of classicism. Some of Rembrandt's greatest works are based on classical construction; Raphael himself had a strong vein of romanticism, and as the following pages will show, classicism and romanticism in artists of the first rank always co-exist and overlap.
In the middle of the eighteenth century there appeared a division between classic and romantic art far deeper and more definite than anything which had preceded it; and this division was supported by two pieces of theoretical writing that appeared at almost exactly the same time.
In 1755 Winckelmann, the first man of outstanding gifts to occupy himself with the history of art, published a book called Reflections on the Imitation of Greek Art, which was to become the sacred text of classicism. And in the following year, Burke, the philosopher-statesman, published his Inquiry into the Origins of the Sublime, which described the aims and categorised the subject matter of romanticism. This divergence was not merely technical; it gave visible expression to a change in philosophy, which was later to manifest itself in all the arts.
The classicists believed, in Winckelmann's words, that 'art should aim at noble simplicity and calm grandeur'; the romantics said that art should excite the emotions, and in particular the emotion of fear, which was the source of the sublime. As it developed romanticism proposed a new set of human values. It became a rebellion against the static conformity of the eighteenth century; and in art this became a rebellion against generalised forms borrowed from Greco-Roman sculpture, and against the prohibition of colour and movement as expressions of vital force. Winckelmann had said, 'Beauty resembles the most limpid water drawn from a pure source, which is all the healthier for being tasteless'. Not unexpectedly, the art produced in conformity with this doctrine is almost entirely uninteresting to us. The artist who conformed most closely to Winckelmann's theories was a German painter resident in Rome named Raphael Mengs, and his masterpiece is the ceiling he painted for the most famous collector of his time, the Cardinal Albani [2] and although it is undoubtedly insipid, it is not at all pure. It is made up of the fashionable cliches of the time and is fundamentally frivolous. It does not reflect life, but some vapid dream of connoisseurs and collectors.
The man who revolted against this unreal style, Jacques-Louis David, was himself a classicist; but his classicism was nourished by a contact with nature and a passionate involvement with human life and society. In politics as well as in art he was a rebel of the old-fashioned kind. He was born in Paris in 1748, and was at first content to paint in the various styles then current, but in 1775, after heroic struggles, he won the diploma of the Paris Academy and was sent to Rome. When he arrived at the Villa Medici, Winckelmann's influence was at its height. The excavations of Pompeii and Hercu-laneum were not twenty years old. It was a moment almost as intoxicating as the first Renaissance, of which discoveries in our own time, such as that of early Chinese art or the art of primitive peoples, gives us only a pale reflection. David filled his mind with the history of Rome, his sketch-books with the outlines of ancient sculpture, and returned to Paris in 1780 determined to revive in painting the virtues of the ancients. Characteristically, one of his first pictures, the Count Potocki on Horseback [3], is still in the eighteenth-century style - one of the last great bravura pieces of the ancien regime. But in the same year, 1781, he attempted something more serious, and took Poussin as his model. His Belisarius Begging for Alms, in which the aged general is recognised by one of his old soldiers [4], might have been painted in the seventeenth century, even down to the noble landscape in the background. It is Davidien in its large gestures, and we find for the first time a feature which is almost like a trade-mark in David's best work, one which undoubtedly had for him an uncon¬scious symbolism, the open palm of the hand. The Belisarius was much admired, but David realised that it was not the kind of classicism which the age demanded, or which he was destined to paint. It was too traditional, too much a picture for the connoisseur. His classicism must be revolutionary, and must appeal to the people, and to those friends of the people, the philosophers. The result was The Oath of the Horatii [5].
The Horatii is one of those works on which it would be easy to write a short book. It is really what some art historians want works of art to be, a perfect illustration to social history. Although it was commissioned by Louis XVI, it illustrates the new moral earnestness, and the stoicism which preceded the French Revolution. 'You love art too well', wrote David to his pupil Gros, 'to occupy yourself with frivolous subjects. Vite, vite, mon ami, feuilletez votre PlutarqueS (Quick, quick my friend, turn the pages of your Plutarch.) This spirit is expressed no less by its subject than by the combination of realism and archaic rigour in the style; and it is the grave acceptance of fact which separates it from the vapid orthodox classicism of Mengs. In the frontal composition, in the concentrated action, in the elevated expressions and accurate accessories, it is perfectly classical- but David I lias been too much in earnest to suppress the truth in favour of ideal form. His open hand, quite consciously the central symbol of the design, gains its force from a particularisation which would have made Winckelmann shudder. He would also have been shocked by the Tuscan Doric pillars, which were considered outside the canon of classical elegance. David had chosen them consciously (for the first time, I believe) as symbols of uncorrupted Roman virtue, and primitive strength. The whole picture is, indeed, a perfectly conscious piece of propaganda, which was planned like a political campaign. The original idea, which does not occur in Corneille's drama, seems to have come from a slightly questionable source - from a ballet by Noverre, which in turn was inspired by the miming of David Garrick. The continual interplay between classic and romantic is further illus¬trated by the fact that the poses of the brothers seem to have been invented by Fuseli. Once the motive of the picture was decided upon David announced that it could be painted only in the sympa¬thetic atmosphere of Rome, and he set out thither with a retinue of
pupils and attendants. The execution took eleven months of systematic labour 5 the only part of it to give any trouble was the father's right foot, which he repainted twenty times, and to the end did not consider sufficiently ideal. In 1785 the Horatii was exhibited in David's studio in the Piazza del Popolo, and the crowds who visited it strewed in front of it a carpet of flowers. The painting was then taken back to Paris, where, in spite of official opposition, it created an effect of which those of us who remember the first appearance of Picasso's Guernica may be able to form some conception. Suddenly, through a work of art, men became conscious of moral responsibility.
