Soils
6.1 Introduction
Sewage sludge is an inevitable by-product of wastewater treatment processes. Being the concentrate of impurities removed from the spent water, it contains compounds of agricultural value that mainly include nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic matter, and potential harmful substances that include trace elements (for example, Cd and Pb), organic
chemicals (for example, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)) and pathogens. In the urban settings and from the environmental sanitation perspective, sewage sludge is a ‘waste’. Its final disposal, however, has been problematic as it lacks appropriate outlets
and there is not an entirely satisfactory resolution. Land application is by far the most common approach employed by treatment works around the world. ‘Biosolids’, in the United States, refers to municipal sewage sludge that has been treated to meet product quality standards for environmentally safe land applications. The term biosolids is employed to emphasize the beneficial nature of the products. The United States
Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) defines biosolids as ‘the nutrient-rich organic materials resulting from the treatment of domestic sewage in a treatment facility’ that may be recycled and applied as fertilizers to improve and maintain productivity of soils and
stimulate plant growth [1]. Given the time-tested experiences of using human excrement, sewage, and animal manure on croplands worldwide, applying biosolids to agricultural lands was a logical extension.
According to a US National Research Council report [2], approximately 60 % of the biosolids generated in the nation was land applied in 2002. With proper treatment, biosolids had been applied on croplands, forests, and reclamation sites, parks, golf courses, lawns, and home gardens with negligible adverse impacts to the exposed populations [1,3,4]. The
USEPA expected that the use of biosolids would increase to 70 % in 2010 [5]. In a survey of its production, use, and disposal, the United Kingdom reported that nearly 45 % of the nation’s sewage sludge was spread on approximately 0.3 % of the agricultural land [6]. The situations in other parts of the world are expected to be similar [7,8]. Biosolids when land applied provides soils with organic matter and offers the opportunity
of recycling plant nutrients that improve their fertility and physicochemical properties [6–13]. On the average, biosolids contains 3.2 % N, 2.3 % P, and 0.3 % K [14]. Biosolids however may contain disease-causing organisms and/or chemical pollutants that are potentially hazardous in land applications. In the soil, pathogens rapidly die off and do
not present long-lasting detrimental environmental effects. Chemical pollutants such as trace elements, however, may persist in receiving soils and be absorbed in sufficient quantities by growing plants to adversely affect the health of consumers and/or growing plants. Long-term, repeated land applications of biosolids may result in significant buildup
of trace elements in cropland soils [15]. The enrichments in the soils in turn may lead to loss in soil fertility and to accelerate transfer of trace elements through the food chain. A conservative approach to dealing with the uncertainties of the potential harm is to minimize accumulation of potentially toxic trace elements in the receiving soils by
matching the inputs from biosolids application to the outputs through crop removal, soil erosion, and leaching. When the input equals the output, trace element concentrations of the receiving soils remain at the background levels [16]. Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands,
and Denmark all have adopted standards based on this principle. The EU sewage sludge disposal initiative as outlined in the Working Document on Sludge (3rd draft, Brussels, 2000, http://europa.eu.int/comm/environment/sudge/report10.htm) embraced a similarly restrictive
approach that limited the trace element loading comparably to the no observed adverse effect level applicable to the most sensitive soil biota. In the spirit of resource conservation and recycling, the land application regulations of the US maximized the pollutant attenuation
capacities of the receiving soils and permitted the pollutants (trace elements) to accumulate in the receiving soils to the maximum levels that considered safe to the exposed populations, that is, the growing plants, foraging animals, and human consumers [1]. Because of the
differences in the underlying regulatory philosophy and goal, the resulting numerical limits for the trace elements were significantly different (see Chapter 13). There have been calls for caution since the promulgation of the regulations [17–20]. Are USEPA regulations protective over the long term with respect to accumulation of potentially toxic trace elements from cropland application of biosolids? Conversely, is the approach adopted in the EU sewage sludge disposal initiatives too restrictive to limit the beneficial use of biosolids as fertilizer supplements on croplands? It is imperative that the environmental behavior of trace elements in biosolids-amended soils be objectively evaluated.

Source text - English Many of the great works of ancient science were lost in the collapse of Greco-Roman civilization, though in the past century a few of these classics have been rediscovered from the dustbin of history in some cases almost miraculously.
In 1900 a Greek sponge boat from the island of Symi anchored off the northern coast of the remote islet of Antikythera to escape a storm. After the storm abated a diver named Elias Stadiatos went down to look for sponges and found a wrecked ship on the sea bottom. He was stunned by what he found, and talked excitedly of having seen a heap of dead naked women, which when they were brought to the surface were found to be Greco-Roman bronze statues. The other contents of the ship included jewelry, bronzes, pottery, furniture, and amphorae filled with wine. The ship was dated to the first century B.C. and is thought to have been on its way from Rhodes to Italy. One of the bronze statues, known as the Ephebe of Antikythera, is now in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. It represents a nude youth thought to be Paris, the son of King Priam of Troy, possibly done by the renowned sculptor Euphranor, who worked in Athens in the mid-fourth century B.C.
Almost overlooked in the objects brought up from the wreck was a wooden box about the size of a book, which when opened proved to contain a complex arrangement of bronze gears and dials, all heavily eroded into shapeless lumps of green metal. The wooden box soon disintegrated into dust, but the bronze gears and dials survived and were eventually subjected to an X-ray analysis to determine their function. The device, now known as the Antikythera computer, proved to be an elaborate clockwork mechanism, which Derek De Solla Price, a historian of science at Yale, showed to be an astronomical device that reproduced the motions of the sun, moon, and visible planets. Such a device, now called an orrery, or planetarium, was known to the Greeks as a sphairopoiia, a mechanism that modeled the motions of the celestial bodies. A more recent analysis by Michael Wright, curator at the Science Museum in London, has shown that the gear system reproduced the epicycle theory for planetary motions derived by Apollonius of Perge and used by Ptolemy of Alexandria.
Several classical sources credit Archimedes with the invention of
two mechanical devices in bronze that reproduced the motions of the heavenly bodies. One of these sources, the mathematician Pappus of Alexandria, says that Archimedes wrote a treatise, now lost, called Peri Spairopoiias (On Sphere-Making), describing a celestial globe that he made to represent the motions of the sun and moon and demonstrate both solar and lunar eclipses. The other Archimedean invention was an orrery that reproduced the motions of the planets as well as those of the sun and moon.
Cicero reports that the Roman general Marcellus took both of these Archimedean devices back to Rome as booty after his sack of Syracuse in 212 B.C. He set up the celestial globe in the temple of Vesta for all to see. The poet Ovid, writing circa A.D. 8, describes the globe in his verses on the goddess and her sanctuary: “There stands a globe hung by Syracu-san art in closed air, a small image of the vast vault of heaven, and the Earth is equally distant from the top and bottom. That is brought about by its round shape.”
The orrery eventually came into the possession of a grandson of Marcellus, who showed it to the astronomer Gaius Sulpicius Gallus. Gallus used the orrery to predict a lunar eclipse on 21 June 168 B.C., and Cicero says that he demonstrated solar eclipses as well, though obviously he could not predict whether these would be visible in Rome.
