French to English: La gourmette en argent gravée General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Textiles / Clothing / Fashion
Translation - English The Engraved ID Bracelet in Sterling Silver
Inspired by the identity bracelets of soldiers in the First World War and the incontestable military ID tag, it boasts the know-how to ardently seduce men, having asserted its presence from the moment of its conception. It has been spotted flashing among the uniforms of droves of budding schoolboys, the chasubles of communicants, and the dungarees of bustling factory workers. Not out of place on a customized leopard print steering wheel, the "new wave" trend was nearly fatal for it. Condemned by the arbiters of good taste, the ID bracelet was forced to keep a low profile, concealing itself and then disappearing beneath the starched sleeves of blazers with epaulets. We thought it was definitively dead and buried, but that would be to underestimate this silver vixen. We saw it re-surge a decade later - this time pumped up, jacked and diamond-studded - on the wrist of any self-respecting rapper and hip-hopper: a symbol of non-negotiable virility.
French to English: Odilon Redon General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Translation - English Odilon Redon was a pioneer. His painting, which confronted the representation of the immaterial, ushered in modern art as early as 1874. Free spirit and iconoclast, he did not belong to any creed or any school. And yet, the Surrealists, the Fauves, the Symbolists, the Expressionists, and the Nabis all tried to claim him in their circles. Elusive, familiar with the bizarre, he knew — with a unique brushstroke — how to cut all ties, how to be a step ahead of every style without submitting himself to any of them. Painter of depths and of mystery, Odilon had only one master: the dream he was pursuing, between twilight and rainbow, all the way to the closed doors of the unconscious.
Portuguese to English: André Barros Music Bio General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Music
Translation - English André Barros was fresh out of law school when he decided to take a detour and dedicate himself to a new area of study. A self-taught piano player, he embarked on a journey to Iceland, where he worked for several months as a music production intern for the famous Sundlagin studio. While there, he came into contact with the likes of Olafur Arnalds, members of Múm, Amiina and Of Monsters & Men and even mixed and mastered his debut album Circustances.
For his style bridging the genres of contemporary, classical, and music for films, Blitz Magazine (PT) named André Barros as one of the main national acts to watch for in 2014. Last year he composed and interpreted music for over ten films and a dance choreography, collaborating with directors in the United States, Japan, India, Germany, Iceland, and Spain.
His new album Soundtracks Vol.I features themes he scored for the American short film Our Father, directed by Linda Palmer and starring Michael Gross, which won him the award for best original music score at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards. Our Father received positive reviews and prizes in various film festivals and was selected for screening at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival in the Emerging Filmmakers Showcase. Soundtracks Vol.I also contains a piece called Gambiarras, which includes the collaboration (text and voice) of acclaimed Portuguese novelist Valter Hugo Mãe, winner of the prestigious Saramago Prize.
Soundtracks Vol.I was released on May 25th, 2015 by Omnichord Records with distribution by Sony Music.