The Oath of the Horatii remains a very impressive picture. The unified totalitarian gesture of the brothers, like the kinetic image of a rotating wheel, has an almost hypnotic quality. Whatever its origins -whether in Poussin or Fuseli — it retains the excitement of a personal discovery, and a similar use of repetition was to reappear in classical art from Flaxman to Seurat's Chahut. In the Horatii it is a convincing symbol of determined action, and is contrasted with the soft lines of the women on the right, sensuous, passive, incapable of heroic sacrifice. To realise how personal, and, as we say, original, a style David has created in the Horatii we have only to contrast it with Poussin's Rape of the Sabines [6] which is supposed to have inspired the figure of the leading brother. David's extraordinary powers of elimination and concentration are at once apparent; and I think they must owe something to the study, in Rome, of Caravaggio. That the arch-classicist should have drawn inspiration from the great anti-classic seems at first surprising, until we remember that David was above all a revolutionary, in revolt against the frivolity of mere picture-making. At his best Caravaggio's realism, where one may also find the open hand, was based on the same ambition and because of this earnestness the influence of Caravaggio was already accepted in French classicism, for who can doubt that the darkness and dramatic concentration of Poussin's Testament of Eudamidas [7] also derives from the Roman revolutionary or indeed that David had seen a copy of this extraordinary work (the original was inaccessible) which contains so many Davidien characteristics, from the parallel com¬position to the weeping woman on the right. The Horatii has another quality which is contrary to the strict theory of classic art; it is handled with a feeling for the quality of paint. This sense of jolie matiere was something which David retained from his unregenerate, pre-revolutionary days, an indulgence of which he was only half ashamed, for he habitually used it in his portraits, and did not always succeed in suppressing it in his histories. A recent cleaning has revealed in the figures of the women a good deal more charm of handling than was becoming in the Stoic style, and that is in complete contrast to the enamelled surfaces of Ingres.
The Horatii established David as one of the leaders of the national life. Thenceforward his pictures had the public importance of manifestos. It was a position to which unfortunately several artists since the time of Raphael had aspired, but none had achieved in anything like the same degree. David realised the dream which has proved fatal to so many painters of mediocre talent, and even those of real accomplishment such as Diego Rivera and Orozco — the dream that a painter can use his art to influence men's conduct. These were, of course, years when public opinion was particularly susceptible to the influence of art. The prophet of the movement, Jean-Jacques Rousseau himself, had been less of a philosopher than an artist. Doctrine was found in works which seem to us very harmless. We may think that The Marriage of Figaro was written solely to give us pleasure, but in 1785 it was considered a political bombshell, for from 1780 to 1790 every play and every ballet was interpreted in a political sense —a fact which is not surprising when we remember the recent fate of Shostakovitch, or re-read the third book of Plato's Republic. Only in England, perhaps, does this influence of the arts on the life of the State seem incredible and absurd.
The two great pictures which David painted in these years between the Horatii and the Revolution were both celebrations of stoicism and sacrifice. The first, The Death of Socrates [9], is the least Davidien of his major works 5 the history and ethos of Greece was less in harmony with his character than those of Rome. No doubt he chose the subject as an example of sacrifice, but the motives which led Socrates calmly to accept the hemlock were too complex and dis¬interested for a man whose mind moved in the realm of action. As a result the picture, though admirably composed, is curiously lacking in David's personality and, consequently, in style. The open palm of action has grown extremely small, and it has been given to the tiny figure of Xanthippe, who was originally seated at the foot of the bed, but whose place has been taken by Plato (who, in fact, was only twenty-five, and not present on that occasion). He is one of the very few motives in David's work drawn direct from life, and he is the most impressive figure in the whole composition. But the very lack of style in this picture made it a perfect example of classicism. Much to the alarm of English academicians it was proposed to send the Socrates to the Royal Academy of 1788, and a critic wrote that it was 'a picture which would do honour to Athens in the Age of Pericles, which after ten days successive observation seems to me absolutely perfect in all its parts'. These words appear in all the books on David as having been written by Sir Joshua Reynolds who is said to have seen the picture in the Salon of 1787; but they are not in Reynolds' style and as far as I know he never mentions David.
In his next picture [8] David returned to his Plutarch and to the world of the will. It represents the lictors bringing back to the house of Brutus the bodies of his two sons whom he had condemned to death; one of those incidents in Roman history which do not appeal to a humanitarian age but which, in 1789, seemed to be the summit of patriotic virtue. It was a subject calculated to inflame opinion because it dealt with traitors, those well-known creations of popular excite¬ment at times of crisis or revolution, and the picture's success as a piece of propaganda was immediate. Its continued success as a work of art is also, to my mind, considerable. The figures are, as usual, all taken from the antique - the Brutus direct from the statue in the Capitoline. Even the furniture was copied from the antique, and made by the great ebeniste Jacob. But the idea of putting the figure of Brutus in shadow in a corner of the composition seems to me a real stroke of imagination; and the group of mother and daughters, skilfully combining Niobe and a bacchante, is beautifully designed. It shows that David, contrary to what used to be supposed, was enough of a man of the eighteenth century to be deeply appreciative of femininity. This is obvious enough when one remembers his portraits, but feminine figures also play an essential part in his compositions. His pictures with, if I may so express it, an exclusively male cast, the Socrates and the Leonidas, are painted with considerably less warmth and personal interest. The reason is that in his greatest paintings the real heart of the drama lies in the conflict between the masculine and the feminine spirit. We are moved precisely because this was a conflict within David himself. It is true that David was, as his contemporaries said, 'the painter of the will'; and in the Horatii and the Brutus the will enjoins the sacrifice of sentiment to duty: but only after a struggle with the painter of Madame Récamier [10]. In the work which David himself believed to be his masterpiece the feminine actually triumphs.
The Brutus was exhibited in 1789, and during the next four the movement, in which David's picture had played its part, reached a crisis and completely swamped all those who were connected with it. The artist who succeeds in influencing events leaves the free world of contemplation for the limited world of action; and very soon he finds that he must give up art for politics. David swore the Oath of the Tennis Court, became a member of the Convention, and voted for the death of the King. Much of his time was spent in organising fetes and processions (in which his lack of invention was painfully evident), in designing uniforms and in his administrative problems connected with the Academy. I ought to add that he fulfilled these last functions with remarkable fairness and restraint - not a single artist was guillotined, and he nominated for public honour painters of such unrevolutionary character as the aged Fragonard and Madame Vigée Lebrun. He also found time to begin a vast picture of the Oath of the Tennis Court; which was cut up, so that we can deduce it only from the preliminary drawings. He also produced one masterpiece; his memorial to Marat.
The Marat Assassiné [11] is, to my mind, the greatest political picture ever painted. It is almost the only justification of the popular belief that an event which has aroused public emotion may imme¬diately become the subject of a work of art. Pictorally this was a triumph for the classic discipline. David, who was in the habit of pondering every detail, had to paint with great speed, yet the whole design has an air of concentration and finality which is usually the result of prolonged elimination. David's classical training also enabled him to strike a perfect bargain with the deal'. The figure, no less than the wooden box and the trompe l´oil papers, gives the impression of absolute truth, even though we know that Marat's face and body were ravaged by disease which David dared not represent.
The Death of Marat has a special interest for us today. It proves that totalitarian art must be a form of classicism: the State which is founded on order and subordination demands an art with a similar basis. Romantic painting, however popular, expresses the revolt of the individual. The State also requires an art of reason by which appro¬priate works may be produced as required. Inspiration is outside State control. The classic attitude towards subject matter - that it should be clear and unequivocal - supports the attitude of unques¬tioning belief. Add the fact that totalitarian art must be real enough to please the ignorant, ideal enough to commemorate a national hero, and well enough designed to present a memorable image, and one sees how perfectly The Death of Marat fills the bill. That it happens also to be a great work of art makes it dangerously misleading.
A few months after completing this picture David's political career was over, and on the 13th of Thermidor he was imprisoned and in danger of his life. His first prison had a pleasant view over the Luxembourg Gardens, which he recorded with a freedom and naturalism that shows he was a born painter. His second prison was less agreeable and rival painters erected a guillotine outside his window. He also painted a self-portrait [1] signed 'David in Vinculis'.
No imprisonment, no threat of the guillotine even, would have distressed David so greatly as the modern view that he is chiefly memorable for his portraits. He was, indeed, an admirable portrait painter, whose work in this field anyone can enjoy. Two of the most charming examples are the blithe Sériziats [12—13], painted imme¬diately after his release, who seem to reflect David's first sense of well-being at liberation from prison and from politics. They are certainly pleasanter to look at than the implacable Brutus; and Madame Seriziat's white dress and bunch of flowers is a foretaste of the 'primitivism' of Ingres (also very like early Caravaggio). But to maintain, as Monsieur Maurois did in a book entitled David, ou le genie malgré lui, that the whole of his labour on historical pictures was misdirected, is a shallow paradox which would have been treated in fine style by French critics if it had been expressed by an English¬man.
While he was in prison David also made the drawing for his next great work, The Sabine women enforcing peace by running between the combatants. The theme has changed from stoic patriotism, which overrides domestic affection, to conciliation effected by the tender emotions. There is no real reason why this theme should have been less inspiring than the sterner moral of his revolutionary works; but unfortunately in the painting's execution other influences intervened. The drawing made in prison shows the two heroes, Romulus and Tatius, clad in Roman armour. In the picture [14, 1] they are nude. David has allowed his friend, Quatremère de Quincy, a disciple of Winckelmann, and a most dogmatic theorist of pure classicism, to persuade him that only thus can he achieve the ideal. These figures are not only improbable in a field of battle they are also rendered down to the smoothness and vacuity of restored Hellenistic sculpture. David defended their nudity in a pamphlet but the theory of generalised form was considered axiomatic and needed no defence. 'In the Horatii,' said David, 'I showed too much knowledge of anatomy. In the Sabines I shall treat this part of the art with more skill and taste. This painting will be more Greek.' Yet David himself was aware of the dangers of classicism. He had always set himself up to be the enemy of academism. He would not employ professional models, and although the poses of his figures are taken direct from other works of art - the Romulus, for example, is taken from Flaxman -he always painted them from the life, from friends and pupils, and from a queue of society ladies who waited outside his studio in hope of being immortalised as Roman matrons. His portraits show us how skilfully he could generalise direct from his model, as one can see in his portrait of Madame Verninac [15]. Incidentally, she was Delacroix's sister, and Delacroix kept the picture in his bedroom all his life - another proof of how the conflict between classic and romantic is largely artificial. In his histories David tuned each form up to the concert pitch of the ideal, and we can perhaps only tell by ear when a string has been screwed too tight. In the Sabines, for example, I feel that the group of Hersilia and the Sabine women is perfectly har¬monious, but my ear is slightly offended by Romulus and shocked by Tatius, though David thought that they were the chief beauties in a picture which he always regarded as his masterpiece.
After 1799 David, in common with other revolutionaries, adopted a new hero - General Buonaparte; and no man has ever been made to look more heroic than the First Consul, in a totally unrealistic but stunningly effective memorial to his greatest exploit, crossing the Great St Bernard [16]. The First Consul had inspected the Sabines and made the rather obvious remark that it did not resemble a real battle. Nevertheless, he tried, unsuccessfully, to take David to Egypt on his campaign. On his return Buonaparte visited David again and asked what he was about to paint. 'Leonidas at Thermopylae', was the reply. 'Tant pis,9 said Napoleon, 'you are mistaken, David, to waste time on painting the defeated.' No wonder that the work which David carried out for his new master was less ideal than his great pictures of the eighties, was even, for all its colossal accomplishment, slightly commonplace. The Coronation of Napoleon does not come into the history of classicism, but into that of official painting. To recognize its merits we need only compare it with the attempts to paint the last four coronations in England. Of course it is more skilful, but it is of the same family. The heads of the ladies are very accomplished, and might have been painted at any epoch - I should have guessed about 1900 - but they are not art. They prove the high power of idealization in David's earlier works, even those like the Horatii, which seem realistic. Only when he came to Pope Pius VII [18] has David been moved by the beautiful Italian modelling of his head, and perhaps by the sentiment patiens quia aeterna, and has given it the lasting charac-ter of form. He also did an independent likeness of the Pope, which shows that he had not lost his powers as a portrait painter. The Holy Father had expressed some concern at sitting to a painter who, as he put it 'had killed his King and would easily make a bonfire of a poor old Pope of papier maché\ But David was delighted. 'I will have painted an Emperor', said the old revolutionary, 'and now at last a Pope'.
To say that David betrayed his ideals or allowed himself to be corrupted by Napoleon would be an over-simplification. But, alas, however much an official painter may wish to retain his integrity, the practice of executing commissions and the thousand distractions of public life so sap his powers of concentration that when he returns to the kind of painting which he has always sincerely desired to achieve, he can no longer do so. His hand, responding more truth¬fully to the situation than his brain, refuses to obey his will. It was courageous of David to return to his Leonidas at Thermopylae [17], especially at a moment when defeat may have seemed to the Emperor almost too interesting a subject for art; but to my eye the picture is completely dead. David himself seems to have been unconscious of any falling off in his powers, and regarded the Leonidas as at least equal to the Sabines.
To understand the reason for this we must read the account of David's intentions preserved by the engraver, who took a proof of the Leonidas for the artist to correct. They are literary and moral. He describes at great length the thoughts that are passing through the hero's mind, and which are all expressed in his head - painted, David says, with inspiration. The classic doctrine that a picture should be like a heroic poem is pushed to its limit. But at this distance of time David can communicate with us only through pictorial means; and from this point of view the figure of Leonidas is a failure. It is taken from a gem in Winckelmann's Monumenti Inediti and many of the other figures are derived from antiques. The Leonidas is indeed an extreme example of neo-Classical generalization. Every living particularity lies been smoothed away, and we do not feel in compensation any intellectual grasp of abstract form. This, which was once considered the summit of classicism, now appears to be its dead end. We may think of it when we come to look at Gericault’s Cuirassier and Ingres' Jupiter and Thetis, both painted in the same decade.
After the Restoration David was exiled to Brussels, and the pictures painted there show a pathetic decline. The most interesting of them the wonderful portrait of Madame Tangry and her daughters [19], is now thought to have been executed by his pupil Navez, although the drawing and design is surely by David. By returning to the truth, he has recaptured in it some of the genuinely classical quality of the eighties. The heads have the frontality and the unflinching-regard of Roman funerary monuments, and the grave realism of Roman portrait busts. Even the hats remind one of the grotesque coiffures of Trajanic empresses. This Roman quality may be con¬trasted with the Alexandrine decadence of his last picture, the Mars disarmed by Venus [20]. It is a painfully bad picture. The cupid undoing Mars' sandal is really vulgar. Such qualities of style as it retains are due to his old love of the ballet - the source that had inspired the Horatii and Hersilia. The Three Graces have exactly the character of old ballet prints, including the champagne bottle shoulders and the too prominent pink faces; the Venus is actually a portrait of Mademoiselle Leseuer, the prima ballerina of Theatre de la Monnaie in Brussels. We see that David, who once believed him¬self to be the creator of fashion, was actually blown about like anyone else by the winds of contemporary style. As a matter of fact, the Mars and Venus is more like the late antique painting as we know it in the frescoes from Herculaneum than is the Horatii, but the virtues of classic art have been completely lost. The long conflict between the masculine and feminine principles is over: Mars is disarmed. Rome is succeeded by Alexandria; and we realise how much the character of David's work depended on the romantic projection of his own moral struggle.
The decadence of David's style was not due solely to personal reasons; it was also the reflection of a general failure of classicism, both as style and as a philosophy, to express the spirit of the revolu¬tionary age. However much the various phases of the French Revo¬lution may have modelled themselves on Roman history - the early phase on Republican virtue, the later on Imperial grandeur - the fact remains that classicism depended on a fixed and rational philoso¬phy; whereas the spirit of the Revolution was one of change and of emotion. What we call romanticism was inevitably the living impulse of the nineteenth century, and after about 1815 classicism (except in architecture) became an art for connoisseurs except when it was saved by its old ally, realism. Fortunately in these years the highly specialized style of neo-classicism had been adopted by a man of genius — Ingres. It is symbolic that Ingres should have painted the candlestick in David's most feminine picture, the Madame Recamier. I am not saying that Ingres was a less great artist than David: on the contrary, I have an unbounded admiration for him. But I do think that in two or three of his works David achieved, through imagination and design, a moral and philosophic stature, which the pure aestheticism of Ingres could not achieve.

En 1755 Winckelmann, el primer hombre con dones especiales de ocuparse en la historia del arte, publicó un libro llamado Reflexiones sobre la imitación de las obras griegas, que se convertiría en un texto sagrado sobre el clasicismo. Al año siguiente, Burke, el estatista y filósofo publicó su Indagación filosófica sobre el origen de nuestras ideas acerca de lo sublime y de lo bello, donde describía las aspiraciones del romanticismo y describió sus objetivos. Estas divergencias no fueron simplemente técnicas, pues proporcionó de visibilidad al cambio filosófico que más tarde se manifestaría en todas las artes.
Los clasicistas pensaban, en palabras de Winckelmann, que «el arte debe aspirar a la simplicidad noble y a una pausada grandeza»; los románticos afirmaban que el arte debía provocar las emociones, en particular la del miedo, que era el origen de lo sublime. El romanticismo, mientras se desarrollaba proponía una serie de nuevos valores. Se convirtió en una rebelión contra la conformidad estática del siglo XVIII, y en las artes se convirtió en una rebelión contra el préstamo generalizado de las formas de la escultura greco-latina y en contra de la prohibición del color y el movimiento como expresión de fuerza vital. Winckelmann había afirmado que «de la belleza recuerda el agua más límpida que mana de una fuente pura, siendo así más saludable al carecer de ningún sabor». No es sorprendente que el arte producido en conformidad con esta doctrina no sea de nuestro interés en absoluto. El artista que mejor se ajustó a las teorías de Winckelmann fue Raphael Mengs, pintor alemán residente en Roma, siendo su obra maestra el techo que pintó para el coleccionista más famoso de su época, el Cardenal Albani [2] y aunque indudablemente insípido, tampoco es nada puro. Está basado en estereotipos de la época y es fundamentalmente frívolo. No refleja la vida sino algunos delirios insustanciales de los entendidos y coleccionistas.
El hombre que se revolvió contra todo este estilo irreal, Jacques-Louis David era así mismo un clasicista, aunque su clasicismo se nutrió del contacto con la naturaleza y por un apasionado compromiso con la vida humana y la sociedad. Tanto en política como en el arte fue un rebelde al viejo estilo. Nació en París en 1748 y al principio se encontraba feliz de pintando en los estilos de moda de la entonces, pero en 1775, después de heroicas dificultades ganó el diploma de la Academia de París y se fue a Roma. Cuando llegó a la Villa Medici, la influencia de Winckelmann estaba en su punto más alto. Las excavaciones de Pompeya y Herculano entonces no llevaban ni veinte años. Era un momento casi tan excitante como el Renacimiento temprano, o si lo comparamos con los descubrimientos de nuestra época, tales como el arte chino inicial o el arte de los primitivos, para que nos hiciéramos una idea. David llenó su mente con la historia de Roma, sus cuadernos de dibujos de contornos de esculturas antiguas y a su vuelta a París en 1780 se propuso revivir en la pintura las virtudes de los antiguos. Característicamente una de sus primeras pinturas, El conde Potoki a caballo [3] pertenece todavía al estilo del siglo XVIII, una de las últimas obras del virtuosismo del ancien régime. Pero en el mismo año de 1781, siguiendo a Poussin como modelo, intentó realizar algo más serio. Su Belisario pidiendo limosna, en la que el anciano general es reconocido por uno de antiguos soldados, podría haber sido pintada en el siglo XVII por la por el noble paisaje del fondo. Es davidiana por sus amplios gestos y en ella encontramos por primera vez una característica que se convierte casi en una marca distintiva de las mejores obras de David, una que indudablemente tenía para él un simbolismo inconsciente, la palma abierta de la mano. Su Belisario obtuvo mucho reconocimiento aunque David se dio cuenta que no era el tipo de clasicismo que la época reclamaba o que él estaba destinado a pintar. Era demasiado tradicional, demasiado representativo para los entendidos. Su clasicismo debía ser revolucionario, debía atraer a la ciudadanía y a los amigos de la ciudadanía, a los filósofos. El resultado fue El juramento de los Horacios [5]
Los Horacios es una de esas obras sobre las que sería muy fácil escribir un libro corto. No es otra cosa que el ideal de cuadro que a los historiadores del arte les gustaría que fueran las obras artísticas; una ilustración perfecta para la historia social. Aunque encargada por Luis XVI, en ella se demuestra la nueva franqueza moral y el estoicismo que precedió a la revolución francesa. David escribió a su pupilo Gros: «Amas demasiado el arte como para ocuparte de asuntos frívolos. Vite, vite, mon ami, feutillez votre Plutarque». (Rápido, rápido amigo, pasa las hojas de tu Plutarco). Esta sensación no se encuentra expresada en menor medida por su autor que por la combinación de realismo y rigor arcaico de su estilo; y en ella encontramos la aceptación profunda de su separación del clasicismo vacuo de Mengs. Podemos considerarla un ejemplo del clasicismo por su composición frontal, su acción concentrada, por sus expresiones elevadas y la rigurosidad de lo anecdótico, aunque David ha sido demasiado honesto para suprimir la verdad en favor de una forma ideal. La mano abierta, conscientemente el símbolo central de su diseño, otorga la fuerza de la singularidad que hubiera estremecido a Winckelmann. También le habrían dejado estupefacto la representación de los capiteles dóricos, considerados entonces alejados de los cánones de la elegancia clásica. David los eligió conscientemente —por primera vez, según mi opinión— como símbolos de las virtudes incorruptibles de los romanos y como su fuerza primitiva. El lienzo no es otra cosa, sin duda, más que un una obra consciente de propaganda que se había planeado como una campaña política. La idea original, que no se encuentra presente en el drama de Corneille, parece tener un origen algo cuestionable, como es un ballet de Noverre, que a su vez se había inspirado en el artista del mimo David Garrick. La interacción permanente entre lo clásico y lo romántico queda reflejada por el hecho de que las poses de los hermanos parecen haber sido inventadas por Fuseli. Una vez decidido el motivo del cuadro, David anunció que solamente podría pintarse en la aquiescente atmósfera de Roma y hacia allí se encaminó con un séquito de ayudantes y pupilos El proceso de pintado le llevó once meses de trabajo sistemático, siendo la parte más problemática el pie derecho del padre, que tuvo que volver a pintarlo veinte veces, e incluso al final no lo consideraba lo suficientemente ideal. Se presentó el cuadro de los Horacios en 1785 en el estudio de David de la Piazza del Popolo y las masas que lo visitaron tendieron ante el cuadro una alfombra de flores. El cuadro una vez de vuelta en París, y a pesar del rechazo oficial, causó un efecto parecido al que nos produjo la presentación del Guernica de Picasso en cierta manera. Y así, a través de una obra de arte, el hombre se volvió consciente de su responsabilidad moral.
El juramento de los Horacios continúa siendo una obra impresionante. El gesto unificado y totalitario de los hermanos, como la imagen de una rueda rotatoria, posee un efecto casi hipnótico. Cualesquiera que sean sus orígenes —bien Poussin o bien Fuseli—, mantiene la emoción de un descubrimiento personal y la recurrencia a la repetición que continúa su aparición desde Flaxman al Chahut de Seurat- En los Horacios encontramos un convincente símbolo de la acción decidida que contrasta con las líneas suaves de las mujeres a la derecha; sensuales, pasivas, incapaces de un sacrificio heroico. Para comprender cuánto de personal y también diríamos de original es el estilo que David creó en los Horacios solamente tenemos que compararlo con el Rapto de las Sabinas [6] de Poussin, de la que parece haberse inspirado en la figura del hermano dirigente. La extraordinaria capacidad de eliminación y concentración se ponen de manifiesto y opino que se deben al estudio de las obras de Caravaggio en Roma. Que el archiclasicista se inspirara en el gran anticlásico parece cuando menos sorprendente en un principio hasta que recordamos que David era sobre todo un revolucionario, rebelado contra la frivolidad el mero hecho de pintar sin sentido. Caravaggio, en sus momentos más realistas , donde también aparecen las palmas de las manos, aspiraba a lo mismo, y por esta sinceridad la influencia de Caravaggio estaba ya aceptada en el clasicismo francés, pues nadie pone en duda que la concentración dramática y oscura del Testamento de Eudamidas [7] de Poussin está influenciada por el revolucionario romano, al igual que tampoco se cuestiona que David hubiera visto una reproducción de la extraordinaria obra —el original era inaccesible—, tan llena de características davidianas, desde la composición en paralelo a las mujeres sollozantes de la derecha. El cuadro de los Horacios posee otro atributo que lo enfrenta a la estricta teoría del arte clásico y es que está realizado con una apreciación de la naturaleza de la pintura. Este sentido de jolie matière fue algo que David conservó de su recalcitrante etapa pre revolucionaria, una indulgencia de la que se avergonzaba tan solo a medias, usada habitualmente en sus retratos y que no lograba suprimir en sus historias. Una reciente restauración ha revelado un tratamiento más suave hacia las figuras femeninas antes que fueran repintadas en el estilo estoico, en un contraste total con las esmaltadas superficies de Ingres.
Los Horacios encumbraron a David como uno de los líderes de la vida nacional. A partir de entonces sus cuadros adquirieron la importancia de manifiestos. Era una posición a la que aspiraban muchos artistas desde los tiempos de Rafael, pero que ninguno consiguió al mismo nivel. David se dio cuenta que esto era un sueño que con un destino fatal para muchos pintores mediocres, e incluso para aquellos de tantísimo talento como Diego Rivera y Orozco; el sueño del pintor que puede usar su arte para influenciar la conducta de la ciudadanía. Por supuesto que esos eran unos años en los que la opinión pública se encontraba muy susceptible a la influencia del arte. El profeta de este movimiento, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, no era menos filósofo que artista. La doctrina se encontraba presente en obras que nos parecen inofensivas. Podemos creer que Las bodas de Fígaro se escribieron tan solo para entretenernos, pero en 1785 fue considerada una bomba política, ya que entre 1780 y 1790 cada obra de teatro y cada representación de ballet era interpretada en sentido político; algo que no nos sorprende si recordamos el reciente destino de Shostakovich o releemos el tercer libro de la República de Platón. Tal vez, tan solo, en Inglaterra se piensa que la influencia de las artes en la vida del Estado pueda parecer una tontería.
Las dos grandes obras que pintó David en el periodo entre Los Horacios y la Revolución fueron celebraciones del estoicismo y el sacrificio. La primera, La muerte de Sócrates, es la menos davidiana de todas sus obras mayores; la historia y el éthos griego no armonizaba tanto con su carácter como el de Roma. Indudablemente eligió el tema como un ejemplo de sacrificio, aunque los motivos que condujeron a Sócrates a aceptar tranquilamente la cicuta eran demasiado complejos y desinteresados para un hombre cuya mente se movía en el campo de la acción. Como resultado, el cuadro, aunque de una composición admirable, curiosamente no tiene la personalidad de David ni como resultado, su estilo. La acción de la palma de las manos se ha reducido casi a lo mínimo, habiéndose relegado a la pequeña figura de Jantipa, que en un principio se encontraba sentada a los pies de la cama pero que fue reemplazada por Platón, que en realidad en ese momento tenía solamente veinticinco años y no se encontraba presente en ese momento. Este personaje es uno de los pocos motivos que David pintó con modelos en vivo, correspondiendo a la figura más impresionante de toda la composición. Pero la falta de su estilo en la representación la convierte en un perfecto ejemplo del clasicismo. Para alarma de muchos de los académicos ingleses se propuso exponer el Sócrates en la Royal Academy en 1788, fecha en el que un crítico escribió que «era un cuadro que haría honor a la Atenas de la época de Pericles y que después de diez días de observarla continuamente me parece perfecta en todas sus partes». Estas palabras aparecen en todos los escritos sobre David como una afirmación de Sir Joshua Reynolds de quien se dice que había visto el cuadro en el Salón de 1787, aunque no son del estilo de Reynolds y por lo que yo sé nunca mencionó a David.
En su siguiente obra [8] David retorna a su Plutarco y al mundo de la voluntad. En él se representa a los lictores trayendo de vuelta a casa de Bruto los cuerpos de sus dos hijos a quienes él mismo había condenado a muerte; uno de esos incidentes de la historia de Roma sin atractivo para una era humanitaria pero que en 1789 parecía el culmen de la virtud patriótica. Era un tema calculado para inflamar la opinión pública porque trataba el asunto de los traidores, creaciones bien conocidas en tiempos de crisis o revoluciones y el éxito del cuadro como propaganda fue inmediato. Según mi opinión, su continuado éxito como obra de arte es considerable. Las figuras, como casi siempre, están todas sacadas de la antigüedad; la de Brutus directamente de la estatua Capitolina. Incluso los muebles son reproducciones de los antiguas realizadas por el gran ebanista Jacob Pero según mi opinión la idea de situar la figura de Bruto en una esquina sombreada de la composición me parece un golpe de imaginación a la vez que el grupo de la madre y las hijas en las que hábilmente incluye a Niobe y a una bacante está bellísimamente diseñado. Esto demuestra que David, al contrario de lo que se pensaba, era un hombre que a pesar de pertenecer al siglo XVIII apreciaba suficientemente la feminidad. Esto es obvio cuando uno recuerda sus retratos, edonde las figuras femeninas desempeñan una parte esencial figuras en sus composiciones. Sus obras en las que aparecen, si se me permite expresarlo, exclusivamente personajes masculinos, el Sócrates y la de Leónidas están pintadas con mucho menos efusión e interés personal. El motivo es que en sus mejores pinturas el corazón del drama está situado en el conflicto entre el espíritu masculino y femenino. Esto nos conmueve puesto que era un conflicto en el que el mismo David se encontraba inmerso. Es cierto que David, como afirmaban sus contemporáneos era «el pintor de la voluntad»; y que en el cuadro de los Horacios y el de Bruto la voluntad se impone a los sentimientos de sacrificio y el deber, a pesar de muchos conflictos internos triunfa el autor de Madame Récamier, [10] la obra que David consideraba su obra maestra, lo femenino es lo que realmente triunfa.
El lienzo de Bruto se expuso en 1789 y durante los cuatro años siguientes el movimiento en el que la obra de David había desempeñado un importante papel, sufrió una crisis que atrapó a todos los que habían estado en contacto con esta corriente. El artista que consigue influir en los hechos reales termina por abandonar el independiente mundo de la contemplación para entrar el limitado mundo de la acción y muy poco después se encuentra con que debe abandonar el arte por el de la política. David se adhirió al juramento Juego de la de Pelota, se convirtió en un miembro de la Convención y votó la muerte del rey. Gran parte de su tiempo lo pasó organizando fiestas y desfiles —en los que se evidenciaba su penosa falta de invención—, diseñando uniformes y resolviendo problemas administrativos en relación con la Academia. Debo añadir que desempeñó estas últimas funciones con extraordinaria imparcialidad y moderación, pues ni un solo artista fue guillotinado y propuso rendir homenajes públicos a caracteres tan poco revolucionarios como el anciano Fragonard y a Madame Vigée Lebrun. También encontró tiempo para empezar el gran cuadro del Juramento del Juego de Pelota que se encontraba fragmentado por lo que podemos deducir de los bocetos preliminares. También produjo una obra maestra, su homenaje a Marat.
La muerte de Marat es según mi opinión el mejor cuadro político que se haya pintado nunca. Es la casi única justificación de la creencia popular de la que un evento que ha excitado la emoción pública se convierta inmediatamente en el motivo de una obra de arte. Pictóricamente se convirtió en un triunfo para la disciplina clásica. David, que tenía la costumbre de reflexionar cada detalle, tuvo que pintarlo con gran rapidez, aun así transmite concentración y un carácter definitivo que es el resultado de una eliminación prolongada. La figura, sin olvidarnos de la caja de madera y los papeles en trampantojo, nos transmiten la impresión de una verdad absoluta a pesar que conocemos que la cara y el cuerpo de Marat estaban desfigurados por la enfermedad que David no se atrevía a representar.
La Muerte de Marat tiene un especial interés hoy en día para nosotros. Demuestra que el arte totalitario debe ser una forma de clasicismo; el Estado que se asienta en el orden y la subordinación necesita un arte con esas mismas bases. La pintura romántica, independientemente de su popularidad, expresa la rebelión del individuo. El Estado también necesita de un arte de la razón por el que se pueden producir obras cuando sean necesarias. La inspiración se sitúa fuera del control del Estado. La actitud del clasicismo con respecto el tema en cuestión, que debe ser clara e inequívoca, se basa en la actitud de la convicción incuestionable. Si añadimos el hecho que el arte totalitario debe ser lo suficientemente realista para complacer a los ignorantes, lo suficientemente ideal como para conmemorar a un héroe nacional y lo suficientemente bien presentado como imagen memorable, uno no puede cuando menos ver cuán perfectamente La muerte de Marat cumple con las condiciones. Pero sucede también que una gran obra de arte puede ser peligrosamente desorientadora.
Varios meses después de finalizar el cuadro, la carrera política de David estaba terminada y el 13 del termidor fue arrestado con peligro para su vida. En su primera cárcel disponía de una bonita vista sobre los Jardines de Luxemburgo, los que pintó con una libertad y naturalismo que demuestra que era un pintor de nacimiento. Su segundo encarcelamiento fue más desagradable, ya que pintores rivales erigieron una guillotina frente a su ventana. También pintó un autorretrato que firmó «David in Vinculis»
Ningún encarcelamiento ni ninguna amenaza de guillotina le hubiera apesadumbrado tanto como saber la concepción moderna que tienen hoy sus retratos y que por la que es principalmente reconocido. Indudablemente fue un retratista admirable y sus obras en este campo todo el mundo puede apreciar. Sus dos ejemplos más encantadores son sus alegres Sériziats [12-13], pintados inmediatamente después de su puesta en libertad y que parecen reflejar la sensación de bienestar después de abandonar la prisión y la política. Son verdaderamente más agradables de mirar que al implacable Bruto;aquí podemos apreciar un anticipo del primitivismo de Ingres en el traje blanco y las flores (y también a un temprano Caravaggio). Pero afirmar, como dijera Monsieur Maurois en su libro David, ou le genie malgré lui que todo su trabajo para sus obras históricas habían estado mal planteadas es una frívola paradoja a la que los críticos franceses hubieran respondido con un refinado estilo si esta afirmación hubiera provenido de un inglés.
Mientras estaba encarcelado, David también realizó los bocetos para su próxima gran obra, Las Sabinas imponen la paz entre los combatientes. El tema central ya no está centrado en el patriotismo estoico, que hacía caso omiso del afecto existente entre los ciudadanos, sino la conciliación conseguida por las emociones. No existe ninguna razón por la que este tema le debiera haber inspirado menos que sus obras revolucionarias, tan férreas en su moralidad, aunque desgraciadamente en la ejecución de la obra estuvieron presentes otras influencias. En los bocetos realizados en la cárcel encontramos a los dos héroes, Rómulo y Remo en sus armaduras romanas. Sin embargo,en el cuadro [14,1] están desnudos. David permitió a su amigo Quatremère de Quincy, discípulo de Winckelmann y dogmático defensor de las teorías del clasicismo puro, persuadirle que sólo de esta manera podría alcanzar el ideal. Estas figuras no solamente son improbables en un campo de batalla sino que están representadas con la uniformidad y vacuidad de las esculturas helenas restauradas. David defendió la desnudez en un panfleto pero la teoría de la formas en general se consideró evidente y no había necesidad de defenderla- En Los Horacios, afirmó David, «demostré demasiado conocimientos de la anatomía. En Las Sabinas trataré esta parte del arte con más habilidad y gusto. Esta pintura será más griega». Aun así, él era consciente del peligro del clasicismo. Se había considerado siempre enemigo del academicismo. Nunca contrató a modelos profesionales y a pesar de que las poses de sus figuras estén tomadas directamente de otras obras de arte —la de Rómulo por ejemplo está sacada de Flaxman—, él siempre las pintó en vivo, de amigos y pupilos y de una serie de damas de la sociedad que esperaban fuera de su estudio con la esperanza de ser inmortalizadas como matronas romanas. Su retratos nos muestran con qué habilidad podía universalizar sin rodeos desde su modelo, como podemos ver en su retrato de Madame Verninac [15]. Por cierto que ella era la hermana de Delacroix y el mismo Delacroix guardó el cuadro en su dormitorio toda su vida; otra muestra de que el conflicto entre el clasicismo y el romanticismo es en gran medida artificial. En sus historias David afinaba cada forma al tono del concierto ideal, y nosotros tal vez solamente podemos distinguir de oído cuando una cuerda se ha apretado demasiado. En Las Sabinas, por ejemplo, opino que el grupo de Hersilia y de las sabinas se encuentra en una armonía perfecta, sin embargo, según mi oído, Rómulo desentona ligeramente mientras que Tacio me deja aturdido, aunque David los consideró como los reyes de la belleza de un cuadro que él siempre consideró como su obra maestra.
Posteriormente, en 1799, David y otros revolucionarios adoptaron a un nuevo héroe; el Genereral Bonaparte, y a nadie se le había hecho nunca parecer más heroico que al Primer Cónsul en un homenaje tan poco realista como asombrosamente efectivo por su hazaña, El Paso de San Bernardo [16] El Primer Cónsul había inspeccionado las Sabinas y había realizado el obvio comentario de que no se parecía en nada a una batalla verdadera. Aun así intentó sin éxito llevarse con én a David a Egipto su en su campaña militar. A su vuelta Bonaparte visitó a David y le preguntó qué era lo que empezaría a pintar. «Leónidas en las Termópilas» fue la respuesta. «Tant pis» dijo Napoleón «se equivoca, David, al perder el tiempo pintando a los derrotados». No nos sorprende que la obra que David realizara para su nuevo patrón fuera menos ideal que las grandes pinturas de los años ochenta del siglo XVII fueran, a pesar todos sus logros colosales, ligeramente triviales, La Coronación de Napoleón no entra en historia del clasicismo sino en la de las pinturas oficiales. Para reconocer sus méritos tan sólo necesitamos compararla con los intentos de pintar las cuatro últimas coronaciones de Inglaterra. Por supuesto que está realizada con más maestría, pero pertenecen a la misma clase de pintura. Las cabezas de las señoras están muy logradas y pudieran haber sido pintadas en cualquier época —supondría que alrededor de 1900— pero están realizadas sin arte. Estas demuestran el gran poder de idealización que tenían sus primeros trabajos, incluso si las comparamos con obras como Los Horacios, parecen reales. Una vez que se presentó ante el Papa Pío VII se sintió conmovido por la belleza de la forma de su cabeza y tal vez por el sentimiento de patiens quia aeterna, le proporcionó su característica forma final. También realizó un retrato independiente del Papa, lo que demuestra que no había perdido sus habilidades como pintor retratista. El Santo Padre había expresado su preocupación de sentarse ante un pintor que como él dijo « había matado a su rey y que haría una hoguera de un viejo pobre Papa de papier maché». Pero David se sentía encantado. «Habré pintado un emperador», aseguró el viejo revolucionario, «y ahora por fin un papa».
Sería una simplicidad afirmar que David había traicionado sus ideales o haberse permitido corromperse por Napoleón. Pero desafortunadamente, aunque algún pintor oficial quiera conservar su integridad, la práctica de realizar encargos y las miles de distracciones de la vida pública minan la capacidad de concentración de tal manera que cuando vuelve a este tipo de pintura que siempre han deseado alcanzar, no puede realizarlas. Su mano, respondiendo más honestamente a la situación que su mente, rechaza obedecer su voluntad. Fue muy valiente por parte de David volver a su Leónidas en las Termópilas [17]; especialmente en un momento cuando la derrota podría parecer al Emperador un asunto mucho más interesante que el arte, pero según mi punto de vista, David parecía no ser consciente de su pérdida de facultades, y consideró al cuadro de Leónidas al menos igual que al de Las Sabinas.
Para entender los motivos de esta afirmación debemos leer el relato de las intenciones de David que conservó el grabador que le presentó unas muestras del grabado del Leónidas al artista. Son literarias y morales. En ellas describe con gran detalle los pensamientos que pasaban por la mente del héroe clásico y que las expresa con su cabeza —según David—pintada con inspiración. El principio clásico que afirma que un cuadro debe ser como un poema heroico en este casi se lleva hasta el límite. Aunque con la distancia del tiempo David sólo puede comunicarse con nosotros mediante sus pinturas y según este punto de vista la figura de Leónidas es un fracaso. Esto es una gema extraída del Monumenti Indediti de Winckelmann El Leónidas es sin duda un claro ejemplo de estereotipo neoclásico. Todos los detalles vivos se han difuminado y a cambio no nos recompensa con ningún discernimiento intelectual de abstracción. Lo que una vez se considerara la cima del clasicismo ahora mismo se presenta como una vía muerta. Debemos recordarlo cuando contemplemos el Cuirassier de Géricault y Júpiter y Tetis de Ingres, los dos pintados en la misma década.
Después de la Restauración David se exilió en Bruselas y las pinturas realizadas allí muestran una patética decadencia. La más interesante de éstas, el maravilloso retrato de Madame Tangry y sus hijas se considera actualmente haber sido realizado por su pupilo Navez, aunque el dibujo y el diseño seguramente pertenecen a David. Si hemos de ser honestos, en esta obra reconquistó algunas de las virtudes clásicas de los años ochenta del siglo XVIII. Las cabezas muestran la frontalidad, la mirada inquebrantable de los monumentos funerarios romanos y el solemne realismo de los bustos funerarios romanos. Incluso los sombreros recuerdan los grotescos peinados romanos de la época de Trajano. Estas características romanas encuentran su contraste con la decadencia alejandrina de su última pintura, Marte desarmado por Venus [20]. Es una dolorosa mala pintura. Cupido desatando las sandalias de Marte es realmente vulgar. Las características del estilo que mantiene se debe a su antigua pasión por el ballet, la fuente que le inspiró para pintar Horacio y Hersilia. En esta obra c las Las tres gracias tienen las mismas características que de antiguos grabados de ballet, incluyendo los hombros en forma de botella de champán. La Venus es en realidad un retrato de Mademoiselle Leseuer, la bailarina principal del teatro de la Monnaie de Bruselas. Podemos comprobar que David, quien alguna vez se consideró a sí mismo como el creador de la moda, fue destronado de esa posición por los vientos del estilo contemporáneo. En realidad el Martes y Venus se parece más a la pintura antigua más tardía que conocemos por los frescos de Herculano que aparecen en los Horacios, pero donde las virtudes del arte clásico se han perdido totalmente. El largo conflicto entre lo masculino y lo femenino se ha perdido totalmente. Marte está desarmado. Alejandría reemplaza a Roma y es cuando nos damos cuenta de cómo el carácter de la obra de David depende de la proyección romántica de su propio conflicto moral
En la decadencia del estilo de David no solo influyeron los motivos personales, era también una reflexión sobre el fracaso general del clasicismo, tanto de estilo como de filosofía, para expresar el espíritu de la era revolucionaria. Aunque muchas de las numerosas fases de la Revolución francesa pudieran haber encontrado modelo en la historia romana —la primera fase de las virtudes republicanas y después la grandeza imperial—, la verdad es que el clasicismo se basaba en una filosofía fija y racional, mientras que el espíritu de la Revolución se afirmaba en cambios y emociones. Lo que conocemos como romanticismo se convirtió inevitablemente en el impulso vital del siglo XIX, y después de 1815 el clasicismo, con excepción de la arquitectura, se convirtió en un arte para entendidos, excepto cuando fue rescatado por su antiguo aliado, el realismo. Por fortuna durante eso años el estilo neoclásico tan altamente especializado recibió entre sus filas a otro gran genio; Ingres. Es muy simbólico que Ingre hubiera pintado el candelabro de la obra más femenina de David, Madame Recamier. Con ello no estoy afirmando que Ingres no fuera un artista tan grande como David, al contrario, tengo una admiración ilimitada hacia él. Pero considero que en dos o tres de sus obras David consiguió mediante su imaginación y diseño una categoría moral y filosófica que Ingres no alcanzaría con su esteticismo puro.
